634x258 Fixtures

Having analysed those sides with the strongest upcoming schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks, we now check out those with tougher fixtures to follow. Aston Villa and Leicester brace themselves for some hard times ahead, whilst Man City and Liverpool are also set for a testing run of matches.

Leicester

“frisking

Nigel Pearson’s side have home clashes with Stoke and Palace in the next three Gameweeks to continue the form that has harvested seven points and a pair of clean sheets in their last three league outings.

Unfortunately for the Foxes, they also go head-to-head with Man United, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea in the upcoming six rounds of fixtures, suggesting Fantasy points could be few and far between. With three-goal Jeffrey Schlupp injured, Marcin Wasilewski’s 3.9 price tag enhances his appeal as a cheap fifth defender, and with Riyad Mahrez still off on international duties, only David Nugent – with a goal and assist in the last three – has shown any signs of form.

Liverpool

“frisking

A trip to struggling Villa offers hope for the Reds this weekend, but beyond that one, they square up to four of the current top seven (WHM, TOT, sot, MCI) and also face a Merseyside derby trip to Everton.

At the back, Martin Skrtel has earned bonus each time his side have delivered a clean sheet, though the big centre-half may have to rely on his aerial threat in the box to remain in consideration. The imminent return of Daniel Sturridge could provide the spark that reignites our interest in Brendan Rodgers’ main men, though in the meantime, Raheem Sterling – back after a weekend rest – and Philippe Coutinho, with returns in four of his last five, are the likeliest to deliver for the ever-improving Reds, who have dropped just two points in the last four Gameweeks.

Manchester City

“frisking

City’s next two fixtures play a significant part in their place in this week’s article. Nonetheless, having hammered Arsenal 6-3 at the Etihad last season, those holding the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva will have little fear ahead of this weekend’s match, though there’s no denying the trip to Stamford Bridge somewhat curbs our enthusiasm.

Trips to Liverpool and Stoke – the latter having merged victorious at the Etihad earlier in the campaign – could throw a spanner in the works, though our fears are perhaps more focused on the City defence here. Whilst Aguero has shown his fixture-proof potential time and again, a defence that has conceded twice to both Burnley and Sunderland in the last three matches hardly instils much confidence. Vincent Kompany’s return could boost the points of potential of Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy, though – City shipped just one goal in the last four with their captain on board.

Also Be Wary Of….

Swansea
With Wilfried Bony now finally off to City, Garry Monk faces a tough task in addressing a run of form which has seen the Welsh club score more than a single goal in just one of the last ten Gameweeks.

Swansea go head-to-head with Chelsea and Southampton’s resilient defences in the next two and then face Sunderland, West Brom and United’s stubborn rearguards. Few will be willing to gamble on Bafetimbi Gomis right now, in spite of his kind 6.5 price tag, whilst Monk’s recent admission that Gylfi Sigurdsson has been playing through the pain barrier with a foot problem is not what the playmaker’s owners want to hear. At the back, it’s worth noting that all eight of Swansea’s clean sheets have arrived against clubs in the bottom nine, suggesting that invetment in the likes of Lukasz Fabianksi and Neil Taylor should be left alone for now.

West Ham
Big Sam’s side have just two favourable fixtures in the next eight Gameweeks as the schedule continues to turn against them. Those holding Hammers players will be looking for returns at home to Hull this weekend, but following that one, only the visit of Palace in Gameweek 27 (liv, MUN, sot, tot, CPL, CHE, ars) offers some respite.

Stewart Downing sits in 25% of Fantasy Premier League sides but his owners have a real decision to make once the Tigers clash is out of the way, whilst Andy Carroll’s four goals and an assist in the last seven may not be enough to convince. At the back, Allardyce’s outfit have mustered just one clean sheet in the last eight and it’s fair to say that the appeal of Aaron Cresswell and co. looks limited right now.

Aston Villa
Paul Lambert’s side approach a testing run of fixtures in dire form after scoring just one goal in their last six fixtures. Villa will be hoping new playmaker Carles Gil can spark the struggling Christian Benteke back into form after a series of poor displays, though with back-to-back showdowns against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea immediately on the cards, there’s little hope of returns at either end of the pitch.

The Midlands side also travel to Hull and Newcastle and play host to Stoke over the next six matches, though it’s mainly their defence that’s likely to benefit here. Villa haven’t conceded more than a single goal since Gameweek 10, though have frustratingly earned just three clean sheets in the 11 matches over that period. Brad Guzan’s save points and Alan Hutton’s 4.4 price tag are the main attractions, though their appeal is somewhat lessened by a knee injury to Ron Vlaar, which could keep the centre-half on the sidelines for six weeks.

As a casual I get annoyed at people who comment on teams being to template.

