Having analysed the Sky Sports Fantasy game player list across each position, our next article looks to assess the formation options, discussing the factors that play a part in our decision making when setting up our team and planning transfers.

The Sky Sports offers the opportunity to set your XI up in six different options: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2, 4-5-1 and 3-4-3.

That clearly offers a myriad of choices which, at first glance, presents a problem.

To understand the merits of each of these options effectively, we need to assess the importance of each position to our overall points tally. This is best achieved by looking back on the performance of each position in the last campaign, analysing the top players and assessing how this translated to all available formations.

Firstly, we will look at the five highest scoring and best value (points per million) outfield players per position. Our objective here is to gain an idea of the spread of points available from defence, midfield and attack – the key factor when weighing up each formation.

Joleon Lescott1145.421.11
John Terry1637.920.63
Branislav Ivanovic1658.020.62

Ryan Bertrand is the real stand-out asset here. He was the best value defender in the game and also came in the top five for overall points.

The left-back’s value was significantly boosted by the fact that he was originally priced as Chelsea bench fodder before transforming into a key figure of the robust Southampton rearguard.

Each season, it’s crucial to target and acquire this type of value defensive asset as early as possible as they are key to liberating funds for heavy investment elsewhere. In 2013/14, it was Curtis Davies who emerged as the value option at the back and I would expect at least one strong candidate to come to the fore in defence again this campaign.

Bertrand’s team-mate, Jose Fonte, also proved an excellent pick, whilst John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic turned out to be good value, even though they came with top bracket pricing.

A swap from Ryan Bertrand to Joleon Lescott when Southampton’s shut-outs dried up proved to be the key strategy for success – the Baggies emergence as a clean sheet machine under Tony Pulis coincided nicely with the Saints’ defensive demise.

Sadio Mane1505.825.86
Riyad Mahrez1144.525.33
Ki Sung-Yueng1235.024.6
David Silva2138.724.48

Eden Hazard emerged as “essential” after earning the most points and representing the best value for midfielders at 27.98 points per million – he was also second overall for both these categories.

The Belgian has been a shoo-in for a couple of seasons now and I’m struggling to see that changing, with his penchant for Man of The Match (MoTM) awards making him an outstanding captain choice.

David Silva also managed to pop up in both tables after his stellar season; he similarly attracts a fair share of MoTM accolades, whilst frequently benefiting from passing bonus as part of City’s dominant midfield.

Santi Cazorla also deserves a mention. He’s an old favourite in the Sky Sports game, having been the top scoring player a couple of seasons ago with 262 points. The Gunners’ playmaker is a very deceptive scorer of points, relying on passing bonus and assists to keep his tally ticking around bursts of goals. He’s not the most explosive but he has proved to be a consistent and reliable points scorer.

Budget midfielders are also required early on in our XI’s while we wait for trends and form to emerge. Swansea’s Ki Sung-Yueng was one of our early picks: a player with an eye for goal and potential for passing bonus is always a good option and when that’s available for just 5.0 million, the value on offer is obvious.

Sadio Mane’s arrival was also key last season, as he soared up the scoring charts and ended the campaign ranked third for overall value across the positions. As we mentioned in our midfield analysis, he’s now enjoyed a significant price hike to 7.6 but remains a key target nonetheless.

Sky Sports Top Five Scoring Forwards 2014-15

Charlie Austin1837.125.77
Sergio Aguero2509.825.51
Danny Ings1617.023.00
Saido Berahino1566.922.61

Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Charlie Austin dominated matters after featuring in the top scoring players overall and the best value categories.

Aguero ended the season as the top ranked player, surpassing Hazard by just a single point, despite making nine fewer appearances.

Harry Kane’s price tag, in what turned out to be his breakthrough season, enabled him to reach the heights of 32.39 points per million. This was the best value return (for an outfield player) by some distance. Indeed, with Kane, Austin and, to some extent, Danny Ings and Saido Berahino presenting such value, it’s inevitable that many will be hunting for similar options this time around.

While we singled out some candidates in our recent analysis – namely Watford’s Troy Deeney and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – it’s clear that Kane and Austin will be tough acts to follow and we should in no way rely on the budget class of 2015/16 matching their achievements.

Having analysed each of the outfield positions, it’s clear that, as in previous seasons, the midfield stood out as being the pivotal area of our Sky Sports squads. They offer a higher points potential than forwards at a keener price. Midfielders made up five of the top ten scoring players overall and six of the top ten for value (ignoring goalkeepers).

Forwards are ranked next, whilst defenders lag behind by quite a distance, hindered by a scoring system that penalises every goal conceded. The top scoring defender, Branislav Ivanovic, earned 165 points after starting all 38 matches for a cost of 8.0 million. Compare this to the 5.8-priced Mane, who managed only 15 points less over 24 starts.

