Andy Carroll bags a brace and assist as West Ham defeat Swansea. Diafra Sakho returns from injury to notch again, Wilfried Bony nets his seventh in nine appearances, whilst Villa’s unbeaten run stretches to five thanks to goals from defensive duo Ciaran Clark and Alan Hutton.

Carroll Breaks His Duck

Partnered by Enner Valencia up front as Sam Allardyce returned to a midfield diamond, the big target man opened his account for the campaign in emphatic fashion. Carroll was simply unplayable against the Swans and bagged two goals and an assist in the 3-1 win as Allardyce’s side triumphed for the third successive Gameweek, though with Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho also in the mix after recent injuries, the Hammers boss has considerable strength in depth to deal with the festive schedule. On this form, though, it’s difficult to see him being dislodged.

Fit-Again Sakho Back in the Goals

The Senegal striker was handed a bench role against Garry Monk’s side but, having replaced Valencia at the break in his first appearance since Gameweek 11, was amongst the goals yet again. Impressively, Sakho has now scored in seven of his eight Premier League starts, and at time when Sergio Aguero is a major doubt and Charlie Austin is suspended for the weekend, the 5.7-priced Hammers forward has to come back into the reckoning as he prepares to face Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the next five Gameweeks. Whilst rest and rotation may still blight his pitch time, yesterday’s display underlined his ability to deliver with limited minutes.

Another Assist for Downing

The Hammers midfielder emerged victorious in yesterday’s battle of the playmakers. Whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson blanked for the sixth successive road trip, Downing grabbed his sixth assist of the season to help the Hammers come from behind to clinch the points, and with the fixtures still favourable, a price of 6.1 continues to look outstanding value. Downing has now racked up a goal and three assists in his last five appearances and sits fifth in the midfield standings.

Bony Strikes Again

After stumbling at home to QPR in midweek, the Swansea frontman grabbed his seventh goal in nine Gameweeks at Upton Park yesterday. Owned by just 9% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, Bony’s excellent form brings him onto our radars as a possible short-term replacement for Aguero before he departs for international duties in next month’s African Cup of Nations. Priced at just 8.4 in FPL, he now faces Spurs, Hull, Villa, Liverpool and QPR in the next five, and whilst his lack of explosive potential (one double-figure haul this season) limits his potential as a captaincy contender, he looks one of the most reliable forwards around right now.

Villa Defenders in the Points

Paul Lambert’s side are now unbeaten in five after coming from behind to get the better of Leicester yesterday afternoon. Christian Benteke went into this one highly fancied, and whilst the Belgian managed an assist in the 2-1 triumph, it was Ciaran Clark and Alan Hutton who proved the unlikely goal heroes for Paul Lambert’s side.

Despite the loss of Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos and Nathan Baker in recent matches, Villa have now conceded just three goals in the last five Gameweeks ahead of back-to-back clashes against Man United and Swansea. With Sunderland, Palace and Leicester in the following three, though, further returns could be on the cards before the festive period is out.

Ulloa Worry for Deflated Foxes

The Argentine rolled up to Villa Park in decent Fantasy form, after serving up an assist in each of his previous two appearances. Ulloa was in the points once again for the visitors after scoring his first goal since the Gameweek 5 win over United but a first-half knock meant he was replaced at the break by David Nugent. Yesterday’s defeat means Nigel Pearson’s side have taken just two points in 10 league matches since that famous victory over the Red Devils, and with doubts over their top scorer’s availability, the Foxes could be set for further misery as they square up to City, West Ham and Tottenham next.

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
    Just sit right there
I'll tell you how My game week went up in the air

In week 13 my players all played
On Saturday n Sunday ,out in both days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
Aguero was my captin , I ain't no fool
    When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Picking on my boys in a Newcastle hood
They got in one lil fight an the ref got scared
Started waving yellow cards all around in the air

I begged and pleaded don't ruin my day
But I knew fabs suspension was comin my way
So with 3 o clock kick offs hopin to fix it
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.

