Following the earlier addition of former Manchester City duo Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair, Aston Villa made Idrissa Gueye their third new signing of the summer, with the midfielder joining from Lille for a fee believed to be in the region of £9 million. The Senegal international has penned a four-year contract at Villa Park.

After securing the 25-year-old’s signature, Villa boss Tim Sherwood explained he is looking to get the most out of the versatile Gueye’s attacking potential in the season ahead:

“Idrissa is a good acquisition to the squad. He has the same energy as Fabian Delph. He’s similar to Ramires. He can play flexible as well – as a No 6 in a sitting midfield role or as a No 8 box to box. Idrissa can do both of them. He wants to get the shackles off really and get box to box. That’s what he’s looking to do and we’re happy for him to do that. He wanted to come to the Premier League. He had a few options but we were delighted he decided to join us.”

THE HISTORY

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye starring for the French outfit.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, before becoming a key player during the past two seasons.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered two assists, triggering reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011 and has since racked up 23 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to open his account for his country. He started all three matches in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

THE PROSPECTS

With Fabian Delph now departed after his dramatic U-turn and last season’s loanee Tom Cleverley moving to Everton, Sherwood desperately needs to bolster his options in the centre of the park.

Gueye certainly looks an assured starter for the Villains, either in a two or three-man central midfield. Sherwood has recently utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 formations in pre-season and the latter system could see Gueye partnered by Ashley Westwood or Carlos Sanchez, with all three likely to start in a 4-3-3 unless their manager strengthens his midfield options further.

Utilised in a 4-1-2-1-2 set-up at Lille last term, the new boy averaged an effort every 78.1 minutes – granted, that’s hardly spectacular, but, as we saw upon his arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood’s attacking approach should boost his players’ prospects in the final third. Three of Delph’s four assists for the season and all three of Cleverley’s goals were produced under the new manager from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Compared to France legend Jean Tigana by former Senegal head coach Alan Giresse, Guyeye’s ball-winning ability will also be vital for Villa – he made a total of 100 tackles in Ligue 1 last season.

Costing 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Gueye will set you back the same price as wingers Scott Sinclair and Charles N’Zogbia, who will be competing for the wide positions along with the 5.5-priced Jack Grealish if Sherwood opts for a front three. Grealish’s recent injury absence has allowed Sinclair the chance to stake a claim for a starting berth, whilst Christian Benteke’s departure could even see the former Swansea man handed spot-kicks. Clearly, at that price, he could be an ideal fifth midfielder if he can convince Sherwood he’s worthy of a regular role, though there are still some question marks over Sinclair’s minutes once Sherwood has a fully fit squad. Westwood is the cheapest Villa midfielder at 4.5, and looks fairly assured of starts – despite a deep-lying role, he does have some set-piece duties in the locker, which has helped him rack up ten assists over the last three seasons.

With Delph, Benteke and Ron Vlaar all gone, though, Sherwood’s next few acquisition will go some way to determining our opinions on the Midlands outfit for the season ahead. Certainly, the Villa boss will set up his team to play with the handbrake off and Gueye may well arrive on our radars if he benefits in the same way as Delph and Cleverley prospered in the latter stages of the previous campaign.

Looking at the schedule, Villa’s opening schedule is very favourable, with the home clash against Man United in Gameweek 2 the only difficult fixture in the first six weeks of the season (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). That should provide us with the ideal opportunity to see how Gueye adapts to English football, though with Grealish just 0.5 dearer, the former Lille man has some way to go to establish himself as the most viable pick amongst Sherwood’s midfield charges.

Who to join Ivan and Kos?

    a) a 3 way rotating def. based on fixtures. Where 1 of Mings/Francis, O'Shea or Taylor plays each week. Fixtures are: AVL, NOR, SWA, LEI, nor, WAT, stk, WAT, NOR, NEW

    OR

    b) a more pricey player such as Alderweireld or Lescott starting each week with 2 x 4m def. such as Taylor and Baker on bench.

Trying to find some value in Midfield so I've looked at some stats from last year.

I've taken the number of Goals and Assists from last Season for each Midfielder and added them together, I've then removed all the players who number for this addition is less than 10. I've then divided the number of minutes that player played by the total Goals & Assists scored to give us a kind of minutes per goal contribution (whether it be Goals scored or Goal Assisted).

Here's the top 25 for Minutes per either a Goal or Assist:

    Di María - 109mins (3 Goals, 12 Assists)
    Silva - 110mins (12 Goals, 12 Assists)
    Sánchez - 123mins (16 Goals, 8 Assists)
    Fàbregas - 131mins (3 Goals, 19 Assists)
    Milner - 135mins (5 Goals, 8 Assists)
    Hazard - 141mins (14 Goals, 10 Assists)
    Chadli - 142mins (11 Goals, 6 Assists)
    Mané - 142mins (11 Goals, 4 Assists)
    Oscar - 144mins (6 Goals, 8 Assists)
    Adam - 151mins (7 Goals, 3 Assists)
    Sigurdsson - 158mins (7 Goals, 10 Assists)
    Tadic - 158mins (4 Goals, 9 Assists)
    Cazorla - 166mins (7 Goals, 11 Assists)
    Ramsey - 167mins (6 Goals, 6 Assists)
    Walters - 173mins (8 Goals, 6 Assists)
    Bolasie - 173mins (4 Goals, 12 Assists)
    Mata - 177mins (9 Goals, 4 Assists)
    Sterling - 179mins (7 Goals, 10 Assists)
    Özil - 186mins (4 Goals, 6 Assists)
    Herrera - 187mins (6 Goals, 4 Assists)
    Henderson - 204mins (6 Goals, 10 Assists)
    Yaya Touré - 214mins (10 Goals, 1 Assists)
    Puncheon - 217mins (6 Goals, 7 Assists)
    Eriksen - 224mins (10 Goals, 4 Assists)
    Coutinho - 233mins (5 Goals, 7 Assists)

Interesting to see Fàbregas scored 3 and assisted 19 (total of 22) and Hazard scored 14 and assisted 10 (total of 24), yes more points for a goal but is the 2.5 extra worth it? If your planning on having Hazard as a captain option maybe yes?

