After numerous weeks of speculation, Chelsea finally announced the season-long loan acquisition of Radamel Falcao from French outfit Monaco last Friday.

Prior to the agreement, Jose Mourinho confirmed he was keen to bring the Colombian to Stamford Bridge in spite of a disastrous temporary spell at Old Trafford last term:

“If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it. It hurts me that people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United.”

The History

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Falcao started out at second division side Lanceros Boyaca, earning his senior debut for the club at the age of 13. He spent two seasons at the Tunja-based club, netting one goal in eight matches. Falcao then moved to Argentina to sign for top tier outfit River Plate in February 2001.

After being handed his first start for the full squad in in the 2005/06 season, Falcao went on to notch seven goals in 11 appearances. Ligament damage to Falcao’s right knee restricted him to just 20 league appearances (1033 minutes) in the following campaign, yet the clinical Colombian recovered to chalk up 24 league goals and five assists across the subsequent two campaigns.

Falcao then plotted a course to Europe, penning a deal with Porto for a €4 million fee. He finished his first season at the Dragons as the league’s second-highest scorer, registering 25 goals and seven assists in 28 league outings. The next campaign proved to be similarly profitable, as Falcao tallied 16 goals and four assists in 22 league outings while also setting a new record for goals (17) in the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid paid €40 million to sign Falcao in the summer of 2011, making him the club’s record transfer. He enjoyed two hugely successful campaigns with Rojiblancos, recording 52 goals and five assists in 68 outings, and scooping two trophies (Europa League and Copa del Rey).

Falcao chose to sign for Monaco in May 2013, yet his debut season in Ligue 1 was hamstrung by thigh and knee injuries, meaning he only mustered nine goals in 17 league outings. After sitting out six months of action with a knee complaint, Falcao played in the first three fixtures of the 2014/15 campaign, before Manchester United snapped him up on a £6 million loan deal. He struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, bagging four goals and five assists in 26 appearances (14 starts).

On the international stage, Falcao has registered 25 goals in 61 appearances and recently became his country’s highest-ever scorer after netting in a friendly against Costa Rica last month.

The Prospects

Given that Mourinho started every league match last season with a 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s fair to say that the Blues’ new striker faces a tough task to nail down a regular role over the campaign ahead.

Clearly, Diego Costa – who finished third in the scoring charts (20 goals) despite his injury travails – will remain as the first-choice frontman, limiting Falcao’s opportunities. Nonetheless, Costa’s ongoing hamstring issues and penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is an issue that his manager has to address.

Costa started just 24 league outings last term (missing eight matches through injury and four through suspension) allowed Didier Drogba and Loic Remy to earn eight and six league starts respectively. With Drogba now gone, it’s no surprise that Mourinho delved into the market to acquire a quality back-up in his pursuit of consecutive titles.

With the likes of Palace and West Ham linked with a move for Remy, Mourinho’s shopping spree could well continue, with the Blues reportedly keen on Charlie Austin as a replacement should the Frenchman depart. Either way, it seems likely that Falcao will start the season as Chelsea’s third-choice forward, with minutes off the bench the likeliest scenario over the initial stages, at least.

If Falcao does find some rhythm, it would certainly afford Mourinho the luxury of exercising more caution with Costa’s minutes. Should that be the case, Eden Hazard’s claims as the prime route into Chelsea’s attack would be strengthened further, given that PFA Player of the Year started every league match for the champions in 2014/15.

Although the calibre of Chelsea’s top Fantasy assets renders them almost fixture proof, it’s worth nothing that the London club face a tough start to the new campaign. Beyond a home opener against Swansea City, Mourinho’s troops embark on a challenging road schedule (mci, wba, eve) and a visit from Arsenal within the first six Gameweeks. It’s unlikely to discourage investment in Chelsea’s big-hitters, though, particularly when other high-priced recruits like Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have question marks against their availability for Gameweek 1 by virtue of their involvement in the final of the Copa America.

Dexter and Breaking Bad are good. But brace yourself for a huge final season disappointment re Dexter. Suits is average- watchable but not great.

Apart from Breaking Bad and Dexter of course, I would recommend some which I absolutely loved:

      Some comedy mixed thriller:
Hustle (one of my all time favorites)
      White collar

Some drama/thriller (last three are kinda dark but I absolutely loved them):
      Justified
      Banshee
      Fargo

To be honest, I found Suits a bit annoying..it was like there were only 5-6 characters in the whole office and apart from them, everyone else is so plain dumb in that office (and they recruit the best of the best from Harvard)

That was weird. Did anyone else see that?

I was putting in my details again into the FPL site and a 2015/2016 landing page appeared afterwards.

I thought it had gone live and some players on a watch list with a price (Aguero 14m, Haz 12m and someone else maybe Rooney for 10m but was listed as a midfielder)

I went to the register button but it took me back to the old 2014/15 page and I can't get it back (I even pressed back and refreshed) . Is it open now?

    (Warning - long post).

There has already been some fantastic research and analysis into defensive rotations, and whilst I'm sure people don't want to be saturated with information on the topic, I thought I'd share my own research in case anyone found it to be useful.

    ***

Before getting down to the findings, a quick word on methodology.

