Ahead of the weekend’s action, we take our regular look at the forthcoming fixtures and highlight those teams with the best schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks. In-form Southampton look poised to continue their impressive start, last term’s Championship winners have reason to be cheerful, whilst fortunes on Merseyside could take a turn for the better as the fixture list smiles a little more kindly.

Liverpool

“frisking

Denied the full three points in the Anfield leg of the Merseyside derby, the Reds yet again failed to convince last weekend. If they’re to maintain a credible title challenge, Brendan Rodgers needs to rapidly address shortcomings at both ends of the pitch, but he does at least have fixtures on his side for the time being. Over the next four weeks, West Brom and Hull visit Anfield whilst trips to two of the bottom three, Newcastle and QPR, also look ripe for returns.

Faith in the Liverpool defence has scarcely been lower and few would bank on Simon Mignolet whatever the fixtures. With a complete absence of resilience, most of the backline are considered dead wood for Fantasy purposes, but for those who fancy Liverpool to tighten up, Alberto Moreno has still been impressive in attack, if not in defence, and may yet reward patience. In midfield, Raheem Sterling continues to defy his team’s form and deliver results, while Steven Gerrard’s clinical set-piece delivery ensures that he stays relevant. Daniel Sturridge is hoping for a return to the fray soon, which could boost his team and may help Mario Balotelli notch his first Premier League goal for the Reds.

Leicester

“frisking

While a 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace was a sharp comedown from their previous week’s triumph over United, the defeat surely won’t dampen the Foxes’ spirits too much. Nigel Pearson’s side have some excellent fixtures on the horizon to help lift them into a well earned position in the top half of the table, beginning with a home clash against fellow promoted side Burnley this weekend. After that, the following five Gameweeks include trips to Newcastle, Swansea and Southampton as well as home fixtures with West Brom and Sunderland. Such a schedule could boost the appeal of a defence with just one shut-out to their name and also aid Leicester’s burgeoning attack.

As the ticker turns blue, Kasper Schmeichel gets a fair chance to entice Fantasy managers, while 4.0 priced Liam Moore could become a bargain. In midfield, we’re still waiting to see which – if any – budget assets emerge but Esteban Cambiasso has a proven record as a box-to-box type and has already opened his account. Cambiasso’s compatriot Leonardo Ulloa has been subject to significant interest after his high-profile heroics against United and now has the platform to add to his five goal-tally, while Jamie Vardy will be similarly hopeful of kicking on after an incredible 21-point haul in his previous home appearance.

Stoke

“frisking

Finally giving their fans a victory at the Britannia, the Potters are starting to deliver on their promise. Over the next six Gameweeks, Mark Hughes has a good-looking set of fixtures to use to his advantage and build momentum, with home matches against Swansea, West Ham and Burnley plus visits to Sunderland, Southampton and an off-key Spurs. Such fixtures could be profitable for Fantasy managers all over the pitch.

In defence, a second clean sheet brings Asmir Begovic into contention while Marc Wilson has now played every minute of the season to quash any doubts over his security. Alternatively, Marc Muniesa was given the nod over Erik Pieters last night after scoring a brace in the Capital One Cup and has huge potential if he can hold onto that place. In midfield, Victor Moses looks to be finding himself at home after his unhappy toils at Chelsea and Liverpool last season. The Nigerian seems to have struck up a partnership with evergreen Peter Crouch – both were in the points for the second match running last night and either could prove good value over these fixtures.

Southampton

“frisking

A win over QPR that, in truth, could easily have been far more comprehensive sees the Saints make a play – for the second season running – as the best value outfit across the Fantasy games. Ronald Koeman’s side have earned themselves second place in the league and have the fixtures to help strengthen their position. A visit to their old manager at Spurs will hold little fear on current form and the following five Gameweeks include three promising home matches against Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester plus visits to Hull and Aston Villa.

