Our weekly Sky game article is back again after Gameweek 5’s action. We delve into the usual info, including Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries and the current market trends, before taking a look at the Scout team and our plans for the week ahead.

Gameweek 5 Man of the Match Awards

These were the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures, achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional five points).

FixtureMoTM
Arsenal vs Man CityJack Wilshere
Chelsea vs SwanseaDiego Costa
Crystal Palace vs BurnleyScott Arfield
Southampton vs NewcastleGraziano Pelle
Stoke vs LeicesterEsteban Cambiasso
Sunderland vs TottenhamMousa Dembele
West Brom vs EvertonKevin Mirallas
Liverpool vs Aston VillaNathan Baker
Man United vs QPRAngel di Maria
Hull vs West HamEnner Valencia

One defender, six midfielders and three forwards picked up the awards last weekend. Diego Costa’s hat-trick helped him to grab his second MoTM award in four appearances, putting him as the top point-scorer overall with 53 points. Angel di Maria and Kevin Mirallas look bang in form at the moment and would be my tips for the coming weeks if you can find a way to draft them into your midfield. Esteban Cambiasso’s arrival at Leicester brings an interesting budget option into consideration – the 4.4m Argentine looks a very good enabler to free up cash and is likely to rack up passing and tackling bonus over the season.

Gameweek 5 Bonus Points

Four goalkeepers achieved bonus points from collecting five or more saves. Robert Green, Ben Hamer, Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski were the men in question, with Fabianski claiming the most saves over the Gameweek with seven, luckily bringing his points for the week back to zero after conceding four at Chelsea. Green joins Kasper Schmeichel at the top of the pile with an extra four points from bonus so far.

In defence, 12 players grabbed bonus, five for tackles and eight for passes completed. Javier Manquillo was the man to gather both and Liverpool’s new right-back looks to be bit of a bonus magnet after racking up eight additional points in just three matches – if he can see off the challenge of Glen Johnson, at just 5.5m he could be a real steal.

In midfield there were 26 beneficiaries in total – 15 for tackling and 15 for passes. All-action midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin, Aaron Ramsey, Ander Herrera and Moussa Dembele all picked up both. Schneiderlin leads the way overall with 12 additional points.

Fantasy Football Scout members can access all information regarding bonus points in the Player Stats section by clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

NameTeamValue% of Managers
SturridgeLiverpool9.86.76%
JoveticMan City7.95.64%
DebuchyArsenal6.15.08%
BalotelliLiverpool9.22.34%
RamseyArsenal8.61.98%

Daniel Sturridge, Stevan Jovetic and Mathieu Debuchy are all stuck on the physio’s table for this weekend, although Sturridge has taken to Twitter to reveal he is back in light training. Mario Balotelli’s lacklustre performance against Aston Villa was obviously enough to convince a few people to jump ship already and Aaron Ramsey somewhat surprisingly makes up the fifth spot – I can only assume he’s been shipped out for the identically priced Angel di Maria as listed below.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
CostaChelsea9.57.79%
FalcaoMan United9.45.27%
Di MariaMan United8.64.93%
WelbeckArsenal7.83.10%
HuttonAston Villa3.82.94%

Diego Costa is, unsurprisingly, the top transfer target this week after a stunning performance last weekend – the Spain international has a tough fixture against Man City at the Etihad this week but it appears that hasn’t deterred the punters too much. United duo Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria have also been drafted in by roughly 5% of managers ahead of a trip to Leicester and both are bound to rake in the points over the coming weeks. Danny Welbeck’s appeal is clear to see – he’s playing in a creative Arsenal team as the focal point and will set you back a meager 7.8m. On paper, it looks too good to be true and so far it seems to be proving just that but goals are surely just around the corner for the England forward. More Fantasy managers are cottoning on to budget option Alan Hutton, who, at 3.8m, is one of the cheapest players in the game – the Scot finds himself as the second highest scoring defender overall as Villa continue to defy the odds.

