Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Harry Kane’s phenomenal recent form earns him top place in our Captain Poll. Having served up 18 points against Chelsea in his previous home match, over 34% have backed the Spurs forward to get amongst the goals again, though visitors Sunderland could prove stubborn opponents – Gus Poyet’s side have four clean sheets in their last five road trips.

Fit-again Sergio Aguero sits in second spot as City prepare for the visit of Arsenal. Despite being handed just 25 minutes off the bench last weekend, over 21% are confident the Argentine will wreak havoc against the Gunners as Manuel Pellegrini looks for a repeat of the display that saw City win 6-3 at the Etihad in the same fixture last season.

Chelsea pair Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have been selected by just 6% of voters for a trip to Swansea. As we mentioned in yesterday’s Frisking the Fixtures article, all eight of the Welsh side’s clean sheets have arrived against bottom-nine opposition, suggesting the league leaders will pose Garry Monk’s side problems aplenty as they look to retain their two-point advantage over City at the summit. Hazard has delivered a goal or assist in five of his last six – including back-to-back away strikes – though Costa’s form on the road is a worry, with a single goal in his previous five.

Somewhat surprisingly, the red-hot form of Alexis Sanchez has persuaded a mere 4% of voters to back him with the armband. City have conceded twice to Burnley and Sunderland in their last two at the Etihad and face a major task to keep the Chilean on the periphery this Sunday.

Angel Di Maria (5%) is the favoured United option for the trip to QPR. Harry Redknapp’s side are unbeaten in seven in front of their own fans, though, and won’t make it easy for the Argentine, who has managed a mere three assists in his last eight appearances. Wayne Rooney earns 3% of votes, yet has managed only goal and two assists away from Old Trafford all season.

Elsewhere, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Danny Ings have also persuaded 3% to hand them the armband ahead of showdowns with Villa and Palace respectively. The latter’s home comforts came to fruition against QPR last weekend and he’ll be looking for more of the same as the Eagles roll up to Turf Moor – Ings, impressively, has now returned points in seven of his last ten appearances.

Nah he's top class. I've seen nothing from James to suggest he's better. Isco comes up with the magic now and again as well, perhaps even more consistently. As it stands he's Madrid's most consistent attacker aside from Ronniegoals.

Much better than Bale ATM. But Bale's being played OOP and asked to do a ton of defensive work. So it's not exactly his fault.

Pellegrini put him on the map when he was at Malaga. No one knew about him then.

He put himself on the map at Malaga and in the Spain youth setup. And while he got his big move he seems to get lost amongst all the hype at Madrid, which is my point.

To Siggy or not to Siggy comes down to this:

Think he very may well this week. LVG playing him up front does certainly not help him, but if he gets a role in MF, he may very well get the points I hope. Can't really see who else I can bring in for the same amount of money. Too short for Cesc, maybe Silva can do me good.

Had DC from GW1 myself too, and prepared to drop for Aguero. He is consistent, but doesn't get double digits points very often. Fab is just as consistent and is 2.0 less. So, for example, you could do Costa/Chadli -> Austin/Fab, and still have 2.0 leftover to use in other places. Nothing wrong with keeping Costa though.

    Foster/Hamer
    Hutton/Terry/PvA/Baird/Wasilewski
    Sanchez/Hazard/ADM/Chadli/Boyd
    Costa/Kane/Aguero

If i take Costa out it means i can get Bertrand for Baird, upgrade Hamer to Pantilimon for better rotation, and get Ings (2.9 itb, later on upgrade Ings to Giroud)

No but I've come up with a theory that seen as Walcott, Ozil, Giroud, Welbeck, Ramsey are back and are coming back the points will be shared. Yes I know a risk but we'll see. I'm confident with the team I have currently. Next week Sterling is going out but who for I'm not decided on yet. I'm thinking Tadic. I'm only have Di Maria for a few weeks 4-5 then Sanchez will be coming back in 🙂 Only one week where I think he'll do well and it's against Villa

What do you think of this team?

    Foster myhill
    Terry Bertrand pva wisdom wasilewski
    Hazard Sanchez Fabregas adm Marney
    Aguero Austin Kane

Bit concerned with two WBA keepers and wisdom. Should I be?

Triple West Brom means you won't be able to draft in an attacker of theirs if they start firing... could be risky. Myhill -> Hamer imo

              That's very attacking. 😆

Can work with Modric as a balance though.

                Indeed. 😆

Even with Modric they don't have enough steel. Kroos doesn't protect the back four like Alonso does.

Going to have to sell one of my front 8 in order to avoid a constant dillema. But for the mean time...

    One of

    Aguero
    Kane
    Giroud
    Chadli
    Haz
    Fab
    Sanchez

Currently thinking of dropping giroud to the bench. Any thoughts?
