Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea’s home encounter with managerless Newcastle makes Eden Hazard the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll. The Belgian’s outstanding festive form has seen him rise to the top of the midfield standings, and having scored in five of his last six at the Bridge – serving up four sets of double-figure hauls in the process – he’s earned 43% of the votes cast.

Hazard’s team-mate Diego Costa has been selected by 15% of voters. The summer signing has also scored in all but one of his last six but has delivered only one 10+ points return since Gameweek 4.

Harry Kane’s rise to Fantasy prominence is underlined by his spot in third position. After serving up an 18-point haul at home to Chelsea on New Year’s Day, just under 11% are looking to hand the Tottenham frontman the armband as he heads to Palace.

Alexis Sanchez is backed by 6% as Arsenal prepare for the visit of Stoke. With Olivier Giroud back in contention, however, the Chilean may be set for a role on the flank once again, though his last six scores at the Emirates (13, 16, 2, 9, 9, 10) underlines his potential, with only United keeping him at bay.

Raheem Sterling’s role in the centre of Liverpool’s new 3-4-3 formation has convinced 4% to back him for the trip to Sunderland. A goal and assist in his last three is hardly prolific, though the Black Cats’ run of a single clean sheet in their last seven at the Stadium of Light, compared to four shut-outs in five on the road, suggests they are more liable to concede when going on the offensive in front of their own fans.

Promoted pair Danny Ings and Charlie Austin have persuaded around 3% of Fantasy managers to select them as captain as the duo go head-to-head at Turf Moor. In spite of the R’s toils away from home, Austin has scored at the likes of Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal and bagged a goal and assist against the Clarets in the 2-0 win at Loftus Road last month. With a single strike in seven, the goals have dried up for Ings of late, though the R’s dire form on the road offers reason for optimism here.

so do we reckon Aguero will be eased back in slowly or will he start the Arsenal game?

I have a feeling he'll be eased a bit. I could see him not starting until the Chelsea match.

its a week away so might start. Can't expect more than 62 mins though.

What you can expect is a 0.3m price rise if he even gets on the pitch this weekend.

Good point. Any ideas how log he'll be price protected for, if at all?

Might wait for after arsenal (I can live musing one or 2 goals) if the price will stick enough.

Not sure how the price protection works but it should prevent any immediate rise, also WC transfers in apparently don't affect price rises.

Valdez to United?! A position they're already strong in? Could we be seeing the beginning of De Gea to Real Madrid and Bale to United!!?

There's no harm in being really strong in every position. Can never see RM selling Bale. One would think that RM will come knocking for DDG soon.

Wow. This was exactly what I was thinking about doing.

Would have been for a hit and then RVP out for Aguero (now he's fit) immediately so not worth it for me.

BUT if you have other ageuro type plans then I'd go for it. But of a differential too.

      In conclusion.
Not for hit, unless it's for at least 3 games

2 FTs, £0.4m in the bank. Thinking Baines to Terry and save the other FT. Or should I just use the second FT as well in case I wildcard on Saturday? Team is:

      Pantilimon,
      Baines, Zabaleta, Wisdom,
      Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Boyd,
      Costa, Rooney, Austin.

Subs: Krul, Downing, N. Taylor, Hutton.

What do you think? Cheers. 🙂

Gerrard ain't no Paul Scholes , not a patch on the player , career, club and dynasty, in 50 years time , people will remember Scholes and United , Gerrard might get a few replays of his FA cup goals v West Ham or that lucky night in Istanbul

That's precisely my point , his career never kicked on from 2006 , should have become a legend, instead you will see replays of those FA cup goals or Olimpiakos screamer ,

Spurs do have decent fixtures, so he could be an option. Bringing in a WBA player could be an alternative as Pulis will try and get the defence strong as his first priority.

I think it looks very good.

I'd be tempted to downgrade Pantilimon to Krul or Myhill and upgrade Trippier to Alderweireld myself, that would give a safer defensive rotation.

I'm not sure about the Spurs double, maybe Tadic for Eriksen?

Berahino may be the best to rotate with Kane (I assume you play 3-5-2) but Ayoze is also worth a look, Newcastle rotate well with Spurs from an attacking perspective.

This City/Lampard nonsense just gets dodgier and dodgier. No surprise considering the owners.

Didn't he just sign a contract with Man City and pretend it was a loan from NYCFC to save his reputation towards Chelsea fans and do not cause so much upset?

                  Thoughts?

                  Guzan - Forster

                  Azpil - Clichy - Hutton - Wisdom - Davies

                  Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Silva - Boyd

                  Austin - Kane - Costa

                  2 frees.

                  Davies > Bertrand?
                  Forster > Panti?

Clichy and Azp? I couldn't take the worry so switched Azp to Vlaar - 🙁 So now I at least know he won't start!!!

Anyone know more than the crystal ball whether Clichy will start?

What GK pairing are you lot going for on your January WC?

I'm most tempted by Panti / Foster atm

I personally tend to go with just one starting keeper and pick the cheapest dirtbag who doesn't play as his backup, since we are forced to pick two. I find it's much easier that way on the brain. No wasted time and effort trying to figure out who to play and such. Plus, it saves me some money to be used elsewhere. Every little bit of cash helps in the long run.

Don't you really need to consider your GK pair in tandem with your defence. On their own it's not that meaningful.

Is the defence too light? On WC this week

                  Foster/Myhill
                  Cahill Bert PVA (Wisdom/Bruce)
                  Hazard Sanchez ADM Sterling (Boyd)
                  Kun Costa Kane

I could get Chadli in for Sterling but I've been trolled with Spurs players this season, not sure I want a double Spurs. I want to keep Costa too..thoughts fellas would be a great help

That there is my team except I have Debuchy in place for Clyne and Wasilewski for Naylor

Aresnal much better fixtures than Saints for now
Wasilewski covers Arsenal Chelsea tough away fixtures well

I agree that arsenal fixtures better than Saints but gooners clean sheets are few and far between. Actually thinking of doubling up on Saints defenders tbh