I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said 'arry and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to QPAiR

I pulled up to the ground about 2.52 plus 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my team sheet
    Charlie Austin was there
But 2 yellows and a red and I was near to despare

If my captain could save me it wouldn't be bad
So I got another cab to the etihad
I got there late cause the traffic was locked
3 mins gone and he's already crocked

So I needed a Sunday like I'd never had
12 points at the mo is Jackson bad
Turning to my men sigs n fabianski
Need em big time to save it for me

What I didn't expect was a blast from the past
Andy Carroll really tore up my ass
Another red card and WC is there
5 men out, it just ain't fair

So it's my worst GW in historee
Don't think anything can save this for me
My fingers hovering over delete button
    When up pops a miracle
    And his name is Hutton

Didn't read any after the 'week 13' typo.

Only joking, good work. I have Hutton on my bench with no way of coming in. Could've saved my week but I finally cowed to Chambers getting points all the time and played him instead.

It's interesting that, in the week where the best fantasy option (Aguero) gets injured, arguably the two best fantasy players from last season (Yaya and Ramsey) are slowly showing signs of regaining their form.

Ramsey seems to be benefiting from Arsenal's playing style with Giroud back and just needs to improve his finishing to capitalise on the chances he's being afforded.

Yaya is set to troll us again - his shooting from open play is not outstanding but his penalties will keep him ticking over and offering solid point returns most weeks.

If you were to chose one, who would it be? Ramsey's superious form and threat from open play? Or do you think Yaya's fixtures are too much to ignore despite this season's inflated price tag?

I have a bad feeling about ADM. I fear he may suffer from fatigue, niggling injuries and poor form over the winter, much like Özil for Arsenal in his first season. I could be wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time it's happened to a played of ADM's physique in their first full season in England

Agree that the 4 YC is an issue but these things are never so clear cut and he could easily go until Jan without getting booked.

You could also bring in Yaya now and sell him again when the ACON comes around (on the Jan wildcard if necessary) or if he gets booked

City get more penalties when Aguero is not on the pitch, because Aguero always tries to stay on his feet instead of going down easily like so many others.

However, most of City's penalties last season came after Aguero had tired out the opposition and then been subbed.

I think the Aguero injury will be a big turning point in many mini-leagues. Who you bring in could define your mid-season up until the Jan WC.

Just love Ramsey's stats and I am happy to double up on Arsenal.

Compare Ramsey this season to Ramsey last season using the comparison tool. Select "Gameweek range" as a filter for this season and choose GW13-15 (since Giroud returned to the team)

Yaya looks essential over Christmas with Aguero out. He is the kind of bulletproof player you need in that period.

I am tempted to get him for a hit this week, but will probably wait one more week to avoid having to sell Siggy or Downing.

Not put off by his price, and 4 YCs?

I guess he looks nailed-on for those 5 if he doesn't get banned and most will miss at least one game due to rotation so it wouldn't be the end of the world.

That said, getting Ramsey instead frees up so much more money

Yaya never trolled anyone last season.

Those who were too stubborn to get him in trolled themselves.

That's not true and you know it! He basically only scored pens after Aguero had been subbed (lucky) and free kicks (which he'd previously never shown any sign of ever being good at) up until January.

I don't think it was just luck. And it's not as if he isn't a quality player, having deservedly been voted African Player of the Year three times.

As I stated in my earlier reply, City tend to get more penalties after Aguero has been subbed, because Aguero prefers to stay on his feet rather than to play for penalties.

Yaya had clearly been working on his free kick skills, and they were certainly much improved compared with previous seasons.

He was also encouraged to attack much more under Pellegrini than he had been under Mancini, a far more defensively minded manager who never allowed him to bomb forward until at least an hour had elapsed and the game was still scoreless.

Those who refused to accept that he had become a high-scoring player really only had themselves to blame, though I must admit that I did not expect it at the beginning of the season.

  5. Time to ditch Baines and Ivanovic?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it time to ditch the top priced defenders?

