Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

    Repost lads!

Which option do you guys prefer?

    A) Benteke + 4.0 def + 8.5 mid (Yaya/Mata/etc, already have Ars mid)
    B) Pelle + 4.5 def + 8.5 mid (Yaya/Mata/etc, already have Ars mid)
    C) Pelle + 4.0 def + Fabregas

If C it would mean I would have both Fabregas + Hazard in my mids. At the moment I'm leaning towards C. Currently have no Southampton "cover" and they have great fixtures to start the season (Unlike Liverpool). Pelle has also been on fire during pre-season and is a proven/nailed goal-scorer. Thoughts?

Right. Following previous post, here is my rough outline. After 3-odd weeks, I will probably want to shift Ivanovic temporarily, providing Koscielny and Fonte(Skrtel) are working well. So, I will move from this:

    GW 1:

    Schmeichel
    Ivanovic, Fonte(Skrtel), Koscielny, Francis
    Hazard(c), Cazorla(vc), Chadli
    Agüero, Falcao, C. Wilson

Fabianski; Wanyama, Ki Sung-Yeung, Prödl … 0.0 ITB

    to this:

    GW 1:

    Schmeichel
    Fonte(Skrtel), Koscielny, Cameron
    Hazard, Sánchez(c), Chadli, Ki Sung-Yeung
    Agüero(vc), Falcao, C. Wilson

Fabianski; Wanyama, Prödl, Francis … 0.0 ITB

Subject always to bandwagons etc. Anyway, just a thought ...

Personally I feel all the big names hurt the rest of your team and would advise a more balanced approach. Not a big fan of Ki (best 5.5 around but still think there are better options), Falcao (unnecessary gamble imo) and Cameron (rotation?)

      Doos i love your approach.

I can see clearly what your intention is -get the best captain options and use the cheap enablers/bandwagons to allow for them. I tend to spend less in defence but i can see this working as well. Nice.

          Yes.

Cons: won't start every game in all likelihood. May take some time to get back near his best.

Pros: Chelsea will be an attacking team at the start of the season and will likely play 4-1-3-2 with Falcao and Costa in some easier games. Falcao likely to be a playing substitute otherwise. Mourinho thinks he can get him back near his AM form when he played very well with Costa and was the most sought after striker in the world.

There is risk with Falcao. But there are more pros than cons.

I guess this is the type of punt that will only be evaluated after GW1, or GW10 as Doosra will prefer. 10 pages of discussion in pre-season will not be relevant in this matter till the evidence is there. For those waiting to LoL at the choice they might already have bookmarked this. But I have Lukaku(c) in GW1, who am I to call someone out on a punt? 😉

Just a quiet heads-up. In the all-too-brief period round about Christmas, when von Bile actually played Falcao, he shot up to number two in my "Deadly Assassins" table ...

omg. did not think he would have been anywhere near. hmm, if he gets minutes he definitely will score. I guess you are confident that Mourinho is true to his words that he will give him a good amount of minutes. Mourinho's words can be slippery though.
The moment Falcao starts and scores, your differential is gone though. Same if Costa gets injured.

yeah wasn't planning on letting go, im not sold on chadli's minutes even though he's a solid option when he's on. yaya is still a bargain imo, and not planning on doubling up arsenal mids

    Draft #864

    Schmeichel/Guzan or Myhill

    Aspi/kosc/Cedric/O Shea/Targett

    Haz/Sterling/Walcott/Depay/King

    Bentekkers/Kane/Wilson

    Any thoughts?
Clearly I'm forgoing Rooney, Costa & Aguero in favour of what I believe will be high scoring mids from their respective teams.

I love your Sterling, Walcott and Depay punts. I have 2/3 myself. If I could fit Sterling in, I would. Love the risk. However, I don't think Kane is a great option. Overpriced IMO. Looks like it will be hard to fit the forwards you have stated if you do need to transfer them in.

Probably a question a lot of people are asking. I think in the long run, A because you could feel comfortable captaining Rooney or Hazard, whereas Fabregas isn't really explosive enough to captain

We all have stats in our heads and various tools available online for our analysis.

So how do you try to differentiate yourself from the millions of other managers for those 1-2 punts which you allow yourself from time-to-time?

