It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

From Aguero, Costa and Welbeck, Welbeck seems to be the most certain to get most minutes this GW.

    A reason to captain Welbeck?

Possibly a good shout, he will be flying high after his performance v Villa. Also the north london derby is usually quite high scoring....prob worth a punt; everyone else captains Costa this week so could be a good variable

Maybe you can go for a cheaper keeper considering that United defense has been really leaky so far? If I had that roster, I may also consider replacing Silva with ADM.

That back line worries me mate to be honest. In the near future downgrade Colo & DDG, to invest in Baines & A 4.5 keeper w/ good returns

thanks guys, probably going to eriksen > tadic, in the future ddg > cheap good keeper, and colo > baines, silva > adm (if silva doesn't do great in the next fixtures), and maybe upgrading rooney to falcao/aguero (leading towards aguero if i replace silva, and falcao if i don't).

      Nice Going DZers.

Those of you who are very certain about ditching Rooney in GW7 or 8.

An injury to RvP will dramatically change the situation and open a new perspective. Mata to come in and push Roo forward, PK duties again and at the end of ADM & Falcao's passes.

Not like RvP is going to be fit all season. i say he's worth to hold until GW8 if you have other pressing issues in your team to attend to.

Another point for me is that his fixtures take a turn for the worse post gameweek 8, one of the reasons I am not considering Falcao

I know it's gonna be worse, but MUN would still score and come on, a penalty or two should come alng the way, especially if Young gets back into the fold 😛

But only if RvP is injured...

That's a big if really, RvP will be on pens and will play 90 mins week in week out when LVG is in charge. But yes, I would seriously consider him despite the fixtures if RVP gets injured

    Bego (Myhill)
    Ivan, Clyne, Taylor. (wisdom, Baird)

    Roo, Costa, Pelle

Morning DZ. As i have loads of work to do this seems a good use of my time.

    Overall rank vs mini league.

Does the importance you place on these have any bearing on your transfers?

I understand the thought that if you have an good overall rank you will be doing well in your mini league but to me it isnt quite that simple. I should state that my sole aim for the season is to win my cash mini league and laud it over the friends i drink and watch most matches with.

My example is this- This week i had a choice of Welbeck vs Pelle to come in. I am currently 2nd in the mini league. Many other teams have Welbeck and none (yet) have Pelle. I feel the sensible 'mini league' move would have been to get Welbeck in to cover their points. I didn't and got Pelle as a chance to increase the lead/ take over.

Inversely, if i was down in mid table and had 'mini-league' thinking i would be looking for a couple of players who the teams above me didnt have while still covering the Costa, Di Maria etc.

No real point to this post! Just delaying reports and wondered if only i think like this?

      • 12 Years

I feel you pain.. It's tough deciding which options to take. I end up settling and trying to please both! And hasn't necessarily done me any favours!

Agree. A happy medium. I have a team which has many of the 'owned' players in the league. Like to add some fun and randomness. Hence Pelle. If he comes in and Welbeck blanks- heroic. Inverse- ashamed

      • 11 Years

I'm exactly the same. Mini league dominates my thinking. At 3rd position and a 30 point gap to 1st position I'm looking to cover sure-things and include differentials. Also, being pretty new to non-casual playing renders me not experienced enough to compete for high overalls.

      Not an Aguero fan.
With all his skill and influence he still doesn't usually pay back his value in FPL. Misses too many games

A lot of talk about Sturridge here with his fixtures.
It would allow an upgrade for Chadli too.

Until he is injured he is still KUN AGUERO mate!!!

    Getting Balotelli out;

Or are both necessary this GW? (I have 2 fts)

Yea my thoughts exactly, Balo is just terrible atm. The only dilemma is that I want Aguero, however, having Aguero and ADM in the same team is impossible for me cash wise...

        Maybe Balo > Pelle?

So, what's the final verdict on Rooney...playing deeper, many players sharing the goals and assists at united etc....but fixture is a good one this week.

Would you switch him to Pelle (vs.QPR) for FT or wait and see...? Yes or no?

I don't get it why to wait, if he's playing deeper in all games as it seems, it must affect his points, right..? DiMaria on set pieces and corners as well, sharing them...

Tempted by Aguero, but too much uncertainty about minutes currently...

Rooney, Ramsey in similar boats ATM.
Played deeper in their last game and not as effective as last season.
They have 2 weeks to improve their scores or they are both out id say.

      1. President John F. Keninnsie
        • 12 Years

He's my punt, 0.8% ownership, good fixtures and attacking stats 🙂

It's hard to split those 4 tbh, I've had Fab all season so may be biased but I've enjoyed his consistent assists. Hazard is an explosion waiting to happen and is still a very good pick. From the two, I'd probably pick Fab... For now.

The Dortmund game was the first Arsenal game I watched in a while and Ramsey was really poor. He'll still score well in the long run but his current form isn't quite at the level it was last season or early this season. Sterling is a good pick and will be better once Sturridge returns, so I'd go with him. Rodgers resting him is a bit of a worry though...

You should've watched Arsenal first 2 PL games. He was almost irresistible. And last week against Villa, he almost scored on numerous occasions. Might give you a different perspective.

But hey, you ditched him for ADM, it worked well and so great play nonetheless. 😀

Baines is almost like a shoe-in with his form (not EVE's) and fixtures, but I just realized that LIV's fix are also as good after this GW. Maybe Moreno should be considred by us too as an alternative, easier to keep it big upfront.

Playing in midfield? After I responded to you above I realised what a great bet Lukaku will be and might get him for Rooney next week. Can you convince me otherwise?

I feel playing in the hole isn't the same as "playing in midfield". Rooney was always the player who dropped deep even when playing as a striker. I feel playing in the hole suits his playing style more, and his points won't get affected even if he plays in the hole instead of being the striker. On the contrary, I think his fpl points might increase.

I remember last year where Rooney used to play midfield and still racked up points.Looks out of form now but i think it's worth holding on for this weekend. If he doesn't score well this weekend then it's probably worth selling.
