Deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom penned a season-long loan deal with Norwich City last week. Talking to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old insisted that’s he’s in prime shape for a Premier League start:

“I spoke to the manager, and he’s told me what he wants from myself and the team collectively. It’s going to be good and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve maintained a high fitness level because I’ve been on tour with Liverpool, so I’m coming here fit and ready to go. I’m hoping to help the team by contributing on and off the pitch.”

The History

Born in Leeds, Wisdom started out at Bradford City’s youth academy, before making the switch to Liverpool at the age of 14. Having worked his way up the ranks, Wisdom established himself as a regular starter for the Reds’ reserve team at centre-back.

The installation of Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat led to Wisdom’s promotion to the first team. After earning his senior debut during Liverpool’s 5-2 demolition of Norwich in September 2012, he went on to notch a further 11 starts at right-back that term, serving up one assist in the process.

A lack of starting opportunities on Merseyside prompted Wisdom to spend the 2013/14 season on loan to Championship outfit Derby County. Upon his switch to the Rams in October, he started and finished every league encounter, bagging three assists across 33 outings.

Wisdom teamed up with West Bromwich Albion for the 2014/15 Premier League season, where he enjoyed the security of starts under Alan Irvine, chalking up one assist in 18 appearances. Irvine’s sacking and the subsequent hiring of Tony Pulis engendered a reduction in his playing time, with Wisdom mustering just three more starts that term.

On the international stage, Wisdom has turned out a total of 37 times at youth level, from England U16 to 21, and found the net on three occasions.

The Prospects

Wisdom spent the last year of his youth spell at Liverpool operating at centre-back but has since exclusively been fielded in the right-back berth. Alex Neil’s comments regarding Wisdom’s arrival at Carrow Road suggest he favours him in the latter role:

“I’m delighted as Andre fits our profile in terms of getting hungry players in who want to make their way in the game. He’s also had Premier League experience with a few different clubs, so we’re happy to get it over the line. It will add to the competition for places as he’s a flexible player. In the past he’s played centre-back and right-back. Having added competition to the left-hand side with Robbie Brady, it was important to add something to the right side as well.”

Indeed, Wisdom’s first run-out for the Norfolk club was at right-back: he clocked 30 minutes during a pre-season debut against Brentford at the weekend, emerging from the bench to tee up Cameron Jerome for an emphatic winner.

Wisdom looks set to challenge Steven Whittaker for starts at right-back, with Russell Martin and Sebastien Bassong forming Neil’s first-choice centre-back pairing. With no certainty that Norwich’s latest arrival will be handed a run at the start of the season, few Fantasy managers will be tempted to snap up the 4.5-priced defender from the off.

Across his 2080 minutes of pitch time last season, Wisdom fashioned just three (off-target) attempts at goal, while Whittaker and Martin both served up two goals apiece, albeit in the Championship. Furthermore, Wisdom executed a paltry nine key passes for his team-mates, bagging one assist along the way. Whittaker (five), Martin (five) and Olsson (six) all surpassed that assist haul, with the former ranking fourth for key passes (38) among Norwich’s full roster.

Indeed, with just two assists in 38 appearances in the Premier League to his name, Wisdom offers little in the way of attacking potential. Even if he nails down a starting berth, then, his lack of impact in the final third suggests he may have to rely on clean sheets for points but with the changes to the BPS scoring system favouring the similarly-priced John Ruddy between the sticks, Wisdom’s appeal looks limited. Indeed, given that there are options at the likes of Sunderland and Leicester at the same cost, Norwich’s defenders may struggle to justify any level of investment.

Nonetheless, those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Canaries backline in light of their decent early schedule (CRY, sun, STO, sou, BOU, liv) might be inclined to source a budget rotation partner to exploit their kind home fixtures. On that note, Stoke City alternate well with the Canaries, furnishing us with just five match-ups against last term’s top-six sides leading into the New Year. With the schedule smiling kindly, it’s little wonder that many on the site are eyeing up a Ruddy/Jack Butland cut-price pairing between the posts at a cost of just 9.0, with the prospect of save points, at the least, looking more enticing.

Thoughts on this please, gw1 defence is a worry because if Gomez don't play I will have 3 defenders and seen that Francis may not be nailed now, but after that it seems ok

      ______Schmeichel________
      __Azpi Francis Gomez_____
      Hazard(c) Sterling Ozil Mane
      __Rooney Benteke Sakho___

        Sorry bottom of previous page

Getting happier with the team, any thoughts/RMT? 2.5 ITB to bring Kun in.

