With Crystal Palace and Sunderland set to play out the Gameweek later this evening, we cast an eye over the matches so far. Chelsea’s improving playmaker, Tottenham’s young forward, the Swans’ backline and Arsene Wenger’s tactical tweak are all amongst our lunchtime menu.

We can add Oscar to the Chelsea midfield mix..
The only player to earn his manager’s praise after a stuttering 2-1 home win over QPR, the Brazilian is starting to rival Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard for our affections in the Blues midfield. Oscar managed just a single assist in the first five Gameweeks but took his tally to three goals, two assists and seven bonus points in the subsequent five – at 8.3 and owned by just 3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, he seems an ideal differential route into the champions’ attack right now.

Kane merits more minutes…
The youngster’s impact off the bench was key to salvaging the three points for Tottenham at Villa yesterday. Whilst Kane’s deflected free-kick ultimately earned the visitors a victory, his energy up front provided Mauricio Pochettino’s side a much-needed spark after front two Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor failed to impress. It’s seven goals in as many matches in all competitions now for the youngster, who has still yet to start a league match – that, surely, is set to change as Spurs welcome Stoke to the Lane next Sunday.

The Swans are made of stern stuff..
Whilst Southampton have mainly hogged the headlines for defensive returns, Garry Monk’s side are showing plenty of resilience, too. A goalless draw against Everton drew criticism from Toffees boss Roberto Martinez but, despite playing with 10 men for almost half of the second period, the visitors emerged from Goodison as the first side to stop Everton from scoring this season. Now up to five clean sheets for the campaign – just one fewer than the Saints – Monk’s more pragmatic approach is clearly paying off for the sixth-placed side this term.

Sanchez is a force of nature through the middle…
Over the last couple of Gameweeks, Arsene Wenger seems to have found the perfect role for his summer signing from Barcelona. Previously fielded on the right or left flanks, Sanchez has thrived through the middle alongside Danny Welbeck, with his manager’s decision to opt for a 4-4-2 proving hugely beneficial to Fantasy managers. The Chilean’s stats and returns in recent matches reflect his out-of-position potential and have taken him to the top of the FPL standings – still only owned by 22% of managers, that figure is set to rise considerably, with 120,000 already taking the plunge since the weekend.

Downing works better in the centre…
The absence of Diafra Sakho forced the West Ham midfielder onto the right in a tactical reshuffle by Sam Allardyce at Stoke on Saturday. The Hammers boss started the match with a 4-3-3, but with his side a goal down at the break, realized his error and shifted Downing back to the top of a midfield diamond for the second period. A goal and assist inspired the visitors to a draw and cemented Downing’s place in our thoughts ahead of a kind-looking run of matches for Allardyce’s side, which is sure to bring more investors his way.

Irvine’s the anti-tinkerman…
A 1-0 win at Leicester handed the Foxes their first home defeat of the season and continued Alan Irvine’s recent good work at the West Brom helm. The Baggies have now earned three victories and two draws in the last six Gameweeks and fundamental to this has been a lack of rotation which makes their starting XI one of the easiest for Fantasy managers to predict. Irvine has made one change to his XI over that period – the enforced absence of on-loan Andre Wisdom against parent club Liverpool, tellingly the only defeat over that run – and it’s clear that a consistency of selection is reaping reward.

Sterling’s a victim of his own versatility…
Prior to the weekend trip to Newcastle, Brendan Rodgers had hinted at a change in tactics as Liverpool continue to struggle without the stricken Daniel Sturridge. Given that the Reds boss had also talked up Fabio Borini’s chances of a starting berth, there were hopes of a move to a midfield diamond, with Sterling at the tip, but instead the Italian was benched and the youngster shuttled out to the right flank in a 3-5-2 formation. Sterling failed to register a single attempt in the 1-0 loss and now has one goal in seven appearances without Sturridge in the XI – we need him in the middle to flourish as a Fantasy prospect, but with Sturridge expected to be out until after the international break, that scenario seems unlikely, and as Liverpool prepare for the visit of Chelsea, the transfers out are gaining momentum.

