Following the earlier addition of former Manchester City duo Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair, Aston Villa made Idrissa Gueye their third new signing of the summer, with the midfielder joining from Lille for a fee believed to be in the region of £9 million. The Senegal international has penned a four-year contract at Villa Park.

After securing the 25-year-old’s signature, Villa boss Tim Sherwood explained he is looking to get the most out of the versatile Gueye’s attacking potential in the season ahead:

“Idrissa is a good acquisition to the squad. He has the same energy as Fabian Delph. He’s similar to Ramires. He can play flexible as well – as a No 6 in a sitting midfield role or as a No 8 box to box. Idrissa can do both of them. He wants to get the shackles off really and get box to box. That’s what he’s looking to do and we’re happy for him to do that. He wanted to come to the Premier League. He had a few options but we were delighted he decided to join us.”

THE HISTORY

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye starring for the French outfit.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, before becoming a key player during the past two seasons.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered two assists, triggering reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011 and has since racked up 23 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to open his account for his country. He started all three matches in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

THE PROSPECTS

With Fabian Delph now departed after his dramatic U-turn and last season’s loanee Tom Cleverley moving to Everton, Sherwood desperately needs to bolster his options in the centre of the park.

Gueye certainly looks an assured starter for the Villains, either in a two or three-man central midfield. Sherwood has recently utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 formations in pre-season and the latter system could see Gueye partnered by Ashley Westwood or Carlos Sanchez, with all three likely to start in a 4-3-3 unless their manager strengthens his midfield options further.

Utilised in a 4-1-2-1-2 set-up at Lille last term, the new boy averaged an effort every 78.1 minutes – granted, that’s hardly spectacular, but, as we saw upon his arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood’s attacking approach should boost his players’ prospects in the final third. Three of Delph’s four assists for the season and all three of Cleverley’s goals were produced under the new manager from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Compared to France legend Jean Tigana by former Senegal head coach Alan Giresse, Guyeye’s ball-winning ability will also be vital for Villa – he made a total of 100 tackles in Ligue 1 last season.

Costing 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Gueye will set you back the same price as wingers Scott Sinclair and Charles N’Zogbia, who will be competing for the wide positions along with the 5.5-priced Jack Grealish if Sherwood opts for a front three. Grealish’s recent injury absence has allowed Sinclair the chance to stake a claim for a starting berth, whilst Christian Benteke’s departure could even see the former Swansea man handed spot-kicks. Clearly, at that price, he could be an ideal fifth midfielder if he can convince Sherwood he’s worthy of a regular role, though there are still some question marks over Sinclair’s minutes once Sherwood has a fully fit squad. Westwood is the cheapest Villa midfielder at 4.5, and looks fairly assured of starts – despite a deep-lying role, he does have some set-piece duties in the locker, which has helped him rack up ten assists over the last three seasons.

With Delph, Benteke and Ron Vlaar all gone, though, Sherwood’s next few acquisition will go some way to determining our opinions on the Midlands outfit for the season ahead. Certainly, the Villa boss will set up his team to play with the handbrake off and Gueye may well arrive on our radars if he benefits in the same way as Delph and Cleverley prospered in the latter stages of the previous campaign.

Looking at the schedule, Villa’s opening schedule is very favourable, with the home clash against Man United in Gameweek 2 the only difficult fixture in the first six weeks of the season (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). That should provide us with the ideal opportunity to see how Gueye adapts to English football, though with Grealish just 0.5 dearer, the former Lille man has some way to go to establish himself as the most viable pick amongst Sherwood’s midfield charges.

Upgrade is one thing. Completely restructuring the squad over a couple of months? Usually not the smartest idea. Chemistri will be nowhere to be found in the first few months. Suddenly captaining Lukaku GW1 doesn't sount that crazy 😀

I personally don't like Wilson/Deeney and would rather have Defoe at the same price, but apart from that I think it's a great team.

      What is your Aguero plan?

See if Gomez starts for Liverpool which I hope he does so downgrade defense and Walcott to Ozil then either Costa or Rooney for Aguero.

So here is my team with some of my thoughts behind the picks (sorry if the post is slightly long)

    Mignolet/Ruddy
    Azpi - Koscielny - O'Shea/Morgan (S.Taylor)
Fabregas - Ozil - Chadli - Young (Wanyama)
    Costa - Rooney - Sakho

Wanyama & S.Taylor as permanent bench players.

I have 2.5m in the bank to swap Costa to Aguero as soon as he is back. I prefer the funds ready in the bank so it is just one easy transfer rather than attempting to save 2 free transfers or risking needing to take a points hit. I will bring him in GW2 if confirmed starting so this makes this easy to do.

