The New Year heralded in a number of injury concerns earlier today, with treatment rooms around the country opening their doors to accommodate a host of new arrivals.

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed today’s 2-0 loss at Southampton through injury, whilst Arsene Wenger has
confirmed Lukas Podolski was unavailable after sustaining a groin problem.

Aston Villa
Skipper Ron Vlaar was forced off during the first-half of today’s goalless draw against Palace with a knee injury. Post-match, Paul Lambert confirmed the Dutchman is set to be assessed prior to the weekend:

“I am not 100% sure but he’s thinking it could be the same sort of thing that he hurt in the World Cup. It’s his knee. We will probably know more tomorrow. He will go for a scan. Hopefully it’s not too bad. He thinks it might be similar to the one he had in Brazil. We will have to wait and see.”

Burnley
Sean Dyche is counting the cost of today’s comeback draw at Newcastle, after Jason Shackell (calf), Dean Marney (illness) and Kevin Long ((ankle) were forced off. The Burnley boss is sweating over the latter’s availability, with the debutant stretchered off in the 3-3 stalemate:

“Kevin is the big question mark. It needs to settle and the medical team will get on that over the next couple of days. We are hopeful Shacks is not as bad as we maybe first thought and Dean is just sickness. He was almost vomiting before the game and it is a strange one. ”

Everton
Kevin Mirallas started on the left of a front three away to Hull but was withdrawn at the break, with Roberto Martinez confirming:

“Kevin was feeling a little bit sore at half-time and we needed everyone to be 100% in order to be dynamic.””

Hull
Andrew Robertson is set for x-rays on his ankle and foot after a challenge from Everton’s Mo Besic forced him off on 23 minutes today. Liam Rosenior was withdrawn before the hour mark due to a hamstring problem, whilst Gaston Ramirez was subbed off at the break as a result of his ongoing groin complaint.

Leicester
Danny Drinkwater was replaced by David Nugent on 36 minutes after picking up an injury during the 2-2 draw at Liverpool.

Liverpool
Adam Lallana’s recent run of form was halted earlier today due to injury. The Reds midfielder was subbed off early in the second period, with Brendan Rodgers confirming post-match:

“He’s got a tweak in his thigh, so we’ll see how that is.”

Mario Balotelli missed out altogether after sustaining an injury in training.

Man United
Ashley Young could be set for a period on the sidelines, according to Louis van Gaal, after he was forced off during today’s draw at Stoke.

“He has a hamstring injury. He’s out for many weeks, I think. But I’m not a doctor so we have to wait for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”

Newcastle
The Magpies look poised to be without Steven Taylor for the remainder of the season. Caretaker boss John Carver confirmed the worst after the centre-half was taken off during today’s draw with Burnley:

“Unfortunately there’s bad news with Steven. It looks like he’s snapped his Achilles tendon – the other one (to which he injured against Chelsea in December 2011). It’s a fresh injury and I’m so disappointed for him because he got off to a great start. He’s a good character and he’ll deal with it. We’ll make sure he’s looked after and everything will be done properly.”

Southampton
The Saints’ in-form wide man Sadio Mane was withdrawn after scoring his third goal in as many matches in today’s win over Arsenal. After the 2-0 triumph, Ronald Koeman is uncertain whether Mane – who is soon set to fly to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal – will be available for the weekend FA Cup clash with Ipswich:

“I have to wait until Friday, I don’t know what happened exactly, we will know more then if he is available for Sunday or not.”

Sunderland
Santiago Vergini was withdrawn on 77 minutes after picking up a knock in the Black Cats’ narrow loss at City. Lee Cattermole failed to make the Etihad trip due to a groin problem, Gus Poyet has confirmed.

Tottenham
Erik Lamela missed today’s stunning win over Chelsea with a minor calf complaint, whilst Ryan Mason limped off with a hamstring injury in the first period.

West Brom
Craig Gardner missed the Baggies 1-1 draw at West Ham with a calf problem, whilst fellow midfielder Graham Dorrans was subbed off through injury late on.

West Ham
The Hammers have concerns over today’s scorer Diafra Sakho, who was forced off with a recurrence of a back problem. The Senegal striker will be hoping to recover in time to fly off on international duties in the African Cup of Nations next week.

“We have to have a scan on it and see what condition his back is in. Obviously it’s a similar situation to when he last came back from [international duty with] Senegal, so on Friday the lads will send him for a scan and we’ll see how it goes from there”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This lot wildcard worthy? Surely not, right?

    Fabianski / Panti
    Baines / Azpi / Zaba / Vlaar / Wisdom
    Hazard / Sanchez / Silva / Siggy / Downing
    Rooney / Austin / Kane

    1FT / 0.6ITB

Only reason would be to sort out my defence really. Who should be priority, Baines or Vlaar?