My Team

Fabianski
Moore, Hutton, Van Aanholt
Hazard, Toure, Ramsey, Sterling, Eriksen
Rooney, Jelavic©

ITB: 0.6m
Transfers remaining 34/40
Last week’s points: 55
Overall points: 273
Rank: 7,100

Notes

No Diego Costa or Cesc Fabregas contributed to a heavy slide in overall rank, dropping from 2k to 7k. Fellow Eden Hazard owners will likely be equally frustrated after he turned out an amazing performance yet left with just a two-pointer to his name. I backed Christian Eriksen to come good last week and thankfully he delivered a goal and passing bonus to justify my faith and can keep his place for now. A no-show for Yaya Toure and a one-point cameo from Raheem Sterling was a tad unlucky but hopefully they should both be back in their respective starting line-ups this week. Wayne Rooney grabbed 20 points as my skipper and then I switched the armband over to Nikica Jelavic who unfortunately drew a blank.

Captain Plan

My captain for Saturday is Nikica Jelavic as Hull head to Newcastle. Hopefully the Magpies defence will be as porous as it has been in recent matches and Jelavic can provide me with a differential – I doubt many Fantasy managers will have him in their team or even have a captain at all on Saturday due to the way the fixtures have fallen. For Sunday, I’ll switch the armband back to the reliable Rooney for United’s trip to Leicester and hope he plays a significant part in a big victory – choosing Rooney means I will also go into Gameweek 7 nicely set up for the Red Devils’ home clash with West Ham.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’re running our own Fantasy Football Scout League this season and we’re currently topping the Private League rankings as per usual. With a £1,000 prize to the winner, you’d be mad not to get involved. To join, visit Sky Sports Fantasy Football and key in League Name: FFScout, League Code: 8009000.

The Fantasy Football Club

This Friday you can catch Fenners and Merse at 18:30 on Sky Sports One HD on The Fantasy Football Club show, where they will be discussing the upcoming week’s Fantasy Football, quizzing former Bolton, Burnley and Wigan manager Owen Coyle and asking him for his #One2Eleven.

Mignolet, Manquillo, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Borini, Balotelli.

So our best CB gets dropped. Kind of wanted Lucas to play over Coutinho. Glad Borini starts.

lol Lucas is finished as a viable prospect in a Liverpool shirt. Grateful for his loyalty and service but there's no way he should start any more Prem league matches, imo

    hi all, defense headache:

    Ivanovic, Clyne, Moreno, and Chambers

    A) bench Clyne
    B) bench Chambers
    C) bench Ivanovic
    D) bench Moreno

currently on A or B in my head..Villa could score given Arsenal's form and Clyne is great in attack

    On a WC, thoughts?

    Forster / Heaton
    Pieters / Bertrand / Taylor / Moore / Duff
Di Maria / Ramsey / Sterling / Sigurdsson / Schneiderlin
    Aguero / Costa / Naismith

    £0.9 ITB

Is Williams worth the extra £0.6 over Taylor in the Swansea defence?

And who is the best United player to have at this stage? I'm torn between Rooney and Di Maria (the two most garunteed of starting).

      Cool team…

Can see you stressing over who to play between Schneiderlin and Naismith but maybe that's a good thing? I think Naylor gives you a chance at extra points for his attack (assists) if the Swans don't keep a clean sheet. I suspect Williams will get Bps if clean sheets are in the mix. I think Rooney is better as he has FKs and Pens too…

Thanks. Actually benched Sigurdsson at the moment, but who knows! I think I'm reasonably happy with Naylor. Thing with Rooney is that I'd have to do Naismith --> Rooney, which would then mean doing ADM --> Boyd (or whoever). I just think Naismith is great value at the moment, and I want both Costa and Aguero.

Nice, you may get exposed on defence week in week out. Naismith vs Schneiderlin rotation your only worry over coming games, but a good worry.

    REPOST

    Evening Gents,

Question…if having Ivan in your team is mainly for his threat in attack, considering Chelsea's lack of form in defense currently…(not to say this won't change)….Would you consider Baines to be a viable alternative to him considering the criteria - that I'm after the attacking potential that is attributed to the high cost?

This isn't so much a transfer question as just a general consensus question…what do you guys think, is Baines in Ivan's bracket now and for next little while?