In a similar situation to this time last term, few Fantasy teams are now are without at least one Southampton defender and a case can easily be made for doubling up. While Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand duel for ascendency in our choice of full-back, their attacking points make goalkeeper Fraser Forster a little unappealing at the same price-point. In midfield, it seems only a matter of time before Dusan Tadic delivers on his potential, while Sadio Mane has caught the eye and comes with plenty of pedigree from the continent. Up front, Graziano Pelle now has four goals, an assist and seven bonus points and has completely overshadowed Shane Long, who may well be set for bench-warming duties as a result of Mane’s arrival.

Also Consider

Arsenal
As the injuries pile up, the fixtures mercifully begin to soften for Arsene Wenger. After this weekend’s daunting trip to Stamford Bridge, the Gunners face just two of last season’s top eight in the subsequent nine Gameweeks – while Fantasy prospects look tantalizingly good, choosing the right assets to take advantage looks a frustratingly fraught task.

Calum Chambers would be the stand-out option in defence, but for his propensity for picking up cards that sees him perched precariously on the suspension tightrope. In midfield, confirmation of Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury has sparked an exodus but a like-for-like replacement for Arsenal’s fixtures isn’t forthcoming with Theo Walcott not quite ready to return and Alexis Sanchez’s pitch time puzzlingly unassured. Danny Welbeck, on the other hand, does appear to be firmly in Wenger’s plans and he ought to prosper from these fixtures – at a price of 7.2 in FPL, the deadline-day signing looks exceptional value ahead of this run of matches.

Everton
A last-gasp goal from Phil Jagielka saved Roberto Martinez from further blushes as he toils to replicate his stellar first season in charge. Of course, the opening fixtures haven’t helped the Toffees, and once this week’s trip to Old Trafford is dispensed with, they have a long tract of easier ground to tread, with Aston Villa, Swansea and West Ham all rolling up to Goodison Park.

The Everton backline has been uncharacteristically porous this season but that hasn’t stopped Leighton Baines’ ascent up the Fantasy standings and the forthcoming schedule should strengthen his chances of points at both ends of the pitch. Injury to Kevin Mirallas could benefit Aiden McGeady, and while Steven Naismith seems to be taking a little breather, Romelu Lukaku could be set to ramp up his form – providing his manager stops fielding him on the wing, after the big Belgian was fielded on the right of a 4-3-3 against Liverpool.

Crystal Palace
Neil Warnock’s second reign at Crystal Palace has been anything but the disaster many had initially feared and the weekend win over Leicester showed a good balance between defence and attack. With three decent fixtures to come over the next four weeks, the Eagles have a chance to get more points on the board before battening down the hatches. Scott Dann has prospered the most in defence so far while Julian Speroni has also ticked over nicely between the posts. In midfield, Wilfried Zaha has lost his manager’s faith, handing Jason Puncheon the platform to pick up the points in four of his five appearances. We’ve yet to see the impact of the imminent return of Marouane Chamakh on Warnock’s frontline, but having sung Fraizer Campbell’s praises, it looks likely that Dwight Gayle will be the one to make way after Campbell took his tally to two goals in as many matches last weekend.

Has BEGOVIC replaced FORSTER as the 5.0 goalkeeper of choice?

    Some facts about Stoke:
    - 2nd fewest big chances conceded in the league (2nd to West Ham)
    - 2nd in the league in goals conceded (only 1 more goal than Southampton)
    - 2nd in the league in errors (1 more than Southampton)
    - Last season they were 4th in the league at home defensively (both in goals conceded and CS's)
    - Begovic has only had to make 8 saves so far, fewer than any starting goalkeeper

Southampton obviously have a great record themselves, but consider this:
    - Forster costs 0.1 more than Begovic now.
    - Forster is unlikely to get save points, and you can get his CS points for around the same price with Bertrand or Clyne, who also offer attacking returns.
    - Having Forster limits you to only 2 of Pelle, Tadic, Clyne, Bertrand, Mane, Fonte, and Alderweireld, all of whom are great picks. Having Begovic instead enables you to have 3 of these (and there are no selection dilemma's unless you really want Moses, Crouch, and Wilson!).
    - Shawcross is 5.6 but doesn't score much so the benefit of him over Begovic is minimal, and no other Stoke defender is 100% nailed on, with Huth looming and Muniessa impressing recently.
    - Begovic and Forster have almost identical fixture difficulties week-by-week for most of the season, so having one or the other doesn't ruin your GK rotation if you have a particular 4.0 or 4.5 that you like.

