Our second article of the New Year throws a trio of overlooked alternatives your way this Thursday morning. All three are poised for plum home fixtures later this afternoon that could help kick start 2015 with a bang.

AYOZE PEREZ

Papiss Cisse’s moment of madness against Everton and subsequent three-match suspension will have come as a blow to the Magpies in a week that is likely to see the Tynesiders lose manager Alan Pardew to Crystal Palace. Cisse could now be out of action for the remainder of January, depending upon Senegal’s prosperity in the African Cup of Nations, leaving Perez with the opportunity to lead the Magpies’ frontline for the foreseeable future.

A weekend strike against Everton means the youngster has notched twice in his last four appearances, and, at just 4.7 and with an ownership of 2.4% in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, could offer managers viable budget option for our three-man frontlines. Perez’s underlying stats have impressed in recent matches. Across the last four Gameweeks, the Spaniard sits fourth amongst forwards for touches in the opposition penalty area (26), superior to the likes of Robin Van Persie (24) and Charlie Austin (22), whilst his five efforts on target has been bettered by just three other strikers.

Newcastle go in search of a sixth win in seven at St James’ Park today and with visitors Burnley conceding in all but two of their last 14 league fixtures, the Magpies’ attack looks set to flourish once again later today. With Hull, Stoke and Crystal Palace in his following five, Perez certainly has the platform to garner our attention.

ADAM LALLANA

A run of six straight starts in Brendan Rodgers’ first XI has seen the former Southampton skipper slowly creep on to our radars in recent weeks. Monday night’s showing against Swansea, where Lallana bagged a brace and 15 point-haul, couldn’t be better timed ahead of a kind run of fixtures for the resurgent Reds, with a home clash against Leicester preceding back-to-back trips to struggling Sunderland and Aston Villa.

A recent tactical tweak by Rodgers has elevated the prospects of Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho, with the midfielders leading a three-man attack in the absence of a recognised striker. Since this switch, the trio’s attacking impetus has noticeably increased – all three are amongst the top 10 midfielders for shots inside the box in the last four Gameweeks.

Coming in at 8.3 in FPL, Lallana’s current ownership (1%) underlines his differential appeal when compared with the far more popular Sterling’s 31%. With the Reds full of confidence after their drubbing of the Swans on Monday, another imposing performance could be on the cards against the Foxes, allowing Lallana’s increasing influence in the final third to continue.

STEVAN JOVETIC

The Montenegrin marked his return from injury with a half-hour substitute showing against Burnley last weekend, and may well be set to start as City welcome Sunderland to the Etihad. Much depends on whether Manuel Pellegrini opts to veer away from the false nine set-up utilised in recent weeks, though given the nature of his side’s capitulation against the Clarets, a reshuffle certainly looks likely.

With David Silva and Jesus Navas producing a combined 13 key in the last two Gameweeks, the 7.8-valued Jovetic will certainly have a regular supply of chances to feed upon – City will be desperate to atone for their late slip-up and can be expected to take the match to their opponents from the first whistle. After that one, Jovetic faces Everton side that has conceded in each of their previous ten outings and, having grabbed two goals and an assist in his three previous appearances, there’s no denying that his installation in City’s XI could provide us with a welcome alternative up front.

              No hit but I'd have held Yaya for a last game effort. Also Coutinho is a real punt so good luck... I am biased however as I think Yaya(c) is what I will do.

        Many I'm sure
        I've never got on Yaya had Silva the last 3 GWs 😎
        Def not going with Silva, its setup to fail
        Maybe Austin but not really certain I do think the 4-1 Liverpool is a one-off, Swansea D will be a much tighter game that most expect, Monk will make sure of that.

        If I had to guess which fixtures will have the most goals, Id say
        LIV vs LEI
        WHM vs WBA
        which is why I'm leaning towards Sterling.

      Don't agree Rodger has promise to rest him and hasn't done so yet, that rest could come in the cup but I would fear a 2x1pt cameo.

      Has he played up top for the past 13 games though?
      Underlying stats don't lie either.. Hit the post twice in the last game and the Pool are on the up.
      The only thing preventing me from captaining him is I think he may be start on the bench!

      After -2 from my last two capt picks I dont want to take the chance.

        so should I bring him in (S. Taylor), or get another inexpensive defender? the thing is that I prefer Pieters to Cameron for a Stoke defender, tho Pieters (4.6) costs more than Cameron (4.2)

          Don't know much about Stoke defenders tbh so I won't give bad advice. Pieters has the greater goal/assist threat so if you can afford I'd go him.

                  I'm looking at Yoshida(sot) as a future contender in the WC.

                    yeah, good point

                    I think Yoshida is off to the Asian Cup, so you shouldn't bring him in now

                    the thing is, I'm planning to make one (relatively minor change) now, and then several for the next GW

                    plan is:
                    now--Bartley --> S. Taylor

                    next GW:
                    Clichy --> Pieters
                    Yaya Toure --> Downing (probably)
                    Kane --> Rooney

                    any opinions on those?

                      Nope sounds decent. Will you play Saylor this GW?

                      Cheers for the Yoshida advice.
                      Depends how Sterling/Lallana does this GW as to who I bring in for Yaya next (I have Downing). I may take a 1 week punt on Cazorla.
                      Watch Rooney's position this game... though even playing deep often drifts forward so a decent choice.

    Apologies if I'm repeating old hat, but my captain issue this week is choosing between Silva, Sanchez, Bony and Austin.

    Who am I currently with? Bony. I think he'll make a statement before he leave for afcon. Vice? Sanches; the false 9 potential is too great to pass on inspite of Silva's form.

    Foolish?

    People like to use the 1 goal in 14 matches against sterling.

    Imo its unfair judgement becos pool has been playing badly. With a slight upturn of form and sterling playing upfront those stats does not really matter. I watched the last game n i think surely he is not far from scoring his goals. U can do nuts for the last 14 games but it would not stop him from scoring a brace much like how lallana did against swans

      it was Lallana's night plain and simples
      Thats why Sterling hit the post twice, it just wasn't meant to be
      Leicester maybe Sterlings breakout or it might be Coutinhos
      or it can be looked at as the beginning of a run for Lallana

      People were probably using similar stats about Silva, RvP, hazard (away), Yaya, Cazorla etc a few weeks ago but now appear in most teams having hit the goal trail. Same will happen with Sterling soon, it is all about getting on the bandwagon at the right time. Today looks a great chance for him to go bonkers. I certainly wish I had room for him.

    Captain

    Yaya - rested & penalties
    Silva - form, but might get rested?
    Sanchez - plays up front?
    Hazard - goalfest or tight & boring derby?
    Austin - captained him last week against my own gut - but two homeblanks in a row, maybe not?

    Mourinho (12 Dec 2014): "I don't think any one player will play all six matches (between now and New Year's Day), maybe some will play five."

    Hazard, Terry, and Matic played all 5 right now (including League Cup game)

    all those three to be rested?

    Very surprised Costa is in the picks this week. His away form has been very poor, not scored in CL away either. I actually think Drog may start this one and I am contemplating selling Costa with WC looming.
