Romelu Lukaku bags a hat-trick as Everton breeze past Hearts. Theo Walcott boosts his Fantasy stock as he snatches Arsenal’s winner against Wolfsburg, Newcastle new boy Georginio Wijnaldum nets again, whilst Palace taste defeat at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Here are the notes from Sunday’s pre-season encounters…

Arsenal 1 Wolfsburg 0

Arsene Wenger made ten changes to the XI that swept aside Lyon 6-0 on Saturday, with only Mesut Ozil retaining his place. This saw Petr Cech handed his home debut between the posts, with a back-four of Hector Bellerin, Gabriel, Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal. Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla were stationed in the double-pivot, whilst Jack Wilshere, Ozil and Jeff Reine-Adelaide tucked in behind lone frontman, Theo Walcott.

Reine-Adelaide supplied the pass for the only goal of the match, as Walcott strengthened his claim for a central berth by slotting home just five minutes after the break. Wenger made five alterations over the course of the second period, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud afforded further minutes off the bench.

Post-match, the Gunners boss had plenty to say over Walcott’s performance in an interview with the club’s official website:

“Another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that because I played him through the middle. I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments. When he gets into these positions he finishes well. Yesterday he nearly scored when he came on as a substitute, today he scored. I believe that Theo will score goals. In his ideal world he would like to play with a strong guy next to him, a player who is very strong physically, and he play off him. We have so many offensive players which makes that very difficult to combine all of them together.”

Wenger’s line-up for the Community Shield on Sunday will clearly give us the clearest indication on his thinking ahead of the season opener against West Ham. Walcott appears to be in the driving seat to claim the striker’s role, leaving Olivier Giroud potentially frozen out to the bench in a repeat of Arsenal’s previous Wembley appearance for the FA Cup final. While Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla remain clear early midfield targets in the light of Alexis Sanchez’s expected Gameweek 1 absence, Walcott has emerged as potentially the most explosive option. He has currently claimed 7.8 ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Hearts 1 Everton 3

A Romelu Lukaku hat-trick steered Everton to victory at Tynecastle as the muscular Belgian showed poise from the spot to convert two penalties. Gareth Barry was fouled in the box to allow Lukaku to strike home his first goal, while Seamus Coleman’s assist then set up the striker for his second to hand Everton the lead. Kevin Mirallas was then brought down to allow his compatriot to complete his hat-trick.

Significantly, the 3-1 victory marked the first pre-season appearance for Leighton Baines – confirming the fact that Lukaku is now ahead of the left-back in the pecking order for spot kicks.

Baines took his place in a first-choice back four that was made up of Coleman, John Stones and Phil Jagielka playing in front of Joel Robles in goal. Roberto Martinez deployed his side in an attacking 4-3-3, anchoring the midfield with Barry, James McCarthy and Leon Osman. An attacking trio of Lukaku and Mirallas, flanking Arouna Kone through the middle, provided the threat.

The likes of Tom Cleverley and Ross Barkley were reduced to appearances from the bench. Bryan Oviedo was also amongst one of the subs introduced in the second period as he made his belated return from injury.

It remains to be seen if Martinez maintains the new attacking 4-3-3 setup, although post-match the Everton boss was clearly enthused by his side’s display…

“Going forward we looked a threat, but then we always kept a good balance and only a lapse in concentration early saw us concede from a dead ball situation. Apart from that I thought we kept our defensive duties to a good level.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 Crystal Palace 0

The Eagles ended the inaugural Cape Town Cup with a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Alan Pardew again kept faith with the 4-2-3-1 setup but shuffled his pack following the 4-0 win over Supersport United two days ago.

Alex McCarthy made his Palace debut in goal following his move from QPR; he played behind a back four made up of Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney and Pape Souare. James McArthur and Johan Cabaye were deployed in the double pivot, with Jason Puncheon, Jordan Mutch and Dwight Gayle in the attacking three, supporting Glenn Murray up front.

