Deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom penned a season-long loan deal with Norwich City last week. Talking to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old insisted that’s he’s in prime shape for a Premier League start:

“I spoke to the manager, and he’s told me what he wants from myself and the team collectively. It’s going to be good and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve maintained a high fitness level because I’ve been on tour with Liverpool, so I’m coming here fit and ready to go. I’m hoping to help the team by contributing on and off the pitch.”

The History

Born in Leeds, Wisdom started out at Bradford City’s youth academy, before making the switch to Liverpool at the age of 14. Having worked his way up the ranks, Wisdom established himself as a regular starter for the Reds’ reserve team at centre-back.

The installation of Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat led to Wisdom’s promotion to the first team. After earning his senior debut during Liverpool’s 5-2 demolition of Norwich in September 2012, he went on to notch a further 11 starts at right-back that term, serving up one assist in the process.

A lack of starting opportunities on Merseyside prompted Wisdom to spend the 2013/14 season on loan to Championship outfit Derby County. Upon his switch to the Rams in October, he started and finished every league encounter, bagging three assists across 33 outings.

Wisdom teamed up with West Bromwich Albion for the 2014/15 Premier League season, where he enjoyed the security of starts under Alan Irvine, chalking up one assist in 18 appearances. Irvine’s sacking and the subsequent hiring of Tony Pulis engendered a reduction in his playing time, with Wisdom mustering just three more starts that term.

On the international stage, Wisdom has turned out a total of 37 times at youth level, from England U16 to 21, and found the net on three occasions.

The Prospects

Wisdom spent the last year of his youth spell at Liverpool operating at centre-back but has since exclusively been fielded in the right-back berth. Alex Neil’s comments regarding Wisdom’s arrival at Carrow Road suggest he favours him in the latter role:

“I’m delighted as Andre fits our profile in terms of getting hungry players in who want to make their way in the game. He’s also had Premier League experience with a few different clubs, so we’re happy to get it over the line. It will add to the competition for places as he’s a flexible player. In the past he’s played centre-back and right-back. Having added competition to the left-hand side with Robbie Brady, it was important to add something to the right side as well.”

Indeed, Wisdom’s first run-out for the Norfolk club was at right-back: he clocked 30 minutes during a pre-season debut against Brentford at the weekend, emerging from the bench to tee up Cameron Jerome for an emphatic winner.

Wisdom looks set to challenge Steven Whittaker for starts at right-back, with Russell Martin and Sebastien Bassong forming Neil’s first-choice centre-back pairing. With no certainty that Norwich’s latest arrival will be handed a run at the start of the season, few Fantasy managers will be tempted to snap up the 4.5-priced defender from the off.

Across his 2080 minutes of pitch time last season, Wisdom fashioned just three (off-target) attempts at goal, while Whittaker and Martin both served up two goals apiece, albeit in the Championship. Furthermore, Wisdom executed a paltry nine key passes for his team-mates, bagging one assist along the way. Whittaker (five), Martin (five) and Olsson (six) all surpassed that assist haul, with the former ranking fourth for key passes (38) among Norwich’s full roster.

Indeed, with just two assists in 38 appearances in the Premier League to his name, Wisdom offers little in the way of attacking potential. Even if he nails down a starting berth, then, his lack of impact in the final third suggests he may have to rely on clean sheets for points but with the changes to the BPS scoring system favouring the similarly-priced John Ruddy between the sticks, Wisdom’s appeal looks limited. Indeed, given that there are options at the likes of Sunderland and Leicester at the same cost, Norwich’s defenders may struggle to justify any level of investment.

Nonetheless, those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Canaries backline in light of their decent early schedule (CRY, sun, STO, sou, BOU, liv) might be inclined to source a budget rotation partner to exploit their kind home fixtures. On that note, Stoke City alternate well with the Canaries, furnishing us with just five match-ups against last term’s top-six sides leading into the New Year. With the schedule smiling kindly, it’s little wonder that many on the site are eyeing up a Ruddy/Jack Butland cut-price pairing between the posts at a cost of just 9.0, with the prospect of save points, at the least, looking more enticing.

      Payet is a punt.

consider this.. west hame wont score a LOT. but if they do most probably will be their strikers (sakho)

also payet is a midfielder. dont reckon west ham will keep too many clean sheets. wont get the extra point. ( even with the early fixture list)

tbf i did have payet and deeney in my team. but too much of a risk early on. better players to throw in.

Baker won't play. Saylor is the pick of the 4.0s as things stand (but still not nailed either).

