We take a look back at yesterday’s eventful New Year’s Day fixtures, where Tottenham’s young striker, Burnley’s budget wide man, the Saints’ thriving form and the end of Man City’s false nine system are all on our agenda.

There’s little reason to resist Kane’s ascendency…
For many Fantasy managers, benching the Spurs frontman for yesterday’s home clash with Chelsea was an understandable decision. Mauricio Pochettino’s side had, after all, failed to score in two of their previous three at the Lane, whilst Chelsea rolled up to north London on the back of six clean sheets in their previous eight. With Christian Eriksen failing to earn returns in the 5-3 victory, Kane’s two goals and pair of assists cemented his place as the must-have Tottenham attacker, and with winter wildcard season now open, the bandwagon has already reached full pace as he quickly becomes part of the template.

Strong benches can be more of a curse than a blessing…
The fallout from Sergio Aguero’s injury left many Fantasy managers with plenty of cash to spare over the Christmas period. As a result, our festive 15-man squads have been stronger than ever as we looked to assured starters over the hectic schedule but, whilst this tactic can prove beneficial when Premier League managers rotate, yesterday it bit hard. Those who started Stewart Downing or Gylfi Sigurdsson over Kane were left ruing their decision, as the former pair drew blanks against West Brom and QPR to serve a reminder that sometimes, for all our planning and preparation, stocking up with an embarrassment of riches can go against us.

Boyd is just not for Christmas…
Burnley’s summer signing from Hull highlighted just why he’s been our favoured budget midfielder this season by notching for the third time since the start of December. Boyd and his Clarets team-mates now have some fine fixtures (QPR, CPL, sun, WBA) to fire themselves out of trouble, and with their confidence on the rise, investment could well pay off here. Typically a cheap option to call upon when our premium big-hitters are unavailable, Boyd is staking a real claim for a place in our XIs over that upcoming schedule.

Silva needs the strikers to stay sidelined…
A home clash against Sunderland saw City’s playmaker top our Captain Poll by some distance. Silva had racked up four goals and an assist in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system – with James Milner leading the line in the previous three matches, the little Spaniard found space to wreak havoc in the opposition box, but with fit-again Stevan Jovetic back against the Black Cats, Silva served up a surprise blank in the 3-2 victory. As we mentioned earlier, the City boss expects Edin Dzeko to return next week, whilst Sergio Aguero is on course to come back in a fortnight – with their attacking options increasing once again, then, it remains to be seen whether Silva can sparkle quite so brightly.

The Saints have weathered the storm…
You have to give credit to Ronald Koeman. After earning a single point in five Gameweeks, Southampton looked like sitting ducks ahead of a schedule which saw Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal roll up to St Mary’s from mid-December onwards. Instead, the Saints silenced the doubters in emphatic fashion – earning seven points from those fixtures, they scored six times and conceded just a single goal to cement a top-four spot and suggest they have the quality to prevail, regardless of fixture schedule. Whilst Graziano Pelle continues to toil up top, many Fantasy managers are set to revisit the Saints defence in light of their recent resilience.

Johnson is key to the Black Cats’ Survival…
Whilst Costel Pantilimon’s heroics between the sticks continues to pay off for Fantasy managers, Gus Poyet needs more from his attackers if Sunderland are to ensure their top-flight survival. Given that Steven Fletcher has failed to score since Gameweek 10 and Connor Wickham has netted once since Gameweek 7, Johnson’s upturn in form couldn’t have come at a better time – with three goals and an assist in his last five, he’s played a part in four of the Wearsiders’ previous five strikes and looks set to have a real say in his side’s battle to beat the drop.

Villa need more bite from Benteke…
We’d hoped his stunning strike against United in Gameweek 17 was a sign of things to come but, unfortunately for Villa and Fantasy managers alike, it seems more like a false dawn. Paul Lambert’s side have scored just once in their last five now and, having failed to take advantage of back-to-back home clashes against Sunderland and Palace, look toothless in attack. The big Belgian may be back on board but with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in the next four, he needs to step up significantly if the midlands side are to remain clear of the relegation pack.

The Africa Cup of Nations will hit Leicester hard…
The imminent departure of Riyad Mahrez couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Foxes. Set to ply his trade for Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations, Mahrez has been instrumental in his side’s attacking forays in recent weeks – with a goal and three assists in the last six, he’s played a part in four of the Foxes’ five goals from Gameweek 15 onwards and is finding top form ahead of three crucial home encounters (AVL, STO, CPL) in the next four. Jeffrey Schlupp’s third strike of the season means that only Leonardo Ulloa has scored more for the Championship winners, but with international commitments for Ghana this month, he too is out of the picture, leaving Nigel Pearson a real headache ahead of those key showdowns.

Coutinho is thriving in Rodgers’ new system…
Let’s face it, the word “consistent” has never been the most apt adjective for Liverpool’s little Brazilian. In the past, Coutinho has been one of those players whose underlying stats suggest he should be worthy of our consideration, yet a lack of end product has meant he’s always left on the shelf when it comes to selecting the Reds’ midfielders. A recent move to 3-4-3 seems to have finally solved Brendan Rodgers’ problem, though – Coutinho’s assist against Leicester means he’s now supplied attacking returns in each of the last four Gameweeks and has earned 30 Fantasy Premier League points in five matches since the switch of tactics, compared to 26 points over the first 15 rounds of fixtures.

