Stick or twist? The dilemma of whether to hold key players dominated much of the discussion within the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as stubborn and risk-taking Fantasy mangers prepared to do battle in Gameweek 10.

Whether you’re looking to ditch or keep your main assets, there was a feast of information to gorge on throughout the week, with our hot topics, articles and members tables helping to finalise those last-minute transfer plans. We look back on all that activity and, as ever, find time to catch up on the latest ups and downs in our community competitions.

The Community Articles

The Puntmaster has been assessing potential replacements for Gylfi Sigurdsson after taking a look at the Swansea man’s declining attacking threat and poor upcoming fixtures. Our regular scribe was back later in the week with his regular trio of punts, including another potential midfield replacement for the Icelandic international, for those who fancy taking a chance on a differential.

The Sarjeant also turned up with his popular regular, offering up further analysis of current form throughout the Premier League. Meanwhile, Sticky Mockwell provided his report on the effectiveness of goalkeeper rotation over the opening nine Gameweeks. It provided a timely reminder on the merits of a pair of active, alternating stoppers.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There are a multitude of factors to ponder ahead of Gameweek 10: the choice of options in midfield being a major consideration. Right now, there are a handful of premium midfielders vying for our attention, whilst a slump in output amongst some popular Fantasy picks, allied with the ongoing uncertainty over Diego Costa’s minutes, suggests that the forthcoming set of fixtures could shake-up mini leagues.

On one side of the battle lines there are the “Twisters” who are ditching the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Costa and Raheem Sterling without a second thought. In the other corner there are the “Stickers”, resolutely clinging on to their fading stars in hope that class is permanent and a revival is on the way. In our discussion on which camp will prevail this weekend, Jafalad was among those who believe Costa ditchers will be left disappointed.

Later in the week we pondered whether we should welcome this apparent break up of the template team . Baines on Toast was among those who joined the discussion, stating that, with so many good expensive midfield options and just five slots, it’s impossible to “catch ‘em all”.

Such is the tension surrounding this week’s transfer decisions, there was even talk that Sergio Aguero may falter due to Manchester City’s poor form and midweek injury concerns around David Silva and Yaya Toure. Demi sparked this discussion to gather the community’s derby day predictions. Meanwhile, Beavis proclaimed that, even without Silva, Aguero has the form to shine. His excellent number crunching certainly puts forward a compelling case for captaining the Argentine hit man, with or without Silva’s craft providing the ammunition.

Chelsea have arguably one of the best fixtures of the week as they entertain QPR at Stamford Bridge. However, with Jose Mourinho continuing to be vague over Costa’s minutes earlier in the week, Rickardinho was eyeing up other Chelsea options and urged the community to consider Oscar’s excellent recent form and his high points tallies against “lesser” sides.

Over on the other side of London, Agbonlahorse has been looking into Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck’s potential. He’s far from impressed and wonders whether cheap strikers at big clubs, such as Welbeck and Everton’s Steven Naismith, are duping us into thinking they will perform beyond their price tag.

In contrast, Everton’s defence may be expensive but is worth every penny, according to MOTR in his run down of the pros and cons of doubling up on the Toffees backline.

Wakey’s Falling Stars team regularly reveals others that are making a mockery of their price tag. Each week he builds an XI comprised of those that have suffered price falls below their initial valuation. Gameweek 9 was another success story for Wakey’s ensemble, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Swansea’s Wilfried Bony performing well. Valuation was also being discussed by Milanista, who issued another call to FPL to disclose the secret calculations behind their price changes.

Price is something the community’s weekly Scout Pick champions need to keep a close eye on as they take on the Scouts with just a 83.5m budget. Saniul brought some much needed credibility back to the title of Scout Pick Community Champion last week by beating Paul’s total. This week’s champion, Magerost, will be hoping to do even better with his election winning set of picks. Just a reminder that our search for a community champion now takes place in its own community article, published the Monday before each Gameweek at 10am.

