Don’t get us wrong – we’re not labelling this latest droning session as “essential” listening. However, there’s no getting away from the fact that the concept of essential players has dominated the airwaves at Scout towers over the past week.

In this latest episode, Granville and I take on this meaty subject, whilst chewing over the importance of ownership and spit out the semblance of an opinion on both. Around that main course, we take on the usual bevvy of regulars with the usual haphazard panache.

Essential? Not quite, not even on a rainy Thursday night.

Grab this crucial slice of audio via this link or explore this necessary noise via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    DeGea - Myhill

    Hutton - Wisdom - Baines - Wilson - Duff

Di Maria - Sigurdsson - Hazard - Sterling - Boyd

    Costa - Ulloa - Aguero

1 FT, 0,2M in the bank.

Any suggestions on what to spend my transfer on? Or should i save it?

Wildcard Team, what do you think?

    Bego (4m)
    Baines, Clyne, Duff, Hutton, Wisdom
    ADM, Hazard, Tadic, Siggy, Boyd
    Costa, Agüero, Welbeck,

It's harder than I thought to get away from the template somehow but I tried. There would be so many interesting options in midfield still I think, like Erikson, Downing, Sanchez, but well, I couldn't fit them in...
I got even that confused that I thought about posting Siggy vs Downing longterm... but well, it passed...

Looks very good. Only concern is having 3 x 4.0 defs, but you should be able to get an easy fixture out of one of them most weeks.

I would keep an eye on Tadic and consider Eriksen if you can afford the difference.

you mean eriksen instead of tadic if tadic keeps on having bad luck?

and I fared well with my cheap def till now, I like it. I checked rotation and it's working out surprisingly well...

        thanks for reply...

    Bego / McCarthy

    Clyne, Ivan, Baines (Moore, Duff)

    Sterling, Siggy, Fabregas, ADM (Boyd)

    Pelle, Welbeck, Costa

Everybody is raving about Hazard now that he scored a pen... but GW4, when he had 13 penalty box touches, 9 succesful dribbles, and 5 shots, but walked away with just 2 points, most people wanted to get rid... madness of crowds...

i think his stats are why people are considering him, he started slowly last season as well and finished as top scoring mid. This is a prime example of using stats to suit you argument, pick his worst gameweek and run with it, Why ?

    Need some advice if possible:

    Team is:
    Begovic Krul
    Taylor Clyne Moreno Duff Moore
    ADM Fabregas Siggy Sterling Scheiderlein
    Ulloa Falcao Costa

2 FTs this week and £0.9m ITB.
Players on my radar are Forster, Baines, Ivanovic/Azpi, Chambers, 4.4m MID for Schneiderlein and Welbeck/Pelle.

Looking to get rid of Begovic, Moreno, Duff, Schneiderlein and Ulloa.

What should I do? What transfers should I prioritise? I want to do all of these transfers now but no wildcard 🙄

Haven't taken any points hits yet this season, are they really worth it? Its not like I am struggling with injuries.

    Thanks in advance.

As a United fan I'm personally indifferent on this one. Some players blag an injury when they can't be arsed or value a league game over an international. At least he is being honest and not claiming a phantom injury.

As an owner I hope he scores 2 unassisted in a 3-2 defeat.

What a load of old balls. He might want to remember that he had a few injuries himself early on and that (despite what Newcastle fans think) he was never the same player after he left Blackburn...

I actually can't fathom the abuse he's getting. It's ridiculous.

I agree with Granville in that ownership shouldn't be a factor when buying a player. Yes you could suffer a heavy drop if a highly owned player does well that you don't own, but you can also soar up the ranks when a lower owned player does well that you do own. Two sides to the coin. Either way, you should just buy who you think scores the most points, surely?

The flip side is still an ownership factor in my books.

Did you not get hammered last season when you ditched Suarez?

This ain't meant as an attempt to rile or nark.

Its actually on topic and quite relevant to the discussion which I've some views on.

I think so. I was 99th at one stage so I took a risk. I don't think I was 'hammered' because my alternatives did well.

Either way, I'm not sure what your point is. Because I said in my post you could suffer a heavy drop if the highly owned players score well...

I remember it well. You took a risk when highly ranked which was commendable. He who dares Rodders an' all that.
iirc, Suarez did have a mini slump, you just did it slightly early.

Yeah Suarez does have those weird patches. Remember when he used to miss about 20 shots a match? 😆

As said above it ain't an attempt to rile or nark.

But my point is exactly the heavy drop point.

Players have high ownership for a reason and that's generally point returns and form. I think there is definite weight in the covering yourself theory in that when high ownership players hit the average is usually very high and if players don't have a certain collective mix of these players the chances are their rank will take a battering.

Yes you'll move up with a differential hitting but that differential player could be at the expense of a highly owned in form player who is also hitting.

They have high ownership because they scored well in the recent past. No point closing your eyes and sticking with the crowd if you don't think he'll score as well as other players.

I see the heavy drop when not owning high-ownership players as a 'bad judgement call', rather than 'not covering high-ownership players'. Not owning Suarez for a few weeks was a bad judgement call on my behalf, it was not because I didn't collect all the high ownership players.

It was a bad judgement call that was compounded by huge ownership thou.

And that ain't or any of this ain't meant as a dig.

Oh don't worry, I never thought of it as a dig 🙂

But if it was a good call you get an equally huge rise! It balances out. At the end of the day it's about whether they perform or not, which is a judgement call.

I pay no attention to it. As you say, I buy who I think will score the most points and shockingly that tends to be highly owned players.

Yes, I agree. The thing is typically the players who have high ownership are both players who have recently been bringing in points and have underlying stats to back it up so are comfortable picks for the future. I feel like it is rare that a player gets to the 30% or higher ownership level that the bulk of us here on FFS at least think is / will be a flop. Normally those types of players who garner that ownership have a very good reason for it.

      You should, but... 😉

If Falcao starts scoring and you don't think he'll keep it up, you'd probably just leave him because of low ownership. (Obviously his ownership would rise, but initially..)

If ADM carries on scoring and you don't think he'll keep it up, you'd feel you need to get him, just in case he continues and you suffer.

I think this was the point. Although I do agree with both arguments to an extent. 🙂

Agree with you GB...at 99th OR you have to do something different...You got into a position to win the whole thing so at that point you have to do something different to those above you..it's not quite the same as fighting just for a high OR.
I had the same problem in the WC in the Fox game...13th OR near the end so had to sell one of the top picks and hope they bombed (I dropped Muller because all those above me had him)...sadly he didn't..It was still the right thing to do though.

Is Baines realllly essential? Next week I want to do -

Chadli & Dawson/Kaboul IN then Sterling & Pieters out.

Slowly want to free up funds to fit Aguero in the team.
