The Suspension Tightrope doubled in size after an incident-packed Gameweek 11 brought a host of players closer to an automatic one-match ban. Whilst last week’s seven incumbents managed to steer clear of the referee’s wrath and remain on four yellows, they were joined by a further seven players, with Diego Costa the most notable new entry, after the Chelsea striker kept up his remarkable record of being booked in every away appearance in the league so far.

Having missed back-to-back road trips to Palace and Man United over Gameweeks 8-9, Costa’s caution during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool added to cards accrued at Burnley, Everton and Man City, and given his ability to rack up the yellows on his travels, a ban looks imminent.

Joining Costa on four bookings after their weekend indiscretions are Andreas Weimann, Liam Moore, Richard Dunne, Morgan Schneiderlin and Swansea defensive duo Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams, compounding Garry Monk’s worries at the back, with the likes of Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez both missing the 2-1 win over Arsenal through injury.

Costa’s caution means that the two most popular players in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game are in danger of toppling off the Tightrope. The 56%-owned Chelsea striker joins team-mate Cesc Fabregas (sitting in 53% of teams), whilst Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is another asset with big ownership sailing close to the wind.

In terms of newly banned players, Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton is set to face a two-match suspension after earning his second dismissal of the season last weekend. The right-back was sent packing during Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Stoke after bringing down Victor Moses as the last man, with the Potters winger bearing down on goal. Naughton misses a trip to Hull and home clash with Everton and returns just in time for a Gameweek 14 trip to Chelsea, but with Kyle Walker set to return to first-team training next week, Naughton’s pitch time now looks at major risk.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s decision to appeal Naughton’s ban was rejected by the FA yesterday, after an independent regulatory commission ruled he was guilty of denying Moses a goalscoring opportunity.

Naughton is one of three players suspended for Gameweek 12 duties. QPR defender Rio Ferdinand serves the last of a three-match ban away to Newcastle for his recent Twitter comments, whilst Villa’s Christian Benteke skips the second of a three-match suspension for violent conduct and misses upcoming clashes with Southampton and Burnley.

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers continued his recent ill-disciplined form, and earned a sixth yellow card in just eight Premier League starts for the north London outfit, earning his owners zero points in Sunday’s away loss to Swansea.

Finally, as many as five players return from one-match suspensions in time for Gameweek 12. Both Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and West Brom’s Craig Gardner toppled off the tightrope in Gameweek 10 and, having sat out the previous round of fixtures, are back in contention for matches against Leicester and Chelsea respectively.

Chris Smalling is available for United’s trip to Arsenal, Palace midfielder and spot-kick taker Mile Jedinak is in the frame as Neil Warnock’s side host Liverpool, whilst Jonjo Shelvey returns for Swansea’s testing trip to the Etihad.

    Been offered Lamela in exchange for Ballotelli in my draft league... Reject right?

    Both have been poor, but Balo will get paired with Sturridge soon and has perfect fixtures until February.

        I find the draft league to be a welcome distraction in international break. Hope it's not too annoying to listen to my trade scenarios?! 🙂

          Already have sakho. If he doesnt work I can trade to austin or berahino. But if I have two of them then my options are limited if one doesnt work I think.

      Some of the nonsense on Twitter is just unbelievable. Last season I was watching Japan play somebody - they won the game, Kagawa played well and after the match he was interviewed on TV. I came on here and saw that some buffoon had tweeted,"Kagawa stretchered off with broken leg" which immediately provoked panic. A few people who had also watched the match quashed the nonsense but it was astonishing how many people believed it.

          The feat marks a profound success for the European Space Agency (ESA), which launched the Rosetta spacecraft more than 10 years ago from its Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. Since blasting off in March 2004, Rosetta and its lander Philae have travelled more than 6bn kilometres to catch up with the comet, which orbits the sun at speeds up to 135,000km/h.

    REVELATION 😯

    Brits call it maths because mathematics minus 'ematic' = maths.

    So they used maths to get to maths.

    I'll see myself out..

              Don't diss our league mate, I've been to a Giants vs Eagles game before. the atmosphere is intense. Though sadly it was snowing heavily & their were three drunk guys throwing snowballs at each other in front of us.