Fighting the urge to go Austin to Kane. Despite Kane's massive haul Austin's stats are much better, 6 shots in the box versus 1 for Kane. Just worried about not having the latest bandwagon.

Anyone else wrestling with the same problem?

Take into consideration who QPR played and who Spurs played when analyzing the stats.

Yeah for sure, it's just that Kane's finishing was basically 100% so it feels like a blip rather than a sign of things to come.

That I am not so sure of...he seems a burgeoning star to me. However, his first goal was the type of finish he has not been producing really with any regularity to date. So we'll see.

Yeah, that is not obvious. Another striker you could take out instead? Most of us have one weak link at least (Carroll for me - not sure what I was thinking).

Rooney and Costa my other 2, Rooney could go but the fixtures are good and he's done ok since I had him. Costa's been ticking along nicely too recently.

That will probably be Kane's biggest haul this season easily. Hard to say since I've owned him for 5 weeks now and benched him last night

I would still be cautious. I am not sure he can handle 90 minutes on a consistent basis. And by the time we find out Yaya will likely be back already! He could always go Fernando and Fernandinho.

    1. ILOVEBAPS

No. I'd take a punt on Caz occasionally but Sanchez is a season keeper for me as long as he is fit.

        11 years, 4 months ago

Fair enough. What I've seen though, Cazorla gets into some insane positions as he doesn't track back as much. And he's on pens.

          • 12 Years

Arteta and Giroud should be ahead of him in the pecking order theoretically though if either are on the pitch. Caz has looked great though he is in a great run of form.

Agree, double up when the fixtures are good. Unless of course you have some ground to make up in your ML, could be a good calculated risk.

    2. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 4 months ago

Not really. At this point I have too much value tied up in Alexis since I bought him at 10.4 to consider getting rid unless he got an injury. He is too expensive to re-buy and try and yo-yo him in and out of my team based on his current form. I have accepted that he will ebb and flow with form but he is such a class player I am prepared to ride it out with him. He is capable of a brace on any given gameweek which is saying a lot coming from a midfielder. Not too many in the game like him.

      1. Wouter
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 4 months ago

That would also be one of my reasons to not sell Alexis. A new Tom Cruise movie would have to be dedicated to getting him back in. But with Santi you have quite a bit of extra money to play with.

          • 12 Years
          11 years, 4 months ago

That is true...but as mentioned above I would rather double if they had a good run and let Cazorla come in and out than ship Alexis 🙂

Fine with it. Benteke has absolutely killed me since bringing him in. He looked good for a spell there but I underestimated how utterly crap Villa are surrounding him in their quality going forward.

They should be because they have no quality depth behind him. Imagine if he was hurt and they had to go with Soldado up top...disastrous. Ade seems to be out again..they really do need a striker or two in the window. Just not one to replace Kane 😀

Sickened I benched him.. I'd be 2k instead of 4k.
And it'll probably lead to an erratic captain choice next week to make up for it

I probably will as I am likely to continue with a 3-5-2 and he would be a nice placeholder for Yaya until he returns with the trophy.

Maybe. Honestly their away form is so shocking at this point I am very tentative towards getting any of their attackers full stop. I had him pegged for my wildcard group but now I am not so sure. Hope to gain some good information over the next couple games but staying well away for now.

If he plays against southampton this weekend and looks promising I'll bring him in. Wouldn't be surprised if LVG stuck him back in the hole, if he does i'll bring him in straight away.

What do you all think of Austin? Very tempted to bench or ship to another forward like Ings or Jovetic.

He's on borrowed time, but that was always the plan. Think I will just give him a run until I wildcard in which time he will be given his pink slip.

Not recently. As the schedule goes nearer, there will be due to fixture congestion. Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs IMO have the best chance of one given how many fixtures are piling up for them (COC semi, FA Cup, CL/EL)

Only one FT. Should I VC? I am an Aguero guy, so I am getting him in the moment he is back, even if it's a -8 (well, not really).

    Guzan / Alnwick
    Terry / Naylor / Vergini / Hutton / Bruce
    Silva / Sanchez / Hazard / Milner / Boydinho
    Costa / Austin / Rooney

I am thinking of doing a -4, which includes Rooney to Kane. Already 1.6 iTB and that saves around 5.0 which allows me to upgrade Milner to anyone I want (me thinks Sterling).

Ughhh, still smarting from benching Kane.

Have nobody but myself to blame - lad was in great form and I was swayed to bench him due to amongst other things his price tag.

    I'm probably not alone

Seems a high % of Kane owners benched him at home yesterday. I had no idea so many had a power 5 midfield. Isn't it FPL 101 to have 7 good attackers and 1 bench fodder(Boyd)?

      • 13 Years

Actually, Kane and Austin along with Costa/Rooney leaves alot of money which you can use to upgrade that Boyd to a Sigurdsson/Silva/Yaya (Depending on how much you invest in defence)