        Ruddy (Butland)
        Azpi Cedrc Williams (Bassong Francis)
        Siggy Ozil Walcott Hazard (Anya)
        Deeney Sakho Rooney

I'm getting increasingly tempted (prior to yesterdays goal) to bring the Ox in for Wally/Ozil and use the cash to upgrade a defender to Kos, any thoughts on that move?

        Thanks

I dont like Deeney's fixtures at all personally. Home to WBA and SOU in GW 2 and 3 are not easy fixtures. They are some of the best travelling teams.

I think so. He should play the first few weeks and bar any disaster, he could keep his place. That being said, if Lovren plays.......

I need to find a 5.5m in that case. Sanchez would be a nice differential, great goal scorer and another captain options

When do you plan to WC? I know i will have all three of those with my WC in gw4. Mahrez is a great option in the mid, Maybe get Jenkinson as 5th mid since him and Francis rotate amazingly first 8 GW. Think there is no better rotation than that.

In all honesty, i would try an early wc to get them instead of early sacrifices. Just me tho.

Think im pretty set on starting with this team. Any thoughts would be appreciated. This is just until GW4 WC. Also the thinkin i have is this: Get Panti and downgrade Kosc to Mert. Ozil out for another 8.5 mid. Maybe Ramsey. Im dropping Lukaku to Sakho in gw2. Whatever he does. Also i would like to get an option instead of O'Shea in the back at 4.5

        Ruddy / Rudd

        Ivan / Kosc / Huth / O'shea / Targett (starting him gw2)

        Haz / Mane / Ozil / Walcott / Barry

        Rooney / Lukaku / Defoe

To fund him I'd probably have to downgrade Theo to someone like Ritchie or Mahrez and that will fund Rooney to Aguero (or wc)

The other option is don't get Benteke but with 31% ownership and BOU un GW2 it seems a risky route to go down

Sterling is up against arguably the best two defences in the league up first. Why so many people picking him?

And even then, why pick him over silva (there's always room for a million more if it's worth it)

Has anyone had so underwhelming a season as sterling and gone UP in price, Fantasy towers believing the hype

        I'd rather have lens...

I think he's a great pick. Prefer to ignore last season, and look at the season before with Suarez. Playing for City over Liverpool merits the increase in price i'd say.

Why pick him over Silva? Because i think he'll score more goal than him, and is 1m cheaper.

Rodgers looks the bookies favourite, with Flores, Bilic, and Sherwood not far behind.

The Arsenal midfield choice is going to go to the wire for me this week.. Currently on Ramsey and Caz but Walcott and Ozil are still contenders

ozil over caz ramsey at 8.5 wenger said he will swap between walcott and giroud based on fixtures.

          consider that. read the news.

Will you have 8 attackers of premium quality then or will your team be well balanced...not to mention top teams that have nothing to fight for vs rellagation "I will bite today" teams?

Draft #alot, but very happy with it.

        Pantilimon (Schwarzer)
        Ivan - Kos + (Francis/Gomez/O'Shea)
Haz - Sterling - Ramsey - Mane (Fletcher)
        Kane - Pelle - Wilson.

Very template, apart from the front 3 I think. I don't trust MU yet.
Season-long defense, I don't want to have to change it.
        I expect Kane+Sterling (18.5) to outscore any Aguero+5.5M. Let's see !

        What do you think ?

Kane could be awesome but I can't bring myself to pay that much for him. Not sure about Ramsey either.

          Defense is fine.

        Please RMT.

        Courtois, Hennessey.
        Francis, Cedric, Chester, Cresswell, Koscienly.
        Ki, Lens, Milner, Ozil, Hazard.
        Deeney, Kane, Rooney.

          I was thinking Lens

          looks good !

could consider Cech and Azpi instead of Kos and Courtois?

Thanks! Did toy with that idea but think cech and courtois are evenly matched and Kos has a greater goal threat.

          cresswell to clyne/skrtel.

or azpilicueta with an extra 0.5

          lens is a risk - ritchie/mahrez/adam

deeney is another risk tough fixtures.

sakho has good early fixtures ( 6 out of his first 10 fixtures have him as a massive goal threat)

Cresswell to Azpi is a good shout, not touching the liverpool defence.

Gona stick with Lens but will upgrade Deeney to Sakho.

            Thanks for the constructive feedback.

Pants has more save points and is the only safe way into Sun defence. Liverpool defence is so unpredictable anyway, they go from 4 consecutive clean sheets to crumbling out of nowhere.
