The New Year heralded in a number of injury concerns earlier today, with treatment rooms around the country opening their doors to accommodate a host of new arrivals.

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed today’s 2-0 loss at Southampton through injury, whilst Arsene Wenger has
confirmed Lukas Podolski was unavailable after sustaining a groin problem.

Aston Villa
Skipper Ron Vlaar was forced off during the first-half of today’s goalless draw against Palace with a knee injury. Post-match, Paul Lambert confirmed the Dutchman is set to be assessed prior to the weekend:

“I am not 100% sure but he’s thinking it could be the same sort of thing that he hurt in the World Cup. It’s his knee. We will probably know more tomorrow. He will go for a scan. Hopefully it’s not too bad. He thinks it might be similar to the one he had in Brazil. We will have to wait and see.â€

Burnley
Sean Dyche is counting the cost of today’s comeback draw at Newcastle, after Jason Shackell (calf), Dean Marney (illness) and Kevin Long ((ankle) were forced off. The Burnley boss is sweating over the latter’s availability, with the debutant stretchered off in the 3-3 stalemate:

“Kevin is the big question mark. It needs to settle and the medical team will get on that over the next couple of days. We are hopeful Shacks is not as bad as we maybe first thought and Dean is just sickness. He was almost vomiting before the game and it is a strange one. â€

Everton
Kevin Mirallas started on the left of a front three away to Hull but was withdrawn at the break, with Roberto Martinez confirming:

“Kevin was feeling a little bit sore at half-time and we needed everyone to be 100% in order to be dynamic.”â€

Hull
Andrew Robertson is set for x-rays on his ankle and foot after a challenge from Everton’s Mo Besic forced him off on 23 minutes today. Liam Rosenior was withdrawn before the hour mark due to a hamstring problem, whilst Gaston Ramirez was subbed off at the break as a result of his ongoing groin complaint.

Leicester
Danny Drinkwater was replaced by David Nugent on 36 minutes after picking up an injury during the 2-2 draw at Liverpool.

Liverpool
Adam Lallana’s recent run of form was halted earlier today due to injury. The Reds midfielder was subbed off early in the second period, with Brendan Rodgers confirming post-match:

“He’s got a tweak in his thigh, so we’ll see how that is.â€

Mario Balotelli missed out altogether after sustaining an injury in training.

Man United
Ashley Young could be set for a period on the sidelines, according to Louis van Gaal, after he was forced off during today’s draw at Stoke.

“He has a hamstring injury. He’s out for many weeks, I think. But I’m not a doctor so we have to wait for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.â€

Newcastle
The Magpies look poised to be without Steven Taylor for the remainder of the season. Caretaker boss John Carver confirmed the worst after the centre-half was taken off during today’s draw with Burnley:

“Unfortunately there’s bad news with Steven. It looks like he’s snapped his Achilles tendon – the other one (to which he injured against Chelsea in December 2011). It’s a fresh injury and I’m so disappointed for him because he got off to a great start. He’s a good character and he’ll deal with it. We’ll make sure he’s looked after and everything will be done properly.â€

Southampton
The Saints’ in-form wide man Sadio Mane was withdrawn after scoring his third goal in as many matches in today’s win over Arsenal. After the 2-0 triumph, Ronald Koeman is uncertain whether Mane – who is soon set to fly to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal – will be available for the weekend FA Cup clash with Ipswich:

“I have to wait until Friday, I don’t know what happened exactly, we will know more then if he is available for Sunday or not.â€

Sunderland
Santiago Vergini was withdrawn on 77 minutes after picking up a knock in the Black Cats’ narrow loss at City. Lee Cattermole failed to make the Etihad trip due to a groin problem, Gus Poyet has confirmed.

Tottenham
Erik Lamela missed today’s stunning win over Chelsea with a minor calf complaint, whilst Ryan Mason limped off with a hamstring injury in the first period.

West Brom
Craig Gardner missed the Baggies 1-1 draw at West Ham with a calf problem, whilst fellow midfielder Graham Dorrans was subbed off through injury late on.

West Ham
The Hammers have concerns over today’s scorer Diafra Sakho, who was forced off with a recurrence of a back problem. The Senegal striker will be hoping to recover in time to fly off on international duties in the African Cup of Nations next week.

