Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea’s home encounter with managerless Newcastle makes Eden Hazard the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll. The Belgian’s outstanding festive form has seen him rise to the top of the midfield standings, and having scored in five of his last six at the Bridge – serving up four sets of double-figure hauls in the process – he’s earned 43% of the votes cast.

Hazard’s team-mate Diego Costa has been selected by 15% of voters. The summer signing has also scored in all but one of his last six but has delivered only one 10+ points return since Gameweek 4.

Harry Kane’s rise to Fantasy prominence is underlined by his spot in third position. After serving up an 18-point haul at home to Chelsea on New Year’s Day, just under 11% are looking to hand the Tottenham frontman the armband as he heads to Palace.

Alexis Sanchez is backed by 6% as Arsenal prepare for the visit of Stoke. With Olivier Giroud back in contention, however, the Chilean may be set for a role on the flank once again, though his last six scores at the Emirates (13, 16, 2, 9, 9, 10) underlines his potential, with only United keeping him at bay.

Raheem Sterling’s role in the centre of Liverpool’s new 3-4-3 formation has convinced 4% to back him for the trip to Sunderland. A goal and assist in his last three is hardly prolific, though the Black Cats’ run of a single clean sheet in their last seven at the Stadium of Light, compared to four shut-outs in five on the road, suggests they are more liable to concede when going on the offensive in front of their own fans.

Promoted pair Danny Ings and Charlie Austin have persuaded around 3% of Fantasy managers to select them as captain as the duo go head-to-head at Turf Moor. In spite of the R’s toils away from home, Austin has scored at the likes of Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal and bagged a goal and assist against the Clarets in the 2-0 win at Loftus Road last month. With a single strike in seven, the goals have dried up for Ings of late, though the R’s dire form on the road offers reason for optimism here.

Some doubt around him keeping his place with Whelan posing a threat in centre mid and Bardsley at right back, and Stoke haven't been great. They have good games coming up if he keeps his place with those two back.

Costs less than Hutton who is owned by more than 13%, maybe a differrential?? 😉

Game weeks 22-26 kind enough for him to return and find form and establish a place in a manager less Newcastle - SOU, hul, STK, cry

Yeah I agree. Going to add him to my watch list definitely. Also Read that he played 60 mins behind closed doors and got an assist, and with manger less toon he could find a place in the team in the next 2 weeks if current defenders aren't preforming.

PvA is a defensive liability, he lost his place at Vitesse because of that and the same will happen at Sunderland. They have tightened up considerably without him in the team. If he plays they'll get less clean sheets. More likely he doesn't play, especially once Reveillere is back.

        How does this look;

        Foster / Panti

        Terry Jones Wisdom PVA Santon

        Sanchez Hazard ADM Chaldi Boyd

        Giroud Costa Kane

Next week swap out Giroud for maybe Gomis/Benteke/Lukaku, then if Kun finds his feet bring him in for Costa. Although I'm thinking of sticking with Costa for a differential as that's what he'll become with so many already saying Kun will be a cert when fully fit.

hes a better option because hes 0.5m cheaper and has returned slightly more points. (altho he played 2 games more)

          they both have 6 BPS.

so go ahead. waste 0.5m on Lescott over Wisdom.

A bit miffed that on BBC FA Cup Match of the Day on Monday, they linked AFC Wimbledon to the old Wilmbledon eg Linekar harping on about "and can AFC do what they did in the 1988 Final ?"

Let me get this clear....despite the wide range of opinions on Wimbledon / MK Dons / AFC, one thing is for certain...AFC did NOT win the 1988 FA Cup ! Just a look at their "Honours" will confirm this. I am not claiming MK Dons won the 1988 Cup either...it was the OLD Wimbledon (although MK are legally the "continuation" of that team)

I know most of you on here hate the MK Dons....but I wanted to say that I despise the way the media etc somehow link the old Wimbledon to AFC...they are NOT the same thing ! Indeed...AFC are now located in Kingston for a start 🙂

Better news...looks like Keith Andrews, the best player MK have had, is set to rejoin us 🙂

Q: So what is protection all about?
A: If a player is red or yellow flagged for 2 days or more, once their (i) icon goes back to grey, they are protected for 8 days.

Q: What does that effectively mean?
A: It means that for the next 8 days their price is frozen. It can neither rise nor fall. Once the 8 days is up, the player’s NTI or NTO is reset to zero and the normal rules of increases/decreases kick in from there.

So even if Aguero comes off the bench this weekend, his price will be protected until the Arsenal game. Therefore he won't start to rise until the week of the Chelsea game which seems the point when most think he will start and also transfer him in.

Saving until GW24 - give Sturridge as much time as possible to show his fitness!

    just saying it now..

if (and it's a big and massive and pipe-dreamy if) United signed Varane and Hummels this month, we could win the title..

that's even less likely (is that possible? haha)

maybe you could say there was a 0.5% chance if Barca DIDN'T have a transfer ban 😉

Is replacing Sanchez stupidity? Everyone has him and wondering if might just go a differential as well as ADM, Haz and Silva

you just know Stevie G's swansong is going to a media love in and he'll start scoring ... so thinking him

This was my first thought too, although Man City next week doesn't fill me with too much confidence to double up

    Can You please RMWCT Thanks

    Pants, Heaton
    PVA, Hutton, Wisdom, Toby, Azpi
Haz, Sanchez, Silva, Di Maria, Albrighton
    Kane, Rooney, Costa

Would you make any changes ??? Can do Costa to Ings and Albrighton to Fabs but it would be very hard every week knowing who to bench and I hate that as I always pick the wrong one, but would give me a serious midfield?

you have two sunderland defense (GK and pva).

i would replace PVA with a stoke or swans defender for ideal rotation

you are doubled up on MANU attack. I've seen a lot of people here prefer falcao over rooney also.

if you are planning to do rooney/falcao-> aguero i would replace silva (maybe with fab?/downing/siggy/barkley/tadic)

Possibly Messi but would be at the expense of Vidal I think. Unlikely to get both.

      also that midfield sucks
