Here’s our regular update on the competition, featuring a look at the Matchday 3 games that took place over Gameweek 33. We also have some fun handing out some Matchday Awards and a look ahead to Matchday 4. Please use this article for all tournament chat.

MATCHDAY 3 RESULTS

The final Matchday 3 results have been updated in the Cup spreadsheet and we can reveal that after a hard-fought round, Bangladesh and South Africa top Groups A and B respectively.

In Group A, four teams are on four points apiece. One more win for any of those four teams will guarantee them a place in the knockouts. Scotland with two and Sri Lanka with no points may be lagging behind but are still very much in the race for qualification.

In Group B, South Africa and West Indies are through to the knockouts, courtesy of their unbeaten run. All the remaining four teams still stand a chance to take the remaining two knockouts spots.

Congratulations to all the victorious teams and a reminder to those that lost that everyone is still in this hunt for glory.

If Sri Lanka still win I'll be very impressed. Fenly's mishap is a huge disadvantage.

Close of Day 1, Test between South Africa and Ireland

Journo: Geoff, I'm here with Eunuch de Jelliers, who had one of the best seats in the house to watch his teammates take on a hungry and, I must admit, slightly jaundiced and twitchy Ireland team. Eunuch, you seemed surprisingly satisfied throughout today's proceedings, even though it would be hard to argue that your lot had the better of things.

EJ: Not sure I take your meaning. The boys looked great out there. The Gaffer had a plan and everyone played their part to the letter. Really proud of everyone for going out there and doing what we talked about. We know who we represent. Protea Fire!

Journo: Yes, well, I see of course, but you are a bit behind right now, and I wonder what you can tell us about why that is and how you feel about that?

EJ: Yeah, I'm not sure what you're getting at with this whole "behind" thing. We are South Africa--we are undefeated, we have scored the most runs in the group, and we're just, y'know, the better team, and you could clearly see that out there today. Protea Fire!

Journo: Well I suppose, I mean, not to put to fine a point on it, I'm interested in how you feel about scoring a lot less runs than Ireland did. They were, to put it bluntly, 34 runs ahead of you at stumps. Do you have any kind of reaction to that?

EJ: Look, I don't know what numbers you're looking at, but we are South Africa! We know who we represent! We strap on our pads, we go out and play South Africa cricket, we walk away with the win, and we get in the hot-tub and drink Manhattans. It's not rocket science.

Journo: Yes, but there is this matter of 34 . . .

    EJ: Protea Fire!

Journo: Indeed. I'd like to ask about that too. What exactly do you mean? I understand that you call yourselves the Proteas--after a flower, I think--but why is it always "Protea Fire"? I mean, are these flowers likely to catch on fire? Are you invoking some sort of South African racial memory of a conflagration of protea flowers? Because if so, from what I can tell they wouldn't burn very well, being more of a succulent than a . . .

EJ: Look: we know who we represent! We are Proteas, and we have fire! We bring that fire into our play, and burn through the competition! Can't you get it? It's a metaphor for our spirit and our unstoppable momentum!

Journo: Well that brings us pretty much full circle, because Ireland seem to have come up with some kind of asbestos or other fire retardant metaphor that kept you 34 runs behind. Can you comment on that?

EJ: Look, friend, you don't know what you're talking about with these "runs". We are the most unstoppable force in group B--we play, we win, we mock the West Indies, we have a party. What part of this do you not get?!? Gink put the armband on Skrtel--does that help you understand what "Protea Fire" is all about? What do I care how many runs "Ireland" scores?

Journo: I'm beginning to see why the manager of the West Indies, the Shadow, claims that you and your teammates are not particularly good at maths (although he quite deplorably employs the quaint Americanism, "math"). You don't seem at all troubled by, or even to achieve any meaningful cognition of, the fact that that you are losing the match by 34 . . .

EJ: We know who we represent! Protea Fire! You can take your "cognition" and your "runs" and . . . and . . . why don't you ask Mr Shadow how many "runs" they have, huh? I'm sure they'd like to talk about your stupid metaphors . . and another thing: I don't think shamrocks burn any better than proteas do, so you can ask Ireland what kind of fire they have, and . . .

Journo: Mr De Jelliers, I'm very sorry, we seem to have run out of time and . . .

    EJ: Protea Fire!

Journo: Ladies and gentlemen that was Mr Eunuch de Jelliers of the "unstoppable" South African. . .

EJ: We know who we represent!

    Journo: . . . cricket team, who must overcome a 34-point deficit to Ireland . . .

EJ: You're a deficit! Protea Fire!

Journo: And we look forward to the next day's . . .

EJ: Shut up! We will burn like an unstoppable fire of really, really dry protea-flowers through . . .

Journo: Back to you Geoff. . .

    #ProteaFire

Haha. I've just been watching 'Synecdoche New York', which contains the 'burning house' motif:
      - Hazel, to the Estate Agent: "I like it, I do. But I'm really concerned about dying in the fire..."
She still moves in. I thought maybe 'Protea Fire' might also be some kind of allegorical device symbolic of poor choices and impending doom?

    Trans-Tasman Day 1 Match Scorecard

Australia lead by 25 points with the following differentials still to bat:
    4x Skrtel
    2x Sterling, Terry
1x Courtois, Baines, N'Doye, Harper, Schlupp, Ulloa

Yet to bat for New Zealand:
    3x Mignolet
    2x Fabregas
1x Costa, Giroud, McShane, Moreno, Young, Smalling

This looks like a big win for the aussies barring a Costa/Fabregas based miracle for the all-blacks

So, more or less, today is the nervy day when the Chelskis begin their double, and New Zealand shoots its single game week load of Giroud, Young & Smalling (vs. our Bainesy & De Gea).

      *after today*

      Australia
      4 x Skrtel
      2 x Sterling, Terry
      1 x Courtois, N'Doye, Harper, Schlupp, Ulloa

      New Zealand
      3 x Mignolet
      2 x Coutinho
      2 x Fabregas
      1 x Costa, McShane, Moreno

Albeit optimistic, it looks to me like this will come down to the Chelsea-Leicester game on Wednesday when its a not so simple...

      Australia: 1 x Courtois, 2 x Terry, 1 x Schlupp, 1 x Ulloa
      vs
      New Zeland: 2 x Fabregas, 1 x Costa

      * PLUS the questions of if Schlupp & Moreno don't play the second match, who the subs are (on a scale of Austin to Pelle 😉

Our autosubs look in great shape too, but an Arsenal annihilation of Chelsea could do them wonders

        Aus autosubs:

        Schlupp: Kane(5) PVA (2)
        Moreno: Wasilewski(6 + CHE), Duff(2)

        NZ autosubs:

        Schlupp: Silva (1)
Moreno: Bellerin, Giroud, Ramsey (all CHE)

scrap all of theirs. its PVA/Smalling/McShane over Silva/Ramsey/Giroud. didnt take into account valid formations. Our Kane still stands as Schlupp is 4th defender.

You guys clearly didn't read EJ's interview.

we are South Africa! We know who we represent! We strap on our pads, we go out and play South Africa cricket, we walk away with the win, and we get in the hot-tub and drink Manhattans. It's not rocket science.

Now I'll admit I haven't worked out the points or differentials because maths and looking is for nerds. But I'm pretty sure we still have this wrapped up. I mean history shows we can't be beaten, we are literally unbeaten... As in we have had no beatens. I'm sure the Irish will fade going into the second day once their sunburn and liver disease kicks in.
