Our pre-season coverage continues with details of a busy Saturday schedule, which saw the likes of Kevin Mirallas, Dwight Gayle and Cameron Jerome hit the goal trail.

A reminder that we’re collating all the pre-season action via a dedicated section here.

Barnet 3 Crystal Palace 5

Crystal Palace kicked off their pre-season campaign with an end-to-end clash at The Hive Stadium. Dwight Gayle – who played a peripheral role last term, managing just 11 starts and 1096 minutes – delivered a statement of intent to manager Alan Pardew, bagging a hat-trick within 50 minutes. Gayle has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, with several clubs, including Bournemouth, circling. A strong pre-season could force a rethink, with Gayle threatening Glenn Murray’s start in attack, or more likely competing for one of the wide roles in a 4-2-3-1.

Pardew’s lineup at Barnet was made up of mostly of senior players, with Murray, Gayle and Jason Puncheon fronting the attack. There was an experienced back four in front of Julian Speroni, comprised of Joel Ward and Martin Kelly at full-back, with Damien Delaney and Brede Hangeland in central defence. Pardew gave opportunities to youngsters in the second-half: 19-year-old forward Reise Allasani netted the Eagles’ fourth of the afternoon, before setting up Frazier Campbell for their fifth.

Aston Villa 1 Fulham 3

Libor Kozak netted his first goal in a year and a half for the Villains as they fell to a defeat against Championship Fulham in this training match. Micah Richards lined up at centre-back in his first start for the West Midlands club, while the lively Joe Cole served up the assist for Kozak’s equaliser.

Neither Jack Grealish nor Christian Benteke played a part against the Cottagers – despite being named on the bench. It was later revealed that Grealish picked up a hamstring strain in training but is expected to be passed fit for Villa’s clash with Braga on Friday.

Swindon Town 0 Everton 4

Roberto Martinez’s men eased to a 4-0 victory over the Robins, despite failing to breach the host’s rearguard before the break. The Toffees named strong lineups in both halves (Martinez enacted nine changes for the second period), handing starts to Tom Cleverley, Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley.

Kevin Mirallas pushed his case for increased pitch time for the new campaign, recording a second-half brace. Mirallas (7.0) netted seven goals across just 1,421 minutes last term, yet Martinez’s penchant for rotation tempered our interest in the Belgian winger. Lukaku popped up for Everton’s third goal, while 22-year-old forward Conor McAleny – who notched three assists at the County Ground – topped off a productive afternoon with a goal of his own.

Everton now depart for Singapore to continue their preparations in the Barclays Asia Trophy with Stoke and Arsenal. They could be without Mo Besic for the tour, with the midfielder picking up a knock against Swindon. Aiden McGeady will also miss out with a hamstring injury, while Leighton Baines, Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson will remain on Merseyside as they continue to progress with injuries.

Gorleston 0  Norwich City 7

Fielding a different XI in each half, the Canaries made short work of the ninth-tier local side, storming to a 5-0 lead before half time. Cameron Jerome did the bulk of the early damage – racking up three goals and an assist – before Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe and Tony Andreu opened their pre-season accounts. Jerome ended the previous campaign as Norwich’s top scorer (18), yet there remains lingering doubts over his capacity to perform at the top level following stints at Crystal Palace and Stoke City.

A more experienced XI entered the fray in the second half, with the likes of Sebastien Bassong, Johnny Howson, Bradley Johnson and Gary Hooper gracing the pitch. Lewis Grabban and Howson extended the scoreline in the 69th and 72nd minutes, respectively, capping of a successful pre-season debut for Alex Neil’s troops.

Martin Olsson missed out for the Canaries as he continues his rehabilitation following a shoulder operation.

Southampton 0 Valencia 1
Southampton 0 Red Bull Salzburg 2

The Saints’ pre-season campaign continued apace with two 45-minute encounters in the Audi Quattro Cup in Austria. The first match-up against Valencia saw Paulo Gazzaniga deployed between the sticks, while Cuco Martina earned his debut for Southampton at left-back. Graziano Pelle, Jose Fonte and Sadio Mane were also named in the starting XI, with the latter two both threatening to break the deadlock when they rattled the woodwork.