Mignolet/Ruddy does't seem to crop up on many RMT's on here but I really like their perfect Home & Away rotation. Mignolet was the 2nd highest scoring keeper last season and his first four home games are BOU, WHM, NOR, VIL.

Morgan will become Huth if the former is not fit for the start of the season. I know S.Taylor won't play but he will be my 3rd choice sub each week and I am happy to have a non-starting player.

Chadli/Young may not be alot of peoples cup of tea but Young @ 6m is a bargain for now. Playing preseason, Di Maria looking to leave and has seemed to get minutes fairly easily under LVG. IF Man Utd sign a player in his place (later in the transfer window) then I can swap him out to the best mid priced option that has shown himself over the first few weeks. Chadli gets points when he plays and I think he will play. At 7m he will justify the price tag easily so long as he starts. I like both Milner/Henderson but for the start i'm not interested in picking either.

Main negatives are no Hazard but i'm on the half of the fence that says Fabregas + 2.5m is sufficient over Hazard and will be sticking to it for now.

I think the team is set up well enough to make midfield/striker tweaks easily enough early on without too much change and should hopefully stand me in good stead for the start of the season.

    Any thoughts would be welcome.

I guess it's hard to really give thoughts, if you've already given your reasoning for all the picks and why those players are staying in your team. Does look strong though. I think we(united) will sign another attacker before the end, which would imo spell curtains for young(maybe not to start with). I'm also unsure he'll score many but should get assists.

If Aguero is ruled out of gameweek 1, i'm personally waiting till 3 or 4 to bring him in, rather than against chelsea. Would be via 2 transfers(hopefully no hit). I'm guessing O'shea will be a starter as he's captain, but some think it will be Kaboul/Coates with O'shea dropped.

Like your front 3, feel it might be bettter to start off with someone like Sakho and then see which of the promoted/cheap strikers look the best options after a few weeks.

        Thanks for you thoughts Demi.

I agree Young will no doubt be a short-term choice but i'm hoping by the time he starts getting dropped for the new attacker that another similar priced player will have emerged to swap over too.

Yeah i've considered waiting until GW3-4 for Sergio which would give me more time to asses the rest of my team and decide who needs trimming down. My only worry is without the easy plan to get him in I may use too many transfers butchering my team to accommodate him.

I think agree with Sakho and think he could do very well in GW2&3 alone and then maybe moved along to make way for Aguero funds once the cheaper strikers have had 3-4 games to prove themselves. Although I must admit I am considering starting with Defoe instead as I feel he could be a decent option at 5.5m.

Good point re my bad timing 😉

If i'm being perfectly honest I don't even want Costa in my team, the only reason he is there is because for the first GW or two he is just saving my Aguero funds.

Here's a slightly interesting one for you:

    A) Chadli + Huth

    B) Ivanovic + Cedric

Try to ignore the formation 🙂

That is essentially the difference between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3

well the top is 0.5 cheaper so its really
          A) Chadli
          B) Ivanovic
          which is interesting
i reckon 4-3-3 may be better than 3-5-2

Will the new bps effect Hazard/Costa much?

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 8 months ago

Over the season Hazard may lose 1 or two BAPs tops to Azpi. Costa will still be the same 1 goal no baps or 2 goals 3 baps that he was before

I guess Sterling is back on the menu.. sorry to all those that had him as differential!
Think this team will work without Hazard?

    Schmeichel
    Azpi Koscielny Sakho
    Fabregas Walcott Ozil Sterling
    Rooney Benteke Sakho

That's almost exactly what I have atm, but with Depay + Costa instead of Wally + Rooney.

Yeah will monitor Depay + Aguero as replacements for Wally + Rooney after some gameweeks

I'm surprised nobody seems to have Moreno I'm their teams

@5.0 attacking full back for a top side who is almost nailed on is surely a great pick?

Do I keep .5 itb to have an easy switch from Rooney to Kun by doing Wally to a 7.0 when the time comes
or do I just use the .5 to start the season on turning Memphis into Sterling/Fabregas

Wally to Ritchie when the time comes will be a good move and allows you to spend that extra 6.0 Bournemouth fixtures GWs 4-8: LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT

**Extra 0.5, because Ritchie is 6.0

90% I'd say - can't see Rodgers putting Lovren in for a while

      No but should start.

Lovren has played a lot in pre-season is a slight concern.

No. Skrtel, Clyne and Moreno are.
I personally think Sakho will start the season, but reading the Echo yesterday, they believe Lovren will get the nod.

Do you think Fabregas will score well enough to make up for not having Hazard or are people just trying to justify his inclusion because they can't fit Haz in?

If you want to miss out on 70-some points, then sure, Fabregas is a good replacement. 🙂

Try to fit him in somehow. There is no true substitute for Haz.

IMO going Hazardless is fine, but if so you can still have a quality midfield without Fabregas either