They are template for a reason – because they are good players and top managers own them. A common reply to this is that you can’t rise in rank if you only own template players. Wrong!

If you take the 2 most highly owned players from each position in the top 10k Sanchez (87%), Hazard (87%), Costa (79%) and Kane (83%) - do some simple math and you find that ALL of these 4 players are owned by less than 50% of managers in the top 10k.

So if they all perform you get a jump on over half of the top 10k – not bad eh!?

If you take all 11 most owned players – and hence THE most template team – this dramatically drops to around 0.2% of managers with all 11 players in their squad.

So having the most template team is, in a weird way, differential.

Granted not all highly owned players are good fantasy options - but the argument for not having a template player or a template squad because you cant rise in rank is completely flawed.

I think your calculation is wrong. 58% of the top 1000 have all four of Sanchez, Hazard, Costa and Kane according to FFF. If you take Costa out of it (which some are) it's 76% owning all three. You won't get a jump on many players at the top by owning those three. It's more a matter of keeping pace.

There are only two ways of gaining on the top 1000 as far as I can see. First is to eliminate the high ownership player(s) that you don't think will perform well and to replace them with someone that performs better. Second is to make better captain decisions than they do.

That would make sense with my estimate - you would expect a higher % of top 1k managers to own those players.

Anyway you still jump on 46% of the top 1k with just those 4 - pretty good if you ask me. These are by far the most owned players (next is silva ~60%) - add in defenders (wisdom highest ~40%) and teams are very different.

I get this. It can be boring when everyone has the same players, but as you say, they are usually template because they are the best options. Getting captaincy right is key, and getting players earlier in the season than others (a crucial part of me being top 4k, and at one point being 600-odd, is that I had Sanchez from the start).

Captaincy is crucial. Although Im pretty crap at it and still top 400. For me its more about getting the best players (usually highly owned) and rarely taking punts.

Some punts can payoff, but over the season your more likely to lose than gain.

That said I do have berahino in my team!

Agreed, it shouldn't be a reason not to pick a player. Only points matter.
That being said, it makes the weekend more exciting for me to own a player below 15 % ownership.
      Exciting but also stressful.

More than looking at full team, I have the feeling captaincy is of major importance, and I suck at it (managed to avoid every haul from everyone).

I think template is good. When people say it's template around here it doesn't necesarily a bad thing IMO. Template for a reason.

And it's only template in FFS which have like, 25k (?) out of the 3 mill player. That represent a mere 1%.

      1. Ruth_NZ

25k? 60% of 3.5m teams are classed as 'active'. That's 2.1m active teams. Let's guess that 600k of those are actually 2nd or 3rd teams managed by the same person. That leaves 1.5m active managers at a reasonable guess.

FFS is known as the primary advice site for FPL. If you google "fantasy football" you get FFS up as an option without having to type it.

If only 20% of active managers look on here from time to time that's probably 300k. I suspect it's more than that myself. Which is why this site is so good at creating bandwagons.

I like this post a lot.

I have previously considered making a post providing some stats around how many permutations of team there would be with only 30 players available to choose from (4 GKs, 10 DFs, 10 MDs, 6 STs) and some further analysis of how ownership is spread to demonstrate the fallacy that is the assertion that only by having low ownership players can you differentiate yourself.

I've never bothered because it was going to be nerdy to the point that people would simply ignore it - you've presented it much more clearly than I would. Any given combination of players is sufficiently different to almost everyone else to allow rises and falls to happen.

Nothing's too nerdy here. I'd read it 🙂

But having PvA Keane Wisdom instead of Chester Baird Colocinni is hardly going to make a huge difference. And it's only the minor players that vary amongst the FFS template team, the core remains similar.

In any given week that can be the difference of 3 clean sheets and/or goals/assists/bonus though - 15 points no sweat. Take into account captaincy choice and benching decisions and there are enough permutations that I never worry about ownership %. I know I'm in the minority though, people get very excitable on the subject 🙂

I thought a template team was just template for this site. So you will go up OR, but not overtake competitors in FFS leagues easily.

Also, you don't have to match EVERY player in a team for it to be template. Just the main core. So your stats are a little misleading imo.

Plus many of the 11 most owned players are not in the template of the moment (there are dead teams, for example).

Being template on this site is probably a good thing though!

FFS would be mainly players who are very good at the game and most would strive to be in top 1000 if not higher.

With this being said seeing someone in multiple RMTs on here does not necessarily mean they are highly owned it means that the top players who use this site have that player which is a good thing. Take Pva for example, he is in many many wildcard teams on this site but has 1% ownership in the game. I think following this sites 'template' team is never a downside and has mostly advantages due to the number of good players on this site.

If you took the 'template' team from FFS RMTs and left it as a dead team it would definitely beat the team with just the highest owned players come the end of the season.

