Romelu Lukaku is struggling to recover from a toe problem in time for Everton’s trip to The Hawthorns. David Silva talks down fellow Spain international Diego Costa’s hamstring problem, Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez impresses for Algeria, while the injuries mount for West Brom as Youssouf Mulumbu picks up a hamstring injury.

Lukaku Concern for Toffees

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed his record signing faces a race against time to be fit in time for next weekend’s trip to West Brom. Lukaku has pulled out of international duties with Belgium due to an ongoing toe problem and, speaking to the club’s official website, Martinez admitted:

“We’ll have to assess him on Monday and Tuesday to see how fit he is because there is a big question mark over Rom being fully fit for the weekend. Obviously Rom has been struggling with that toe and he’s done magnificently to be on the pitch and helping us on a matchday. But this week, it’s been important for us to give him a specific treatment to work on that [toe] and make sure that his recovery time has been exactly what he’s needed. We’ve got a great relationship with the Belgian FA and it’s been great to be able to work together. We hope that Rom can benefit from that.”

The Scout Says: With just an assist to his name in the first three Gameweeks, Lukaku has clearly struggled to regain the form that served up 15 goals and nine assists during his loan stint at Goodison last time around. Given that his side face seven days in 22 days from next weekend onwards, Martinez will be reluctant to risk the big Belgian and with Samuel Eto’o on board, can afford to court caution with Lukaku’s fitness. A possible spell on the sidelines would certainly be good news for Steven Naismith’s growing band of Fantasy owners – many feel the Scot’s pitch time will be curtailed by Eto’o’s arrival but his chances of retaining the support role will surely take a turn for the better if Lukaku needs more time to recuperate.

Injuries Mount for Baggies

West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu lasted just 21 minutes of Congo’s defeat to Cameroon yesterday before limping off with a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: With Ben Foster and Graham Dorrans also pulling out of international duty through injury in the last few days, Alan Irvine doesn’t have his problems to seek right now. A potential absence for Mulumbu could allow James Morrison his first start of the season – the Scot recovered from injury to climb off the bench in the Gameweek 3 loss at Swansea – though Irvine could also turn to 4.0-priced defender Chris Baird as an alternative; the summer signing was fielded in the centre of the park during pre-season but has failed to feature for the midlands outfit in the league so far.

Silva Plays Down Costa Fears

The City playmaker raised the hopes of Diego Costa’s Fantasy owners yesterday. Speaking to the press ahead of Spain’s upcoming clash against Macedonia, Silva – who has a history of hamstring injuries himself – seemed confident that the Chelsea striker’s problem is merely a minor one.

“I saw Costa was doing well and I talked to him. The injury is nothing serious.”

The Scout Says: The news, whilst far from an official prognosis, raises optimism of a swift return to action for the Blues in-form frontman. Costa has already withdrawn from tomorrow’s squad with the problem but, as we saw last week at Everton, his powers of recovery seem to be rapid. Having started all but four of Atletico’s 38 league matches last term, there’s growing hope he’ll be raring to go in time for next Saturday’s home clash with Swansea – with 36% of the votes cast in this week’s Captain Poll, he’s been heavily backed to replicate the form which has seen him score in all three league appearances so far.

Mahrez Helps Algeria to Victory

The Leicester wide man played a key part in his nation’s 2-0 win over Ethiopia yesterday. Mahrez provided an assist for Porto’s Yacine Brahimi to help secure the points for Christian Gourcuff’s side.

The Scout Says: Mahrez’ burgeoning form could well be set to keep budget favourite Marc Albrighton on The Foxes bench when the domestic action resumes next weekend. The Algerian has started all three league matches on the right flank, with pre-season favourite Albrighton reduced to a couple of sub appearances so far. Available for 5.0, Mahrez has Stoke, Palace and Burnley in the next four as Nigel Pearson’s side look to build on the form that has earned points against Everton and Arsenal in the first trio of fixtures. If Jeffrey Schlupp can continue on the opposite flank, though, he looks an intriguing out of position option – priced at 4.5 and classified as a defender, he’s started the last two on the left and provided the assist for Leonardo Ulloa’s equaliser against the Gunners last time around.

Jovetic Injury Reports Remain Scarce

According to Twitter rumour and some limited sources, Man City’s Stevan Jovetic suffered a hamstring injury in training on Friday, ahead of Montenegro’s European Championship Qualifier with Moldova. It’s suggested that he will sit out Monday’s encounter as a precaution.

The Scout Says: While we would rarely give such a “story” any coverage, in a period awash with phantom injuries, it’s worthwhile sifting fact from rumour. Right now, there seems little need for Jovetic owners to panic, particularly when there are very few sources confirming the news, with much of the noise restricted to Twitter. As yet, there’s no suggestion of a withdrawal from the Montenegro squad or further confirmation that Jovetic will indeed sit out Monday’s game. The striker has, however, been cursed by hamstring problems in the past so, should he play no part against Moldova, Fantasy managers will wait keenly on reports from the Etihad ahead of City’s trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 4.

Are this seasons' Premier League teams at an all-time high in terms of quality? Although in recent years we have seen the departure of Bale, Suarez and Ronaldo, the arrival of talents such as Di Maria, Costa and Falcao in addition to the development of homegrown talent such as Ramsey and Sterling has, in my opinion, restored and even surpassed the quality that we previously had. Factor in the continual development of teams lower down the table such as Hull, Stoke and Swansea and it is arguably clear that Premier League squads are at the highest quality yet, there seemingly just isn't room for mediocre players any more.