Final Formation Totals

  • 343 – 1879
  • 451 – 1860
  • 352 – 1910
  • 532 – 1869
  • 442 – 1876
  • 433 – 1851

The findings are pretty conclusive.

While the 3-4-3 is regarded as the most efficient formation in Fantasy Premier League, the results show that, even when you apply data from a season which saw the budget strikers deliver exceptional value, having a five-man midfield still proved optimal.

The 3-5-2 has long dominated as the formation of choice in the Sky Sports game and, even in a year where the likes of Kane and Austin excelled, this still emerged as the key setup, prevailing over the other formations by 29 points.

As mentioned, whether it’s possible for similar budget assets to emerge is open to question; it’s asking a lot for the likes of Deeney or Wilson to mirror Kane and Austin’s output. With that in mind, initially, the viability of a three-man strike force is in question.

We should stress that this can never be an exact science – the 3-5-2 will not be the most efficient formation at all times in the season. There will be periods where opting for three strikers could prove the optimal setup, particularly if strong budget midfield assets come to the fore.

Initially, though, with defenders being generally the weakest position and midfielders the strongest, it’s difficult to argue against setting up with the 3-5-2 come the August 8 kick-off.

Thoughts on my analysis of the top 6's striking options:
CIty: Aguero - world class, lone striker and proven in the prem but injury prone
Chelsea: Costa - guaranteed goals but a card magnet and also injure prone, plus Hazard is better coverage
United: Rooney - the only decent striking option for united atm and proven in prem but has been utilised in deep positions and will likely be off most set pieces behind Mata and Depay.
Liverpool: Benteke - fitness doubt for the start of the season and unproven in a different system/bigger team. Sturridge - is just always injured.
Spurs: Kane - guaranteed goals as the main focal point upfront but will he justify the £9.5 price tag/replicate last seasons early form?
Arsenal: Giroud - good when he plays but not a guaranteed starter with Walcott vying for a starting berth upfront.

IMO Aguero and Rooney are the standouts..

Agree with all of above - maybe it will be another season of thinking outside the box up top.
loads of cheap strikers last season did better than expected so maybe not having any of the above to start season wont hurt too much. Dont have any of them myself and have bolsterd mid/def instead.

Yes i understand the potential, however, last season Burnley's Trippier had 1 goal and 12 assists in the 2013/14 Championship season. He was nowhere near those numbers in the premiership.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Ivanovic, #Rutland, Rooney and Walcott have not moved from my RMTs drafts this summer. Many of the other roles have.

Who is nailed on for your Gameweek 1 side and how many places are up for grabs?

I think I am done at the moment, only big transfers and injuries will change my mind. Also going to monitor the lineups when it's time and might change few slots(for example if Ibe starts for Poll might as well punt on him and save 2 mil, could be nice differential)

I think every sensible person will have Rooney in 100%. Other than that, there's a lot of chopping and changing between 2 players constantly. Fabreags or Hazard, Ozil or Ramsey, Walcott or Sterling, Mane or Tadic, Pelle or Benteke, Ivanovic or Azpi, Mert or Kos, Rutland or Schmeichel, Francis or Mings, Costa or Aguero and the list probably goes on

Hazard, Sterling, Depay, Walcott, Rooney and Cedric all haven't moved in mine either.

Although, the rest of the spots are pretty much cemented excpet for part of the defence.

for me Azpilicueta has been nailed into my team from the start, sad to say he might be the only one.

Francis came in pretty early and stayed.

Rutland came in a bit later, and stayed.

Walcott, Ozil, Fabregas, Yaya, Cazorla, Sterling, Mane, and a few others have been in and out.

now though, I would say my 5th mid slot, 5th defender slot and 4th mid are the only ones that may change

Butland, Ruddy, Kane & Francis only ones in all drafts.

Doing the hokey cokey on the Arsenal mid (Ramsey>Walcott>Ozil)

Striker shuffle continues. Have now decided on Giroud to pair with Kane but the other position (up to £7m) has been a revolving door

      Cheap defenders also revolving

Not a single player has moved from my team since I entered it 3 weeks ago. That's because I haven't looked at it since then. I will decide who I want and what I will do in the 48 hours before kickoff. Anything else is self-training in indecision.

Hazard, Walcott, Rooney, Sakho and Huth.

The rest have been dancing around on permanent rotation for the last 3 weeks.

Mental note to self: it is not possible to have every good player in your team no matter how hard you try!

Butland, ruddy, ivanovic, Rooney n Walcott, huth, Milner

Unsure on other high priced defender, hard to justify unless good attacking returns.
Cud play great, win 6-1 n only get 2 points cause conceded, attackers less likely to lose points unless missed penalties

Assuming no injury concerns or selection doubts.