What I'm saying is I don't think the "everyone has him in there team so I won't gain anything" argument is very valid. If everyone on here has him there is probably a reason.

I'm afraid your maths is wrong. Those four players could be owned by 79% of players. They are not independent so you cannot simply multiply through.

While you are technically correct, I would argue that they are virtually independent and my math is pretty good as a rough guide.

I don't think that owning Costa drastically effects the chance of owning Sanchez or Hazard for example (if anything maybe less due to price constraints).

They are not independent. The reason is the minority that don't own a player eg Kane are more likely to enjoy going against the grain and are more likely to have other differentials in their team.

You still have a point but it is important to point out the error so as not to mislead people

Great post. The "template" is constantly changing anyway: in December, Azpi was the template Chelsea defender and now it's Terry. Just pick the people you think will score the most points and it's highly unlikely your rivals will have the exact same team. Even then your captain choices will likely be different.

It depends on your aspirations. If you are happy with your position and don't want to take big risks going with template players is a good idea.

If you feel like your season has gone badly so far you may wish to take some punts as you may feel you have nothing to lose.

Me personally? My season has gone well but I could see myself taking some crazy punts before the end of the season to chase the dream of finishing as high as possible

The error in the maths increases as you expand the series to 11 players. This means that the template is not a differential, weird way or not.

I have often thought that a good mix is something like 4 big punts (value-add players, call it alpha) and 7 high ownership players (allowing you to benefit from the rising tide, call it beta). By choosing the highest ownership players you can most closely approximate the overall league (or a specific segment) using only part of your squad, maximizing your beta. This then allows you to pick a number of punts with greater comfort.

      Very enjoyable post btw.

Thanks. I probably should have stated it's an estimation - and a rough one. The exact % could be higher OR low than the estimate. If we take the 15man squad - I don't think you could find more than 5 teams that are identical in the top 10k (0.0005%). Add captaincy choice to the mix and the template is very much differential 😉

No need to look for any punts if you want to climb!

It's interesting how it's split over the squad.

Based on the most owned players in the top 1k

          Foster, Pantillimon
          Terry, Wisdom, Zabaletta, Bertrand, Hutton
          Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Siggy, Downing
          Costa, Austin, Kane

6.4% own all 8 of the attacking players, where as less than 0.05% (could be zero) own all 7 defenders/keepers

Therefore you could argue that the differential of the template is mostly in your defenders.

My numbers don't fully reflect the situation though. As defender points are shared (excluding attacking returns and bonus points), you could argue that you should look at teams which own any Chelsea, WBA, Man City, Soton, Villa defenders rather than the individuals above. However, I doubt that there are any high ranking teams with Chelsea, QPR or Spurs forwards that aren't Costa, Austin or Kane.

Therefore the 6.4% is a more useful indicator of the template's differential status rather than the number calculated for the defenders.

Unfortunately this is not entirely true. Firstly your 'simple math' isn't quite so simple. It could be the case that the 79% of Costa owners also own Sanchez, Hazard and Kane. Obviously this is extremely unlikely however there is some correlation between ownership of these players. For example, if someone owns Hazard, Sanchez and Costa it is quite likely they will also own Kane because of their budget constraint. The number of top 10k teams that own all four players is anywhere between 79% (assuming all costa owners own the other three) and 50%.

But I agree about the irritation of people labelling teams 'too template'. The idea of searching for a 'differential' makes no sense. Instead you should simply search for the player(s) that will score the most points given your budget. For instance trading out a high ownership player (Sigurdsson) for a differential (say Moses (0.2%)) offers no benefit unless Moses scores more points than Sigurdsson over the period you own him.

Just as owning a differential (Moses) allows you to move up the rankings when he scores highly, you will move down the rankings when the template player (Sigurdsson) scores highly.

I agree that it's not an exact % but the % of top 10k players that own all four could hypothetically be between 0% (not 50) and 79%. Both extremes are highly unlikely. It IS likely to be around 50% - so my simple math gives a good rough estimate without getting into complex probability weighting.

As others have noted above the figure is 58% in top 1k. Which would fit with 50% top 10k - as top 1k players are more likely to own all four.

But yes completely agree otherwise with the main point 🙂

      Hear, hear!

A very simple bit of math but, a wholly important one in order to understand what's happening in our game.

That said, I feel there's some merit to throwing in a *proven punt* into our WC squad, mainly one that can double as a nice differential captain's option.

We've all seen what a timely Costa, Austin, or Aguero hat-trick can do a savvy managers rank...

So, perhaps there's something to be said about considering a Giroud, Di Maria or Sturridge type player for our teams.

