New Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has been busy in the January transfer window, bringing the likes of Yaya Sanogo, Shola Ameobi and Jordon Mutch to Selhurst Park, in addition to acquiring Wilfried Zaha on a permanent deal. The Eagles boss strengthened his defensive options by snapping up Senegal’s Pape Souare, who joins for a reported fee of £3.4m from French club Lille on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Pardew brought several players to Newcastle from Ligue 1 and believes his the 24-yeard-old Souare, who was rumoured to have attracted the interest of Arsenal, can prove to be another big success:

“He’s a full-back who’s experienced at left-back. He’s played a good level at Lille. It’s a club I know well and I’ve taken some good players out of there and hopefully he can follow in the footsteps of Mathieu Debuchy and Yohan Cabaye. We’ve sent him home this week again to get himself together and he’ll be back in on Tuesday for training and we’re looking forward to seeing him.”

The History

Souare’s career began in his home country with Diambars FC before he joined Lille in 2008. Having spent a couple of years in the reserves, he made his first-team debut in 2011 and a year later enjoyed a successful campaign as part of the Senegal Olympic team at London 2012, topping the assist charts with four, ahead of the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Neymar.

Souare spent the 2012/13 season on loan at then newly-promoted Reims, making 23 appearances. He was part of a defence which conceded just 42 goals, better than any other club outside the top eight, helping his side to a 14th-place finish.

Having impressed at Reims, Souare returned to Lille for the 2013/14 season and made 33 appearances, featuring in a multitude of positions from left-back to midfield to left-wing. Lille enjoyed a successful year, finishing third in Ligue 1, and only conceded 26 goals. Renowned for his athleticism going forward, the new Eagles left-back scored three times and created 19 goalscoring chances for his team-mates last year but did have some disciplinary issues – he was cautioned on seven occasions and dismissed once.

Souare has endured a less successful campaign this season, only making 12 appearances for a Lille side which has struggled to recapture the form of recent years. The 24-year-old defender has won five caps for his country, including two appearances in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, while he appeared in both the Champions League and Europa League during his time with the French outfit.

The Prospects

Having also been linked with Swansea’s Neil Taylor during the January transfer window, it’s clear Palace were keen to add a left-back to their squad. Joel Ward was the first choice for the majority of Tony Pulis’ and Neil Warnock’s short reigns but he’s been moved to the right under the new manager, with Martin Kelly starting all three league matches on the left of the back-four instead.

Given that both Ward and Kelly are natural right-backs, Souare looks likely to be handed the chance to immediately cement a place in the starting XI. Having averaged 2.5 interceptions per appearance this season compared to Ward’s 1.8 and Kelly’s 1.7, the stats suggest Souare’s pace and reading of the game could help improve a defence which has only kept five clean sheets this term.

Set to come in at 4.5 to 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Souare’s upcoming fixtures are fairly mixed. Palace face Leicester, Newcastle and QPR in the next six but also square up to Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton – as their Gameweek 21 win over Spurs showed, though, they are capable of prevailing.

Whether that form brings to defensive returns is debatable, though. Palace have yet to keep a clean sheet under Pardew’s stewardship, and with a more attacking approach being favoured, faith in the Eagles’ defence is low right now. In the final third, though, the 5.6-priced Jason Puncheon’s 23 points in three appearances highlights his turnaround since the new manager rolled up and he seems a more reliable option. With the likes of Patrick van Aanholt and Hector Bellerin offering great value in the budget defender bracket, Fantasy managers may well sit back and wait to see how Souare adapts to his new surroundings before the fixtures become more favourable from Gameweek 29.

    Planning ahead for GW27...

I currently own Terry, Hazard, Kane and Wasi who all have blanks. That means one has to go in order to field 11 players. Who though?

Thinking Wasi but not many decent budget, nailed-on options, except for Yun who also has a blank then.

That would mean a double up with Krul, at least by then we should know if he is nailed on, though

Yeah. But that's not really the issue, whether he is nailed or not I'll still have only 10 players in GW27.

