After days of speculation, Chelsea confirmed the signing of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado on a four-and-a-half-year contract on Monday evening. Speaking to the club’s official website, the Colombian midfielder – who arrives for a reported fee of £27 millionadmitted that he can’t wait to work under the guidance of Jose Mourinho:

“It is really going to be brilliant to work with one of the best coaches anywhere in the world. I’m very proud to be playing for him and I think he is going to help me grow into a better player…I’m a quick and positive player and I hope to show that on the field of play and help all of my teammates. The best part about this dream is that I’m going to be part of such a big club. For me that is a huge motivation to perform well.”

The History

Cuadrado began his footballing education at Atletico Uraba in his native Colombia, at which point he operated primarily as a forward. His searing pace and ability to outfox defenders prompted a change of position onto the right wing, which ultimately resulted in a move to Colombian first division side Independiente Medellin.

In 2009, Cuadrado made the step up to the European leagues, securing a five-year deal with Italian top-flight side Udinese. After only managing 20 league appearances over the course of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns, the sprightly winger joined struggling Serie A outfit Lecce in August 2011 in an attempt to salvage his floundering career. Although Lecce eventually succumbed to relegation that season, Cuadrado impressed sufficiently to earn a move to Fiorentina the following summer.

Since his move to Viola, the 26-year-old has been a mainstay in manager Vincenzo Montella’s first XI, earning 68 league outings in the previous two seasons. His 15-goal haul in all competitions last term alerted a bevy of clubs throughout Europe, including La Liga giants Barcelona, who held talks with Cuadrado during the summer transfer window.

Cuadrado also caught the eye with his performances for Colombia at the World Cup in Brazil. The 26-year-old recorded one goal and four assists for Los Cafeteros, tying with Germany’s Toni Kroos as the tournament’s leading assist provider. So far, he’s played for his country on 37 occasions and found the net five times.

The Prospects

With Andre Schurrle packed off to Wolfsburg and Mo Salah heading to Fiorentina on loan, Mourinho is clearly keen to freshen up his options on the right flank. Undoubtedly, Cuadrado’s arrival at Stamford Bridge casts doubt over Willian’s status as one of the regualars in Chelsea’s starting line-up. Although the Brazilian conforms perfectly to the Special One’s desire for industrious two-way wingers that embrace defensive duties, Willian has managed just one goal and two assists over 22 league appearances thus far. Cuadrado’s inclusion could transform the south London outfit into an even more terrifying prospect on the counter-attack.

Cuadrado boasts the ability to initiate powerful, sinuous runs that put opposition defenders on the back foot. Compared with Willian, the attacking stats are stacked firmly in his favour: so far this season, Cuadrado has bettered the Brazilian for minutes per shot (27.3 to 39.8) and key passes (40.2 to 67). Furthermore, his work ethic is also superior – he’s ahead of Willian for tackles (1.2 to 1.1) and interceptions (0.9 to 0.4) per appearance over 2014/15, highlighting just why Mourinho has brought him on board.

The South American possesses the versatility to play in any of the front three positions in Chelsea’s typical 4-2-3-1 formation, as evidenced by Cuadrado’s recent minutes in the second striker role for Fiorentina. Certainly, this affords Mourinho the opportunity to rotate the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar should he wish to do so, though whilst the latter has been victim to his manager’s tinkering on occasion this term, the Belgian looks immune to Jose’s rotational whims.

Setting you back 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League, the new boy has been placed in the same price bracket as the likes of Oscar, Christian Eriksen, Santi Cazorla and Raheem Sterling. Given that Oscar, Hazard and Cesc Fabregas sit amongst the top five regular midfielders in terms of points per appearance this season, Cuadrado faces a tough task to battle past that trio as our preferred route into Mourinho’s flourishing midfield. On the other hand, Willian’ paltry 2.8 points per appearance suggests the Colombian could be the answer if Mourinho is looking for more output from the right flank.

The inclusion of another potent goal threat in Chelsea’s side might also impact Fabregas’ already astonishing assist output. With the Spaniard (37.4%) just edging out Eden Hazard (36.2%) in terms of ownership, we’ll be keeping a close eye on how Cuadrado’s presence on the pitch influences this internal contest. Having weathered the storm from their title rivals Manchester City, Chelsea now face a favourable run of fixtures up until their blank Gameweek 27, consisting of a visit to Aston Villa and home ties against Everton and Burnley.

These matches could serve as a perfect introduction to the unique rigours of the Premier League for Cuadrado and potentially allow Mourinho to rest some key players before the Capital One Cup Final on March 1, as the Blues look to avenge their New Year’s Day mauling at the Lane and pick up the first silverware of the season.