      Migs Schmeichel

Koscielny, PVA, Huth, Williams, Jenkinson, Ward, Francis

Sterling, Fabregas, Ritchie, Ozil, Depay, Wanyama

      Rooney, Benteke, Wilson, Sakho,

So 6 spots up for grabs as things stand, though 8-12 if good evidence emerges for a justified change.

i would like to think ritchie is a going to be a cheap diamond of a midfielder, personally stuck between depay and walcott but with depay possibly needing a few games to get used to the pl and walcott potentially playing as a striker in some games, i've gone for walcott for now. i also like sakho as a striker, think he could do well this season

The only players who haven't moved from my side since the start have been Apzi, Wallcott, Sakho and Rooney. All the others have changed at some point. I'm pretty locked in to a team now but my mainstays are Apzi, Rooney, Mane, Mert/Kosc, Wallcott, Sakho, Pelle (unless Costa does something)

Schmeichel, Schwarzer, Ivanovic, Cedric, Hazard, Walcott 100%

Lots of 50/50s - Francis/Mings, O'Shea/Coates/Matthews, to Benteke or not to Benteke etc.

Pretty sure Deeney will stay in aswell. Was the third name on my teamsheet at that price, and has stayed in through all drafts along with Hazard and LEI duo.

Ladies and gents, some RMT thoughts would be much appreciated:

      Butland / Ruddy

      Azpilicueta / Koscielny / Huth / Williams / PVA

      Sterling / Fabregas / Ozil / Henderson / Ritchie

      Rooney / Sakho / Lukaku

Thinking - cash in on Lukaku's big GW1 before transferring to Pelle for GW2

      Dilemmas:

      (1) Is Ivanovic worth the additional 1M on Azpilicueta?

      (2) Is there a better 4.5M/5M option than Williams out there?

      (3) Is it mad to go Fabregas (and better overall balance) ahead of Hazard?

      (4) Is there a better 5th midfield/3rd forward rotation pair than Ritchie and Sakho (Deeney, for example)?

Grateful for any advice or observations from the experts.

Cedric to Fonte. Who is Cook?
You would be a bit more secure, if not as exciting, with Cazorla or Ramsey. Ki Sung-Yeung instead of Ritchie, maybe?

      Gk: good rotation pair
Def: who is Cook? Otherwise looks good
Mid: nice though I would be nervous about Ritchie, could be a steal or bust
Fwd: I just chickened out on Costa as he hasn't scored any in pre-season, watch him in Charity shield if no good dump for Roon

Here's a tip. If people are quibbling over just one or two players in your rmts they're probably very strong. Nobody knows if mata or depay will start better. Or ozil or theo. Nobody knows if sterling will tear it up or crash and burn. It's just opinion and yours is as valid as theirs.

Listen only to wholesale advice and stuff about form and injuries from people who support the club's in question. If you changed a player everytime somebody said "Wilson not Deeney" you could go through ten times and change your entire first eleven.

    Relax. It all starts soon.

    Just don't pick Falcao.

I'll tell you why Falcao will be good this season.
      1) 2nd year in PL
2)Lone striker, not like in Manutd
      3) More gametime(Costa injury prone+Suspension)
      4) More chances created in midfield
5)Mourinho is tactically better than LVG

I reckon 10-15 goals for Falcao and I'm a United fan

Welbz is a squad player, so he will do his job good. The problem is since he joined arsenal, he had 4-6 injuries which is a bad thing for his development.

Lack of striker options might see me switching for 3-5-2.

Costa - no baps, yc, falcao lurking
Aguero - not ready and not from the start
Benteke - no pre season, not yet
    Kane - ???
Jrod - will be eased back

For now I'm settle for Pelle-Roo-Sakho like everyone else.

In that case, we should go for 4-5-1, everyone has demerits 😛
Rooney is not on penalties, Southampton doesn't score many goals on road and Sakho has Arsenal in 1st week.

Currently got Rooney - Kane - Sakho

One reason is because I prefer Mane and don't really want double S'oton attack (Pelle). The reason I like Kane is he allows me easy access to any of the 7-9 mil forwards should they come out of the blocks with a bang. Benteke for example (though I don't think he will). Not to mention he is a quality striker. I don't think he'll have as good a season as last year, but I don't think that should mean he won't start reasonably.

Sure. But there's a point at which saving money becomes irrelevant b/c I think Mane will do better than Pelle and Kane will do better than Chadli, to a significant enough extent that the savings would not be worth it. Don't you?

Every single time Santi Cazorla played against West Ham, he has eithier scored or assisted.

Every single time Theo Walcott played against West Ham and has scored (4 out of 5 last meetings), he would always either score another or provide an additional assist.

Both have come off the bench and still have done their respective trends