Finally, Nighthiker took a look back at some of the pre-season bandwagon flops the community optimistically drafted in for Gameweek 1. Meanwhile, Evs embarked on a more jolly stroll down memory lane in his discussion about the season’s best players and moments so far.

The Members Tables

Liverpool’s poor form in front of goal was a key issue covered in this week’s members tables. In my assist imminent table Liverpool midfielders dominate, showing just how badly they need Daniel Sturridge back to convert the many chances they are still creating.

The Fantasy Freak specifically took a look at Raheem Sterling to see just how he compares to one of this week’s most popular transfers Alexis Sanchez. Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli rides high in Erlando’s table looking at trigger happy players who are notching up a prolific number of goal attempts. His poor goal scoring form is clearly not for the want of trying.

The Community Tournaments

The Tinkerman increased his lead in the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league over second placed Mark.

Rasping Drive continues to top The Puffinboy Memorial Cup, for our veteran posters as well as the FFS Old Farts Club and the FFS Deadzone leagues.

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Mr Rabbit hit the top score in Gameweek 9 with 74. There are now 997 teams left after 57 were eliminated after the safety score was set at 30.

The FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup reaches the semi-final stage in Gameweek 10. Here’s the latest from ENR looking back at the group stages and ahead to the weekend’s fixtures.

Much has been made of Kieran Trippier’s attacking potential, and yet he is yet to record a single goal or assist this season.

The stats suggest that the pre-season hype was not unjustified, however. He leads the way on Crosses and Crosses Completed for all defenders. An incredible 65 crosses in 9 matches so far means he’s averaging over 7 per game, which is also more than 20 crosses ahead of Leighton Baines, the next highest ranked defender.

Only Dusan Tadic, Angel Di Maria and Stewart Downing have attempted more, and it’s worth noting that whilst these other players also have the benefit of set pieces making up a significant portion of their totals, Trippier has taken just a single corner so far.

The problem then, seems not to be with the service Trippier is providing, but rather with the team-mates on the receiving end. Only Baines, Cresswell and Ivanovic have created more chances among defenders, yet whilst these full backs all feature in free-scoring sides, Burnley have managed just 5 goals so far.

Partly, of course, this is down to Burnley being a poor Premier League side, and they will simply not score very many goals. However, Sam Vokes and Danny Ings, the strike partnership who fired them to promotion with 20+ goals apiece, have largely been absent. Vokes is yet to feature, whilst Ings picked up a hamstring injury in GW4, ruling him out for three more games, until his return in the last two matches. Trippier’s reliance on quality finishers to convert his crosses into goals can be seen in his two seasons under Sean Dyche in the Championship:

In 2013/14, 6 of Trippier’s 14 assists were for Danny Ings goals (43%), whilst 3 assisted Vokes. Together, more than 64% of his assists provided one of those strikers with the opportunity to score.

In 2012/13, two thirds of Trippier’s assists led to goals scored by Charlie Austin, Burnley’s top scorer that season. 8 of his 12 assists were put away by the man now plying his trade at Loftus Road.

I apologise for the length of this post on a 4.9m defender, at a winless team, bottom of the table, who has failed to record any attacking returns in FPL! That said, I think his potential is clear to see. This week marks the return of Dean Marney for the Clarets – with him in the side, Burnley conceded only 4 goals in 5 games, and managed 3 straight clean sheets, so his presence suggests a boost to Trippier’s chances of CS returns, as well.

Danny Ings’s confidence will be up after he got off the mark in Premier League last week, and given that he is the man Trippier’s assist potential is most dependent on, this is excellent news. After their visit to the Emirates, Burnley have four home fixtures in their next 6 - HUL/sto/AVL/NEW/qpr/SOU – it may well be the best opportunity for Trippier to really deliver all season!

Although his stats suggest he's a good FPL player - stats don't get you points, unfortunately.

Until he starts getting returns, I won't be going anywhere near, I'm afraid.

It is more his immense returns in the championship that interest me. If Burnley do well he will be involved.