Do you agree or disagree? Who do you think is the better choice?

Bego the best for one obvious reason

Southamptons defenders are much better value than their keeper
Stokes defenders are not better value than their keeper

Stoke often win 1-0, they dont score much, so their defenders could get bonus
example: last week, 3 defenders got bonus
Soton will score more goals (2-0, 2-1, 3-0) do their def hardly get bonus if they dont score/assist

            Stoke defenders BPS: 15
            Southampton defender BPS: 14

            Not much in it.

Also, Begovic has 1bps, Forster has 0. I predict Begovic will get more BPS than Forster this season due to Stoke scoring less which increases his probability of being amongst the higher bps earners, just like yesterday.

Wilson doesn't score like Clyne and Bertrand do though. For that extra outlay you could have the CS and assists/goals and the added bps for them.

Wilson 4.5? Also you mention all these stats for Bego but the person hes behind on most of them is Forster. And last but not least, Stokes fixtures get very bad soon. Southamptons take a dip too but not as bad as stokes

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

        1. The fact that Begovic is only behind Forster makes them very interchangeable. Their stats are almost identical, give or take 1 goal.

        2. Look at the season ticker. You couldn't be more wrong about the fixtures as they are basically identical.

        3. Wilson isn't nailed on, because Huth is looming very large.

Also, nowhere did I say Begovic is a better keeper than Forster (because I don't think he is, but that's arguable).

What I am saying is that Begovic is a better choice in FPL, for all the reasons mentioned by myself and summed up nicely by Triggerlips.

I never said you thought he was a better keeper.and all of your poibts point towards Forster being the better FPL prospect bar the 0.1 difference. The only real factor is if you dont want to double up with clyne

Bego is better imo. Although Stoke as a team is not as defensive as Pulis' days, but their defensive unit is still solid - games against City and NEW recently are just enough evidences. Plus Bego has a history of stopping PKs, so that's an added bonus.

FPL-wise, Soton defenders offers more value - very attacking/goal threat, CS + Bonus potential. So better to go with Bego + Clyne/Berty imo.

What's the read on Gerrard going forward? Is there an argument that he'll out produce someone like Di Maria over the medium term?

Seems like his buzz doesn't match the projections-- let me know if I'm off base.

    Chester/Clyne/Cahill
    Sterling/Downing/Siggy/ADM
    Costa/Pelle/Aguero

    Gilks/Marney/Duff/Dummet

On -4. Is it worth WC now to cancel the hit and fix up the defence and midfield? Or should I WC during International break. I'm also considering saving the WC

No need to WC. Prob is Chester might still not play (I have him too), so Duff will come out from bench. Not a great team for GW7, but attack is good so I'd keep the WC.

Chambers, wasnt expecting that, that one is really, really odd

It seems strange that it is fantasy scout favourites like Chambers and Baines that are rising , even though they shouldnt be.

I think there's something in that.

Also, players who have scored and thus "on form" don't seem to fall as readily as others, even if they experience mass sales. Eg. Caulker

If you do A, you probably need a clean sheet to be break even if you take a hit, unless City rolls over Villa, which is always a possibility. You never know which City (or Villa, for that matter) will show up.

I'd roll dice and pick up Naylor given upcoming fixtures, but i'm not one to shy away from taking a hit this early in the year.

      1. NABIL - FPL otai
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Yep Naylor is good pick given fixtures, and I have no qualm about taking that sort of hit, especially to replace a non-starter like Chester. But if Hutton miraculously gets anything more than 2 points against City, I'd screw myself.

He played more attacking in the 2nd half against QPR, and the same happened vs Swansea. He's becoming less of a holding mid and more of a box-to-box, which makes him a better pick that before even if he didn't score.