Agreed...however from an FPL point of view CS's come in to play...Ivan is brill bit Baines may well outscore him despite not being quite as attack minded...not that he's a slouch in that dept, far from it.

Ivan is probably number 1 atm due to playing almost like a striker. Baines showed what he's all about yesterday though so i'm sure he'll close the gap soon.

If I choose Baines it means I can upgrade Naismith to Pelle…so it's basically:

        A - Baines and Pelle
        B - Ivan and Naismith

I think you have your answer then.

In a 343 Pelle is probably the best 3rd striker right now for fixtures. In a rotating 343-352 Naismith is mustard.

    6. Dr Dream
      • 13 Years

Yeah course he is...Chelsea have conceded three times the number of chances on Ivan's side as over on Azpi's side. Ivan is the problem when it comes to CS's...The Everton full backs went mad against Chelsea, attack wise, and they paid the price...since then they have been reigned in a bit.

For me Baines and Everton offers better CS and attacking returns than Ivan and Chelsea do at the moment...

i never understand how someone can have such a wide price range when picking players. Zero in on your range and then pick from there.

Here are my preferred picks, in no particular order:
~5.5: Moreno, Lovren, Dier, Clichy, Evans, Shawcross
~5.0 Manquillo, Caulker, Trippier Clyne, Bertrand
      ~4.5 Naylor, Wilson, Chambers

You can see that LVG is experimenting, against QPR they played much better when Mata was in the 10 spot and Rooney in the striker spot, Falcao and RVP didn't play that well together.

I would guess that one of Falcao or RVP will be benched and Mata will keep his spot, depending on form of course.

But Rooney should be a good pick at the moment. Have to reassess the situation after Leicester game.

Despite his impressive goal tally, Mata hasn't been doing the job he's in the position to do. Granted RvP has also been looking out of sorts. It's an interesting one.

True. Di Maria looks to be the crucial element in ManU attack build-up right now. It is interesting that Mata has been more a finisher than a playmaker.

When Falcao came on the game was more or less done so I wouldnt judge it by it....my personal view is that Rooney will play more in that position as the season goes on or play instead of Falcao or Rooney up front, I dont see Mata having a future at OT as Januzaj is also pushing for that position I guess he will be gone next summer or the summer after

Gamble on Foster -> Heaton for -4 or no (second keeper is Krul)? The cs for Burnley this gw looks likely and they have better fixtures after that and also look better in defence as WBA

    On a WC:

    Rafael a good pick?
Which two from Chambers, PVA and Naylor?

    Cheers!

Not entirely convinced by Rafael just yet. The other three are all sound choices. Probably Chmabers and Naylor short term.

I've got Naylor. Haven't chosen any of the others. (Current defence is Pieters, Bertrand, Naylor, Moore, Duff).

Is there something wrong with Dier? Why isnt he in any of the scout picks as they have opted for rose instead?

Is it just me or there really is no good captain option? Maybe this is a week worth a punt... Going Rooney just for the majority doesn't really give me much confidence... Siggy/Welbeck/Balo?

This is one of the gameweeks when getting the captain armband is crucial and could be a big differential.

Chelsea are conceding a lot of chances. Everton scored 3, Swansea could have had more than 2.. Aguero could punish them. I'd be on Aguero if I had him.

With a template midfield and attack locked in, I think defence is going to be the area which people can use to their advantage to surge up the leaderboards. I'm putting my eggs into one basket and keeping Baines until at least after Christmas.

Who are you planning on getting as a heavy hitter in defence?

Yeah. I'm thinking the same too.

Got 2 FT and debating whether to get Baines and Ashley Williams or get Baines and Chadli as my 5th mid.

Chadli would be your sixth mid if you have Baines 😀

Only problem with owning Leighton is that he scores in streaks and might frustrate you with a series of 1 pointers followed by a massive haul

I currently own Ramsey, Mata & Sterling.
Thinking to transfer in Siggy or Chadli for one of these guys but for who?
    What do you think?
Is this a good move anyway?
    Thanks in advance!
