Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

Why is Kane not in many people's teams? Every friendly I have looked at it, Kane has been top scorer. He is maybe the most nailed player in the league at this stage

Is it just the 9.5 price?

      9.5 is the main issue.

I have him. As I said earlier today, Kane has to perform to keep Spurs alive. He's their only hope.

If he had started at 9.5m last season he'd be in everyone's teams. Also if he didn't have such a tough first fixture he'd be more popular.

I'd say he's a little overpriced at 9.5, if he performs like last year he may be worth getting in, I'd rather wait and see how he starts and rather benteke at 8.5

I had a dream that he scored a brace at Old Trafford on the opening day, and people on here were falling over berating themselves for writing him off all summer - 'Why didn't we see this coming', 'Kane is essential', etc.

Probably a sign that I need to stop thinking about FPL though, rather than a premonition.

I can't see him scoring against the team with DDG, Schweini, Schneidi...only hope is United's woeful defense.

I've had this thought as well. It's a 12:45 kick off as well so some people's chance of winning will be gone before any of their team has played. 🙂

I've got Rooney Kane and Sakho now. I think that Hazard will do better than Costa, so that's why no Costa. Thinking about getting Aguero in for GW3 or 4, which would mean Rooney comes out.

I am doing a 2-5-3 formation to start off because I am planning to wildcard in GW2 anyway so it is a perfect opportunity and I am just gonna save the other two chips for DGW's so please can you rate my team!

    .........Schmeichel (4.0)
    ..........Kos..... Schlupp (4.0 x 3)
Ozil.. Hazard.. Fab.. Walcott (C) Ritchie
    ....Lukaku... Costa.. Wilson

All these players are at home to weaker opposition..

    Bournemouth have AVL at home
    Chelsea have Swansea
    Everton - Watford
    Arsenal have West Ham
    Leicester have Sunderland..

    Thoughts??

I was going to go for Clyne, then I realised that last season he had 2 goals and 2 assists, 0.5 goal attempts per match, and 0.6 chances created per match.

      Weird considering his reputation.

I have a draft for an attack for the first 4 gameweeks, this will take me up to gameweek 5, where I will ideally wildcard before those fixtures, when I know which players will be nailed on.

Let me know what you think of this please.

    Pantillimon 4.0

    Ivanovic Azpilicueta Cedric 4.0 4.0

    Sterling Fabregas Ozil Mane Henderson

    Rooney Sakho Wilson

I will be playing 3-5-2 with the same top 3 defenders, all 5 midfielders and rotating strikers (Sakho & Wilson) to give these attacking fixtures

    AVL, LEI, BOU, LEI

RMT over 4 weeks gives 214.25 and that is without Cedric's spot nailed on (or so I think)

Not bad, a bit different... Who will you captain, Rooney every week?

        • 11 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

Just having a quick look at the fixtures, yeah probably. I don't see where I would get bigger scores each week apart from maybe a gamble on Sterling against Watford in gameweek 4.

Somehow the RMT tool is throwing up Henderson for captain week 2 against Bournemouth, but I'm not so sure I can trust that

In all honesty, I think the defence is too expensive, and a couple of 4.0 defenders is looking unlikely right now. Wilson is a bit expensive to be permanently benched? And going without either Hazard or Costa seems like suicide...

I'm hoping those 3 defenders (Ivan, Azpi and Cedric) are in line to play 90 mins for the first 4 weeks, I wouldn't be bothering with the others.

I know the risk of one of them missing a week or two.

I also have 1.0m left in the bank for any changes

I guess you could use your all out attack chip if one of them were injured? Especially as you'd have a decent attacker on the bench with some good fixtures.

You do know you can make one transfer for free each week don't you? Its lovely when you make yourself a fab team with everything planned out, right up until reality intervenes. Its a nice starting squad, with a lot of players similar to mine, but try not to get too attached. 😉

Yes, it is just a draft at the moment, when the time comes and if all the players are nailed/fit then I may gamble I may not. I may have more trouble than I anticipated though, trying to get Aguero in may be tricky using only 2 FTs

1m in the bank. Not willing to spend it as I need it to get Aguero in for Rooney.

    Ruddy Butland
    Azpi Richards Cedric Huth Coates
    Hazard Silva Mane Puncheon Bentaleb

I decided to try a three week team with a view to WC GW4 but is really is hard.. Nobody has more than three good ones, many have a really bad first game and most that have a good first game have a crap second. Think I may pick a GW1 team and WC in GW2 😛

          This.

You need to add the 4th game into planning. Brings in the likes of Liverpool Arsenal and Coty more prominently too

Yep Liverpool, West Ham and Swansea put a spanner in the works with that, could start with Wilson then switch to Sakho gw2 or something like that

The main benefit of an early WC is to see the lie of the land, which cheap defs are playing, who's playing in the hole, that kind of thing. But you need 3 or 4 GWs to see that.

WCing GW2 is too early, you end up with Eric Dier or Marlon Harewood...

I know it's the accepted strategy to play an uber cheap midfielder so as "not to leave money on the bench" but I wonder if the new chips require a bit more squad depth this season? I know most are planning to use the bench boost and/or the all out attack chips in a DGW later in the season but one of the keys to playing FPL well is to remain flexible. Surely having no bench forces your own hand as to when you play the chips? If you had a deeper bench you would be better placed to take advantage of a scenario that cropped up, for instance a couple of defenders getting injured and you wanting to play 253 that week. Not sure I'd want Victor Wanyama on the field in that scenario.

At Villa the entire strategy was based around Benteke and playing to his strengths. I'm probably missing something but I don't see why his fpl prospects should be so greatly improved by his moving.

When you're little, attacking will be limited

RWB or RW very attacking, can beat a man and can finish. Will be rotated.

Scored this beaut against Neuer -

He's a backup player. Stay way way away.

Anya's appearances will be very limited this year. He's a backup player.

Likely to be first choice creative/attacking midfielders for Watford: Abdi, Jurado and (if he signs, which looks likely) Berghuis.

Jurado is probably the safest pick purely because he has history with QSF, whereas the others do not. Abdi just signed a new 3 year contract so he's tied down, but has had a couple of unlucky seasons from an injury standpoint (non-recurring injuries, a string of bad luck). If he stays injury free he's an excellent play that runs the Watford midfield.

Until WHM do sign another striker Sakho is certainly first choice up top.

He's scored 2 pre-season and there really isn't anyone else.