Baines and Ivanovic have proved poor investments for their hefty price tags in recent Gameweeks.

Ivanovic is still getting clean sheets, but so too are his other Chelsea defenders, all of which are scoring better and significantly are cheaper.

Over the last four Gamweek’s Ivanovic is the 14th best defender in terms of goal attempts in the last four. Also 14th in terms of crosses. 8th best in terms of chances created. That is not the rank of a 7m plus defender.

Plus Ivanovic has 19 FPL pts in the last four, compared to Azpilicueta’s 27. In addition Ivan has 80 BPS over that period, with Azpil getting 103.

With Baines, he has managed just 4 pts over that period – Note this is just three Gameweeks as he was injured for one of them.

In terms of BPS over those three games he has 48, while the significantly cheaper Jagielka has 54. Plus Baines's crossing and distribution is on the slide, something I put down to the greater playing time of creative midfielders such as Mirallas. Over the last four Gameweeks Jenkinson has more than doubled Baines’s crossing output. Baines has taken just four corners in the last four Gameweeks – Mirallas has taken 7 in contrast.

Is it time to ditch them and use their cash for premium midfielders?

Or with Aguero’s injury is freeing up money no longer a problem? Are managers able to afford the luxury of carrying Baines and Ivan through their current slump and use transfers elsewhere?

With all these injuries and suspensions, it should be considered a luxury to spend transfers on transferring out solid defenders like Ivanovic and Baines.

Nailed on for their respective teams in the festive period, sure to get points, no reason to get rid imo.

Reassess when you activate the January WC. Imo Azpi offers much better value than Ivanovic and that switch should be considered then.

Difficult to ditch anyone this week who isn't suspended/Aguero. I want to keep Baines for the season anyway, hopefully just a dry spell... Ivanovic I'd get rid of especially when Azpi is cheaper and eats BAPS.

With Aguero out long-term, there's certainly enough room to have at least one of them.

I'm keeping my Baines all through Xmas until at least GW21.

I think there's a case to stick with Baines, as he's on pens, FKs and corners. You never know when he could deliver a goal or assist. Given his style of play, he will likely give him bonus points too.

Can't say the same for Ivanovic.

Baines over Ivanovic any day. Having said that, I got rid of Baines in GW13 for Hutton 😎

This really is the worst possible week to ask this question. Both could score double figures. And Ivan very nearly scored and got an assist this week.

Next week, I will look at selling one to fund Yaya, but it's really not worth thinking about until then.

It's always worth thinking ahead. Plans change, but its important to consider a range of options. I asked it because Aguero's injury means big changes to our squads and for those looking to bulk up on premium midfielders further money may be needed in a week or two and Baines/Ivan look like a great way of freeing up 1m or so, while at the same time ensuring their spot is taken by a high scoring defender.

Fair enough. Ivan I can see given the fixtures, but Baines has had City and Spurs away and a blank against Hull - nothing has changed from the things that got him double figure hauls and 'essential' billing.

Except Mirallas and other Everton mids are now hogging set pieces (except penalties) and crossing. All the evidence suggest Mirallas does effect Baines's ability to score and rack up bonus, whether the opposition is weak or good.

i just disagree with the premise

With respect, the time to ditch these players has well and truly passed. I booted Baines as soon as I found out he was injured and bought Azpi.

Whereas Baines has a reliable attacking output, Ivan does not so I've not quite understand why some are obsessed with him.

As a Scout once said, "Always look for the cheapest way into a defence."

These aren't players you judge over the last four Jonty, please don't get daily mail on us and twist stats to make an article.
They are players in good defences that will match those around them but every so often get attacking returns which is what sets them apart. Clearly this won't happen every other game otherwise they'd be 10 mil a piece.

That said I think man city defenders are looking quite good for the festive season. If they don't suffer rotation i think they'll be tight for the fast flow of games.

It's not irrelevant though, I have Rooney and Clyne playing tonight so it's unlikely they'll both score well (unless Clyne gets attacking points). I will generally try and avoid having my defenders line up against my attacking players as much as possible.