Evening. Am just starting to get my head around gws 27/28. Asked earlier today but would like to know others' plans if they have any.

My early thought is to have ten solid outfield players for gw27 with three Chelsea DGWs on the bench and then have two FTs in hand so I can load up on more DGWs for 28. Fixtures are immense for Spurs and QPR so any hits should pay off handsomely.

Something like three Chelsea, Kane, Eriksen, Chadli, maybe Austin?

If I get a chance I will put Lloris on my bench prior to the blank GW if I can do it so I can get and extra DGW player for the week without a hit

His price is much the same as Courtois which means you can easily swap him over for the Chelsea DGW. Unless you want to max them out elsewhere of course

Thanks Cheeseoid. I'll see if I fancy the fixtures around those two. It would mean four DGWers on the bench for GW27 and possibly the extra points.

That is the logic. Spurs have great fixtures and in a DGW the only player you really know will play is the keeper

I did it last year with Speroni. A keeper is an easy bonus DGW player if you are going to have all non playing players on your bench for a week

So with the resigned QPR boss, I actually like the look of the QPR vs Saints match offensively.
This could be the game that puts the Saints offense back on our radars, it wouldn't surprise me to see a 4-0 game coming up. Especially with the likes of Morgan and Wanyama back in training, a fully fit Saints offense may do some damage in this run (qpr, WHU, LIV, wba, CRY).

My current WC draft is accommodating a front 8 with Mane as the 4th mid and money ITB to upgrade him to Ozil/Wally in case he underwhelms. Coupled with his Gw27 fixture (wba), he's gret bench cover for Hazard in my side.

Anyone else tempted by the Saints, or am I the only sinful one here?

Yes, definitely tempted. I've gone for A. Johnson as my 4th MID, but very keen on drafting Mane in to that spot.

My biggest dilemma at the moment is whether or not to use the spare cash I've left in the bank - with the view to bring Sanchez in for Cazorla, once he's back. The form that Cazorla is in... it might be worth spending the cash elsewhere...

      1. Zasa
        • 11 Years

AJ as a 4th mid? Interesting, not to keen on starting him every game if I had him tbh. Ideally would rotate him if I had him IMO

I think Mane is easily the better choice and bigger offensive threat, coupled with playing on the better offensive team.

Not sure you should be planning of getting rid a players who's in great form. I understand you're trying to stay ahead of the curve, but I'd stick with Caz until when/if he's officially rotated and gets slotted to the left wing. For now, I wouldn't be considering a route out mate, IMO of course 😛

Mane is intriguing, and he is a good price to switch to someone like Chadli or Siggy in a few weeks when they return and their fixtures improve.

Yeah, in fact keeping Mane and switching to Chadli Gw28 may be the ideal move mate. You get your best use of him Gw27, and swap for better Spurs cover.

Hopefully Morgan and Victor are confirmed for the XI(albeit it's unlikely all 3 of Toby, Victor and Morgan will make it), but nevertheless, Mane before his departure went massively under the radar. This could be his time

Elia? Could be a steal at 5.5 ILF, though not sure he possess as big an attacking threat. Poor finisher and slotted on the right, his goal threat is marginalized w/o the ability to cut in. I'd expect assists more than anything from Elia, hopefully Pelle catches some form to boost both their appeal

I am sat looking at otential transfers in and looking at GW 27 and thinking that although you may have good fixtures around it I am going to need to play you that week and I don't want to take an uneccessary hit. Ruth sounds more pretentious than Rickard was. Rickard was a lovable chap. I am curious as to who Ruth really is though. Seems like maybe he is Trigger's brother who happens to be a better writer. That would fit the bill. Something very disingenuous about that Ruth though to me..."newcomers" to the site never, ever sound like he does.

Yeah I can see that, Rick was great fun and even though he was here all the time, I never minded him. Enjoyed his posts that weren't related to Aliens

His first posts were very contrarian as well, not many newcomers, let alone rookies come with that type of confidence to claim the mods had an anti-Costa agenda (though he was right). Also remember Rick always agreeing with what Doosra and Trigger posted, so there's that too. Something's definitely not 100% though, I think it's Rick mate, or at least a veteran from before
Doesn't help he doesn't post a link either

    Team for the week:

    Pantilimon (4.0)
    Terry, Clyne, Baird (PVA, Hutton)
    Sanchez*, Hazard, Cazorla, Sterling (Puncheon)
    Aguero, Giroud, Kane

    0.7 ITB, 0 FT

So should I do Sanchez -> Silva for a hit or just let Pumcheon (v Lei) come in. Another Sanchez drop would mean I'd lose value in him.

