A dire Gameweek 29 limps to its conclusion this evening as Swansea and Liverpool go head-to-head at the Liberty. Brendan Rodgers returns to his former club having guided the Reds to a 12-match unbeaten run since moving to a 3-4-2-1 formation and the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge have the chance to get amongst the points against a defence with a single shut-out in six in front of their own fans.

At the back, the visitors have been a consistent source of clean sheets in recent matches. The Merseysiders have kept out their opponents in six of the last eight Gameweeks and have Martin Skrtel available after the Slovakian recovered from a head knock that forced him off on a stretcher against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup stalemate last time out. Mamadou Sakho also returns as one of three centre-backs as Dejan Lovren drops to the bench. Rodgers has made further changes in the wing-back roles, with Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic dropping to the bench: Alberto Moreno is recalled on the left while Raheem Sterling looks to be deployed on the right.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 loss at Spurs in Gameweek 28. Prior to that defeat, Garry Monk’s men had registered back-to-back victories and earned three points in their previous match at the Liberty, courtesy of a 2-1 win over United.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in the goals last time out and has the upcoming fixtures to earn himself a place in our five-man midfields again, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung has notched three times in the last five and, at 5.1 in FPL, is staking a claim as a cheap budget option.

The teamsheet finds Monk forced into one change as Jordi Amat comes in for Federico Fernández who misses out for family reasons. Up front, Bafetimbi Gomis is available to lead the line after recovering from his collapse at White Hart Lane in the previous Gameweek.

  3. Will Leicester Out Fox Kane?

Hey DZ, anyone here planning on captaining Kane?

I posted this last night, might interest a few of you...

Since Leicester reverted to playing with 5 at the back in GW25, they conceded to...

    - Walcott and Koscielny
    - Sinclair and Bacuna (FA Cup)
    - Naismith and Upson (OG)
    - Silva and Milner
    - And kept a clean sheet against Hull

Small sample size I know, but what do these results show? No goals conceded to strikers, namely Giroud, Lukaku, Aguero, Bony, N'doye and Jelavic. Playing with 3 central defenders is clearly diminishing the impact of opposition strikers, limiting their space and increasing Leicester's chance of blocking their shots. When you add in the fact that Spurs have played a huge amount of games recently, tiredness was clearly evident in yesterday's game, and they have a tendency to be inconsistent against 'weak' teams at home, that rules out the Hurrikane as a captain contender this week for me.

I was about to captain Kane. But still not settled on it I guess. Will wait till Sunday to make my final call. It would be either Giroud / Kane / Aguero. Don't see myself picking anyone else. I think that Spurs would have to bounce back ASAP and they could do so vs Leicester

Aguero has played 6 early kick offs this season, has blanked in one, scored 6 goals and 3 assists.

THAT Spurs game was an early kick off.

Their form is a worry, the kick off time is not.

Yeah. Also off form Kun is up against a solid WBA defence.

      Costa (c) clearly for me.

Giroud is good too. Without Colo, NEW played RB Janmaat as CB, DM Colback as winger, LW Guiterrez as DM. CM Sissoko as RB. it's called a festering pile of ****.

Yeah giroud is a great pick if he gets through the Monaco game. Newcastle are in tatters. Costa could be a very good differential captain as his ownership is still very low in the top 10k.

I think it's time to stop going with the best 'on paper' option from now on in any case. it's been fecked all season. the only time I remember where a big hitter delivered against weak opposition was Sanchez vs Burnley at home.

It's not only a small sample size, there are slightly more problems with this conclusion, that is the one striker that leads the line not scoring in a game is not particularly unlikely so five games without it happening isn't particularly significant.

Sorry Innsie, but this seems pretty ad hoc to me. I don't think Leicester are very good, and Kane is very good. Like you say, 5 games is such a small sample size, and I think your argument doesn't provide full context.

Giroud didn't start, it was Alexis up top (coming off an injury).
Upson's own goal against Everton came off a Lukaku header and he had 9(!) shots that day.
Benteke also had 9 shots, and an assist.
Jelly man and Ndoye had 4 and 3 shots respectively.
      Kun had only 2 shots.

Ultimately, I think the shot numbers show that Leicester aren't doing a great job of limiting opposing strikers' opportunities, so I wouldn't count Kane out based on the last 5 games. That said, I'm probably going Kun. Form has been patchy, but I still think he's the best striker in the league by far.

        • 15 Years

PS: 3 of Lukaku's shots were blocked, dunno about Benteke because ESPN's FA Cup coverage isn't great, and none of Jelavic's were. I guess you could be right, and the back 3 could be limiting strikers' space and they haven't been good shots, but in general, more shots means more goals.

    Any maths experts here?

Just thinking in regards to captain choice. I will try to explain my muddled thinking the best i can.

Giroud is on a fine run of goal scoring 4 in 4. Does there come a point where because of this run he less likely to score next match? obviously this run cant continue as you would be looking at a striker getting 38 in 38. Say this run went on to 7 goals on 7 games. Surely the probability of him scoring is low the next game?

This may make no sense at all and i own Giround by the way. I have the phrases probability and diminishnig returns in my head but they too may be wrong

Hi sab, it's a question of dependence. If his performance in the next game is directly related - dependent - on performance in prior tmes then you can infer some contingent probability. However, assuming enough time and space between the events you could say they are independent, and he is just as likely in the next as the previous.