“We have to have a scan on it and see what condition his back is in. Obviously it’s a similar situation to when he last came back from [international duty with] Senegal, so on Friday the lads will send him for a scan and we’ll see how it goes from thereâ€

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    @tina - planned WC is after GW22. Seems the best time given fixture changes, longer period and near the end of the actual window.

    Probably have a MUN attacker and defender, just not sure which yet

    I see a lot if advice that yaya to Chadli is a better move than yaya to Silva. I don't own yaya but the same rationale would mean that Silva to Chadli was a good use of a free transfer if no pressing issues. Is Silva to Chadli a decent move this week?

    1. Rhinos
      • 12 Years

      not the same at all. Yaya not available for weeks, wouldnt drop city attackers vs the hapless Everton

        It is the same actually, in the short term anyway. People are saying that Chadli is likely to score more than silva over the next few weeks. If I have a ft up my sleeve then it should also be the better option to make the transfer.

        But I agree that it doesn't feel right

      Not IMO.

      Look at the next 2 games. City have two games against defences who are playing terribly, and with managers who refuse to park the bus - Arsenal and Everton.

      They are exactly the teams City could steamroll.

        Note: I watched the whole Southampton arsenal match and Arsenal's defensive performance was pretty much on a par with the sunderland 8-0

        I'm not even joking. They gifted Saints chance after chance but they were not clinical at all.

      Worse transfers have been made. Chadli has consistently scored big this season when playing and Spurs have 3 good fixtures coming up while city have 3 Everton arsenal and Chelsea.

      As a silva Yaya eriksen owner, I don't plan on doing silva to chadli. Not worth the ft and silva can score against what has been a poor Everton side

          It's a close one. I'm not going to doubt chadli's potential anymore. Go with your gut. A lot of people will bring chadli in this week

      Sideways at best.

      Yaya to Chadli is obvious since Yaya is off for few weeks, Silva isnt.

      Yaya off also means more positive to Silva as he can roam forward more and become more of a threat.

      I would hold on Silva if i have him. One of the better prospecr in Jan imk

      Nope it's not the same. Yaya won't be scoring any points in the future as he's away so you can expect 0 points from him. Say that you expect Chadli to score 20 points in the next 4 or something, then the Yaya->Chadli transfer gives you 20 pts more (or 16 if considering that FT's basically are worth the same as hits, that's another discussion though). You also expect Silva to score, say 18 over this time, Silva to Chadli will only net you 2 points. Yaya to Chadli is still better than Yaya to Silva, but Silva to Chadli is a bit unnecessary.
      I would hold Silva and maybe get Chadli in another way if possible.

    Right, so a lot of folk seem to be suggesting Fabregas for Yaya, even when the person asking already has three Chelsea. So if someone already has a Great Triumvirate (Costa/Haz/Ivan (or Terry)), who are we thinking would be the best replacement for Yaya? Fab in, Ivan/Terry out? Sanchez? Or might it be worth getting in a Chadli type, with a neat 6.0 in the bank for when Aguero comes back?

      i think i'd still have downers ahead of him. i'm one of those who'd only put the attacking sub behind a defender in an unusual circumstance. in this case i'd fancy downing ahead of chambers. arsenal defence has been dodgy as far as i'm aware

        I started Boyd this week. But asking him to score in 3 matches on the trot is a little too much methinks.

    Benteke to Kane? No real pressing needs, just not sure if that'd be chasing the points too heavily. Villa is just the worst though

    Is it important to have someone from Arsenal's attack?

    Tried to warn a few about Benteke. Not been a good player for a long time imo

      Giving him a couple more chances. He's been very close in recent matches.

      If you can keep your head when all about you
      Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
      If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
      But make allowance for their doubting too;
      If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
      Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
      Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
      And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

      If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
      If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
      If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
      And treat those two impostors just the same;
      If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
      Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
      Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
      And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

      If you can make one heap of all your winnings
      And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
      And lose, and start again at your beginnings
      And never breathe a word about your loss;
      If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
      To serve your turn long after they are gone,
      And so hold on when there is nothing in you
      Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

      If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
      Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
      If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
      If all men count with you, but none too much;
      If you can fill the unforgiving minute
      With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
      Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
      And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