I agree with you Gloria about the Mahrez point but I have a wonderful selection of mids at the moment (Hazard-Ozil-Mane-Coutinho-Nasri-de Jong). Just had an inquiry about Coutinho so looking at Ulloa as a rotation option with my horrendous strikers.

I'd consider selling mate, isn't the best United option for the time being IMO, and has no form to speak of. His hefty price tag isn't warranted either, I'd rather have anyone of Silva, Caz, Ozil, Wally, Sterling, Oscar or Coutinho over him right now.

You're right on the fixture part, but he just seems to flatter to deceive for FPL. The potential is definitely there, I'd love for him to hit some solid goal scoring form, but LvG limits his ceiling in every aspect

How good did Cazorla look against Villa? I mean, for crying out loud....the lad was silky smooth. Like he had eyes in the back of his head on some plays. On pens.....starting to think maybe going with him over Sanchez is an idea to contemplate. I mean, Sanchez is the bomb always 'bout to explode, but now with Ozil, Walcott and so back in the fold, it's logical to think that Sanchez's offensive returns and even playing time could be compromised.

He did look good in general but ergghhhh how those last fifteen minutes gave him a truck load of points. He was on for just the assist until the pen and Bellerin goal. Can you tell if I own him or not from this? 🙂

I don't own him either. I own Giroud instead, so I was frustrated as heck with the end of that game as well. Giroud going off at the 70 min mark or so was just so funny....Not! He was my captain, actually. Seems like every time I watch a game with my captain in it, he ends up getting subbed out early. At least he netted me a goal and an assist before he took a hike.

He's been the engine behind everything good that comes out of that Gunners attack mate. Jammy pens yes, but I see it as an added bonus, his performances on the pitch have been justified and have translated to FPL points in a just manner IMO

When he's slotted to the wing, then I'd consider taking him out

Hopefully RVP stays on the bench, doesn't partner up well with Falcao at all and Falcao plays his best football as a lone striker. Rooney plays that CF role so well, but LvG would never play him there I imagine

RvP plays I'm afraid. He also played well last night and at the weekend. Shame about his ridiculous pricing.

Indeed he does sadly. Falcao was benched last night correct? As well as Jones?

May be a blessing. 11.2 for a non starting recovering player at a price when he had Suarez. Bad fixtures. Not even a top 6 team. No Suarez this year.

Compare 11.0 Costa who plays for an actual top team (leader) who has Hazard, Oscar, Fabregas, Cuadrado supplying him.

The final is on February 8th and City play Stoke on February 12th. I'd guess they'd play then, or the week after.

The 12th looks a stretch. Players often get back from ACON late, injured or in some kind of disconcerted state. I doubt Toure, Toure and Bony will play in the PL before GW 26.

Play Baird or PVA (have Foster)

I know Baird might not be nailed. Other subs to consider are Wasil / Boyd

How does this look for a current WC team?

    Forster (McCarthy)
    Clyne Bellerin Wollscheid Azpi Wisdom
    JWP Sanchez Ozil Haz AdM
    Kane Gayle Aguero
    0.21 ITB

AdM isn't leaving my team so the last decision left to be made is between Jones/Silva and Ozil/Azpi

      ADM to Sterling.
      Gayle to Defoe

I always wonder why they put lifejackets on planes. Surely parachutes make more sense?

Surely they are more likely to go wrong in the air and be able to escape safely prior to impact?

Escape into the sea? I fail to see your reasoning here. Better to 'crash land' then jump into the sea with a life jacket

Pretty sure the impact of hitting the sea will pretty much see you as a gonner. If are over land a parachute at least gives you a shot of survival

Well, I can't see how difficult it would be to include a lifejacket in a parachute bag.

Maybe someone should invent some kind of suit that passengers wear. It could have its own oxygen supply when necessary....be a flotation device if need be.......have a parachute....and be able to withstand cold/heat extremes. Plus, if it's enclosed and private enough, it could keep fellow passengers that are annoying at bay. A built-in screen on the visor of the helmet that you can watch TV/movies on......speakers in the helmet as well......

" '(Talking about his drink) Look at all the limes in this thing! Look at the limes, how they float. That's good news. Next time I'm on a boat and it capsizes, I will reach for a lime. Like I'll be water-skiing without a life preserver, people will say "What the hell?" and I'll pull out a lime. I'm saved by the buoyancy of citrus."

Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho are such promising picks but all it takes is a very likely knock to Studge and they're all instantly useless again.