As a supporter of a non Premier League side I simply can't understand why so many fans seem to dislike and ridicule Gerrard. He's stayed at one club for his whole career, has represented England for many years and has always handled himself very admirably. Gerrard is a dying breed in this age of billionaire owners and players switching sides at the drop of a hat. Liverpool, whilst undoubtedly a big club, have only had genuinely good sides on two or three occasions whilst he's been there. At his peak he could have gone anywhere and won anything, and yet he stayed loyal.

Some have taken to simply mocking him for that infamous slip. I find that sad given how great a career he has had. As I said before I'm not a Liverpool fan, but I would've been far happier seeing someone like Gerrard win the league than some mercenary. Others mention the Chelsea flirtation. I'm sure he had his head turned but in the end, he stayed, so I don't see how that detracts from his legacy too much.

One of the very, very best in Premier League history. I for one will be sad to see him go.

(None of this applies to Man United or Everton fans who, I accept, have justifiable reasons for their dislike!)

Agree completely. Seems hard to actually illicit a serious response from many football fans these days. So many people I've spoken with today just seem content to spout meme's and rubbish 'slip' jokes about Gerrard.

Maybe my work colleagues and mates are just immature though!

I almost wrote a long story on this.... Completely agree.
In my country we have a strong tradition of left inspired politics without being full blown communists. These days it is gone, the last decade the left wing moved to the centre and the right wing divided intogoing to the centre for the most part and then those nutjobs that went extreme to the right.
Ideology is dead for the majority of the ppl unless you are an extremist.

A shame for him that he couldn't quite capture that elusive Premier League. I've always felt he's a bit overrated (a bit too 'Roy of the Rovers' for my liking, looking back I think Lampard is the better player), but no one can take away the fact that he was instrumental in winning the CL. For that, he'll always be a Liverpool legend, and like you say, to remain a one-club man in the modern game is very admirable.

            That first question is ridiculous.

There isn't really an answer to it. You have a feel for players. Sometimes it changes.

Still early days for Kane to prove he can be an established PL striker.

What's happened is that he has made the step from level to level seamlessly. Plus he fits the Spurs setup perfectly and has guys like Eriksen and Chadli to provide the bullets. He seems not to excel in any one area but does everything very tidily. Also scoring a variety of goals with head and feet, works really hard chasing back, can take free kicks, wins free kicks etc etc.

It feels like a bad move only because he's so cheap...In my case, I played this game correctly, made early transfers, got the money to be able to afford the best players (that are usually the most expensive ones) only for players like Kane and Austin to come in and offer easy points for players with 99m worth teams...sucks to see that.

People thinking Kane is still a budget option need to wake up slightly. If he had a 8.0m+ price tag he'd be unbenchable. I don't own him (will do soon) but he's not one people should use with the word rotate..16 goals already all comps!

Having scored mighty one goal against the likes of Leicester and Burnley, playing against a team that had kept 6 CS in last 8, I would have also benched Bony. Or Sanchez. Anybody except Aguero.

          The price is irrelevant.

And Kane is budget. Now he is unbenchable, but he still is fecking cheap, which is why everybody has him. If he cost you 12.0, not half as many would get him.

    Courtois, Hamer
Baines (yuck), Zabaleta, Wisdom, Dummett, Moore (yuck)
    Sterling, Silva, Sanchez, Hazard, Boyd
    Costa, Austin, Kane

Any help much appreciated. Planning on WCing quite late as team is decent atm, just need to sort the defence

It may be there are not many goals in that team when Bony is away. I prefer West Ham as a better attacking team, and their attacks seem to go by Downing. He's a season keeper for me.

For the fantasy managers, for sure. And for the CPL clan sheet row Delaney had a lot of fans too. Truth is, they are quite mediocre players. Maybe still shouldn't be amongst the absolutely worst of the league.

My favourite from the article was Matt Phillips.

Got two FTs and 3.2 ITB. Need rid of YaYa and Zabs. Benteke is out after next GW.

    Fabi (Bego)
    N. Taylor Hutton Zab (Baines Yun)
    Hazard Erikson Yaya Sterling (Fer)
    Benteke Ayoze Kane

Any advice on which Man Utd player to get in? Falcao, Rooney + Di Maria all good options.
Main issue is which defender to draft in?

Also think Jovetic has to be a good shout even with Dzeko returning.

Playing wildcard in two weeks when Kun is back.

Jovetic and Di Maria in? LVG expects the FA cup clash with Yeovil to be too soon but says he will train. I expect Mata gets the FA cup nod and is benched against Southampton. Either that or gamble on Silva/Navas/Milner and then make the impossible decission between Falcao, Rooney and RVP given the dutchman netted a brace in the reverse fixture and is due... as is Sanchez... Also worried Dzeko will return and steal Jovi's thunder. Its a tricky GW this one. Dare I say Giroud?...

Who instead of Silva though? I wanted to jump on Yaya but he's off.
      Already have Hazard / Sanchez.
Just don't like doubling up on a single team midfield, to get Fab in.

You could move to a far cheaper player, but with Kane / Austen etc knocking about, we already have a load of money and nobody to spend it on.

I've been having similar thoughts also.

              Was thinking 3-5-2:

              Heaton (Hamer)
              Hutton / Clichy / Cahill / Clyne / Wisdom
              Sanchez / ADM / Fab / Haz / Siggy
              Kun / Kane (Barnes)

Price / injury updates yes, but, but that's easy to supply - you can even find that information out yourself.

It's the % rise / fall data that helps you plan your transfers - especially around WC time.

FISO is fairly reliable I think, but they don't provide some of the useful column data that Total does / did.

I would say Rooney over adm at the moment.

Rooney nailed and still capable of big hauls as seen on Boxing Day. And if RVP gets taken off early he will hit pens
