Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

Building on cogs post above, do people believe certain fixtures have patterns?
e.g high scoring derbies, one team out performing compared to vs other similar quality teams.

I tend to thing we look for patterns based on small sample sizes that aren't necessarily there.

Should the results in the last few seasons be a bigger factor than aguero form home and away, I don't think so.

By all means find another captain as Sunderland away is a difficult fixture and other captain options have an easier fixture but don't do it because you think history will continue to repeat.

Fair enough, but it did with Chelsea.
Aguero could be a nailed on captain if we look at seasons past.

There are 380 fixtures a season and only about 8-10 common score lines. They will repeat from previous years quite frequently

...for years people think Ars vs Spurs have goals in them based on two 5-2 score lines when Bale and Rvp ran the show.

Many also slapped the armband on Rooney vs hull due to his great record vs them.

Most of all it seems that a lot of people are looking at one side of the coin in that game. Sunderland are solid at home, history.. yada yada yada. I agree. But u also have to consider the other side of the coin. City in form, Aguero in great form, their performance against Southampton (better than Sunderland) and Agueros 3 goals against BM (Probably the best team in Europe). And so on, and so on.

Like u said, captain someone else if u find someone who u think will score higher, but dont do it just because of ONE fact (Sunderland are solid).

IMO, Aguero (C) is a no brainer this week.

It's difficult though. Eg look at QPR's away record. Most goals conceded away from home and QPR seems to have decided on a "gung ho" approach of feck defence we are going to outscore you. I can therefore see merit in Bony that got a double digit score vs Leic(H).

Then there is Haz and his amazing home record as an option. Not to forget about Rooney and his record vs Stoke.

        Lot's of options.

Yes there is a lot of options, as usual. I honestly think that Bony, Haz and Rooney will have a good gw. Its a matter of personal choice, and for me the odds are in Agueros favor.

This also depends on what your goal is, your overall rank. Maybe people need to take a gamble and hope Aguero blanks again and Bony scores a brace.

Anyway, I wish all good luck with that choice 🙂

I could add that City have scored more goals away from home than any other team in the league. And that Aguero have scored about 50% of their goals in the league... but thats just stuff people should know anyway 😀

There can be patterns within recent history, especially if managers/ a lot of players remain the same.

But I don't buy into these stats about bla bla "since 1979" etc.

And as you say this season's stats (and maybe last season's to an extent, if only to improve sample size) are the most important by far

So what are people's thoughts on Rooney vs Aguero this week for the armband? Both have form, Rooney is at home but Aguero has far superior stats?

Thing is with Baines, it's his high clean sheet odds that make him (c) material this week. That's in addition to his ability to assist or knock in a peno.

Anyone like these defence combos for 10.7:

    1) azpi + o'shea (sunderland have decent fixtures after next 2, and becoming more resolute per the stats)
    2) azpi + kolo toure (played well on the weekend and in the champs game he started in. Pool have decent fixtures and could turn a corner)
    3) Tomkins + Jags (nailed defenders to get me through the Xmas period, but no chelsea defence cover)
    4) anything else?

It's one to monitor Tomkins lost his place when he was injured and struggled to get back in however he played last game so I would wait and see how they set up once Reid is back.

Fair enough. I thought that just would be SA slowing bringing him back. Tomkins a d Reid started majority of the games from GW1.
Either way do you like any of those options above? Struggling to commit at the moment

If you can afford the extra .1 best to get Jenkinson who looks to be nailed

If I partner with Jags, yes I can afford him. However he sucks for Baps, so Reid may be better. Tomkins was better for Baps and saved me .1. We all know how precious those .1's are

Do you have a Swans def? I would probably look at Aspi and Naylor or Bartley if it's only short term, wouldn't be going near the Sun defence
