Following the earlier addition of former Manchester City duo Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair, Aston Villa made Idrissa Gueye their third new signing of the summer, with the midfielder joining from Lille for a fee believed to be in the region of £9 million. The Senegal international has penned a four-year contract at Villa Park.

After securing the 25-year-old’s signature, Villa boss Tim Sherwood explained he is looking to get the most out of the versatile Gueye’s attacking potential in the season ahead:

“Idrissa is a good acquisition to the squad. He has the same energy as Fabian Delph. He’s similar to Ramires. He can play flexible as well – as a No 6 in a sitting midfield role or as a No 8 box to box. Idrissa can do both of them. He wants to get the shackles off really and get box to box. That’s what he’s looking to do and we’re happy for him to do that. He wanted to come to the Premier League. He had a few options but we were delighted he decided to join us.â€

THE HISTORY

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye starring for the French outfit.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, before becoming a key player during the past two seasons.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered two assists, triggering reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011 and has since racked up 23 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to open his account for his country. He started all three matches in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

THE PROSPECTS

With Fabian Delph now departed after his dramatic U-turn and last season’s loanee Tom Cleverley moving to Everton, Sherwood desperately needs to bolster his options in the centre of the park.

Gueye certainly looks an assured starter for the Villains, either in a two or three-man central midfield. Sherwood has recently utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 formations in pre-season and the latter system could see Gueye partnered by Ashley Westwood or Carlos Sanchez, with all three likely to start in a 4-3-3 unless their manager strengthens his midfield options further.

Utilised in a 4-1-2-1-2 set-up at Lille last term, the new boy averaged an effort every 78.1 minutes – granted, that’s hardly spectacular, but, as we saw upon his arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood’s attacking approach should boost his players’ prospects in the final third. Three of Delph’s four assists for the season and all three of Cleverley’s goals were produced under the new manager from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Compared to France legend Jean Tigana by former Senegal head coach Alan Giresse, Guyeye’s ball-winning ability will also be vital for Villa – he made a total of 100 tackles in Ligue 1 last season.

Costing 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Gueye will set you back the same price as wingers Scott Sinclair and Charles N’Zogbia, who will be competing for the wide positions along with the 5.5-priced Jack Grealish if Sherwood opts for a front three. Grealish’s recent injury absence has allowed Sinclair the chance to stake a claim for a starting berth, whilst Christian Benteke’s departure could even see the former Swansea man handed spot-kicks. Clearly, at that price, he could be an ideal fifth midfielder if he can convince Sherwood he’s worthy of a regular role, though there are still some question marks over Sinclair’s minutes once Sherwood has a fully fit squad. Westwood is the cheapest Villa midfielder at 4.5, and looks fairly assured of starts – despite a deep-lying role, he does have some set-piece duties in the locker, which has helped him rack up ten assists over the last three seasons.

With Delph, Benteke and Ron Vlaar all gone, though, Sherwood’s next few acquisition will go some way to determining our opinions on the Midlands outfit for the season ahead. Certainly, the Villa boss will set up his team to play with the handbrake off and Gueye may well arrive on our radars if he benefits in the same way as Delph and Cleverley prospered in the latter stages of the previous campaign.

Looking at the schedule, Villa’s opening schedule is very favourable, with the home clash against Man United in Gameweek 2 the only difficult fixture in the first six weeks of the season (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). That should provide us with the ideal opportunity to see how Gueye adapts to English football, though with Grealish just 0.5 dearer, the former Lille man has some way to go to establish himself as the most viable pick amongst Sherwood’s midfield charges.

Much better. Speak it in hushed tones, but he could outscore Hazard and all with a much better supply from the likes of Silva and Toure and MAYBE Kevin De Bruyne. Bonus? He's assisting the best striker in the league.

    Spartan Goalies XI:

    Hennessey, McCarthy
    Koscielny, Azpilicueta, Huth/Muniesa [Targett]
Hazard(C), Walcott (VC), Depay, Eriksen [Bentaleb]
    Benteke, Costa, Wilson

This started out as an experiment of what I could make with two 4.0 keepers, but looking back at it now, Hazard -> Silva/Sterling and/or Costa -> Rooney and this feels like a very strong team.

It was just a thought experiment of what would happen if I piled in all my money into the outfield positions, it was interesting but not a truly serious venture.