Pardew was again without Yannick Bolasie through injury, while Marouane Chamakh was also absent and Wilfried Zaha was limited to a cameo role from the bench following a recent knock. Post-match, the Palace boss bemoaned the lack of creativity from wide areas…

“We lacked a little bit of width today – Zaha hasn’t been fit and only trained for one day this pre-season so that was his first 10 minutes of action and Bolasie was injured in training on Thursday and it’s a shame he wasn’t involved because we probably missed a little bit of his x-factor.”

This would suggest that we’ll see a different attacking three take to the field against Fulham on Saturday, in a line-up that is most likely to reflect the teamsheet at Norwich on the opening day.

Sheffield United 2 Newcastle 2

Steve McClaren continued with a 4-2-3-1 formation for the trip to Bramall Lane. A back-four of Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Massadio Haidara sat in front of Tim Krul, with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita stationed in the double-pivot. Further up the field, Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez took up the attacking midfield spots behind Papiss Cisse, with new signing Aleksandar Mitrovic yet to be involved.

Wijnaldum (7.0 in FPL) netted his second goal in as many appearances for the Magpies, courtesy of a Papiss Cisse pass, before Siem de Jong – one of seven second-half substitutes – notched his side’s second after slotting home a flick-on from a Colback corner. Although Steven Taylor (4.0 in FPL) started at centre-half again, McClaren is clearly determined to strengthen at the back – the Magpies have agreed a deal for Anderlecht centre-half Chancel Mbemba, with the FA expected to confirm the transfer on Thursday.

The Newcastle boss also played down rumours of a move away for Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine has yet to play a part in pre-season due to injury and has been linked with a move to Palace but McClaren is clearly keen to keep him:

“We want him playing. He has got a little niggle, which he has every season and that has to be taken care of. He is working on conditioning. In America he was out most of the time because of the surface in the last game. We are still working and have time. He needs to have a good week and needs to play Saturday. We need him in the team. I have come in and they have told me to assess the squad. Colo has come in and I have been delighted with his attitude and the way he is around the place. That’s great – but we need him on the field. I looked at Coloccini in training and he’s one of our best players. I know things were difficult last season but I want him out on the field in a Newcastle shirt. He’s great for the team.”

After the match, new signing Wijnaldum admitted he’s still suffering from jet lag after arriving late to the club’s tour of the US before returning to the UK just a few days later:

“It is always hard to play after a flight of 10 hours but what is harder is that a lot of players still live in the time that they have in America, so most of the time I wake up at four o’clock and I can’t sleep any more – today I had the same problem. I am always pleased to score goals and always happy if I make goals. I’m always looking for that one chance and today I had that one chance, when you get it you must be ready.”

I think they are all guaranteed starters for GW1 (Depay being most risky but still very likely to play) but Theo is far from nailed on once Sanchez is back and the United boys will be rotated for the odd game. I am waiting to see if Di Maria stays and if they get a replacement should he leave, that will be very telling about the faith in Depay and Mata.

Should I start with benteke or with kane?
I think kane is the safe option and I can easily downgrade him to benteke

I have a suspicion that Kane might suffer a degree of second-seasonitis, this season. He experienced a dip in form in the latter stages of last season and failed to find it during the Euro U21s. Defenders and defences might well have found him out by now and will be better prepared for him.
Bennett could equally be a gamble though. He's had success in a team that was built around him and his style of play. A luxury he won't be afforded by The Brodge, so he might take a little while for his game to fit the Liverpool way. If it does at all that is.
It's all guesswork at the moment though.

I just don't get the mentality that suggests keeping 2m or more in the bank is a good idea.

It's suggesting that they're prepared to get fewer points for a couple of weeks. The best thing to do is invest the money in a player, or players that will score you more points, and then use a couple of transfers to release the cash and bring aguero/sanchez/hazard in. That way you cash in some points, and maybe add 0.1 to the kitty.

Agreed. If you want the transfer after GW1 then it makes more sense (although I never understood picking a player for 1 week only.) Most people are saving up for the Aguero switch at around GW4 but they would be so much better off upgrading a player and getting the extra points for 3 weeks, even if it does then cost a 4 point hit.

Definitely. I'm more interested in putting the best team out for the first 3 weeks and worry about bringing aguero in when I have to.