Can you share some of your biases?

Below are some of mine that I superstitiously believe in without stats to back me up 😉

    1. When a new manager is installed, the forwards will be trying to impress and will have many shots at goal early in the season. Cue save points for opposition keeper.

    2. After a deal is renewed for a player at present club, his performance drops because he has lesser incentive to impress.

    3. Any new appointment at a relegation club gives a boost for 2-3 GWs, especially among defenders.

Any other whimsical ways you play your way around FPL?

waching the games most important. player can be good and not translate into points if bad luck. ahead of the curve get him in even before the first big score. also, not to hang on to some early bandwagon even with a value drop, gotta have the balls to move on. the 'template' changes quite rapidly early on.

Right, I do believe watching the games is very important to discover a player before others come around to noticing his scores. Helped me a lot last season.

Last year I tried to be brave and dropped my Soton GK+2 defs (who I had since around GW5, in preparation for their 'tough' fixtures around early december. Had to get them back in January ;(

1)Keep it simple. Don't delve into the stats too much.
2)Pick form players and always go form over fixture.
3)Have a template team with one or two differentials.

Do you prefer the differentials in the attack? Very hard to keep track of form players plus maintain differentials, I took too many hits last season.

    B) Butland + 4.0

    C) Butland + Ruddy

    D) Adrian + 4.0

I have been playing with various drafts, interested in your thoughts on this one:

    Schmeichel, Ruddy
    Azpi, Mertesacker, Cedric, Francis, 4.5
    Hazard, Walcott, Siggy, Ritchie, 4.5
    Rooney, Benteke and Pelle

I could go with a 7.0 mid instead of Siggy and upgrade Rooney to Costa for GW1. I am aware of the difficult GW1 for Rooney and Siggy.

Hi all, first draft of the season coming up...

Having unexpectedly finished as high as 15th overall last season, I only opened the FPL on Sunday for the first time. Therefore I'm not fully up to date on everything that's happened with the rules and especially the lineups and fixtures etc.

Anyway, here goes the 1st RMT, many more to come over the season I believe :p

    Ruddy-Butland
    Azpilicueta-Koscielny-O'Shea-Cedric-Morgan
    Hazard-Özil-Silva-Ritchie-Wanyama
    Rooney-Benteke-Deeney

First of all, I'm not too sure that Silva is a good pick. Not too sure at all.

Secondly, do you think it's too much to have both Ritchie and Deeney in the team as both are very much unproven on this level?

The team will most likely change a lot in the next week and a half. I'm only pretty much set on having Rooney, Benteke, Hazard and Wanyama at the moment. Conceivably everyone else can still be moved out.

Anyway, I appreciate if you have any comments

Really good team! Just wondering why everyone is putting in Wanyama when he isn't a prolific point getter? Is there something i'm missing?

Özils form at the moment is very good, so at 8.5m he seems lika a very good pick for the first few GW's

Would consider not "being preety much set" on Wanyama because of very high selection. Prettymuch nailed, but still very few points, so risk for player decrease imo if (when) someone better comes up

I like it. Very similar to what I have right now. Watch out for Morgan - go with Huth perhaps?

Silva's a great pick, but slightly overpriced for me + fixtures tough-ish.

Obvious move is to go with Sterling and upgrade Ritchie to a 7m

    2. Aguero (if he does not start GW1, same as Alexis, ~15% selection)
    3. Target? (will probably only figure very few matches, but still a 4m player)
    4. Bentaleb? (Everyone picking Wanyama as 4.5m option, migh switch here)

    ##Decreases##
    1. Wanyama, very high selection rate, could be risky
    2.

    ##Risk/Reward-section##
    1. Walcott, close to 10% selection, not 100% nailed, but good form
    2. Kane, high selection on ~32%, will need a very good start to increase, and "like last year" to not decrease

Targett will be 3.8 by GW6. Don't go near. Walcott could 8.8 at some point when Alexis gets back.

Targett got under 2% ownership. Surely won`t drop much if anything.

atm he is selected by 1.9%, so high decrease not very possible atm IMO. But on the other hand, wont a big increase be probable either, so upside pretty low anyway maybe