A defeat to the Spanish club in the semi-finals set up a third-fourth place playoff against Red Bull Salzburg.  Maarten Stekelenburg took up goalkeeping duties, ensuring that Koeman could assess his full complement of shot-stoppers in the wake of Fraser Forster’s long-term injury. Dusan Tadic clocked his first minutes since succumbing to injury at the tail-end of the previous season, while Cedric Soares, Gaston Ramirez, Jay Rodriquez and Shane Long also featured.

AFC Wimbledon 2 Watford 2

Having netted two goals in the Hornets’ 4-0 victory over St Albans, Odio Ighalo continued his pre-season form with another, admittedly fortuitous strike, in the 2-2 stalemate. Ighalo blocked and deflected an attempted clearance by the AFC Wimbledon keeper, Joe McDonnell, into the net. Fernando Forestieri later scrambled Watford in front before a late penalty pegged them back.

Quique Sanchez Flores retained the 4-2-3-1 set-up that he rolled out in their previous fixture, with Sebastian Prodl drafted in for Gabriele Angella in central defence – Ikechi Anya was again deployed at left-back. Almen Abdi dropped back alongside Etienne Capoue in the midfield pivot to facilitate the inclusion of Vydra further up the field. He was deployed as part of an attacking three, along with Ighalo and Forestieri, pushed up in support of skipper Troy Deeney.

Peterborough United 3 West Ham United 3

Slaven Bilic opted for a 4-3-3 set-up in his first match in charge of the Hammers, with 18-year-old midfielder Martin Samuelson (left flank) and Modibo Maiga (fight flank) supporting central striker Diafra Sakho. Pedro Obiang supported stalwarts Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble in midfield, while youngster Alex Pike was a surprise inclusion at right-back.

The Irons cruised into a 3-0 lead after 23 minutes courtesy of goals from Noble, Sakho and Samuelson, only to relinquish that advantage by the final whistle. Speaking after the match, Bilic stressed the importance of finding goals from midfield:

“It is always good to see the strikers get among the goals. It is good for their confidence to keep scoring goals and we have to add more goals from midfield than we scored last year. That was missing and we cannot just rely on strikers. It is very important that people like Mark, Pedro, Kevin score their share of goals.”

Intriguingly, Aaron Cresswell was tasked with playing in the engine room for the final 23 minutes of the match. Pressed on his logic behind the experiment, Bilic explained that it’s beneficial to test ball-playing defenders in the more cramped confines of central midfield to improve their awareness:

“It is always good for a defender who is good on the ball to play a little bit in midfield because you have less space there and it was good for him.”

If I was Liverpool's owner and had the money spare I would turn down any offer for sterling and let him rot in the reserves for 2 years. I'd make him clean the players boots and run to get them drinks whenever they wanted it done and if he refused I'd done him every single time.

Point is what does he have to be grateful for? You never found and produced him, you poached him from QPR so why does he need to act like he's been at the club since 6 and speaks with a Scouse accent?

Liverpool is a stepping stone, time to accept that, we saw what he was capable with class players like Suarez and Sturridge, imagine him at City, going to be class.

And that will do what for the club?

If no player is bigger than the club than there should be no issue selling him.

According to Rodgers he's the best young player in Europe so while you may think he's not bigger than the club he's certainly worth more than playing for the club lol.

I have had years of Liverpool fans telling me their club is classy.

Your attitude (as above) and the attitude of many Liverpool fans about Sterling demonstrates the truth.

When Torres left there were Liverpool fans burning his shirt. The place is like a cult.

Why all the fury toward Sterling?

I agree partly, but the problem is the way he has gone about it.

First going through the media to get a move, the BBC interview, the constant leaks, missing training because he's 'sick' etc.

a lot of other players at his age and younger in same position have not behaved that way. it's awful behaviour and for a player mapped to be a future star it's not a good way to portray yourself.

RP on the new post. 🙂

Seeing a lot here doubling up on Chelsea attack with Costa and Hazard/Fabregas.

First 6 fixtures for Chelsea are-

    SWA- Easyish
    mci- potential 0-0
    wba- Pulis defense
    CRY- Easy
    eve- tough away game
ARS- Arsenl look strong defensively and mourinho would play to not lose.

Don't really see Chelsea scoring many goals in those fixtures. Mourinho at the start of the season will always play for 1-0 wins in the tough fixtures and would even settle for 0-0s if need be.

