It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in β€œthe hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Also, to those who are low in rank, we are only 10% of the way there in terms of FPL points for the season. A LONG way to go.

    Here's a simple question...

What football sites (bar this) do people use to get information from, whether it's articles or general news....

My two favourites (& only two I basically use) are Football365 & whoscored

Just interested to see what you guys use & would check them out

If you're never going to play Downing you may as well get a cheapie (Boyd/Quinn). Would probably go for the Saints double up and get Forster over DDG.

Don't listen....Downing is only 1 FPL pt behind this weeks darling pick of Pelle. If Downing is a bad pick then is Pelle ?..Or put another way only three forwards have more pts than Downing so far for the season.....For 5.5 you'd be daft to ship him out.

Didn't say he was a bad pick, just said that he will have a benching problem every week and thus waste money on the bench.

            1. Dr Dream
              • 13 Years
              11 years, 10 months ago

I can't see the benching problem tbh Beavis...Wham play QPR next week so Downing is a great pick..plus a couple of other upcoming games. Plus the fact if one of his players gets a minor knock the Downing is a more than ample stand in on any given gameweek...It's a lot of player for 5.5 at the moment.

I suppose you can bench Welbz but honestly that's 1 week you get out of Downing and then probably your other players will have better fixtures after that. Not sure that warrants the extra 1m but I can see the appeal of having the flexibility.

as of now my plan is Ivan > Baines during the international break anyhow, so would need something massive to change that (like 2 double digit scores in a row beforehand or something)

Ozil is a solid differential these days, when he's on form he's racking up lots of points. He's very open to rotation though, although I think Ozil is one of those players who is rarely coming on as a sub - he's either starting or rested completely - he's too much of a cottonwool superstar to be bothered about a 15 minute cameo and Wenger knows it too.

He's only started when either Jovetic or Aguero have been rested/injured, and one of those times he's been benched in favour of an extra midfielder. He'll probably start the next couple until Jovetic is back, but you'll need to be prepared to look for other options if Jovetic comes back and takes his place.

Yeah, I'm bringing him this week, but I'm not convinced he's going to be a must own all season long the way Suarez was last year and Van Persie was a couple years ago. Theoretically no penalties, + injury prone/lot of fixtures like you say. Also not sure if he's going to have the elite assist threat of Suarez/RVP

Anyone else think that Welbeck, Sanchez and Walcott is enough to give Arsenal a shot at the Champions League this year? ...if they buy a proper DM in January and give Ospina (the best goalkeeper at Arsenal by a mile...) a chance. They are perfectly suited to European counterattack football IMO

Think they'll be outclassed in the round of 16 or quarters

Welbeck has every chance of doing well at Arsenal, but is still really an unknown quantity. Sanchez is great, but again new to the team, and Walcott-is-injured has all the strength of a wet paper bag.
Who knows though, after Chelsea winning it a couple of years back, it showed that if you make it out the group, anyone can win.

Their defence is severely stretched and won't be able to handle playing the same back four each game.

      That's a no for me...

It's so funny watching all these "anti-west ham for FPL" comments. The man is having a blinder of a season so far.. Has been performing consistently for 5 weeks in a team that is actively trying to be more attacking, and succeeding. This is a new West Ham and they're looking good. I have bought him in on my brothers team and I hope he kicks one and assists another so I can get him instantly before he tops the midfield points table and the price rises next week. Follow his current form., not his past. I wish him all the best this year, its going to continue to get better for him.

agreed...Downing is playing very, very well...

I really want to bring in Enner...thoughts on him? πŸ™‚

Enner is looking the good aye! Works very hard, obviously wants to impress which he has in my eyes already. Excellent aerial threat and can ping one from no where as we've all seen. I'm keeping an eye on him, but at 6.9m he'd probably need to kick a couple more to get me totally on board. I can see him being up there with the likes of Pelle (maybe a BIT bias of me) if Downing, Zarate, Noble, Cresswell (looks tops too) and hopefully Matty Jarvis keep feeding him. My punt up forward would be Sakho at this stage - 5.5m and is getting full games now. He's class, and hope that he as well continues the way of Downing.
p.s. I'll be keeping an eye out for Jenko for ya mate πŸ˜‰

Don't forget Amalfitano. For me, the jury's still out a little on this guy but with Jarvis' inconsistency he may be a useful addition. I just hope Allardyce doesn't resort to the one trick pony combo of Nolan and Carroll once they are both back fit. However, they will provide an alternative option I suppose. Things are looking bright though as of now.

Yeah mate, of course. Only played a bit on the weekend and managed a goal. We haven't even mentioned Song in all this who looks like he can literally freeze time.. I can see Carroll slotting in somewhere if we play 2 up front, but i hate to say this; I feel Nolan's time is up, there's no room for him anymore! We've got to be more progressive.