But then working backwards from here to save 0.5-1.5m for goalies, rather than building from the ground up, I think I've settled on a team I quite like with Rooney over Costa and a decent goalie rotation.

Seems good. Targett is a pretty short term punt as Bertie will be back soon. I'm not so sure about Clyne tbh. Liverpool's away games are terrible. They do have good home games though so maybe Sakho and save the 0.5

Hmmm... food for thought ref Clyne vs Sakho. Liverpool's last two pre-season games started with Lovren, so I may wait to see what happens. I'm not confident on Targett so perhaps that's a change I need to make. Cheers

I don't quite understand why most on here believe we can live without Hazard and that we have many alternatives as captain for the 1st 3 GWs but then starting GW 4 Aguero is a essential and every week captain. I believe Hazard has been the better FPL player for the last 3 seasons (by quite a gap as well except for last season).

    1) He gets more points (overall points at the end of the season)
    2) His points are more predictable and so easier to nail the captain decision.
    3) He is rarely injured as opposed to Aguero who is injured a lot which is also a worry when you captain him. (how many times have you had him captain and he gets injured before 20 mins)
    4) He is a midfielder so he gets an extra point for CS (very common with Chelsea) and an extra point for a goal.
    5) He is a baps magnet and hogs the baps for his team. Aguero has Yaya,Silva and now Sterling to compete with.
    6) He always plays 90 minutes. Kun gets 70-80 even when fit.
    7) His team always play to his strengths. Kun on the other hand is useless when City play 4-4-2. I expect Pellegrini to try that sometimes.
    8) He is 1.5m cheaper

Just so expensive for a midfielder and Aguero can score four goals a game. But I'm torn.

Apart from the Spurs game last season and QPR towards the end of the season, Aguero hasn't really dominated the points when City score 3 or more. Silva and sometimes Dzeko stole the show.

      > I don't quite understand why most on here believe we can live without Hazard and that we have many alternatives as captain for the 1st 3 GWs

Chelsea play SWA, mci, wba in the 1st three weeks.
      Ars - WHM, cpl, LIV
      Mun - TOT, avl, NEW
And, that's not to mention Lukaku GW1 v. WAT, Benteke v. BOU or Kane v. STO in GW2.
Where in here don't you think you could come up w/ 3 superior captain's choices to Hazard?
(And, make sure you account for Hazard's less than favourable away from home scoring record)

      > I believe Hazard has been the better FPL player for the last 3 seasons (by quite a gap as well except for last season)

Hazard will be an essential part of any team that wants to do well, but you're treating this like an either or situation & frankly, idk why, because they're both exceptional FPL assets to own.

I am only pointing out a bias here for Aguero over Hazard as a FPL player. I didn't limit my argument to the first 3 GWs. I am talking in general.

I disagree on the "less than favourable away from home scoring record" statement by the way. That was put the bed last season by GW 7 or 8 I believe.

This wasn't a statement of opinion, it was one of fact.

Looking back over 3 seasons in the FPL, we see Hazard (like many players) tends to have a stronger home scoring record than he does away:

          14/15- 14 goals, 9 at home
          13/14- 14 goals, 10 at home
          12/13- 9 goals, 6 at home

Do have have similar stats for assists and baps (home and away)? Do these balance his home vs away returns or do they favor home returns even more?

I see you're a member, so just pop over & check out Hazard's player profile for anything more you'd like.

(Quick math says he's scored almost 70% of his goals at home so, I can't see that the assists or BP's would drastically alter something already so heavily weighted.)

Hey, I truly don't want to turn this into something adversarial where I'm stuck making a case against Hazard, because I'll lose terribly.
Ive had him for GW1 for the past 3 years.

That said, my point is, was, & will remain that Chelsea have a very so-so sched to start the year. As a result, I feel that Hazard's £11.5mil could be better spent elsewhere for two main reasons:
              1. Other Heavey Hitters have much better fixtures
              2. He isn't needed as a clear cut captain's choice

I'll 100% get Hazard, just don't *need him* over the first month or so...

is it possible to do a decent three way rotation, for 2 defender spots?

like with players A,B and C, bench one of them each week, with decent fixtures?

Without a membership here then you'll have to go out & find rotation spreadsheet.
Then, look for 3 / 4 teams that overlap with favourable fixtures.
