Don’t get us wrong – we’re not labelling this latest droning session as “essential” listening. However, there’s no getting away from the fact that the concept of essential players has dominated the airwaves at Scout towers over the past week.

In this latest episode, Granville and I take on this meaty subject, whilst chewing over the importance of ownership and spit out the semblance of an opinion on both. Around that main course, we take on the usual bevvy of regulars with the usual haphazard panache.

Essential? Not quite, not even on a rainy Thursday night.

Grab this crucial slice of audio via this link or explore this necessary noise via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seems a bit silly this week given how good Swans have been defensively and how crap Stoke are going forward. Naylor also offer more attacking threat.

        1. La Roja
          12 years, 17 days ago

          Ok fine.

But why would have 3 saints defender in your team if you aren't going to play them at home vs Sun?

        2. Nabs Kebabs

lol @ swans being good defensively.

This ain't about glory mate, u have invested min 5m each for 3 saints defenders and can't play them all vs Sun at home.

                  Pointless to have 3 then

There you go again. If it makes you feel any better, I don't plan on having three for much longer.

Re 3 SOT defenders, fair enough for being that different but if you wont play them all vs SUN at home when will you?

      1. Not Irish

        Exactly my point above

        1. Not Irish
          12 years, 17 days ago

Sunderland look to be in far better form than QPR were.

I'm a go big or go home guy as well. But I've also benched three Naylor clean sheets this season. And Stoke are piss poor going forward.

          1. La Roja
            12 years, 17 days ago

You just posted something about stats

            1. Not Irish
              12 years, 17 days ago

Yet Sunderland have outscored them and of the two look to be the team finding some form. Logic also helps you know.

              1. La Roja
                12 years, 17 days ago

If your logic is having 3 saints defenders and not playing them all at home to sun, then this conversation is well, truly over.

I think you need to listen to what other guys says muppet...

Hey guys need some expert insight here:

    A) Moreno + Pieters -> Baines/Ivan + PvA

    or

    B) Moreno + Pieters -> PvA + Moore -- AND Aguero in next week for free?

    Thoughts?

    1. BeachBadger

I wouldnt get PVA now. fixtures get pretty bad

      1. FPLEL
        12 years, 17 days ago

Yea just looked at that, will change him to another decent budget option, what do you think of the choices? Is bringing in Aguero that big of a deal?

        1. BeachBadger
          12 years, 17 days ago

At the minute no. He hasn't given the returns to justify his huge price yet. But it is Aguero. He could explode any minute. Couldve had a hat trick last week and everyone and his dog would be buying him. Who are your other defenders? I think Chambers ffers great value going forward. Hutton or Vlaar maybe.

          1. FPLEL
            12 years, 17 days ago

At the moment I have Hutton, Ntaylor, Moreno, Pieters and Clyne. I know pieters is a must sell, and Moreno is also a maybe to go. Thanks for the chambers thought, will look into that.

Likelyhood of these starting at the weekend...

    A) Mane
    B) Moses
    C) Adebayor
    D) Mangala

    1. BeachBadger

Odd conundrums aren't they. Each with doubts for different reasons lol I can see Mane being rested.Shane Long didnt play for Ireland. Moses I think will play. Looks like he wants him fit for the match. Ade should play too I reckon unless they're fed up of him not scoring and want an excuse to bring in Soldado or Kane 😆 . Not sure on Mangala. Did dhe play? Was only a friendly anyways.

DON'T do Coleman to Baines. Way too sideways. I know Baines has peno's and free kicks but not worht it IMO

I would probably keep the faith with Tadic also. He's soooooooo close to exploding it seems

And I would pick Welbeck. Cheaper, Arsenal's lone striker, Welbeck all day

This is true. I honestly don't know, something to monitor. If he's injured you could still probably hold as it'll mot likely be a one week thing, but if he's not playing, getting Baines is fair enough

Being a centre back he's unlikely to come off the bench even if he doesn't start. Not sure I quite agree that Stoke away is a better fixture than Sunderland at home

If you had one choice Ivan or Baines? and why?

    1. Joggers Nipple

Ivan. If you pay 7m plus for a defender you want chances of a clean sheet. Also attacks. Pens dont happen every week. Howard going a little postal this season. Distin and Hibbert starting for Ev? Others think diff i know, just my opinion. PS, dont own either

It's a tough one. I own both and I think Baines has exceptional attacking potential with both goals and assists. Everton's fixtures are also looking better than Chelsea's coming up. If Everton can get their defence back to where it was last season - Baines could be explosive!!

With clearance to post away and about to pull the trigger on Chadli and Ulloa to Milner and Pelle in mind...

    Serious lads...

How about Fat Frank for a week?

Milner or Lamps? Yes. No. Why?

Hadn't even thought of Lamps tbf. Nasri. Navas. Tired and traveled Yaya off form in general.

Lampard or Milner to go with FINALLY getting Pelle in.

    Go.

          Bego
          Baines. Clyne. Ivanovic.
          Siggy. Sterling. DiMaria. Chadli
          Ulloa. Costa. Kun(c)

          McCarthy. Duff. King. Wisdom.

Just Chadli in and out for a week but getting rid of Ulloa then dropping DiMaria for Theo and Chadli right back mate.

          1. Joggers Nipple
            12 years, 17 days ago

Ok. for me i would just hold Chadli as i see transfers as that valuable. To get rid fair enough but to then bring back? Not for me. At worst with Duff first sub you get a Burnley defender coming on at home to WH. Just my opinion

            Agree on shifting Ulloa

      Your front 8 is superb.

If u are already benching PVA yet would obviously start him over Wilson and Janmaat (neither good picks), why not sell one of them????

With Baines in or maybe selling both for a couple mid range def u are on cloud 9

Janmaat home to Lei who are terrible away, happy with him for this week but will shift him soon.

Wilson is a very decent pick imo for 4.5m
        .
The main dilemma is committing to an expensive defender or playing defensively and covering myself with 2fts and plenty in the bank incase one of my front 8 gets injured

        1. Stupendous
          12 years, 17 days ago

See above. Plan is to drop Adm for Theo next week and have some change left. If Adm does blank or underperform this week and people mass sell like loads are mulling over then I'd perhaps only lose .1-2 from Adm and be happy with a 9.0 Theo.

          Just a thought

      FFS superstition.

Though I do agree that having an early captain fail seems to hurt more than a later captain fail, so if part of your strategy is minimizing regret (which I've come to value a bit more than I should, probably), then yes, it's a viable piece of the equation.

I had typed out a long reply to your post above about Ivan vs. Baines, but deleted it because it had too many caveats.

However, the main caveat was that if you can work in a different chelski defender (because you definitely should have at least one), then do that and get Baines over Ivan. Spread the risk, IMO. Ivan won't get more attacking points than Baines in the longer run.

Erikson for Chadli / Downing and use funds to upgrade Naismith

That's a great way to lay things out, really helpful.

Perhaps include some way to account for minutes played. Mane vs. Tadic is the most affected example, but it'd be helpful in all 3 instances.

Are Puncheon & Chadli your 4th & 5th mids, or 3rd & 4th? If it's 3rd & 4th, then I'd say go for it. If you have 5 mids all over 5.5m or so, then I'd say don't bring in another mid-priced mid... Downgrade Puncheon instead.
