Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

    Hi guys,

January WC already played, looking to improve team. Assuming I'm holding Sanchez if likely to return for LEI, I'm looking to ship Downing (maybe):

    Pantilimon Hamer
    Terry Clyne Hutton PvA Baird
    Sanchez Hazard Downing AdM Boyd
    Aguero Giroud Kane

    1FT, £2.8 itb

    Looking at the following:

    a) Downing -> Silva
    b) Downing -> Sterling
    c) Downing -> Cazorla
    d) Barid -> Bellerin
    e) hold

    Thoughts and comments appreciated!

    what is the

        c) feels a bit knee-jerky though, but and with three Arsenal attacking players that would mean shipping one of them (Gru or Sanchez depending on injury) after LEI. Leaning towards a) or b) atm

Did I miss something? Why do you have to ship an Arsenal player after Leic game?

Arsenal attackers are good for the rest of the season imo

Debatable, but could work out. They won't score 5 each game though, and Walcott and Øzil might steal a few of the attacking points too. That being said, I'm not in the coverage camp, rather look at total points per individual player regardless. THat's why Gru may have to go in a few GW's

Decided to search up the Coutinho goal seeing as all my Liverpool Facebook friends were absolutely raving about it.

Not sure what the big deal is, I thought he'd ran the pitch, beaten 8 players and chipped the keeper the way they were going on.

I think the answer should be none and instead to look at Sturridge once he gets back his match fitness. Coutinho is too hot and cold and his finishing is really questionable. Sterling on the other hand is doing well but I do see him being pushed to the wing once Sturridge is back.

It's a big risk, if Arse blank then you're looking at a terrible GW most likely.

Is Chadli out? Of the options, Oscar has good fixtures, Sterling has good form. I wouldn't consider the others. I mean, how many penalties is Cazorla going to get?

If Chadli's not out I'd be more inclined to shift Sanchez myself, maybe for Ozil. Or Cazorla if you prefer.

Chadli is not out but he has tricky fixtures before their blank, unfortunately I'm 0.3m off swapping for Silva, but considering a 4 point hit to get him in. I'm happy to keep Sanchez if he misses one more game considering they have LEI at home next.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 10 Years
              10 years, 10 months ago

Yep, Spurs fixtures look much better from GW 28 onwards. But they will also have EL to contend with. The good thing is that if you get 2-3 Spurs in for the DGW there will be no rush to remove them.

Re. Sanchez, you probably know that the teamsheets are in before the GW 25 FPL deadline. If you keep Sanchez and he doesn't play this weekend you'd have a chance to remove him if he isn't in the team v Leicester.

For myself I didn't want to carry an injury doubt on my wildcard and I think Sanchez' value has gone anyway with Walcott and Ozil back. So he went out last week on wildcard.

Find it hard to think he will usurp Rangel long term though. Ideally want someone nailed on and avoid spending FT on defenders. But will consider!

That is pretty much my DF and one thing I will say is that rotation sucks (I benched PVA last week 🙁 )

Nice team all the same though

Yea...rotation for front 8 is worse though. Benched 20 points over 3 GWs benching Sigurdsson, Bony and Siggy again.

    Hi all

been away for a few days, any news on Sanchez? Not too fussed if he is out again because that makes my benching decision a lot easier.

1FT, anything stick out? Subs in right order?

    Krul
    Baird, Ivan, Clyne
    Haz, Caz, ADM, Punch
    Kane, Giroud, Kun

    (Foster, PvA, Wolls, Sanchez)

There's a half-report going around that Arsenal have had a 'double injury boost' in Welbeck being back and Sanchez being almost there. Not sure about double boost, doesn't even sound like a single boost to me.

Nice to see you again, been away for awhile myself. But looks like you've done much better since we last chat haha.

Good team there - save esp if you just played WC last GW. I would just play Sanchez. He either starts or doesn't at all given the options they have at the moment. You'd want him if he starts.

Can you guys please help me with my transfer dilemma?

    Krul - Panti
    Terry - Clyne - Wisdom - PVA - Jones
    Walcott - Hazard - Johnson - ADM - Boyd
    Aguero - Giroud - Berahino

Have 1FT and 2.8 itb. Initial plan was to swap Walcott out for Sanchez but now a little confused. Help?

ADM's fixtures are so tantalising it's hard, even though it's torture hoping for points from him.

Opinions divided, mostly based on the belief that either ADM will eventually come good, or that he won't.

I had a look on RMT and for the next 4 matches (which I chose because it's 2 home, 2 away games for both and I'll most probably want to change to a Spurs midfielder after) has it marginally in the favour of ADM (apologies for giving away a snippet of member stats - 17.19 to 16.77 points), But FFF has the same period massively in Silva's favour - 31.9 points to 23.0 - effectively more than 2 pts per week. Who's going to be closer?

If you have 2 FTs and no other concerns then yes, otherwise just hold on to ADM and monitor.

I'm holding Di Maria. I think his lack of end product has something to do with him coming back from injury and the system not suiting him too.

But he looked very promising last game and so I'm holding (and praying he comes good)

Planning ahead. Is Kane and Eriksen only players worth having from Spurs and Qpr when they have dgw? Not sure about Austin.

Austin has the home game thing going for him, but QPR have looked absolutely woeful. Though they might get more desperate now and just go balls out in attack.

It doesn't really affect the forwards. You can bench the defender.

Yep Kane and Eriksen only good options from Spurs and don't like Austin. Of course things can change by the tie we reach the dgw.

i wonder if this sanchez doubt is just a great opportunity for me to back out of the oscar approach to chelsea attacking points. sanchez => hazard. then next week, bertrand to bellerin to afford caz/oscar/sterling back to sanchez if he makes the leicester match, knowledge of which will be available prior to the deadline
    going hazard-free is risky business

Bit of a contradiction in the last line there. 🙂 But yeah, I would. You will want Hazard for the dgw anyway so may as well get him now.

2.7 ITB - 1FT - No idea what to do!

    Foster - Hamer
    Jones - Fonte - Moreno - PVA - Wasi
    Haz - Sanchez - ADM - Punch - Boyd
    Aguero - Gru - Kane

    Chelsea defender in?

Not great on paper but Liverpool have their confidence back and with Sturridge returning as well, Coutinho might be a decent punt.

Very likely. Jose thinks he's finding his form again and he needs a run of games.

I don't think you'll see Cesc back in FPL till GW 26.