In the same boat and looking at Wasi to Wollscheid or Naughton, both with playable fixtures in gw27. Both a bit more pricey than Wasi tough.

As we get to the business end of the season what are people's thoughts on this as a front 7

    Hazard/Oscar/Wally/ADM
    ---Aguero/Bony/Giroud

Playing the dullard with 3 double ups on the 3 best attacking team is surely the way to go no?

I'm giving Bony a wide berth unless he nails down a starting place, I wouldn't want Oscar, I currently want shut of ADM, and Walcott may be a rotation risk.

Don't See Walcott starting too many games if Alexis is fit

        • 12 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Interesting, what's your reasoning? Now we've got actually class players who are more natural on the wings, My ideal front 6 is:

        ---Coq Rambo
        Wally Ozil Sanchez
        --------Giroud

Rambo Wally and Sanchez running onto Ozil's balls. Oh my. basically all our goals would become Ozil to a posted up Giroud, lay off back to Ozil, through ball/ ball over the top to XXXX, Goal.

        1. Dr. Agabuse
          • 13 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

I understand your reasoning and next season this will be ideal but right now Santi is one of the first on the teamsheet.
He's playing one exceptional game after another. He's in the form of his life and Wenger loves a two footed player in the middle of the park, as he recently stated. I think for now it'll be between Ozil and Walcott (beautiful luxuryProblem) for the last spot and Wenger has shown that he's willing to rely on pace on one side and creativity on the other in the past so I believe that Mesut has the edge with Sánchez being urged to make more runs and to be less in posession. Dont you think Xazorla belongs in there atm? He's just so incredibly confident in the middle of the park right now

Grade 1 hamstring strain is typically 1-3 weeks. This weekend was always less likely, especially now Wenger has good options and hamstring injuries tend to recur if not allowed to recover properly. GW 25 looks a better bet.

Not true. The City game made it plain that Zouma is currently preferred. I have seen him play a number of times this season and he has been very good every time. Plus playing alongside JT will be a vital stage in his development.

The word at Chelsea is that Cahill may be on his way in the summer with Varane coming in.

would you get 4.8m max def for Bertie if it means you can do Austin>Giroud next week?

Yeah I think I might get Naughton so I can do that. I'd rather have Bellerin, but that would mean having to ditch Walcott before getting Giroud.

Yes. Rose could be a decent option with GW 28 in mind.

yes, but DGW makes it a little bit tricky if you have other players that can cover Austins blank

    Thoughts on Sunderland defence?

8 CS this season... Thinking PVA for another version and he will play each week... Need a cheapo

      11 years, 2 months ago

you need a 4.2 to play every week 😯 that cant go well!

As I said it's a different version... You always need at least one maybe two cheapo's in defence to be able to afford good MF / forwards...

Sunderland fixtures look pretty good and they are in FA cup which scores points as well

I need to lose ONE of Nasri & Siggy in order to accommodate Sturridge - who do I ditch?

I won'e be able to get them back ,so would be a permanent switch.......

    Early WC draft. /10?

    Pants/4.0
    Ivan/Clyne/PVA/Bellerin/Wasil
    Hazard/Ozil/Sterling/Eriksen/Blind
    Aguero/Giroud/Kane

    Leaves me with 1.2ITB.

    Thoughts please -

    Panti (Krul)
Terry / Clyne / Wisdom (Cameron / Hutton)
Hazard / Sanchez / ADM / Chadli (JWP)
    Kane / Giroud / Aguero

    2.6 ITB

This week what would you do? -

    A) ADM > Silva
    B) Cameron > PVA
    C) Save FT
    D) Chadli > Sterling/Cazorla/Walcott
    E) ADM & Chadli > Walcott & Silva (-4)
    F)JWP & Chadli > Ameobi & Silva (-4)

    Unfortunately 0.3m off Chadli>Silva