Fellaini and Januzaj remain in the United mix…
Granted, neither of the Belgians produced the goods in yesterday’s derby defeat at City but it was telling that both kept their places in spite of Wayne Rooney’s return from suspension. Instead, Juan Mata was the fall guy as Louis van Gaal retained Fellaini’s physicality in the middle and Januzaj’s trickery out wide in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the Etihad trip. Both players seem to have nudged their way up the pecking order in recent weeks, with the likes of Ander Herrera also demoted to the bench, and with three very kind home fixtures in the next four, the mid-price pair may even force their way onto Fantasy radars if Van Gaal maintains the same tactical set-up. Despite the absence of Radamel Falcao, Rooney’s role in “the hole” highlights the fact that Van Gaal is clearly happier with his captain tucked in behind Robin van Persie, perhaps diminishing his appeal in some managers’ eyes ahead of United’s kind schedule.

Harry’s hopes of staying up may rely on Austin…
The R’s rolled up to Stamford Bridge with many expecting a goal glut from the home side. Whilst fit-again Diego Costa failed to find the net for the first time in front of his own supporters this term, Charlie Austin was the form forward on show, breaching the Blues backline to take his tally to four goals and an assist in the last five Gameweeks. When on the pitch, Austin has now played a part in 66.7% of QPR’s goals this season – given that’s the same percentage as Sergio Aguero for City, albeit on a lesser level, it’s fair to say that the 5.7-priced Austin could be the difference between survival and a drop into the Championship for Redknapp’s side.

Apologies for posting this again, but my Football Manager blog got some positive comments on here the other week, so here is my new blog post (on a topic slightly more serious than FM...):

    http://goandgettheguitar.wordpress.com/

Any feedback would be great, and if you like it, read the others/click follow at the top! It will only take a minute to read, and might make a nice break from Alexis Sanchez questions!

      TLDR 😉

But seriously - how is the kindle/iPad version of FM compared to the normal game?

It's nowhere near as detailed, it's more like a Champ Man game. Ideal for commuting though; I try not to play it at home anymore, so it's good to fly through games and not spend an hour changing training regimes or hiring coaching staff.I recommend it (although this morning I lost in the Champions League final with Leicester - I looked even more miserable than the average London worker on the rush hour tube).

          Ha, bad luck.

I do a fair bit of travelling with my job, so having FM on the iPad could help while away some long haul flights and boring evenings in hotel rooms.

Might download it before my next trip. Cheers.

I don't know how you generate your site, but you can normally play around with your Wordpress themes, loading new ones up and trying them out, until you get one that has most of what you need.

Cheers Spencer, I'll have to watch that on iPlayer! How's your season going? After leaving a dead team last year (I moved from Liverpool to London and got sidetracked), I'm trying to beat my 2012/13 rank of 296 - not far off it at all after captaining Sanchez last week!

Valencia is pretty much always going to be played as a forward, where as Sakho will sometimes be moved wide when needed.

I'd still go with Sakho though.

Ta - I'm looking at the pair as options if I ditch Welbeck this weekend.

          It's either:

          Welbeck ---> Valencia/Sakho,
          or
          Sterling ---> Downing

Not quite sure which to do.

Begovic is a horrible pick, but if you have the same luck with GK's as me, it doesn't matter who you choose. Starting 11 looks great. For the bench, I'd change either Moore or PVA to Wisdom, maybe Marney to Boyd if you have an extra transfer laying around.

So how do you think Man United are doing under LVG tenure so far?

As a comparison I decided to compare his record to date with his predecessor.

    Under Moyes:

    League

    Played 10, Scored 17, Conceded 13, GD +4, Points 17

    League Cup

Beat Liverpool round 3, Norwich round 4, Stoke round 5, Lost to Sunderland on penalties in Semi Final

    Champions League

Qualified top of their group ahead of Leverkusen, Donetsk and Sociedad.

    Under LVG

    League

    Played 10, Scored 16, Conceded 14, GD +2, Points 13

    League Cup

knocked out round 2 by MK Dons.

Pretty stark reading considering LVG has spent circa £180m to put this team together.

Bring back Moyes all is forgiven?

      Those figure are correct.
I think Moyes suffered from following in Safs shoes, looking back the bar was so high he was doomed.
All of a sudden Utd have got used to failure and already are kinda accepting it which when you add the money spent and LVGs reputation is wrong and unfair on where Moyes was,
Personally if things don't pick up by Xmas and Utd don't look like making top 4 I would say Yes, LVG out.

I agree with all of the above. The thing I don't understand is that United supporters think they are going to finish ahead of Arsenal this season???

United really need to do some serious improving and with the defenders they have I don't see it happening this season.