I suppose the other part of the argument is to have a reasonable team balance, which I guess does have a cost ðŸ™

I think your rating system would be better if you increased your range of rating i.e. 10 out of 20 for the gks' leaves much more room for the 13 out of 20 if it is a slightly better combo than the one you are using presently. It should give you a nice round score out of 100.

I'd only go with Panti as my GK, Downgrade Schmeichel to a 4.0.
Don't think Darmian is nailed on just yet, Clyne/Mert are look better at 5.5. Jenkinson will miss GW1.
Not convinced by Hoolahan, maybe go with a 4.5 and spend the 0.5 somewhere else.
Lack of Hazard is a problem.
      Strikers are solid.

As I said Darmian is nailed on for the first few matches. He'll probably be eased on into the side. I'd go with Valencia if you wanted a utd defender to start off with.

No save points is a concern. I was thinking of rotating Butland/Myhill, but then I might just go with Panti/Fab + 4.0. But that's a concern for another day.
Clyne has more attacking potential than Azpi, but the liverpool defense is a concern.

This will be the Manchester United lineup for those wondering. Its based on the pre-season thus far and the assumption Blind won't be a starting CB.

    -----------------------DDG----------------------

    Darmain----Jones----Smalling----Shaw

    -------------Carrick-----Morgan-------------

    Mata--------------Depay-------------Young

    --------------------Rooney--------------------

With just one warm up game left it wouldn't surprise me to see LVG change it up but apart from Blind starting ahead of Smalling in the warm up games so far this team has began every match (DDG being the other exception). The second team has been made up of fringe United players and youngsters so far. Bastian being the unlucky one, he'll rotate with Carrick all season.

Been playing CM alongside Bastian in the 2nd half team so far. Been very ordinary there, he suits the 433 better. Fellaini hasn't featured at all which is also interesting.

He wasn't banned for the warm up games haha. He's banned for at least the season opener, probably more. Van Gaal's mindset is to play the players who can actually contribute come the start of the season hence Fellaini's lack of preseason minutes

Shaw has much more competition on his side, he has rojo, blind AND young who played there for the majority of last season to good effect. I'm not saying I don't think shaw is in pole position but I do think he will be rotated heavily.

Probably not but one bad game or one niggling injury and he will be out in a flash. Rohoho, blind and young all offer alternatives depending on the importance of defensive ability or attacking ability of the fb for any specific match.

Young won't be a LB. when we played 3 at the back last season Young was good as a LWB but I don't recall him ever being used as a pure LB with a LW starting ahead of him.

LVG has said Blind is competing for a spot in the double pivot and Rojo as a CB. I agree that Shaw won't play every game and there will be injuries and some rotation but I also believe that Shaw is ahead of the competition at the moment and is first choice.

Yeah you are probably right. whoscored.com have young as only having played 2 games at lb last season and 17 at lm (lwd).

I'd be careful what you read into LVG comments as he rambles a lot imo. Blind will be a utility player who will fill in wherever he is required imo. I don't think he is best suited to a lb role (bit like young he is better lwb imo) and while I think Rojo will be in competition for the left cb role I do think if everyone is fit and Shaw is not killing it that Rojo would be used at lb instead of on the bench. Great depth of possibilities for the lb position compared to RB imo.

Yeah thats more or less what I took from it Dribb, I think he wants two players for each position and Darmian will be behind Valencia until he adapts to the epl. He may be second choice at the start if Valencia is fit but once he gets a few games in a row he should be first choice (providing he does well ofc). Worth staying away for now in any case.

To me it sounds like he is saying he will ease them in to see how they adjust. Looks like it might be safer to stick with valencia in the short term I guess. I'd expect Darmian to be first choice once he has settled though.

Caz is under serious rotation threat this season imo.

I know he was nailed last year but Arsenal never had a fully fit lineup and I think wilshere/rambo will play some games instead of Caz this year. Wenger is going to have a hard time keeping everyone happy unless he gets more big injuries again this season.

Ozil is a much better pick than Cazorla who unless he gets pens is really not worth going near imo.

Just an opinion buddy no real need for the "LOL" we are all entitled to one.

