Having narrowly finished second to champions Manchester City in 2013/14, Liverpool’s prospects were dealt a bitter blow last summer after 31-goal Luis Suarez was snapped up by Barcelona. With the Uruguayan gone, and Daniel Sturridge restricted to seven starts due to injuries, it was a season to forget for Brendan Rodgers’ outfit.

In our latest articles for members, we cast an eye over the Merseysiders, assessing their main goal threats and chief creators in the first year of the post-Suarez era.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

don't mean to dampen Liverpool fans spirits but I remember everyone thinking the brilliantly talented robihno was gonna be a big success at city and elano was also a talented playmaker who only showed flashes of brilliance at city. of course on the other hand firmino could end up better than coutihno

He's young and apparently a bit consistent, has to be given time, but hopefully he turns out alright.

Every transfer has the potential to fail, but Firmino is one of the best players Pool have signed in recent memory.

I must admit I don't like to start with new players to the EPL but if Firmino is classified as a midfielder for 9.5m or under he is straight in my team. I think he will adapt to the premier league really well as he is an industrias forward like Suarez and Sanchez.

Our fixtures are atrocious. Even the good ones are ruined by Europa League games 3 days before.

I'm a United fan so I'm sure people will say it's only because he's going to Liverpool after rumours of him coming to us but, if Firmino is good enough for a top team, why hasn't Bayern or even Dortmund made a move? There's not even been rumours really. Usually Bundesliga talent is snatched up by Bayern, or at least rumoured to be, such as Neuer, Gotze, Lewandoski etc so why haven't they made a move for Firmino? Is he not all that some people have bigged him up to be or is it just that Bayern prefer the possibility of De Bruyne, going by the rumours?

To be fair, I know nothing about Firmino, I'm just interested seen as he's been performing in the bundesliga a few years!

I mentioned on the last page his release clause which can be enforced in Germany is supposedly really low, so they wanted to sell him abroad knowing it was now bound to happen, the issue with City was they couldn't move very fast due to FFP and couldn't guarantee him playing time which he wanted. Make of it what you will.

I guess, but a release clause is a relsease clause at the end of the day, surely thats more of a reason Bayern could have swooped in, had he been of a high enough standard/quality, no?

I'm not sure to be honest, a club will never just snap up talent they don't need for the sake of it, at least you would hope not.

No matter how rated or unrated a player is it's difficult to judge how he'll do in another country's league until he's had a good run of games there.Forlan flopped for United but thrived in Spain. Shevchenko was poor at Chelsea. Suarez and Aguero bring their class everywhere. Difficult to predict who'll succeed or fail until they've kicked a ball for the club.

Indeed, can be a lot easier to expect he'll fit in though due to the Bundesliga being a good physical league, and him being young.

You can expect it, but better to judge him at least after a few months of Premier League games. I remember being excited at the prospects of Aquilani. Saw him play v Fiorentina. The promise was never kept.

But the question remains: if the low release clause can be enforced in Germany, why didn't any bigger German side, say Dortmund or Bayern, trigger that clause?

Well, to be fair, Bayern have been constantly linked to the likes of Griezmann & de Bruyne recently. Maybe that's why? 🙂

Wouldn't say he is as proven as Suarez, I knew all about Suarez before he joined yet I don't follow the Eredivisie too closely, however I'd never heard of Firmino till the build up to this transfer window

He's very good, but not world class, and possibly best as a big fish in a small pond. Also, Bayern tend not to play with a number ten, and they have Goetze and Muller should they choose to. Dortmund are also very well stocked in that position with Kagawa and Mkhitaryan, whilst Reus and Gundogan are also more than capable there.

      1. Big4FPL
        • 11 Years

That's a fair point about Dortmund but Bayern are being strongly linked with De Bruyne so would you say he is better/worse than De Bruyne? Because although De Bruyne never really got a fair shot imo, he didn't do himself much justice in the prem so is Firmino likely to be similar? Only asking as I've never seen him play and highlights videos can be misleading!