                Is like the receiver to be able to pass it again. Each play wouldn't be over so quickly. Be more turnovers. And less commercials.

            I think the solution for the MLS is to split into 2 domestic leagues. We have a 'west coast conference' that has 10+ teams per league with some promotion/relegation (multiple leagues and promotion/relegation will take time to implement have resource for) and a mirror 'east coast conference'.

            3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, most points wins their title. Both title winners can then meet for the MLS Cup which becomes a little more like a glorified friendly cup (like the Super Cup or Charity Shield) than the be all end all of the seaosn.

            Hell you can even put together a league cup of sorts within each league that plays out like a knockout competition within the west/east league separately allowing the minnows a chance to prove their worth against top dogs.

            Problem is, and will be for a while, money. But the other problem is that without some wholesale changes, the money choke may never be resolved.

            It's an idea for when the league has lumbered along enough to see that we have more teams who could realistically play in the MLS than have space for a single league.

    Berahino - Aguero - Welbz

          I think it is folly to have that much money tied up in a 5th midfielder. I would pick one of Downing Tadic or Siggy to downgrade to a 4.4 and use whatever is banked to upgrade Fab to Sanchez and keep whatever is left for your next transfers.

      I sold him last week, but if I still had him I would be looking to get rid immediately. Down to Azpil if you still want a share in Chelsea defense or down to someone else if you are looking to use the funds to upgrade elsewhere. I would keep him if I only had 1 FT though and save it in order to make a double switch the following.

          He's seemed to have about one decent run deep into the opposing box a game over the last few from my eye. He's looked decentish going forward but clearly nowhere near the amount he was in those opening three gameweeks. And obviously not enough to justify his ridiculous 7+ mill tag as he hasn't had an attacking return since August.

    Which do you prefer:

    a) Fab + Wilson -> Chadli + Baines (-4)
    b) Fab + Wilson -> Haz + 3.9m (-4)
    c) Wilson -> 4.5m def
    d) nothing this week; 2 free to deal with Pelle, Fab, Costa (YC) next week)?

      If Fab is going to be out for the next game then I like A. If he will play, D by a mile.

        Great -thanks. I've actually just realised i can't afford A anymore after Chadli's rise. So that might have to be Downing. Eesh.

        Think D seems sensible given possible issues coming up...

      D, followed by A
      Baines will recover the hit tenfold, if Fab is in fact injured for a while, then yes.
      If not D

          Sterling and I don't think it's close. Sturridge's price is very prohibitive with both Kun and Costa firing and also both being better captaincy options than him in my opinion. Sterling is explosive with Sturridge in there as we have seen. Only a matter of time before he bags a brace and everyone is clamoring to get him back in.

      Sterling for me, Muppet. Liverpool have some decent fixtures still and three out of four Christmas games at home. Sturridge is too expensive for his returns but his prescence should lift the team and create more openings for Raheem.

      Its boring but Jagielka -> Baines imo.

      You have no pressing issues atm, although you need to think about getting rid of one of Bertrand and Forster.

      Four maybe options that I can see. Lose Fab if he is out. Get Baines in. Pelle to Costa if you can afford it depending on what your selling price is on him. Save transfer.

    Some interesting reading from The Independent:

    "Chelsea don't seem to like it when the poor weather sets in. A poor winter run cost Luiz Felipe Scolari his job in early 2009 and since then the Blues have struggled in November and December.

    In fact, Chelsea have won just 36 of their 82 matches in those two months since the start of the 2008-09 season, drawing 26 and losing 20 matches, a record of just 43.9 per cent.

    With Chelsea winning an average of 59.1 per cent of all of their matches in those six seasons (with a low of 51 and a high of 70), that figure for November and December becomes more than just an anomaly, it is an annual problem".

          Actually... I've heard this independently from some Chelsea supporters - the cited rationale is the countries of origins of some key players, and a relative weakness in cold weather

      This is the best Chelsea team for several years and they look unstoppable but that statistic is interesting, I think. There could be many causes: fixture congestion, injuries, lack of squad depth and so on. Can't see it happening this year, though.