        Any thoughts on my wildcard?

        Mannone

        Moreno/Jones/Taylor (SWA)

        Di Maria/Sterling/Silva/Siggy/Jedinak

        Falcao/Costa

        Bench: Krul/Naismith/Wilson/Chambers

Jones likely to return now. Liverpool have a great run of games coming up, Jedinak/Nasmith/Siggy can be rotated. Wilson & Taylor rotate home and away also.

Other wildcard set up was: Pelle >>> Naismith......Mata >>>> Di Maria....Jones>>>> Hutton

        What is better guys?

Prefer Hutton to Jones as well as someone other than Krul. Would say Guzan, but then you'd be doubling up on Aston Villa defense, which some would consider risky.

Also like Downing (WHU) over Jedinak, but Downing more $$$

Yeah I can't have those options without dropping Di Maria for Mata, and I'm thinking it might not be worthit as I could lose ground with Maria., Mata will be dropped as soon as Rooney is back!

            Considering Guzan now though

Why would you pick Jones on a WC? madness. not only is he injured but United are a sieve at the back!

get naismith out fast before he drops more in price, as well as krul

I'd also have downing ahead of jedinak

Jones is probably going to return this weekend so that's exactly why I'd pick him, plus UTD might be bad at the back but they have a good run of games

You should definitely play Shawcross over Clyne imo.

Spurs don't concede a lot outside of games against the top 4 so attacking points are unlikely imo, and Shawcross has much better chance of a CS playing against strikerless Sunderland

those fixtures look decent on paper, but there's plenty of away games like whm, cpl, and especially wba which you expect goals in from the home team. Their home games aren't taht great either.

Solid pick though, i just think there's better options like Wisdom, and also the 4.5's like pva, taylor, wilson, and chambers to invest in, seeing as his value is 4.1, not 4.0.

good point, very true. You shouldn't be looking to trade a 4.0 defender anyways (unless on a WC) as there should be bigger issues to deal with. Anyone out of Duff, Wisdom, Moore, and Hutton is a solid option. I love Wisdom though because his best fixtures coincide with the weeks my other def's have tough games.

    RMT

    Krul/Guzan
    Moore/Wisdom/Duff/Shawcross/Clyne
    Siggy/Ramsey/Sterling/Di Maria/Hazard
    Pelle/Lukaku/Naismith

ITB: 2.8 and I already used my FT to rid myself of Rooney
I still have my WC and i hope to hold onto that for a while yet
    Cheers!

Looks fine, apart from Krul at swansea and guzan vs city this weekend...

There is a very clear lack of Costa or Aguero in attack though. Yours might be the first team ive seen without a striker costing over 10,0!

Haha, getting Downing is a great move imo (I did Ramsey>Downing earlier this week), but taking a hit for Downing sounds pretty hilarious 😛

Remind yourself the hit is for Aguero and not Downing 😆

Should I do it now before I change my mind and eriksen drops!?

for what it's worth to people seeing Chambers rising and getting worried because you want him, he's currently on 4 YC so I wouldn't get him just yet.

could easily pickup his 5th this weekend vs Hazard and then you can grab him for GW9

Agree it's only 0.1 anyway. Def usually take a lot longer to rise anyway. Jeez he racked them up quick.

I'm not worried at all about those yellows tbh. Ideally he picks it up against Hull though so he doesn't miss a fixture I want to play him in.

If he gets a YC against Chelsea though it means I play Taylor at Stoke instead of Chambers vs Hull, which isn't that big of a difference really. I think Hull's attack is better than Stokes anyways.

Not too worried just think it's annoying he rose the day before I as going to bring him in. Regarding the 4 yellows. no hassle. He can sit on the bench for a week. An expensive striker on 4YC I would be more owrried about. Costa and Pelle drawing closer to that

    1. Cesc + Pelle + Welbeck
    2. Tadic/Schneiderlin + Aguero + Welbeck
    3. Chadi + Pelle + Aguero

    which 1 is better?