That's to do with the fixture difficulty for Clyne...nothing to do with the fact you have Rooney....Whether Clyne lines up against City, United, Chelsea or Hull and Leicester determines if he get's pts...not whether you have Rooney in the same match.

No why should it? Dzeko is a massive downgrade and 0.1m should not even come in consideration.

Overall leader has a TV of 103.4m. It's points that matter.

I agree. I'm probably gonna go Bony (depending on Rooney's positioning/performance tonight) but TV does play a part in the second half of the season for sure. A lot of people often find themselves 0.1m off their desired transfer target(s).

          • 15 Years
          11 years, 11 days ago

Why? He would also have a Jan WC to play. There are massive swings in fixtures on the ticker and one can benefit even with a low TV. Many are still sitting with South assets and that inflates many TV's.

Just look at Beric(that is having a nightmare of a season due to studies etc). He never concentrates on TV and his history speaks for itself.

it depends i guess, if the budget players keep performing. i think they will drop off. others will be able to afford one more "premium player"

              • 15 Years
              11 years, 11 days ago

Yeah, but that could be a bad thing to be able to buy all the premium players. Lately it's been better NOT owning a "premium" player like Costa for example.

Obv first prize is being at the top and having money to spend, but I will trade my team for his team/rank/Lack of TV in a heartbeat at the moment.

Anybody considering actually having a front 8 for a change (rather than 7 + Boyd)? Considering this front 8 myself.

    Yaya, Haz, Cesc, Sanchez, Siggy
    Rooney, Sakho, Kane

Very flexible and will means a quality bench when the inevitable rotation/resting occurs. Also means I can rotate a few of the players who have tough games or don't score away from home (e.g. Siggy).

    GW 16: Cesc bench (suspended)
GW 17: Siggy bench (hasn't got away points since GW 1)
GW 18: Sakho bench (playing Chelsea away)
GW 19: Siggy/Kane (Anfield for Siggy, United for Kane)

Don't really like leaving so much on the bench normally and usually just have a Boyd in midfield to get the best out of the others but I think it's a decent tactic for Xmas as the bench will be used quite often!

      I'm thinking something similar.

      Yaya - Haz - Sanchez - Siggy - Downing
      Costa - Austin - Kane

I don't think Rooney is worth the money this year, and I think Costa will explode again soon. Costa being rested is fine, as there will be others who can cover it.

I can only see myself captaining Costa this week from the next 5 which is why I ain't getting him.

Yeah I prefer Hazard but he would be under consideration this week, other weeks he's not even that.

Indeed, thinking of Costa or Haz for this GW though Rooney and Sanchez are tempting.

      Gw 16: Haz/Costa (HULL); A Citeh player(leic); Baines(!)/Lukaku(QPR)
Gw 17: Austin (WBA); City player vs CPAL; Sakho/Downing/Carrol (LEIC)
      Gw 18: Sanchez( QPR); Eriksen/Kane(leic)
Gw 19: City( BURN); Austin (CPAL); Benteke(SUN)
      GW 20: Sterling( LEIC); Benteke(CPAL)

I might just give Costa a miss then.

        *GW 20: City(SUN)

To me the key is the Citeh player.

Nothing wrong having the option now.

I prefer Yaya over Costa. Yaya's value is a lot more now that Kun is out.

I'm getting Ramsey in mid. Bony/Benteke for kun

Sanchez/Haz/Roo/Austin/1 of Bony/Benteke is plenty of armband material

Rooney aint an option with those others around.

Sanchez/Haz/Austin/Benteke/City will do for me. Even Baines this week with Austin out.

Feel like its far too risky to go into the Chelsea/Hull game with only Ivanovic, Hazard - looks like Cesc will be leaving the building for Costa 🙁

Lukaku, he scored a second half hatrick at old trafford when 19, he's gunna start scoring more regularly. Belgium have good striking options excluding hazard
