New Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has been busy in the January transfer window, bringing the likes of Yaya Sanogo, Shola Ameobi and Jordon Mutch to Selhurst Park, in addition to acquiring Wilfried Zaha on a permanent deal. The Eagles boss strengthened his defensive options by snapping up Senegal’s Pape Souare, who joins for a reported fee of £3.4m from French club Lille on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Pardew brought several players to Newcastle from Ligue 1 and believes his the 24-yeard-old Souare, who was rumoured to have attracted the interest of Arsenal, can prove to be another big success:

“He’s a full-back who’s experienced at left-back. He’s played a good level at Lille. It’s a club I know well and I’ve taken some good players out of there and hopefully he can follow in the footsteps of Mathieu Debuchy and Yohan Cabaye. We’ve sent him home this week again to get himself together and he’ll be back in on Tuesday for training and we’re looking forward to seeing him.”

The History

Souare’s career began in his home country with Diambars FC before he joined Lille in 2008. Having spent a couple of years in the reserves, he made his first-team debut in 2011 and a year later enjoyed a successful campaign as part of the Senegal Olympic team at London 2012, topping the assist charts with four, ahead of the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Neymar.

Souare spent the 2012/13 season on loan at then newly-promoted Reims, making 23 appearances. He was part of a defence which conceded just 42 goals, better than any other club outside the top eight, helping his side to a 14th-place finish.

Having impressed at Reims, Souare returned to Lille for the 2013/14 season and made 33 appearances, featuring in a multitude of positions from left-back to midfield to left-wing. Lille enjoyed a successful year, finishing third in Ligue 1, and only conceded 26 goals. Renowned for his athleticism going forward, the new Eagles left-back scored three times and created 19 goalscoring chances for his team-mates last year but did have some disciplinary issues – he was cautioned on seven occasions and dismissed once.

Souare has endured a less successful campaign this season, only making 12 appearances for a Lille side which has struggled to recapture the form of recent years. The 24-year-old defender has won five caps for his country, including two appearances in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, while he appeared in both the Champions League and Europa League during his time with the French outfit.

The Prospects

Having also been linked with Swansea’s Neil Taylor during the January transfer window, it’s clear Palace were keen to add a left-back to their squad. Joel Ward was the first choice for the majority of Tony Pulis’ and Neil Warnock’s short reigns but he’s been moved to the right under the new manager, with Martin Kelly starting all three league matches on the left of the back-four instead.

Given that both Ward and Kelly are natural right-backs, Souare looks likely to be handed the chance to immediately cement a place in the starting XI. Having averaged 2.5 interceptions per appearance this season compared to Ward’s 1.8 and Kelly’s 1.7, the stats suggest Souare’s pace and reading of the game could help improve a defence which has only kept five clean sheets this term.

Set to come in at 4.5 to 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Souare’s upcoming fixtures are fairly mixed. Palace face Leicester, Newcastle and QPR in the next six but also square up to Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton – as their Gameweek 21 win over Spurs showed, though, they are capable of prevailing.

Whether that form brings to defensive returns is debatable, though. Palace have yet to keep a clean sheet under Pardew’s stewardship, and with a more attacking approach being favoured, faith in the Eagles’ defence is low right now. In the final third, though, the 5.6-priced Jason Puncheon’s 23 points in three appearances highlights his turnaround since the new manager rolled up and he seems a more reliable option. With the likes of Patrick van Aanholt and Hector Bellerin offering great value in the budget defender bracket, Fantasy managers may well sit back and wait to see how Souare adapts to his new surroundings before the fixtures become more favourable from Gameweek 29.

Fab will be OK. Chadli takes as long as he needs, his father has just died. Sanchez is anyone's guess but Wenger won't help us much. Won't know until kick off Saturday.

Don't worry about Fab, he's fine. I would say your priorities are probably Bertrand, Chadli (as he has the blank soon anyway), and then Sanch.