Investing so much in Chelsea attack may well turn out to be a bad move and 1 Chelsea attacker should be more than enough.

City and West Brom are tough fixtures for an attacking team. The rest I wouldn't worry about. They put nine past Swansea in their two matches against them last season - that alone is reason enough to double up on their attackers for GW1.

        Swansea are different now.

More settled as a side defensively. Monk would make sure they don't get another hammering. He's that kind of a manager.

I'm not sure. They still struggle against big strong target men - they have good defenders, and lots of possession, which leads to clean sheets, but they also have days where they can't cope with the opposition - Andy Carroll has given Ashley Williams nightmares on more than one occasion. Costa (C) GW1 for me.

Mou will play for 1-0s in the Man City game. Apart from that I expect them to come out firing in every game, like last year. Swansea may be more settled but that matters little if Chelsea are on fire.

Plenty of cover in the mf now for united. Carrick,Bastian,Herrera,Fellaini and Blind there. Don't think Rooney would have to play deep even if injuries happen.

Will probably result in even more pens of City, which makes Aguero an even better option... annoyingly.

7 goals and 10 assists playing badly in a terrible team last season.

9 goals and 7 assists in 2200 minutes the season before. (that's about 14 goals and 10 assists over a full season)

Now in a better team, and only going to get better.

Probably overpaying slightly, but you still have to pay the English premium, and he's one of the best young players in world football.

With add-ons Man U are paying £30m for Depay, who has only ever played in the Dutch league, and nobody made a fuss over that fee.

I think it would benefit Silva in a 4231, as Silva can send Sterling through on goal.

With 2 up front I reckon Sterling would be more of an out and out winger, so any Silva to Sterling combinations would likely lead to Sterling crossing into other players.

Is Hazard essential? I am concerned that he is in so many teams at the moment that to go without him could be a real risk. But he seems a little too expensive to me. Also, can you really have him and Aguero in the same team? That is a lot of money on two spots, and I am thinking that Aguero is the better option. What does everyone else think?

There's no such thing as essential.

Just play your own game. He has high ownership because he scored the most points last year, not because you're missing something glaringly obvious.

      Trust your judgement! 😉

This. Herd mentality is infectious on this site.

Saying that, going without a high ownership player of that calibre puts your early rank in jeopardy. It is a risk to go without. Personally, I love the risk 😛

So, what you're saying is Hazard's, or any player's TSB% should be inconsequential in determining if we should choose a player or not, correct?

And, I'd agree... We shouldn't care if a player has 100% or 1% ownership.
We should judge a him on his own merits.

As a result, I'd love to hear a compelling argument *against* wanting to own a player who's been in the Top 10 FPL scorers for his entire FPL career?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

        Huh?

Sure, fundamentally there's no one that's essential but, Hazard there a few who could present a case against having him in our side?

He plays for a top scoring team in the league.
He rarely (if ever?) misses a game due to injury or rotation.
He's been in the Top 10 FPL players for all 3 years of his career.
He is on penalties for his club.
He produces an exceptional PPM for a Heavy Hitter.
More so when we include the fact that he offers a wonderful captain's option.

So, regardless if Hazard's owned by 99% or 9% it's pretty tough to make a case against wanting him on our teams.

I agree, and he's in my team, but the fella who asked the question had his reasons for omitting Hazard, and his concern was ownership, rather than the factors you mentioned.

So, why not say that to OP then?

"Hey mate, don't just follow the herd! You should choose Hazard because he's good not because lots of people own him."

Gotta be careful because, "The herd know nothing!" makes it sound like Hazard's somehow a bad choice...

With the likes of Alexis and Kun unlikely to hit the ground running following the Copa America and Costa/Falcao affecting the former scoring potential is it worth looking elsewhere initially with a team full of players likely to start well such as Mane/JayRod, Bolasie/Cabaye, Siggy, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Sakho etc?

Yaya could be a good pick if Aguero doesn't start but you'll want the striker eventually - I'm just going to try to make room for him from the off. I may omit Hazard but having serious doubts about it...

I reckon so, or when you have the first big benching dilemma early on, and are struggling to leave a couple players on the bench. And also when your bench keeper also has a great fixture. Don't think it's that much of a game-changer saving it for a DGW, compared with the triple captain.