I'll give you a small but significant tip for playing this game. The obvious is already priced into the game i.e. Kun will be the top scoring forward in the game as he was last season and the Chelsea defenders are likely to be the top scoring defenders. Now if you want to do well then you have to look for what will change between this season and last in order for you to gauge who has been under priced and who has been overpriced (as in yaya toure last season who if I had told you before last season started that he would not be in the top 10 highest scoring mids you would probably have "lol-ed" too).

To me Cazorla has been over priced for the position he plays and the amount of game time he is likely to get this season. As per above though this is only an opinion 😉

Might need a 4.0 enabler defender. Which one?

    A. Saylor
    B. Bennett
    C. Turner
    D. Baker

Or do i just pick the least owned one and stick with it.

Targett for short term punt? I'm also tempted with Baker but he might move apparently.

Moore is having time. and if tinkerman goes 3 at the back he might stay longer than expected

If you are not intending on transferring him pick one that would not be anticipated to play as anyone with him will either be dead teams a couple of weeks so will not be transferring him out. If you pick one that fans think will play that won't play then they will be transferring him out asap. This is ofc unless you have a 4.0 that is nailed on to start in which case he should rise in value.

    thinking about this currently

    a) o'shea and ulloa
    b) Wislon and lescott

      downgrade defence and upgrade strikers

You really should upgrade the front line... not enough captain options imo. Downgrade the defence, unless you wanna play them all every week? Take one 4.0 def, and 2/3 4.5. You can also downgrade Guzan if you have a premium GK.

Those changes should give you some cash to upgrade the forwards, and get Benteke/Rooney/Costa alongside Kane

    Depay Milner Walcott Hazard

    Deeney Rooney Giroud

Could I get some thoughts on this please guys? Too risky?

Not at all. Great team. Depay is an unknown. Might be nice to go with double Arsenal perhaps and then switch when required.

Double up in the Mid you mean? I have Giroud and Walcott for attack - if Wenger doesn't sign a new striker

Sterling is on the radar - but Rooney will become Aguero at some point.

Depay has to stay, got a very good feeling about him (probs wrong tho)

too much gamble on ManU, but it might work, I liked their formation against Barca, have Rooney in my team and will consider defender as well.

    Final question (year right)

What is the best option in your opinion:

    a) a 3 way rotating def. based on fixtures. Where 1 of Mings/Francis, O'Shea or Taylor plays each week. Fixtures are: AVL, NOR, SWA, LEI, nor, WAT, stk, WAT, NOR, NEW

    OR

    b) a more pricey player such as Alderweireld or Lescott starting each week with 2 x 4m def. such as Taylor and Baker on bench.

Can I please get a rating of my team? The tinkering as subsided recently which would suggest I may be happy. But deep down I always feel a little uncertain@

    Pantmilion (Hennesy)

    Azpi Kos Huth (Prodl) (Targett)

    Mane Walcott Ozil Depay Ritchie

    Rooney Benteke (Sakho)

Rotating Sakho and Ritchie dependant on fixtures. Expensive rotation but I think it will work very well. Also like having the assurance of a decent back up should someone not start.

Will downgrade one of Walcott, Ozil or Depay and Swap Rooney for Aguero in either GW 3 or 4.

Also torn between Depay an Mata from the start but I always seem to prefer a goal threat to assist threat. Was v much 51/49 on this one

    Thoughts?

Nothing wrong with Mane or Sakho given the fixtures.

Agree Lei defence and Ritchie could be dodgy (unknown)

8 / 10 for me, solid team. I think you're gonna regret rotating Sakho and Ritchie, because you know the one you bench will score points.... 🙂

I would rather have them on my bench scoring than not at all. Plan is to have Aguero captain most gameweeks. Surprised about the dislike for Ritchie I think he will be the main man in quite an attacking team.

Been tinkering...and pretty happy with this lot. Was worried about Mert... but early season, I'm confident he'll be first choice.

    Any glaring issues? Ideas?

    Schmeics - Schwarzer
    Azpi - Mertesacker - Mings ( Jenkinson - Targett )
    Hazard - Ozil - Mata - Mane ( King )
    Rooney - Kane - C.Wilson