The issue is they might be be so bad they even lose in this easy run of fix!

Yeah... His Championship performance attracted interest, and I'm saying there's reason to be optimistic he could definitely still get plenty of assists for a defender in the Premier League. Burnley's quality is the main thing though - if the team, and Danny Ings particularly, can't make the step up, then his FPL points will reflect that.

Last season elmohamady was the most prolific crosser in the league, I bought him in when Hull bought Jelavic and Long in the summer, 2 players very good in the air. It was a big fat fail, I'd wait for the points to start rolling in before buying.

That's fair. I think crosses can be one of the more misleading stats - at times it's a sign of a lack of ideas in a team, as they just repeatedly get it in the box, not posing too much of a threat to the opposition's defence. That Manchester United game under Moyes, against Fulham I think, where they came out with record breaking numbers of crosses spring to mind. However, unlike Elmo, Trippier is classed as a defender, which I think is key - you're getting the CS points (if Burnley get any!) as a safety net and bonus on top of the assist potential.

True, Burnley have the fixtures to warrant getting him for his CS potential alone I guess. If the assists start rolling in its a bonus.

I have to bench one every week because Downing is my 5th mid. Don't want to have those points on my bench.

Which of those 3 would you play this week?

      RP:

Any ideas? 0.4m in the bank, 1 FT and more than willing to take a hit 🙂

      DDG
      Baines Bertrand WIsdom (Chester, Duff)
      ADM Sigurdsson Tadic Sterling
      Aguero Lukaku Pelle

      On DDG + Sterling---->Foster + Hazard atm.
Any way I could get some Arsenal in? Sanchez about to rise 😕

Could do Siggy + Sterling ----> Aarons + Sanchez but that would leave me with no Chelsea and a rotation risk.

      Cheers

To Costa or not to Costa, that is the question. As of right now, I'm on:

      Guzan (Krul)
      Ivanovic-Baines-Rose (Wisdom, Steven Taylor)
      Sterling-Tadic-Sigurdsson-Fabregas (c) (Boyd)
      Aguero(v)-Pelle-Berahino

The only way to get Costa in is to get Aguero out (which, if I want to stick with Costa permanently, I'm OK with, but if I'm going to want to swap Aguero back in, I'll take at least an 0.3M hit. No transfers used this week yet. Thoughts? Would also appreciate opinions on benching Wisdom against LEI.

      Thoughts needed:

      Krull
      Jagielka - Alderweid - Caulker
      Fabregas - Sterling - Tadic - Siggy
      Aguero - Costa - Welbeck

      Mannone - Barton - N.Taylor - Duff
      0.4 ITB
      1FT

      a) defense trade (Caulker or Taylor). And for who?
      b) deal/dwgrade Barton

      Any ideas, please?

      Schmeichel
      Terry - Wilson - Bertrand
      Silva - Siggy - Sterling - Tadic
      Pellè - Agüero - Costa(C)

      Gilks, Wisdom, Coloccini, Marney

Got 0,3 in the bank and 2 ft..

Silva is the obvious one out, but for who?
Eriksen? Chelsea mid? Sanchez? Would maybe like to get Alexis for this qw, but then would have to downgrade siggy to someone really cheap, or sterling to someone.. And not too sure about Arsenals fixtures after this.. Are they really that easy people are saying?

Walcott would be great for me, but too early(?). What do you guys think about Ramsey?

      Thank you!!!

Common phrase I hear on ffs:

"He looks promising, but I won't buy him til he starts scoring points."

Translation: I'll miss his big haul, probably in an easy fixture, and then chase his points.

Guys: There are times you want to time it to get a big player JUST BEFORE he explodes, and often it is possible to do so. If a player has been unlucky, but has good stats, good fixtures and you're convinced of his quality... BUY HIM!

This season many did exactly that with aguero, tadic, Sanchez etc.

Many others are now chasing their points.

We know who played it better!

I was too early on aguero but have no regrets!

In fact with all 3, being too early was far superior to being too late given the extent of their explosions.
