Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

I'm sure this has been tackled already, so I'm sorry for any redundancy, but: Best 4.5 midfielder is?

    A) Wanyama

    B) Surman

    C) Barry

    D) Other (?)

I'm on Wanyama at the moment, but find the pick somewhat uninspiring.

Same here. But he plays most of the time, scores on occasion, can get an occasional point for a shutout, etc. Boring but safe, right? Which might be all you want from a guy who only counts when one of your other players ends up sitting for some reason.

    Hi Guys,

Just sign the membership, I appreciate you rate my team (1M in the bank)

    Cech
    Azpi - Clyne - Jones
    Hazard (C) - Sterling - Ozil - Puncheon - Wanyama
    Costa - Lukaku
    (Guzan - O'Shea - Huth - Graham)

Would play Huth over Wanyama for sure.
It looks like with your 4.5 mid and 4.5 forward you're attempting a 4-4-2?

In that case use the 1m to get someone more nailed on for Jones and find a good rotation for the other 4.5 defenders

Not a fan of Puncheon over Cabaye or Bolasie. Hazard and Costa are making the rest of your team look quite unbalanced...I'd have a miss at one and improve your 3rd forward if you want to go 343 or improve Wanyama if you want to stick with 352.

I'm starting to flip on Cabaye since reading how poor his goals/assist totals were for PSG.

On the other hand, I don't know where he played there. Assuming that Pardew will use him in a similar role as Newcastle where he was quite productive.

Hi guys, would much appreciate an RMT. Think I'm almost set..

    Butland (Hennessey)
    Azpi, Mertesacker, Cedric (Huth, Targett)
    Fabregas, Ozil, Santi, Sterling (Wanyama)
    Costa, Rooney, Bojan

It all seems nicely balanced, although I'm thinking of swapping Santi for Depay.
    Thoughts please?

Definitely agree that this is a good team and you are almost there.

Is Bojan set to start i haven't really been following stokes preseason? That's something I would double check.

As for Depay I personally am a little hesitant to bring him in for the start. I want to see how he settles in the premier league before I draft him in. But I would still say switch out Santi (you don't need too arsenal mids for the start I don't think). Maybe go with a liverpool player? (Coutinho, Milner, Hendo, etc) or you could go for Mane possible. Then you could up grade Ozil t-> Walcott or Sterling -> Silva I think are some possibilities

      Lots of un-nailed players imo.
Purely personal opinion (and hope) as a Stoke fan though:

      Butland
      Johnson, Shawcross, Muniesa, Pieters
      van Ginkel, Whelan
Arnie, Bojan (although will most probably be Adam against Liverpool), Odemwingie/Affelay
Diouf/Joselu (really unsure who Sparky prefers).

The only nailed on ones are Butland, Shawcross, Pieters and Arnie imo.

    Finally distilled my connundrum

    A: Ivan + Silva + Wally

    B: Azpi + Hazard + Ozil

I prefer Ivan over Azpi but not sure if I prefer by as much as 1m. Because Ivan goes forward so much Azpi rarely gets attacking returns.

Silva and Hazard. Mixed. Silva is less explosive and team is missing Aguero. Hazard is too expensive for unknown form at the start of the season (plus high ownership means likely rapid price drops). Hazard is rumoured to be looking porky back from holidays.

Heart says Walcott, for a punt. Explosive pre-season. May play striker. Head says Ozil is undervaled, nailed and will tick over for the entire season.

I'm guessing most are facing a similar dilemma. I've landed on keeping Hazard in my team. My thinking is that if I start the season with no Hazard and no Aguero, there's a good chance I'm going to have a headache trying to get them both in later, might end up having to take points hits in order to do it, and possibly lose ground early to those who have one/both. So I'm choosing to limit my headache to one: drafting in Aguero after four or five weeks.

      1. dmhomag
        • 11 Years

Yes! As you can see getting Hazard back in will take 2-3 transfers, so will definitely have to WC by week 4 if Hazard starts the season on a flyer.

Ha this looks like it will make or break the season either way. Get it wrong and my team will be dead by week 4. Even with a WC I'll be chasing for the remainder of the season.

And that's why I'd go with B. It's dangerous NOT to have Hazard and also risky to have Wally only to see him split time with Giroud and Sanchez over the first few weeks. But I know others feel differently.

Yep. I'm starting to lean towards Tadic too.

Although he's not 100% nailed, he's pretty close to it (at least as close as Chadli) is on pens, has all other set pieces unless JWP is playing, has great fixtures and as you say, his stats over the whole season are very impressive.

Not that Chadli is a poor option, I still think he is terrific value. Maybe both could be an option

Yeah i honestly think he's nailed, Jrod/Long are fighting for one spot imo. With pens, i think it is actually unknown when Jrod is playing buy not sure there's a reason why Tadic would lose them.

Yeah Chadli is a beast too, I made a beast of a team yesterday that had both.
Pretty much my team above with Sterling to Chadli and Benteke to Costa.

With EL there's always the chance of rotation but yes he should start most. I'd say it'll be:

                Tadic Mane Davis/Long/Jrod

Behind Pelle, Mane and Tadic could switch too.