My starting point was the season ticker in the members area, set using the clean sheets category. I only went up to GW21, as it is around this time that the winter wildcard is available (at which point it is feasible that managers could completely change their goalkeepers and defenders, which would necessitate a fresh rotation analysis for the remainder of the season).

My approach was then pretty much binary - every fixture which was blue (i.e. somewhat easy to very easy) was assigned a number 1; every fixture which was grey (i.e. neutral) or red (i.e. somewhat difficult to very difficult) was assigned a 0.

I decided to approach rotation on a fixture-difficulty basis rather than a home/away basis for two reasons: 1) this has always been my preferred approach, on the grounds that a weak team playing at home against a strong team does not necessarily have a better chance of getting a clean sheet than a strong team playing away against a weak team, and 2) the home/away element is already factored into the fixture difficulty rating on the season ticker anyway.

I then went through the data on a team-by-team basis. For each difficult fixture (i.e. a number 0) I looked for all the teams that had a corresponding easy fixture (i.e. a number 1). Once I had gone through all of a given team's difficult fixtures, I then totted up the number of times each of the other 19 teams in the league had a corresponding easy fixture. This enabled me to see, for each team, which other teams rotated best on a fixture-difficulty basis.

    ***

    Below are my findings.

Please note that, rather than listing the teams alphabetically, teams are listed by overall ease/difficulty of fixtures up to GW21. Therefore, if you are able to find rotation between two teams in the upper half of the table, you will not only have a good rotation, but kinder fixtures overall.

Great stuff. Rotation usually works best when looking to rotate cheaper options though so maybe focus on those teams. With ManU or Man City for example Fantasy managers are unlikely to rotate their players. Same with Chelsea. So for Watford I'd narrow that down to

      WATFORD

Best rotations - SOT, SWA, AVL, NEW

and so on for the rest.

Yep, could be handy to be complete as well if there are injuries and a 4.5m gem emerges at a top team (eg Bellerin last year).

Interesting thought. I would say that top team defenders shouldn't be rotated because they're 'fixture proof' though, not because they're expensive.

Yep, home and away rotation only works for certain teams....most of the time fixture difficulty is key.

Stoke for example are much better at home.

QPR last year was another example. But often teams are either good or bad home and away.

    8. Bastien
      • 13 Years

In my opinion, it is worth looking for rotation matches only at teams that can offer nailed on options at 5.0 and below. Not the case for the top teams.
If I'd spend 5.5+ on a defender (at the beginning of the season) I'd want to play him every week.

      But again, great work.

Agreed - as in my reply to Jonty above, I included everything for the sake of completeness, but I imagine most people will be focusing solely on the mid-to-lower rung teams.

Great work. Is it purely worked upon the idea of favourable fixtures from the members area as with SOU and NEW im quite sure they play che and mcy respectively on GW8

      1. Jay_

That's what just confused me but I'm assuming going up to gw21 Krul will cover Stek in most of Saints games after gw8 with that week just being a bad week

No worries. Was looking at a similar thing myself on my spreadsheet, especially looking into how dropping big hitters for better fixtures (e.g. cech against chelsea benched for myhill against norwich)

Problem with basing analysis on clean sheets is they rely so much on luck.
My own fesearch ggoing back to 1993 shows that they vary wildly from season to season.

So much so that it is actually better to choose the three worst performing from the previous season (that were not relegated) than the average/ poor teams that managed to keep more clean sheets

Not only will the players from the teams that kept more clean sheets be more expensive, its also tprare for them to achieve the same result the following season.
While the teams that performed worse have cheaper players and tend to tighten up defensively the following season

      OK. Here's one.

You are assigning fixtures too high an importance; moreover, you are not accounting for home advantage properly, in my view.

Therefore, it all becomes too complicated.

        Appreciate the input Doos.

I don't know the process behind the season ticker, but my assumption was that away fixtures are rated as more difficult than home fixtures? If this is the case, the home/away is indirectly factored into my analysis, no?

        1. JCSkala
          • 14 Years
          11 years, 9 days ago

Yes the home/away fixtures have had some consideration although clean sheets have a greater skew to home ties rather than how favoured the team is for the match

In relation to the Hulked post above...
Has anyone ever gone back & re-examined the accuracy of our pre-season predictions regarding the *best rotations*?

Reason I ask is, last year some were considering a double up on United defenders due to their favourable sched.

I know I drank the Pochettino Kool Aid & had a Tottenham defender in my GW1 side.

Clearly, finding rotating pairs is a viable strat. in this game but, how good are we at actually predicting who they'll be ahead of time?

    JRod is on for Saints

In a genius maneuver they've also brought on Little and Wood

Is Buttler and Ali the best 7&8 batting combo in test cricket since Gilcrhist and Warne ?

I'm seeing a lotta love for Southampton players. Defence in particular. I think they're going to struggle initially with no Forster, Clyne, Alderweireld, Bertrand and potentially Schneiderlin. Fixture list looks fairly kind over first half of the season though. What's the consensus?? Can Fonte hold it together himself??

Most of soton's defence comes from the tactics of koeman so they could still be good

Morgan Schneiderlin travelled with #SaintsFC on their pre-season trip to Austria, but the #MUFC target is not in squad v RB Leipzig tonight.
