Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

I would , but I also have Bony, and he did nicely for me last week. So I'll go with him again.

    Did a little digging...

Hopefully this helps someone in a similar situation to me, who might be finding themselves choosing between either Hazard or Rooney this week and just can't find the money for both...

I can't find his week by week scores from last Xmas period, but from the 6 games he played between 4th Dec '13 and Jan 1st '14, Hazard scored 4 and assisted 3... and played almost every minute (510/540mins), (couldn't find BP stats, sorry)

Rooney was suspended for one and injured for another, but in the 4 games he played he got 1 goal and 4 assists... not bad I guess, but it's the groin injury that he suffered shortly after that makes me think he might succumb to another fixture pile up in the same way...

I think that's convinced me to go Hazard over Rooney... especially with other cheaper option providing decent value with superb fixtures...

I hope Haz has it in him again... all the stars are aligning.

I think Haz is the better pick as well, simply because few other MF's have the same potential upside. Rooney is a strong pick right now, but he's "replaceable" more than Hazard is replaceable.

      Hazard got 4g, 3a, 8bp and 53 points in 7 matches

      Rooney got 1g, 4a, 6bp and 29 points in 5 matches

Your timescale conveniently misses a Rooney brace and catches a Hazard 2g, 1a haul though.

I know why you chose it, just saying the first match of the range was Hazard's haul and a week after a series of Rooney hauls.

E.g. start it a week later and it's:

            Hazard – 2g, 2a, 5bp and 36 points in 6 games
            Rooney – 1g, 4a, 6bp and 28 points in 4 games

Stats can be twisted very easily.

Well, if we go back to gather those Rooney hauls, we'll also gather 2 more Hazard hauls...

Whatcha gonna do... I'm more focused on the injury he got afterwards as the reason to avoid him...

I need to make a decision on it, and that has to be considered...

I know, of course it needs to be considered, just pointing out how arbitrary reference periods can bring wildly fluctuating results...which also needs to be considered...

Can't have em all. Downing is best in that price range and has nice fixtures coming up. Sakho not back yet, although Enner is.WH struggled to beat NEW 1-0 after Newc had to play with 10 men for 15 min this past weekend.

WBA is gonna be a tough game for WH I think.

Can I save this week lads?

    Forster (McCarthy)
    Clyne Cresswell Chambers (Moore PvA)
    Siggy Fabregas Hazard Downing Mane
    Kun Kane (Costa)

Moore, PvA and Costa out means no bench cover. Too risky this time of year. Mane has poor fixtures for a while too and will probably get rotated with Long for the odd game. If you're set on keeping Costa then swap Moore or PvA for someone like Hutton/Wisdom (only options at that price?). If not then take a -4 and get sanchez and austin if thats possible for Costa and Mane.

I prefer Austin I think. Both have penalties but QPR seem to have more of a goal threat about them. Austin has proven himself against the big teams and has some plum home fixtures to come, whereas Newcastle is Burnley's last good home game for a while (fixtures a bit tougher in general).

You should have perhaps shipped PvA before he lost another 0.1.
Apart from PvA, you don't want two Southampton defenders any more. If you save this week, consider Forster & Clyne to Guzan & Azpi for free.

    Morning, DZ. 🙂

It's true that Kun is head & shoulders above other Strikers in PL but QPR are defensively worse than Sunderland atm. How many of you rate Bony over Kun for the armband this GW?

I prefer Siggy over them both as captain.

Look where QPR conceded chances last week, top of the box, right where Siggy will be.

Lack of Sandro is brutal for QPR.

He had 3 great attempts on goal, and should have had a second assist.

Was way more involved than Bony.

Bony is my C and Kun my VC...Sunderland managed to keep Chelsea at Bay with tight defense...they can do that to City as well..and we all know about QPR's Defense (Even though I have Caulker, who I have benched this GW)

Have Siggy and captained him over Kun this week.
But you can't deny Kun, had 2 assists last week when most big guns were rather quiet and should've had the added bonus point/s if not for that foolish yellow.

Yup. I did begin with the point that he is the best in PL. It's not just about Kun vs Bony but also about their opponents' quality.

A lot of people talking about Rooney. Don't you think that with ADM out, ManU could go back to being a poor attacking force? Rooney can't do it by himself, and ADM has provided much of their spark.

I rewatched a couple games. Hull played so shitty it didnt matter who was on the pitch. They kept giving the ball away in their own half. I agree with you they will be missing his sweet delivery and pace. Mata looked lost, and Herrera played fairly well actually. No one can replace ADM but LVG might opt to start Falcao. I was also very impressed with Carrick, he can also pick out any pass he wants. Overall, I can't see Stoke causing many problems for ManU eventhough Bojan played lights out vs Liverpool. Best player on the pitch by far, and may sneak one in there tomorrow.

If the game you're playing has the same limitations with players from one team, I wouldn't waste a Chelsea or City spot on a keeper.

In isolation though, Courtois should score the highest.
