As we brace ourselves for yet another international break, we turn to Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures and delve into the data in our first members article of the week. We assess Southampton’s chief creator and main frontman as the points start to dry up, cast an eye over Chelsea’s penalty box predator, Man City’s talismanic Argentine and Newcastle’s recent defensive displays as the clean sheets keep coming for Alan Pardew’s men.

I prefer downing over Chadli.. on set pieces and Westham in good attacking form. Spurs have been HORRID going forward and look liek they've run out of ideas. Chadli relies purely on open play to score goals(no set pieces) and he cant do much if he does not get the supply. can see his points drying up soon

I'm sure many of you have been in the 200k-500k rank range, and the top 5k / top 10k. Just curious as to how your strategy changes the higher in rank you are?

Is it a case of starting to follow the crowd abit more, spending more time on picking captains, minimal hits, keeping a strong core of highly-owned players etc.

Feel free to share your thoughts below - seems like many are having a good season unlike previous ones. Might be a good time to share some stories!

I don't change strategy based on rank, but I have moved overall from a huge focus on fixtures, to more focus on value and captains, with fixtures less dominant to my picks.

I did once change style based on rank - when in the top 1k with 5-6 GWs left, I decided to be extremely aggressive in the hope of getting even higher. I ended up around 4 thousandth so that failed somewhat!

great points. tend to agree with focus on value, captains and form. I've definitely learned that fixtures are a fallacy and can't be seen in isolation unless it's a clear case of 2 teams in opposite forms (as case was for Arsenal v Burnley).

I find personally, in my ML, in the past when i'm leading, I took more notice to other teams chasing and tried to block - but that messed up my own plan and team structure and usually end up losing the lead.

However, this season i'm trying to focus on my own team, stick to my own plan and transfer strategy. Working thus far.

I do definitely still care a lot about fixtures. The mistake I made in previous seasons though, was selling a player with amazingly good value for someone not particularly consistent, just because of a shift in fixtures.

Now I have certain limitations beyond which I won't sell players based on fix.

But for he price (9M which most paid) he is a bargain for ticking over points each week. A more reliable and consistent David Silva. It also means I can afford other players like Sánchez and ADM for the chance of explosive returns.

Cheap strikers are a constant source of discussion on here yet I'm not sure anybody actually ever gets any of their points. By their nature, they are almost always inconsistent and hit form in fleeting moments, so by the time everybody has got them their moment is up. I've been burnt by Naismith and Ulloa before deciding it's simply not worth it, especially when there's 6mil mids who are delivering most weeks.

      fair point

but I still need one cheap striker to support my Aguero Costa, two premium mids, three cheap mids, and a big hitting defense where I'll start four most weeks... until I improve team value a bit more

Multiple have noted (including a number of mods) that Frank Black puts in a consistently good effort with the Scout Picks Community Challenge. I think it was a comment by Atletico Timbo that made me notice.

I looked a bit more, and he does make a great effort every week. Thus, I have decided to support the Frank Black candidacy for community champion until he wins.

He was without a grav when I met him, but I did subsequently encourage him to get a grav to help his candidacy, which he did... though I almost regret that part.

I think that's most of the story. Have seldom chatted with him, but seems like a very good guy who puts a solid effort in every week for the Community Challenge.

        That's all, really.

any link to his challenge team for this week? I stopped voting for the picks once it became a popularity contest around GW4-5.

didn't see this until later (obviously)

community challenge is not in community articles section, and it isn't out yet for this week

part of my support for him is the precise issue you brought up, it shouldn't be a popularity contest

meh this transfer business would be so much easier if i had just done sterling>sanchez to begin with instead of complicating things with siggy>oscar... sigh

yeah... well regret is like that

I could have brought in Sanchez at 10.3 but went for Hazard

Of course, I now just had enough money to bring in Costa for Pelle and would have been .4 short if I had gotten Sanchez so.... meh...

    Krul Elliot
    Baines Terry Chambers Wisdom Hutton
Di Maria Hazard Sigurdsson Eriksen Wanyama
    Agüero Pelle Welbeck

    1 FT, 0.0 ITB

Is this worth getting Sanchez in

    A) Eriksen & Welbeck out for Sanchez & Zamora (would mean I basically have to play Wanyama or Zamora) -4
    B) Eriksen & Welbeck & Terry out for Sanchez & Austin & Trippier
    C) Forget about Sanchez for now and replace Eriksen with someone else like Chadli or Downing

To be fair, if we'd have been offered 1 goal and 4 assists in the last 4 games we'd have accepted that. It just so happened that all those points were in the same game unfortunately (which meant all baps were limited to the same game)

di maria had 6 points, after the next game has amazing fixtures, and stil losing value like he has the plague.

should i do di maria to sanchez for -4 only for financial reasons?

i would do it because Sanchez is a better option atm and "no technique Chadli" and "mr. average Downing" offer better value

p.s. out of those amazing fixtures CPL at home was the easiest imo

Fellaini needs to be back on the bench if Di Maria is going to prosper.

Fellaini doesn't have the flexibility to interchange with Di Maria, while Herrera does. It allows Di Maria to cut in more often with Herrera moving to make up for the runs on the wings. Fellaini can't.

However, Fellaini does offer more defensive resillience in midfield and a bigger presence in attacks while Herrera is abit more likely to lose physical battles in midfield.

Difficult decision for LVG to make next game.

It is interesting. I know that Collins is truly crap - but does BFS?

In every single game since he started playing, the Hammers have been on quite a steep slide down my defensive tables:

    The case against keeping Fabregas:

    - 4 YC's, only a matter of time before he gets a 5th and drops in price
    - People are already selling him (13th most sold player today, -1000)
    - His stats from last 5 matches are significantly worse than his stats from his first 6. His position maps show him playing deeper than before for example, and numbers are also down.
    - He depends a lot on set piece assists for points, but 3 of his next 4 games are against teams who concede very few headed chances and chances from set pieces (Newcastle, Sunderland, WBA)
    - Oscar takes just as many FK's as him (0.4 per game each).

Anyone disagree with this, or have any comments to add?

    1. rickardinho
      • 11 Years
      11 years, 5 months ago

Cheaper options like Siggy, Chadli, Downing, and Oscar are in better form than him right now too, and selling him could also help get ADM/Hazard/Sanchez.

I think you are missing the bigger picture here, Rick. I've just watched the Liverpud game and I noticed that Henderson went man to man the whole game.

          Forget this game.

He will keep producing all season long. If you take the view that CHS are the team to beat, Fabs will be in the points for a good deal longer.

You make some interesting points but for me, a CHS mid is essential.

          1. rickardinho
            • 11 Years

Good points. Fabregas also played QPR and cpl though which contribute to the more withdrawn positions too, not just the Liverpool game.

I agree that a Chelsea mid is essential, but thats why I have Oscar 😉 ... he's more advanced, takes far more shots on goal and touches in the box, and shares FK's with Fab. The only difference is the corners, but as you saw in the Liverpool game, alot of those corners aren't headed at goal directly but bounce around in the box so Fab won't get that many assists from that really.

I'll gladly take 1.1m saving between Fab-Oscar and go and get Sanchez instead now that Oscar has showed that he is nailed on (while Fabregas is "injured" or "might be rested") 🙂