If you're gonna change Vardy to Sakho, you might as well just start with Sakho and keep the 1ft

It's a good side but you will get a headache every Saturday morning trying to pick who to bench. I prefer a 4.5m mid and rotating defenders. It makes it much easier but if you want the options, go for it

Yes, double on any defence this early is quite risky.
But I agree on Schmeichel + Schwarzer as the best 8.5 combo, Leicester have really nice starting fixtures and kept a lot CS towards the end of last season.

Tbh I absolutely hate the defence. Mangala is in an average defence (given the price) and often missed games last season.
Cedric has to be the single most overpicked played ever. Southampton only have 1 of last seasons defenders for the first few weeks, no attacking threat, BPS favors CB's and he is always getting booked apparently.
Kaboul is a big risk with gametime. Coates and O'Shea are trusted by Advocaat.
Pudil is part of a poor defence in a side that like to attack and are bound to concede. I can see them being the new Blackpool.
Huth is the only decent pick in there. I actually like some of the rest of the team including GK's but having that defence as well at Walcott, Bojan and Chadli just screams GW2 wildcard.

RMT, any advice would be appreciated

    Butland - Ruddy
    Azpilicueta - Koscileny - Cedric - Coates - Huth
    Hazard - Sterling - Cazorla - Henderson - Fletcher
    Rooney - Benteke - Wilson

Kun plan is: Sterling -> Lens/Cabaye/Ritchie or whoever emerges, Rooney -> Aguero (unless Rooney is on fire)

I just had to comment on this simply because of your name and grav. Whenever Vikram was fielding on the boundary in an England v India ODI, the stick he used to get was unbelievable! Even had a few samosas thrown for him to eat!

Anyway…that team looks good and very similar to mine other than I'm currently on Ozil > Cazorla, Baker > Coates and Wanyama > Fletcher.

Similar plan to me too, however if Rooney is banging them in, it's going to be a struggle which may involve an early WC.

    Scheichel (Butland)
    Azp Mert Cedric (O'Shea Smith)
    Ozil Hazard Mané Hendo (Bentaleb)
    Sakho Rooney Pelle.

Now then, I've 1.5 in the bank. I'm not totally sold on Hendo, and would like to bring in Ritchie, which would leave 2.5 in the bank. Problem is, I'm not sure what to do with that!

    Depay/Hazard/Silva/Bradley Johnson/Wanyama
    Rooney/Kane/Sakho

Been toying with it for hours and that seems to be as good as I can get, but I had a shocker last year and would love some feedback. Thanks!

I got a feeling he will, I see hos ownership is creeping back up as well so most people seem to think he will and then u have him in ready for the Bournemouth game and a possible captain

    Koscieleny or Mertesacker?
And also the best £4.0 million defender who will play?

Kos but he is 0.5 more. Best 4.0 def is Targett but he will lose his place to Berty when hes back

Getting happier with the team, any thoughts/RMT? 2.5 ITB to bring Kun in.

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Azpi Cedrc Williams (Bassong Francis)
    Siggy Ozil Walcott Hazard (Anya)
    Deeney Sakho Rooney

I'm getting increasingly tempted (prior to yesterdays goal) to bring the Ox in for Wally/Ozil and use the cash to upgrade a defender to Kos and cedric to fonte, any thoughts on that move?

    Thanks

      Front 8 looks very nice!

Defence a little weak in all honesty.

      schwarzer to butland
      ward to coates
alderweireld out (dont rely on spurs defence)

      depay and sterling early risks.

save depay for later since you have rooney aswell. - swap to mane (good early fixtures)

    Cech / Mccarthy
    Apzi / Cedric / Kaboul / Huth / Targett
    Hazard / Walcott / Depay / Sterling / Sinclair
    Rooney / Benteke / Grabban

    Opinions much appreciated!

coates looks more nailed than kaboul. it will be between kaboul and oshea. but coates nailed on.

depay and rooney? depay to a liverpool/soton midfielder early on

    B) Clyne

Bellerin because I really like him, but probably not the most sensible choice

Out of those two, Clyne (ARS defence is miles better but Bellerin is not nailed). But Mert is the outstanding pick for 5.5 IMO

Clyne the better pick imo. Nailed on and should pitch in with an assist or two esp seeing as Benteke is great in the air. Bellerin somewhat a card magnet & will probably share pitch time with Debuchy

        Or Bentaleb.
If going with Wanyama, just keep in mind he'll block you selecting three other So'ton players like e.g. Pelle+Mane+Fonte

Wanyama or Bentaleb are both great choices