I dont think anyone would claim he is better than KDB. But still a good player, especially for Pool.

Not as intelligent, consistent or creative as De Bruyne, but a bit more clinical and capable of the spectacular. Firmino will be more suited to the Premier League IMO, has that bit more physicality about him, but would say De Bruyne is the better player - though I think he'll be wasted at Bayern, like he was at Chelsea.

Okay, cheers for that, I've never watched Firmino but I've watched a fair bit of De Bruyne so the comparisons useful! I agree about Bayern, probably won't put them off making a move if he becamd available though!

de bryne to Bayern would probably mean one of lewandowski, ribery, muller, goetze would be on there way out coz it would be hard to cram them all in alongside robben. that's why I can see de bryne going to city as a number 10 behind aguero.

it's a good point you make though. if he was that good, wouldn't a champions league team be in for him?

      1. Big4FPL

Thats a fair point although Guardiola hasnt really fancied Gotze too much this season! Exactly, if he's such a talent CL is surely a minimum, look at Depay for example, is Firmino as rated as much of a potential talent as him? Considering Depay was also playing in a less competitive league also

        1. MADCHESTER UTD

depay looks class. will be interesting to see whether rooney lets him have the free kicks. isn't firmino supposed to be lightweight? could struggle to make a massive impact in the prem like how kagawa was player of the year in bundesliga before his utd move but didn't really dominate

Yeah, I'm really excited about Depay, and Rooneys got to let him have freekicks after some of the efforts he scored last season!:O I don't know much about him, but yeah he could be similar to Kagawa, he was unreal for Dortmund but didn't really show it often enough for us

yeah I thought that too that sterling was nailed on to leave this summer. though on talksport earlier there transfer expert said he doesn't expect city to up there bid for sterling, meaning he could stay put (assuming arsenal, real Madrid etc don't pay what Liverpool want) If I was I was rogers I'd say to city "give us bony as part of the sterling deal" (the player rogers shouldve got in as soon as suarez left

Its very difficult to know at this point how good Firmino will be in the Premier League. Who would have predicted that Di Maria, one of the best players in the world the previous year would become such a flop. Not picking on United, all clubs have similar experiences. I thought Mangala would have done a lot more in his first season than he did. Likewise all clubs have their over achieving players who would never have thought the players would turn out to be as good as they did. For example Negredo in his first six months was immense at City. So we can speculate all we want but until well into the season we wont know how good or bad Firmino is for Liverpool.

agreed. I thought soldado would get bags of goals for spurs and I remember when utd got kagawa the same time as Chelsea got hazard. there were big debates over who would be the bigger success and again I remember thinking bundesliga player of the year kagawa would shine for utd, which he didn't do (aside from that Norwich hat trick). hardly any transfers are dead certs to be a massive success, except the elite of the elite players

Even with the very elite, some may not suit the system or the style of the league. Makes it frustrating for the fans when players dont live up to the expectations when such large amounts of money are paid for them.

Falcao being a good case in point. He wasn't just not as good as we thought he was actually rubbish,...and isn't doing any better at the Copa..Torres>Chelsea being another, who thought he would bomb so much...and that was even in the same league...

I wasnt picking on United, there is no need to start a City versus United debate. All teams have players that fail to live up to expectations and players that far exceed them. Di Maria could have a great season this coming season and I will be keeping an eye on him for my fantasy football team.

Yeah it can be really hit and miss and the frustration will only keep increasing with transfer fees going up. For example if City buy Sterling for 50 million thats serious expectation ad pressure for a player that young which may affect his performances.

Spent most of the stirling fee on Firmino. Leaves about £10mil left over and maybe another 30 mil left to spend on clyne and Bacca. They will go for around 35 mil.