    - You could obviously retort "yeah, cause teams have more cash now you dumbass", but the transfer funds have quite often been manufactured from the sale of players such as Bale/Suarez/Luiz etc. and only in the case of Utd this season (and City/Chelsea at some point) have we seen money spent straight from the owners pocket.

We will see when the champions league gets going. There was a time when it was common to have 2-3 English teams in the semis, so I'd say no.

I realise that only accounts for the top 4 though, and would agree that the average mid table team has improved

I would say that the league itself is slowly progressing in its overall quality, whereas across the continent the improvement is saturated between the top teams. Hence Madrid/Barca and Bayern are able to monopolise there respective leagues

Good point. That is probably thanks to TV money at least being distributed fairly in England. In Spain it is all pumped to the top 2.

Yes, we are dicking away more cash than ever. The big teams have more resources than any season I can ever remember and competition for the top 4 and the remaining Euro spots is at an all time high.

FPL-wise though, nailed-on-ness is slipping at the biggest teams and bottom half stars have dwindled thus far with only Siggy really looking the part (Lambert, Lallana Remy, Benteke, J-Rod). Too early to tell though

As a spectator - best season ever
As an FPL addict - most challenging season ever

Good job i believe that the greater challenge provides the greater reward so this should be an awesome season.

I agree, it is the biggest influx of talent we have seen for a long time, it should be right up there with the best seasons in my living memory. As a Utd fan it is even more exciting (provided we can win a sodding game). Although it makes FPL challenging it is a good challenge imo unlike last year where there were only 3 or 4 must have players and a sea of one-GW wonders around them.

the development of homegrown talent is too slow imho. Sturridge played pretty much as a sub at his parent clubs for a long time until Rodgers took the chance and gave him decent game ... Like you say about mediocre players, there is way too much emphasis on the instant results these days for managers to "take risks" with youngsters. Thats not good for the game and in particular home grown development

      1. FPL Touches

Yep, there aren't many youngsters that 'explode onto the scene' anymore, like Rooney and Walcott did. It doesn't help either though that fans at the top end are more demanding than ever and would immediately jump to slate a 17 year old on the internet after one bad game. Like you say instant results and quick satisfaction take priority to keep everyone happy.

I've seen fair few people around these parts preferring Bertrand over Clyne. Surely Clyne is the better pick with only 0.1m more?! What am I missing?

I've only watched the 1 Soton game this year but ones that have watched more claim that he's been a lot more involved with the attacks. Probably because Tadic has been on that wing.

Bertrand has better stats apparently, completely ignoring he fact that Clyne is a better player.

It's a tough one. With the fixtures, it's either him or Balotelli. Maybe depends on whether Sturridge is out for a while.

    Krul/ Elliot

    Ivanovic/ Wilson/ Wisdom/ Moore/ PVA

    Diego Costa/ Falcao/ Kun Aguero

Don't want Ade. Don't want to get rid of Falcao.

I was debating the same last night too. A lot of people seem to think Cesc is essential. I, however, would disagree.

I don't think Cesc is essential. He will be a steady flow of points, no doubt but I am gonna hope Costa can 'cover' for the lack of Cesc/ Hazard

I also don't think I'd ever Captain Cesc. I would Captain Hazard but I'm not getting them feels with Hazard yet, mate 🙂

im currently thinking along these lines too and with Chelseas fixtures stiffening I am thinking Stevie G is more likely to give consistent points.

Hey mate! I saw your response to this last night too.

I'll be honest. I did actually have a look at Gerrard. I think you should go ahead with it.

Fabregas has 40% ownership as compared to 5.5% of Stevie G.

The only thing I don't like is, I already have Sterling and I wouldn't feel comfortable doubling up with Stevie. That too with the Champions League games

there is that but I thought Pool looked very lively against both Spurs and City (1st half, I missed the 2nd half). Yeah. Im also considering the ownership too and hoping Fabs has a downturn too. It is risky but could be worth it. Liverpool have some tasty fixtures coming up and I want to be "all in"

I do too but reckon you could get Azpi for that and use the money further up. but listen you're putting up a staunch defence of your team. You obviously really like it. Bollocks to people's opinion and go with it.

On Ballo atm, great fixs with Studge potential inj. Falcao may have ltd game time, Ag fixs not great, he's v pricey and inj prone, and Welbeck's fixs not great and may get eased in.

He didn't want to play any part against Switzerland as he knows we are going to lose.

The guy has no fight in him. Prefers cushy life at Liverpool so made up an injury.

This is a guy who take a big wage cut to get first team football. A guy who played through injury 5 games last season because Liverpool didn't have Suarez available. He has fight, for sure. His commitment for England is questionable, but that goes the same for everyone else bar Henderson, Sterling, Cahill and Hart.

        1. Fantasy Gold
          • 11 Years
          11 years, 3 months ago

Just because he took a pay cut doesn't mean it's not a cushy life there at Liverpool. No pressure on him whatsoever.

His England antics are highly annoying. His ego is massive. To think that he's a big enough player to pick and choose the games he feels like playing for England really staggers me

            • 15 Years

He's not the only one. He owes the club who gave him a chance, he doesn't owe England anything. England only gave him a solid chance since his move to Liverpool, and they do the same to other players until they get a high profile move. The Germans however, do it the right way.

Adebayor as third striker or Ramsey as forth mid? I can only afford one and got no other cover for Spurs/Arsenal. Adebayor would probably be downgrade to Naismith where as Ramsey would be downgraded to Henderson or Tadic and where I downgrade my defense a bit. I got a really cheap fifth mid so playing 352 is not a option.
