Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

    My team and season is starting to stagnate..

    DDG
    Yun Wisdom Chamber
    Hazard Sanchez ADM Siggy
    Costa Aguero(C) Austin

    Hamer Marney Clyne Moore

    1FT. Nothing in the bank

    1 - Costa--->Rooney(C) or Bony(C)
    2 - ADM--->Fabregas
    3 - 1 + 2 for -4

    Aguero Austin

    Schmeichel, Wanyama, Clyne, Costa

      If you went back to long ball football with Nolan playing off him and Jarvis and Downing out wide, he'd score goals and you'd do ok.

      But having played how you have this season, I'd guess that would go down rather badly!

          Depends what you call well.

          You'd survive reasonably comfortably and Nolan and Carroll would both make double figures.

          You would never do as well as you are now though.

    Even with possible rotation, azpil is the best option at 6.2 or under isn't he.

    ADM and Chadli (OUT) for Siggy/Eriksen (IN) for a 4 pt. hit? -- and 1.6 left over in bank after this...

      Adm for Siggy now and chadli eriksen later not worth a hit, spurs play chelsea

        Had to do it now, couldn't afford Chadli not playing again and ADM was a points black hole this GW with his bad hammy...and Eriksen is more than capable of scoring v Chelsea.

    With United getting stronger with every game, anyone tempted to reach for their old comfort blanket? Van Persie looks to be regaining the form that branded him as a 'captain-every-week' player, and launched his price to 14.0m.

      I thought you would be the first to jump on an inform Rooney?

        I worry about Falcao and RVP crowding the box. LvG seems to be the type of manager that changes tactics often, and this could make Rooney's returns unpredictable as he drops deeper in some games. I wouldn't feel comfortable captaining Rooney.

      He had a terrible game followed by a half decent game. Wouldn't say that was him gaining form

      Yep. Going to have RVP, Costa and Aguero up top. It'll require a reasonably weak midfield of you, me, Doosra and George Boyd, though.

    I think I may actually go for Mirallas, should start midweek followed by a likely benching away to City, which may not be a problem at all.

    Hmmm