Oh, was Jrod on pens for Soton two seasons ago? Interesting. I was hardly into FPL then but that could mean something.

Yeah I saw that team. Costa isn't for me in FPL but it did look quite balanced.

Lambert was still there then. According to Lucy the issue is J rod is also a very good penalty taker and took them at Burnley, something to monitor for sure but again I don't see why Tadic would lose them.

Yeah the way i see Haz vs Costa is this:

Haz scores one goal - 9/10 pts
Costa scores one goal - 5/6 pts

Neither, I can see Tadic remaining on them tbh.

Agree. Add that too lots of cards for Costa and there's your answer on Costa v Hazard 😀

The Gk's are in hope that Hennessey to WBA finally goes through, would mean i would have WBA keepers for 8.5m. Defence is planned for an 8 week rotation because i will be WC'ing sometime within the first 8 gws. Have 0.5 itb so can easily go Ruddy/Butland or something similar.

Who do you like at that price? I personally think Sterling offers a lot of explosive potential

Pretty good. I think I was talking to you last night about Francis - not a fan.

Other then that it's good, I would try and find an extra 0.5 to do Sterling -> Silva.

Benteke I'm not sure of but if you think he's worth the punt then go for it

Cheers man, the BOU/NOR/WAT rot is as follows for first 10:

AVL, WBA, STO, LEI, BOU, SUN, PAL, WAT, STO, WBA

Francis is also an assist machine.

I think Silva is overpriced personally, don't want him. that 0.5 is probably gonna end up in keepers with the Hennessey deal not really moving.

Lack of captain options GW2, so Benteke is very important imo, is he is in form gw 1 he will be the standout option for gw 2 i reckon.

          No worries.

Did you see my comment last night? I said rotation is important but the quality of the defence is more important IMO. Bournemouth will struggle defensively.

no sorry i missed it - have just gone back and seen it.

i am normally like that - have had Sunderland and Leicester defenders most of pre season. Trying something a bit different this time. The Bournemouth home fixtures couldn't get much better and even if they struggle defensively i think Francis compensates with his attacking potential

              All good.

Well is that's your chosen approach go for it. But relying on attacking returns from a promoted defender is ludicrous imo. Look at Trippier - as attacking as it gets for a promoted defender and he ended the season with what, 0 goals 2 assists?

The PL is a completely different beast.

But i don't think i am RELYING on attacking returns. Those fixtures are execellent for potential defensive returns.

                Tripper 4 assists. Decent.

Well they won't keep to many clean sheets, so how else will you get points from him? Attacking points, which look unlikely to come in abundance. You may get lucky with one assist but clean sheet potential should be the reason you pick defenders

You don't need much firepower in back 5 (or 7 including GKs). With right rotation you can do just fine, but on the other hand you can build much stronger attack excluding players like Ivanovic and Kosc from your squad. Check last season's stats for defenders .. only Chelsea defenders are high in the rankings .. City was second in the league and their best defender is not even in top 20 🙂

What about double Arsenal attack over double Chelsea attack? 🙂

      Fabregas -> Cazorla

You would be just fine with Sakho -> Deeney .. Watford with some quality singings and Deeney is their captain, lone striker in 4-2-3-1 and on penalties 🙂

On than you can also upgrade Targett 😉

      I would say Deeney 🙂

On penalties, captain, lone striker in 4-2-3-1, Watford with some quality singings and coach trying to play some flowing attacking style of football 🙂

On the other hand Sakho is proven PL quality in solid team but I just can't get over Bilic as their head coach .. they could dissapoint big time this year

Simply because there are so many proven options at 0.5 less. It seems risky going with Payet + Sakho when for 0.5 less you could have Chadli/Tadic/Milner/Hendo + Sakho if that makes sense.

    Fabi - Henn
    Ivan - Kos - Morgan - O'Shea - ???
    Hazard - Sterling - Ramsey - Ritchie - ???
    Rooney - Benteke - ???

    A) 3-4-3. Saylor (fixture cover for O'Shea/Morgan), Anya (fixture cover for Ritchie), D Sakho
    B) 4-4-2/4-3-3. M Sakho, Wanyama (bench fodder), Deeney (fixture rotate with Ritchie)

      Hi guys,

Have been a non member last year and decided to bite the bullet and sign up. Last year I got off to a shocker and was behind the 8 ball for the next 37 game weeks. I am desperate to avoid that this time round, so I have a plan that involves this team for the first 4 gameweeks then wildcard to get aguero in/bandwagon cheapies/form players etc.

Please kindly RMT and give me any opinions you may have:

      Ruddy/Schmeichel

Azpil, Koscielny, Francis, Targett, S. Taylor

      Milner, Ozil, Hazard, Mane, Anya

      Rooney, Benteke, Pelle.

      * This team is generally designed for the first 4 gameweeks. Any suggestions?

Thoughts on Bellerin - is the starting RB spot his to lose at the moment? He obviously isn't nailed on, but has he done enough to start the season as first choice RB and what is the view on Debuchy...from an Arsenal fan perspective

      He is currently first choice.

But I fear that it turns into another Kolarov/ Clichy situation, where one is first choice, but is still rotated every 2-3 games.