Even if we have one or two injuries we're still getting at least 22 games rather than 15 like we would on a normal GW.

No one on here risking Firmino??? OOP, amazing stats, likely that Liverpool will be more attacking this year?

Or do bad fixtures, settling in, last season putting everyone off?

I'm finding it hard to see past Firmino, Sanchez, Deepay, Mane, Ritchie in midfield.

At worst I can see him wide right in a front 3, maybe behind a striker. Certainly will be high high up.

Firmino, Deepay, Sanchez, Mane all could potentially as OOPs, or something very close to this year.

I meant more that it depends who Liverpool bring in to be the striker. Him feeding Ings and Origi isn't too attractive to me.

Looking at the stats for last season it's incredible how dominant Aguero was - head and shoulders above everyone else on many of the key underlying stats. If he's fit, he's more essential than Hazard IMO (who is essential himself) - just have to build your team around those two.

Aye, but if good budget options don't reveal themselves, overall returns might be made by spreading out the budget more.

I'm comfortable going the first 3 without him, I'll reevaluate after those games.

I have an idea. When you agree with a comment made by someone on FFS, instead of upvoting that comment to show your concurrence, why not excessively fill up the website's pages with a response of simply 'This'?

'This' won't become annoying in the slightest to others reading the comments and will be sure to impress people with your in-depth evaluation of the original poster's opinions.

Not seen many West ham defenders in the RMTs.

They imo have the best home fixtures to start the season with.

Moreover them playing competitive games in the pre season would help them be in much better condition than other teams at the start of the season.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City away in the first 6?

5m to only play half of the opening fixtures, in a team that aren't historically good defensively, with a new manager, and defenders that offer no attacking threat.

Yeah he needs to stay fit for the majority of the season and i think they're looking strong to challenge for 1st again. Then they'll still have Bony who's obviously not in the same league, but knows where the back of the net is and could improve after a settling in period last season.

Sterling is overrated. Had a chance to shine up front with Sturridge injured last season and did little. Would argue he may supply more for Aguero though, so makes him more appealing.

He was excellent playing with Suarez iirc, could argue Aguero will have a similar invigorating effect.

A 19 year old played in a position that he doesn't normally play for an injury hit team in bad form and didn't set the world on fire? Can't say that's anyway to judge the lad

Got hauled off at half time against Everton earlier in the season because he was so bad.

Every time I saw him he seemed to make a host of chances but poor finishing let him down. If he can convert just a few of these he'd be golden. Maybe with a bit more maturity he'll have a coller head in front of goal.

So much defensive talent in the 4.5-5m range, i'm thinking as my defensive budget:

    6.0 5.0 4.5 4.5 4.5

Currently on - Azpi Williams Huth Coates Collocini

With the change to BPS those 4 centre backs could bring real value, probably bring in Jags and Shawcross when their fixtures ease.

Risking any 4m defenders early on is not worth it for me, as I'll jump on any when/if they appear.

Currently on 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 myself. Can't ignore the value of those 5.0m/4,5m defenders, and defenders from bigger teams have had a BPS hit this season.

Flexible to bring in players like Lescott, Sakho/Lovren (14 CSs last season), Janmaat, Fuchs...

Once upon a time he was good fantasy material but with age that aspect has faded.
When younger, when his engine was immense he maaged to get from box to box almost every charge forward Munich made, this is not the case any more.
Like most players in his possitions he ends up being deeper every year and thus can't keep up to find those great set ups he did when younger.
There are so many options in midfield that I dare to say he is not fantasy material.

Schweinsteiger is more of a holding midfielder that tends to play 60-70 minutes/game. This signing dents Carrick's game time rather than boosts Rooney's potential.

I think Sterling's massively overrated.. Can't see that he'll improve much on the options at City that are already there. Not much between him and Navas for me and, hate to say it, on his day Nasri is twice the footballer.

Anyone that can score hattricks and braces against the likes of Arsenal and Spurs can't be looked down upon at 9m playing for arguably the best attack in the league. I think for 9m, assuming he gets plenty of minutes and avoids injury, he'll do well. Being as regular as Silva and priced 1m less will make him him well worthy of consideration.
