Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

If you could afford either one of these, which would you pick?

    A. Ritchie
    B. Milner (have Benteke)

I can afford Milner but Ritchie seems even better value for what he could offer

Forget team value in GW2. Get a good GW1 score and it will automatically go up.

dont do it. value is never a reason to spend wildcard, you'll probably make 0.2 in the process. there will come a time you actually Need to use your wc. looking at that team, theres no reason for a wildcard even.

I wouldn't recommend WCing in GW2, but if you're set on that then play the fixtures for GW1.

There's no point having Kane at Old Trafford, double Pool attack away at Stoke, and half of your back '4' playing away.

Get some Leicester and Everton players in there for a start, and maybe another Arsenal mid too.

What are the merits of Benteke vs Sakho as a 3rd striker?

Longer term I think Benteke will do better, but over 3 games they could get similar returns.

    Sakho makes Aguero transition easier.
Tekkers is probably a longer term player that you hold.

    Which to start with?

Hah, this is the key question.

I actually have 2 teams - one with Haz and one without. The other team has Costa Roo Sakho strike force, so you can see how easy I can get Kun when needed.

With this team, I see to scenarios - 1. Lose Roo for him and get Depay for some MUN; or 2. Lose Pelle (despite playing NOR in GW4 since I might still keep Mane) and take some money off Payet and some others

For those of you interested in the draft experience of Dugout FC, there's a league called "early drafting" that's drafting tomorrow at 7PM. I'm going to use this one as a sort of "trial run" to see how the draft works, as well as get ideas of players who get picked up too early / too late. Feel free to join, there are still 7 open spots.

That's what I want to find out. It says each team has 2mins per pick, and the league has 10 teams, each team picks 18 players! So that can amount to a lovely total of 6 hours if everyone drags their feet.

Never read the fine print. Pulled out of the top league when the draft time wasn't great. 6 hours max isn't too bad & it should cut down a bit. Just need to create your list in advance.

Indeed. One thing that I found annoying is that I created a shortlist for the FFS league (I'm in division 34!), but then for this other league I'm supposed to create a new shortlist, when I would rather use the same one. I guess I'll have the other one opened in a separate.

Anyway, hope to see you there later. Cheers!

I've had experience with NBA basketball live drafts, and they do last much less than the "maximum". Usually closer to the end some managers leave, and if the draft is well setup we stop losing any time on their picks, they are just automatically chosen from the shortlist

Thinking of starting with a defense of
    Ruddy Butland
Cedric Toby Lescott Huth Oshea .. Cheap and good fixtures for most weeks till GW 12(when i plan to wildcard) .. The way i see it is Cedric/Toby/Lescott and Huth are all underpriced by 0.5 each so my defense looks cheap on paper but is worth far more 🙂 .. Who else going for a cheapish defense(though three 5.0's is not really that cheap).

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years

Gives 3 good options with good fixtures(with a good backup most weeks) every week till GW 12.. only GW 7 is a bit of a problem

So Basically Schmarzer at the back? i'm considering that to if i need the 0.5.. cant think of more than 2 good 4.5 options at the back so cant really make a cheaper defense here

        1. dribbler

you could go LEI/SUN/NOR and then WAT fill in the tough weeks just nicely...it works for about 3 months anyway...that's if you want a £69.5m attack

          1. dribbler
            • 16 Years

and you can replace your £4.0m guy with Mert for £1.5m in 2 easy transfers as soon as you identify one bargain

the upside is that you can get a pretty good team with Aguero, Hazard and a bunch of other cracking players

but it could be painful in low scoring weeks...you need to expect some fluctuation from week to week and keep the faith

Priced too high for someone you wouldn't captain.

Maybe I misunderstood what you implied.

No I wouldn't captain either of those players unless form and fixture are heavily in their favour.

Silva is 10m. For me, Silva is not someone I would captain ahead of say Rooney or Costa or Hazard. If the intent is to keep him for the whole season, please go ahead...he will prove to tremendous value.

But keeping in mind he's 10m and will probably make way for Aguero in GW4...and plays wba CHE eve the first 3 games, it diminishes his appeal for me as a 10m-priced midfielder.

Can't afford Silva + Hazard, and would much rather have Hazard. Only twice last season did Silva score/assist in consecutive games. Haz was slow until December, but starting on 12/13 went 5 games in a row with a goal/assist and he was solid for the 2nd half.

The minimum price you can pay to have a playable player in fpl in every spot comes to around 70 million.. so you only have 30 million to upgrade 15 spots to get points.. so every million counts. so hence why Ritchie over hendo could work 🙂

Just want to see what people's perceptions on the current EPL defenses..
Leaving Chelsea, Arsenal, Manutd, Man City out of it(all teams with defenders priced above 5.5 basically) which sides do you think have the best defense in the EPL in order from best to worst(or could potentially improve in defense this season).. for eg. my opinion would be

Soton > Wba > Spurs > Liv >Sun >Swa with the rest having the same potential and Villa/Bournemouth having the worst defenses

It's only people's opinions so dont bash them

Pretty happy with my 5 mids so far - Hazard, Ozil, Fab, Ritchie and Wanyama.

    Özil, Depay, Mané, Yaya

    Giroud, Costa, Rooney

    Subs: Schwarzer, Westwood, Baker, Mariappa