Maybe if they reinforce over the winter they could possibly kick on a bit like Liverpool last season but they don't have a Suarez or Sturridge whose barnstorming displays packed full of energy was what drove Liverpool on. United on the otherhand are looking at players like RVP and Rooney who were producing those barnstorming energy packed displays 4 or 5 years ago but just don't seem to have it in them any more. I thought it was telling to hear Rooney say he used to run about a lot more when he was younger but now he picks and chooses when is the right time to run about. By the time he has though about whether to make a run the chance to do it has usually passed. He either needs to get back to playing football like he used to when he was young or else Utd need to get rid imo.

Agree, there's no chance of finishing above Arsenal(3rd) ,
4th is up for grabs and ATM I fancy Soton,
Everton/Spurs/pool/Utd may feel they have a remote chance here.
LVG has improved selection wise over the last few weeks, he has realised he can't win games with all forward minded players.
He needs more of a balance and a few defenders in jan to have any chance if 4th.
Losing to City isn't the end all but drawing at Burnley and lising to Leicester is simply not acceptable-if he can't figure this out he should go,
United need to get back to going the simple things well and the rest will follow,
For me right now I'm not sure they will. (Utd supporter btw Dino)

Nice to hear a reasonable assessment from a Man U supporter and good to see your expectations match that too. Fair play to you it must be tough to accept the way things are now for your team but the good thing is that with the money spent united are not far away from the top 4 again in my opinion. A bit of defensive reinforcements in the next couple of transfer windows and ye are easily the match of anything outwith the top 3 imo.

Ps I'd see the top 4 almost the same as you but I think it is between Spurs and United (lack of cup fixtures should mean they finish strong) with Everton and Liverpool battling for 6th (due to their European commitments). Maybe Saints might hang in there but I can't see it myself, the squad is still a bit light for a sustained tilt at the top 4 imo. I called Liverpool to finish outside top 6 this season due to CL and Suarez departure and still think it has a big chance of happening.

I still have hope for Liverpool. Obviously struggling but if Sturridge can get fit for about 20 of the remaining fixtures I think they can grab that 4th spot.

the problem for me is the amount of fixtures they have to play and no time on the training pitch to fix things. Last season they had all week to prepare tactically for their next opponents and they were still dire defensively.

I wouldn't begrudge them getting 4th as I like the way BR likes to try and play football but I really can't see it.

Yeah, it'll certainly be tough. But the wins against Saints and Spurs with Sturridge have me relatively bullish. Plus they'll be out of Champions soon enough and if they play completely second string sides in Europa that should benefit them.

The problem is there is nothing to suggest that if they drop into the EL that they will play second string sides. If anything they might try and even more to win that one as it gives the winner a CL place next season.

A lot will become clearer once Sturridge is back as you say. Maybe with Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling (Like the back end of the season before last when Suarez was banned) together again they might be able to rekindle their mojo.

I have always been of the opinion that collectively, MUN turned into complete shits, during Moyse's brief tenure.

Now they are reaping what they have sown, and I wish them well of it. In my opinion, the team is held together with chicken wire, and I do not expect them in the top six this year.

Interesting take Doosra but moral dilemma aside I think LVG will have enough time on the training ground to mould them into a side good enough to definitely get top 6 and most likely top 4. If he had to put up with what Moyes had to do with League cup run to semi finals and Champions league games every midweek and no reinforcements my prediction would not be the same.

A fair point, which I take. My riposte would be: look at Citeh. There is definitely something gumming up the works there.

Now, we know there are some appalling attitudes in the United dressing room - and I would back the whole machine to fall apart before Christmas.

            You might be right Doosra.

If that is the case then United are rightly screwed so as imo they need to get Champions league football this season or else they will struggle even more to recruit top players next summer after being blanked by a host of targets this summer.

They have thrown some amount of money at it this summer and surely they will start to but up against ffp soon enough if they don't get into the CL again soon? I think the league is better with a strong United so it will be a sad day if they don't turn it around.

Current Squad with 3 mil in the bank:

    Foster/Myhill
    Baines-Bertrand-Taylor-Wisdom-Moore
    Fabregas-Downing-Siggy-Tadic-Jedinak
    Aguero-Costa-Welbz

Over the next 2 weeks thinking about doing the following:

    Tadic---->ADM
    Welbz---->Sakho
    Siggy----->Walcott

    Good Moves?