Totally agree. Ive been thinking the same. At the End of day we r comparing who can afford to recruit the most top scoring players and usually they are also the most expensive players. So The ability to own both kun and costa without destroYing the rest of your team is a huge advantage against your rival who has lower tv.

Some players have high ownership among the top 1k players for historical reasons.

Many of the current top 1k have probably owned Costa from the start - it would be difficult to be in the top 1k if they did not own him in the early weeks.

But it is not clear-cut that he is still essential - there are alternatives. I expect the top players to split into two camps after they have played their January Wildcards - some will keep Costa and some won't - so there will be more than one template.

It will be interesting to see what his ownership is when the January Wildcard season is over!

Very funny. Everton have been very foolish with their women's team imo. Women's football is one of the major growth areas in football and the level of investment needed is minimal compared to the men's game.

But Everton have invested sod all, sold all our best players and squandered the head start we once had. Eejits.

I went to an Everton - Arsenal game a few years back. Arsenal were euro champs or summat and Everton were second in the English league to them. The game wasn't advertised at the ground they were playing and they couldn't afford to print a basic programme for it. Massive eejits.

    Forster,
    Cresswell, Bertrand, Ivan, (Kelly, Wasilewski)
    Sterling, Downing, ADM, Fabregas, Sanchez
    Kane, Costa, (Barnes )

Have enough to do Kane to Aguero?

    Should I? (keeping Costa)

Hmm yea it's tough. Don't want to take too big of a hit and I like my midfield a lot. But it's hard to decide when Kane is scoring every game

Ah sorry, I assumed Wildcard with so many of them flying about! With hits involved it's a bit trickier.

Would probably leave it until after the two tricky Man City games and look to save 2FTs to do the Aguero move GW24 for Hull at home... Assuming he hasn't injured himself again by then!

Sterling's fixtures nosedive about then too so could be a transfer route downgrading him.

Neither. Cahill has not been in great form and Zouma has looked very good whenever he has played. I said a week ago that Zouma could displace Cahill in some PL games, Mourinho gradually introduced Varane into the RM team at age 20 and could easily do the same with Zouma.

However it is extremely unlikely that Zouma will play every PL game, he'll probably start in a few easier ones plus the Cups. Cahill will still start the majority of PL games in all likelihood. I'd expect Cahill to start this weekend and Zouma to play in the FA Cup on the 24th.

Baird: anyone got a feel for this situationc (sorry repost got stuk end of prev post)

3 straight 90 min starts as LFB

has he won outright that FB pos and now nailed against Poco?

Who is more defensive oriented, Poco or Baird, since it seems TP will go w/ that...

also, theres Gamboa who has come in as a sub for the LFB pos for BOTH Baird/Poco. On the other hand, Gamboa started as well as RFB for wisdom.

Arsenal always look a couple of signings away from challenging from the title, and they never seem to make those signings. I don't think it's just a personnel issue though, Wenger's tactics can be surprisingly naive for a manager with such experience.

Personally I think they'll finish 3rd or 4th. Southampton won't keep it going for the entire season although Koeman is a very good manager. Some friends of mine are Feyenoord fans and they were heartbroken when he left.

Jovetic might be going out on loan. Aguero will be the only regular starter imo. Others will rotate

Jovetic will cover Aguero when he's not needed.

What's the thoughts on Bony now?....Is he a starter or a deputy?

I've posted before that Pell needs to sort out Aguero's game time. He's simply not up to the rigours of multiple competitions twice a week...in fact he's barely up to just playing in the prem. Is the Bony transfer part of that solution or do you think they both play together in the same team?

    1. Doolittle
      • 13 Years

I wouldn't expect him to be nailed on, it will be like last season I think when Negredo was there. It would be very harsh on Dzeko and Jovetic if they got no game time. Aguero is still undoubtedly the main man.

I don't know if Pelli plans to start 2 forwards but you have to assume he's above Jovetic and Dzeko.

I posted this on previous page, I believe Pell has to be smarter with Aguero's game-time.

Situation will certainly be worth watching as to how Pelle plays things with his line-ups. He's got the Champs league to worry about and he'll certainly want a fit Aguero till the end of the season so his playing time might be majorly affected.
Aguero is the main man but having him fit @ available for when Pelle feels he is most needed might be key here.

Agreed....Plenty of 60 mins, if they are winning, and no cup competitions....I can't see any other choice with him.

The bottom line is a striker is paid to score goals and you can't do that sat on the bench. I would put Aguero as one of the top five players in the world ad a forward and yet here he is in mid Jan with just one more goal than Austin....

Aguero might be the main for UCL (might) but as you say, plenty of 60 minute performances.
Problem for Pell is when game isn't going his way, he can't take him off and in fairness his last injury was 2 minutes into the game.

He has a fairly unique physique. Some players are just plain injury prone, others can run through walls.