If you're really interested in stats check out 'random walk' - outcomes from many cumulative random distributions tend to pile up in lumps... Which is part of the reason why football players have runs of good form,

Actually, there is a huge variable which links performance over time - confidence. I think giroud is more likely to score in the next game if he scored in the last. A couple of unlucky weeks and his confidence will drop, and he'll have a lower probability of scoring

          1. Joggers Nipple

Ok, again this may interest nobody.

4 strikers. The longest any of them have gone without a goal and or an assist is 2 weeks in a row. All have done it once, Giroud twice. None have gone 3 weeks with
a goal or an assist. Does pattern this mean Aguero is due?

(Only games where they play 45 mins or more include, please excuse any typos, eyes going a bit crossed)

            Costa- g,g,gg,ggg,0,g,g,0,g,g,0,0,g,0,ga,0,g,g

            Aguero- 0,g,0,g,g,gggg,0,g,gg,aa,gga,0,a,a,gg,ga,a,gg,0,0

Yes it does, according to the baseball theory I put below. And I was going to captain him if he wasn't playing such a tight defence. Try to find pulis' stats versus Man city, if he does badly then you can captain aguero

Ultimately I think there needs to be statistical evidence to suggest a drop off in form and therefore a drop off in goals? What are his underlying stats suggesting? Likewise you could say the same thing for Aguero, what are his underlying stats suggest and does it possibly indicate explosion imminent? I see you aren't a member but I think a little digging here might give you another clue.

This is another good perspective imo - if he has a 100% conversion rate then it's very unlikely to continue - an example of underlying performance predicting a change. However, the stats can be misleading, particularly in the opposite direction - good underlying stats don't necessarily signal an imminent improvement

And I would second that last thought. Aguero is an interesting one. He had loads of shots in the last game but only got 1 on target. That indicates a lack of confidence.

The instances aren't linked. If you had giroud at 2 yards out the whole match where his teammates kept passing it to him, then he'd get 5 out of 5.

It's more of the baseball theory that you should be interested in. They play 162 games a year, and the numbers normally even them out in the end. A .300 hitter (3 in 10) will always be around that mark. If he starts off at .200 (which is terrible) he will raise it in the end.

Giroud in this form is a 20 goals a year man. He's upped his level

Thought something similar abt Kane, never really happen. I think regression can only be used when you look at shots accuracy or something like that. If a player is having, say 90% shots accuracy, we would expect his performance to regress as its very high.

Think about roulette. It lands on black 7 times in a row. Does this mean it is "due" to land on red next time? Or is it more likely to continue its black streak?

The chances are still 50/50 (taking green out of the equation).

With Giroud though, I'd agree with Kalmoffit. If anything, Giroud is in great form so I'd expect him to continue his goalscoring form.

You're right if they really are mutually exclusive events... Confidence (or lack of) can knock on into the future. So can injuries, media messages etc.

The purist answer to the question is giroud is not 'due', if each game is unrelated to the next.

Even the baseball theory isn't right - just because a player scored at a certain level last year doesn't mean they will this year, and will therefore 'catchup'. Players change (I give you exhibit 1: falcao)

Sahko scored 5 in 5, he was on form and quite lucky. giroud has been lucky to get 4 in 4, but he is in good form, in an attacking side, is higher level, he will continue to do well but will get a bit more unlucky as time goes on. Lol well that's my opinion.

I'm planning on writing a little poem for/about Doosra and I'd love to have some ideas from you lot about what to include in it. If you have any memories about players he likes, players he doesn't like, players he refuses to buy, stats tables that he puts a lot of emphasis on, his famous quotes and sayings, or anything else that you think is appropriate, then comment below. Cheers.

Jonty's dog went missing and he posted about it on here. Doos happened to know the area and suggested a few places to look, and lo and behold it was hanging out in one of the spots he mentioned!

His stats tables - links to members' tables posted (sometimes to non-members!) intended to help people pick Danny Welbeck..

Oh, I understand the mechanics behind it, I was more trying to characterise his postings.

          Something like:

How about mentioning Ironic Foundry, and West Ham winning the European Cup-Winners Cup in 1965 under the captaincy of Bobby Moore and supplying 3 players to the England World Cup-winning team the following year.

...Doos is a big fan of the Hammers, who are also sometimes called the Irons. Their greatest success was in 1965 when they became the first English team to win a European trophy. Their three players who played such a big part in England's World Cup victory in 1966 were of course Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.

Tea, the man is obsessed with tea and lots of it and not to mention the odd glass of vino!
He also has Irish blood running through his veins, he claimed the 'grannie' rule last year when I set up ' The Irish Contingent ' league on here last summer,
I one time changed my Grav to the winning picture of the teapot/cups/saucers/finest blend of teas that man has seen on winning the LAWR FA cup of tea in it's first season, he (and Ginkapo) got a good laugh out of that one-I'll dig out that Grav for you mate!

Reminder that the search for the Gameweek 30 Scout Pick champion starts today at 10am. Look out for the article in the community articles section from then.

Remember there's a £100 prize for the top Gameweek score of the season. Who thinks they can beat Innsie's Gwk 23 score of 73 pt?