My first real bit of luck in a long time!
I started the week on wisdom but I always felt it would be a low scoring affair so I decided to switch to the home team around Friday-Moore in,
then Sat am when out'n about I decided to go back to wisdom but I lost coverage on my phone around 11.25-fate I declared!
I hadn't realised Moore didn't play when I heard the final result and was pissed at myself but to my dismay sat night I saw a 0 by Moore and then I realised he didn't start as I was just cursing him (while checking team sheets) and happiness was restored!

I have Wisdom and Naylor on the bench, went with PVA, so I won't be happy if he does badly.

My best ever week defensively: aside from PVA, my squad had Foster, Krul, Baines, Bertrand, Naylor and Wisdom - 6 CS out of 6 so far!

Would you rather sell Albrighton for Di Maria, and stash Siggy on the bench for a couple weeks, or sell Siggy and have an extra 2.1 million for future upgrades? Team below, if relevant.

    Krulliot

    Clyne-Wisdom-Chambers (Terry-Moore)

    Sanchez-Tadic-Downing-Siggy (Albrighton)

    Aguero-Pelle-Welbeck

I have a similar Siggy-related issue. My plan is to stash him on the bench and sub in Downing.

Cheers. It's a tough one. It'd be nice to have a full front 8 again, but it will make getting Costa/Hazard a bit trickier.

I'm so frustrated with Liverpool's signings:

Markovic 20M ---> For 20M you think he'd be the next Messi. Way too high of a transfer fee for "potential"

Lallana 25M ---> Great player but we hardly play him! His transfer fee was too high as well.

Lambert 4M ---> Great season and for 4M buying him wasn't too bad. But does he get to play? No. So why did we sign him?

Lovren 20M ---> Why the hell did we replace Agger (who is a lot better) for Lovren? We could of just stayed with Agger, Sakho, Skrtel and Toure rotating. We let Agger go for nothing too.

Origi 10M ---> I support this buy. Not to high of a fee for a player with good potential. Shame we couldn't get him this season.

Balotelli 16M ---> Panic buy if you ask me. Not enough high-profile strikers on the market so we settled for him. A striker with Remy's playstyle would of suited us better like Lacazette. As least we made our money back through shirt sales.

Can 10M -He brings something different to the team and is quite good for his age. His versatility is nice as well.

Moreno 12M - Under fire for a couple mistakes but looks very promising for the future.

Manquillo - Great decision getting on a 2 year loan. Our RB spot looks strong now.

Reina - Why did we sell him considering how awful Mignolet was last season? I will never know.

Rodgers has made a lot of terrible inflated transfers. He got lucky with Sturridge and Coutinho. Nobody thought they would do well. We got players like Alberto, Aspas and Ilori wasting away too.

I don't think he got lucky with Sturridge at all. His talent was clear, it had just gone unharnessed.

      My thoughts:

Lallana: if picked more often, and crucially in the same side as Countinho could excel. Didn't have a pre-season and will come good.

      Can: Needs time.

Moreno: Agree. Worrying that he could have avoided both mistakes by using his right foot! Ricardo Rodriguez would have been my shout but he would have cost double.

Manquillo: Great defender (far better than GJ). Limited on the ball but should model himself on Ivanovic who is effective through good movement rather than dribbling etc.

Lovren: Unneccessary signing if he is seen as the left sided CB (already have Sakho). Should play right of Sakho, Defence looked better in the few games they have played together. Front foot defender which is needed when pressing.

      Markovic: Shown nothing.

Balotelli: Despite body language, he has actually been working hard. Problem is decision making and shoot on site policy killing attacking moves. Can come good if taught to get head up and pass. Needs to run behind more.

      Lambert: Needs game time.

Players like Aspas, Alberto etc. are punts at 4-6m in today's market.

      Try 20m for Moreno!

I was discussing this pre-season when it emerged Suarez was going for such big money. BR transfer record is terrible and it looks like he has wasted all that cash Suarez generated for Liverpool. This was a golden chance with the Suarez money and the extra TV money due to new sky deal as well as new commercial deals and Champions League for Liverpool to push on and be a proper top 4 club.

In my opinion what is worse is BR has blown it from a player resource point of view also. He has flogged Sterling in a meaningless league cup game and has played his strongest team in the Champions league. Liverpool first priority this season should have been to try and secure consecutive top 4 EPL placings. They should have played reserve teams in all the cups and concentrated on pushing for top 4 again as this is what will attract the top young talent around the world to them. Saying you got top 4 one season with Luis Suarez in the team is not going to entice the next Messi to sign up at Anfield over Borusia Dortmund.