Dawson would probably have proven an awful buy for City. Success in one defensive system does not promise success in a completely different one, almost promises a failure.

i'll be a bit teed off if firmino ends up brilliant at Liverpool, especially as we were heavily linked with him a few weeks back. though we are already very strong in that number 10 position. I wouldn't worry too much though for utds spending this summer. that mega adidas deal has given LVG loads to spend and I think we will buy some really top players. 2 or 3 from ramos, Lloris, otamendi, sneiderlin, coleman, benzema, bacca, will carvalho, Miranda, gundogan, schweinsteiger, higuin and all the other players we've been linked with. did want utd to get cech though. we didn't get VDS till he was oldish and he was class for years for us

Clichy makes huge mistakes very often. I really don't rate him. And he is so useless in attack. He is in argue with cross and shot. Atleast Kolarov can do something in attack, and he is better for jump in defence, and is stronger. I would keep Kolarov, can fill up home grown quota with Lopes, Denayer, Kelechi.

Otamendi is world class CB, our CBs were awful sometimes last season. I would start with Kompany and Otamendi, Mangala and Denayer as back up. Sell Demichelis to NYC. No matter how good (or bad!) he is, club with those ambitions can't have Demichelis as one of the main CBs.

Mangala cost 30-40 million so wont be sold. Kompany as captain wont be sold. Demichelles just signed a contract for the coming year so looks like he is staying. He wont be fourth choice. I cant see where he fits in despite how good he is.

😆 Based on last season? All of them!

One of the form CBs in world football currently. Excellent in every aspect, and about five levels above Mangala/Demichelis. Comfortably ahead of Kompany too based on his last year and a half or so...

I agree 100% how good he is. But the problem is there isnt a space available for him this season. He would be brilliant to get in place of Demichelles the following season. Maybe loan out Denayar for the season and then have Denayar replace Demichelles the following season. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

de bryne, sterling, pogba, isco, wilshire are the names on the rumour mill but I think the big thing will be to keep aguero. got a feeling he will go back to spain soon

He will stay, I have no doubt. But our squad is so old. Yaya will be here max 1 year more, Silva max 3 years more. If u ask me, I would buy Otamendi, Bertrand, Song, Pogba/Wilshare, Walcott and Reus. Maybe Lacazette, but it's not so important.

yeah good shouts. Walcott and reus certainly would make city far more pacey than they are. I know navas is quick but not that great and as you say nasri, silva, yaya etc are all becoming a bit old. lacazette looks great but don't think he'd want limited time being behind aguero and bony in the pecking order with the euro's coming up next summer. got a feeling mangala is going to have a much better season this time round.

I would play Lacazette on left wing 🙂 If Otamendi doesn't sign for us, I really hope Mangala will come good. And there is fantastic Denayer.

Really don't know why they want Sterling so badly. We can get Walcott for half price less than Sterling. Reus/Auba would be just fantastic.

Reus would be perfect. Walcott would be good also. Not sure would I refer him or Sterling though.

Aguero seems happy in Manchester. Hopefully he will stay. He is so important to City. I wouldnt trade him for any player in the world. If City could sign even two or three of those players Id be delighted.

Walcott for navas, de bryne for nasri, song for milner, sterling as a long term replacement for silva would be a start. think pogba will wait for either barca or real Madrid. think reus is waiting to see how bale gets on at real Madrid this season. he knows that if bale has a hard time again then Madrid will come calling in January. I also think sissoko at Newcastle will have the big teams looking at him if he has a good season

            Prefer Schneiderlin than Sissoko.

            Hart (Caballero, Wright/Gunn)
Zaba (Bertrand) - Kompany (Denayer) - Otamendi (Mangala) - Bertrand (Kolarov)
            Yaya (Pogba/Wilshare) - Fernandinho (Song)
            Sterling/Walcott (Navas) - Silva (KDB/Fekir/Wilshare) - Reus/Auba (Silva)
            Aguero (Bony, Sterling/Walcott, Kelechi)

Thats a seriously strong team. Would be brilliant if City started the season with this team.

Id love to get Pogba but hard to see it. Reus would a serious addition. Walcott, De Bryune and Song would all be good additions also.