    Finally done my WC team

    Foster | Myhill
    Azpi | Clyne | Bellerin | Naughton | PVA
    Haz | Caz | Oscar | Sterling | Walters
    Aguero | Giroud | Kane

Planning not to use any FT's until GW 27 when I will swap either Azpi or Oscar out for a 1 week punt (probably a United player) Bench that week would be Kane, Haz, Oscar/Azpi due to the blank. Walters would play in midfield at home to Hull, Naughton awat at Burnley and PVA away at Sunderland (only flaw in my plan)

Then in GW 28 I will have 2 FT's and bring in 1/2 Spurs players to go with Kane for the DGW or go with 1 spurs and get Oscar/Azpi back in for West Ham (A)

Obviously injuries and things can happen from now until GW27/28 but this seems a solid system. Thoughts?

Which of these.. It's for Ultimate FPL.. Need to get some Liverpool players in as they play a lot of Sundays/Mondays.

    A - Bertrand - Skrtel, Cattermole -> Henderson

    B - Keep Bertrand, Cattermole -> Sterling

A definitely adds better to my overall squad but feel it'd be dangerous not to have Sterling?

Arsenal has some very decent fixtures ahead, so I'm planning to bring in a 3th Arsenal player (currently on Sanchez and Giroud)

    A) Bellerin (I will bring in Sterling in the middfield then)
    B) Cazorla (I will bring in a 4.4 max defender in)

It's only until the double gamweek, Sanchez or Cazorla will have to go then, same as Giroud so I can bring Costa back in

I'd agree. But if Wenger comes out and says he's fit before Friday then he might get away with it. Little chance of this happening, though - even if he is fit I'd think he will 'officially' remain a doubt just to wind Pochettino up.

why do u think that? mane starting also culd mean
        mane - tadic - elia
        pelle

JWP will not be dropped IMO. Was Sot's main goal threat and looked sharp vs Swans.

Elia was bought as cover for Mane when he was of to ACON.
He may keep a spot with Saints injury list but only Koeman knows for sure. Enough doubt about his long term prospects for me to say that Punch is a far better option.

Gl with whatever you decide btw

Any chance of Wisom getting benched next week?
He was subbed on 61 mins.
Hopefully this was tactical as WBA were 2-0 down, and Craig Gardner a defensive midfielder was brought on.
WBA went 3-0 down soon after the substitution.

I've read some rumors on here that it could be the case for him next game.

Hope not. I was hoping to ride out the Bertrand suspension by playing Wisdom.

Is Eriksen and Kane just too much Spursness? their fixtures aren't too good, but Eriksen is bang on form, and kane is exceptional value for money.

Is Cahill ---> Kompany a solid long term transfer for my draft league?

      Avoid City defence imo, Karl.

This. Kompany especially has been poor. Living off his past reputation at the moment

Kompany is better than Cahill for sure but City defence is a bit rubbish and needs the breath of easy fixtures...Short term he's ok..

My issue is that I don't know if Cahill is going to play or not every week...atleast with Kompany I know he'll play and they do have a strong fixture list

That's the problem...I got him on my WC but had to ditch him. Kompany is one of the worst buys in the game for value so he's a real risk...

            RMT likes him 😉

Mines a draft league and premium defenders to come up often!

Rather punchy given the other 7, but would you start Ayoze (STO) this week if ShawX is confirmed out?

RMT tool has him above Santi & Sanchez 😯

    Silva (HUL)
    Hazard (avl)
    Oscar (avl)
    Sanchez (tot)
    Santi (tot)
    Aguero (HUL)
    Kane (ARS)
    Ayoze (STO)

I expect him to start - should get confirmed in Wenger's presser

I doubt Wenger will show his hand that early. But I do expect him to be back.

The reason you presumably have Ayoze is to play 352 and make sure of no benching headaches.
      Gotta leave him there imo.
PS I'm in the same situation with Colback but 1st sub he is

Yeah, have to bench him I guess, although I fear it could be decent points against a weakened, leaky STO defence.

Yep. I'm expecting some points from Colback but I just cant drop anyone else either.
Better than having some guaranteed 2 pointer on your bench though

If his shooting wasn't so powderpuff then he would be straight in my team. I have him in the yahoo version of fantasy football an he is the bollocks 😀