Fàbregas, Chadli & Mané are the ones that interest me.

Just to add there are 2 player above Di Maria but they contributed less than a combined total of 10 for goals or assists so they weren't included in the calculation, they were:

      Aarons - 66mins (1 Goal, 1 Assist)
      Walcott - 75mins (5 Goals, 1 Assist)

Hazard can only be justified if you are going to captain him regularly same with any exp mid or forward.

I think a calculation based on attacking points (5.5/goal, 3/assist considering baps) could provide an interesting perspective.

It is a major flaw of a lot of fpl players imo. They only look to the first 2 or 3 weeks then end up wcing early and still being none the wiser re form, tactics how new players will bed in etc etc. The game is a marathon not a sprint, just pick safe players you think will do well for the first 6-10 gws and use your ft transfers for the players that fly out of the gates.

PS people make the same mistake when playing their wc's imo. I'd happily take an average gw (and usually end up with one) the week I play my wc if I make up points over the longer term.

Yeah, I've got one - format your RMTs so that they are legible 🙂 Here, fixed for you:

Ruddy | Butland (same as mine, so I like)
Koscielny | Terry | Huth | Francis | Targett (a bit spendy with both Kosc and Terry, but could work)
      Ozil | Hazard | Milner | Walcott | Sidwell (strong, but I'd advise against a double-Arse midfield)
Lukaku | Wilson | Rooney (Lukaku is a no, others OK)

I agree. People are swayed by his hat trick last season IMO. He was largely inconsistent all season at 2m less. He'll have to heavily up his output and consistency this season to be worth 2m more. And with a wide array of options at only 0.5 they seem more sensible

So I was at the Benfica ICC match against the Red Bulls last night and it was a good experience as RBNY fan for a few reasons
    1) Great match, Benfica played with High Intensity constantly and it was great to watch and as it was pre-season it was delightful to see the anguish of the players as they were only just getting to know each's habits and movements on the pitch - Ola John and Silvio were tripping over and yelling at eachother for a good while before John swapped wings with Carcela-Gonzalez

    2) Red Bulls won, always nice to see that!!

    3) The stadium's seats honestly saw a good deal more Benfica fans than RBNY ones
so early on when I saw Adel Taarabt live in person for my first time literally right in front of me I couldn't help but remark "Wow he really is that fat and lazy in real life" amidst groans and head in hands from benfica fans around 😆

Yaya was in my first draft but taken him out now. He could be a v decent price though! And I've gone Walcott for that extra £0.5m. So basically mane and walcott instead of yaya and ozil

following on from the post above, why are people saying Chadli is a bad pick? He's had quite a high points per minute last season?

First RMT here and I am relatively happy. Bit light upfront but will be upgraded to Aguero when fit.

    Butland, (Ruddy)
    Ivan, Mert, Cedric (Richards, PVA)
    Hazard, Mane, Ritchie, Silva (Hendo)
    Rooney, Wilson, Deeney

No Ars attack is a worry

Mane > Ozil/Rambo/Caz if you can free up 0.5 somewhere.

That "somewhere" should probably be Richards > 4.0 who will be bench fodder anyways.

    Good afternoon one and all!

How are we on this fine grey Irish afternoon?

Teams nailed on now and no more tinkering? Thought so.

What have you decided on for now? Currently looking at a 3-5-2 here

Ok definitely rolling out 3-4-3, just a couple decisions I need to make.

Eg. Ivan or Azpi - two of sterling, Ozil, Walcott - Ritchie or Milner

          Stuff like that

This season seems a good one for 3-5-2 but when you look at the value in midfield

Pretty settled. Any advancements at Spurs regarding Berahino and/or Bolasie and I'll look at Tadic over Chadli.

      How's your team looking?

    Current draft:

    Speroni // Butland
    Ivanovic // Koscienlny // Huth // Mathews // Cedric
    Hazard // Walcott // Chadli // Ritchie // Ibe
    Sakho // Benteke // Rooney

I think Ibe could be a hit this season.

Anything ITB? I'd say that's quite a lot of money invested in defence, for which you could perhaps improve on Chadli. Just an extra 1.5 and you could upgrade to Ozil/Cazorla, or an extra 2.0 and upgrade to Fabregas. Otherwise I like it a lot.

Kos has most trouble staying healthy / Really needs the backup more than Merte / Also Kos has difficulty with bruiser strikers like Tekkers / Just my opinion i could be wrong

So this is how my team looks like now:

    Ruddy, Butland

    Ivan, Clyne, Williams, Huth, Saylor

    Haz, Ozil, Depay, Hendo, Wanyama

    Rooney, Pelle, Sakho

Will probably WC after GW3 to get Aguero and make some other changes.

    Suggestions are welcome 🙂
    Thanks!
