Deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom penned a season-long loan deal with Norwich City last week. Talking to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old insisted that’s he’s in prime shape for a Premier League start:

“I spoke to the manager, and he’s told me what he wants from myself and the team collectively. It’s going to be good and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve maintained a high fitness level because I’ve been on tour with Liverpool, so I’m coming here fit and ready to go. I’m hoping to help the team by contributing on and off the pitch.”

The History

Born in Leeds, Wisdom started out at Bradford City’s youth academy, before making the switch to Liverpool at the age of 14. Having worked his way up the ranks, Wisdom established himself as a regular starter for the Reds’ reserve team at centre-back.

The installation of Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat led to Wisdom’s promotion to the first team. After earning his senior debut during Liverpool’s 5-2 demolition of Norwich in September 2012, he went on to notch a further 11 starts at right-back that term, serving up one assist in the process.

A lack of starting opportunities on Merseyside prompted Wisdom to spend the 2013/14 season on loan to Championship outfit Derby County. Upon his switch to the Rams in October, he started and finished every league encounter, bagging three assists across 33 outings.

Wisdom teamed up with West Bromwich Albion for the 2014/15 Premier League season, where he enjoyed the security of starts under Alan Irvine, chalking up one assist in 18 appearances. Irvine’s sacking and the subsequent hiring of Tony Pulis engendered a reduction in his playing time, with Wisdom mustering just three more starts that term.

On the international stage, Wisdom has turned out a total of 37 times at youth level, from England U16 to 21, and found the net on three occasions.

The Prospects

Wisdom spent the last year of his youth spell at Liverpool operating at centre-back but has since exclusively been fielded in the right-back berth. Alex Neil’s comments regarding Wisdom’s arrival at Carrow Road suggest he favours him in the latter role:

“I’m delighted as Andre fits our profile in terms of getting hungry players in who want to make their way in the game. He’s also had Premier League experience with a few different clubs, so we’re happy to get it over the line. It will add to the competition for places as he’s a flexible player. In the past he’s played centre-back and right-back. Having added competition to the left-hand side with Robbie Brady, it was important to add something to the right side as well.”

Indeed, Wisdom’s first run-out for the Norfolk club was at right-back: he clocked 30 minutes during a pre-season debut against Brentford at the weekend, emerging from the bench to tee up Cameron Jerome for an emphatic winner.

Wisdom looks set to challenge Steven Whittaker for starts at right-back, with Russell Martin and Sebastien Bassong forming Neil’s first-choice centre-back pairing. With no certainty that Norwich’s latest arrival will be handed a run at the start of the season, few Fantasy managers will be tempted to snap up the 4.5-priced defender from the off.

Across his 2080 minutes of pitch time last season, Wisdom fashioned just three (off-target) attempts at goal, while Whittaker and Martin both served up two goals apiece, albeit in the Championship. Furthermore, Wisdom executed a paltry nine key passes for his team-mates, bagging one assist along the way. Whittaker (five), Martin (five) and Olsson (six) all surpassed that assist haul, with the former ranking fourth for key passes (38) among Norwich’s full roster.

Indeed, with just two assists in 38 appearances in the Premier League to his name, Wisdom offers little in the way of attacking potential. Even if he nails down a starting berth, then, his lack of impact in the final third suggests he may have to rely on clean sheets for points but with the changes to the BPS scoring system favouring the similarly-priced John Ruddy between the sticks, Wisdom’s appeal looks limited. Indeed, given that there are options at the likes of Sunderland and Leicester at the same cost, Norwich’s defenders may struggle to justify any level of investment.

Nonetheless, those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Canaries backline in light of their decent early schedule (CRY, sun, STO, sou, BOU, liv) might be inclined to source a budget rotation partner to exploit their kind home fixtures. On that note, Stoke City alternate well with the Canaries, furnishing us with just five match-ups against last term’s top-six sides leading into the New Year. With the schedule smiling kindly, it’s little wonder that many on the site are eyeing up a Ruddy/Jack Butland cut-price pairing between the posts at a cost of just 9.0, with the prospect of save points, at the least, looking more enticing.

I will be using a new tactic. I am going to field a team specifically for GW1 and use the 'bench boost' chip therefore all my 15 players will be playable. The following week I am obviously going to Wildcard. I'll know lineups, early form...etc. therefore I think this is a good and punty idea.

    The team:
Schmeichal | Howard ------- I expect clean sheets from both 🙂
Azpi | Kosc | Coleman | Kolarov | Huth ------- Yes, expensive but deadly
Hazard | Oscar (C) | Ozil | Ramsey | Young ------- Very punty, Young nailed and only 6m
Vardy | Wilson | Lukaku ------- I think all these strikers will perform GW1. Cheap but great.

I will downgrade the defence (especially Coleman and Kosc) if necessary to upgrade in another area. I'm fairly happy with this team. Oscar scored twice last time out against the Swans and I feel he is nailed to start. Fabregas to drop back with Matic after Ramires disappointing and attacking performance.
Thoughts and changes I should do? Thanks

Just having a bit of fun 🙂

And I will be using the Triple Captain chip in a DGW definitely. I don't feel this chip is necessary then because I'll be fielding those players in the starting 11 (ones who have a DGW)

You could potentially have 15 players twice (30) with good planning/WC

Twice as good as 15 players in fact.

          Save it!

            Hmmm

That is true however a DGW normally occurs for a maximum of 4 teams in a single game week. As we can only get 3 players from each team; that'll be 12 players. I can field 11 which will be profitable. And double game weeks occur later in the season so I'll have my other wildcard then

The difference is you can play your 11 dgw players and still have big single week players like hazard or aguero. Remember the dilemmas of not knowing who to start, dgw cheapie vs sgw big hitter?

Saying that, you might be right that it is more useful to use triple captain in a dgw

I think you will regret using a chip too early. Especially when bench boost will be so powerful on a double game week where you could get between 10 and 15 DWG players.

Also, not sure I'd want to wildcard after GW 1. Very punty and could get you an early lead however, I doubt this lead would last.

    SKY GAME QUESTION (NEWBIE):

Given the captaincy changes allowed, is Rooney "essential" or, more generally, is having three strikers a must?

I currently don't have Rooney and have a 352 (Aguero Kane up front). To get Rooney I would either need to drop Kane (who seemed to be gold dust last year) or drop Silva and switch to 343. I have some spare cash...

The last captain you have on Sun/Mon becomes your Saturday captain next week. Kind of makes Rooney useless as you would waste your captain change to captain.

May I know the difference between captaining a player playing on Saturday and playing on sunday?

Both get captains points. Changing captain to Sunday will get you more points. Transferring a Monday player in gets you more but uses a transfer.

Being really thick I imagine but I don't get this (first year on the game), you can only set one captain per weekend right? Or are you saying you can change it daily so you can set one captain on Saturday and one on Sunday and another Monday?

    Any thoughts on this squad?

    Ruddy (Henessey)
Azpi / Cedric / OShea (Huth / Francis)
Haz / Sterling / Ozil / Hendo (Ritchie)
    Rooney / Deeney / Sakho

have 2.5m itb, don't know where to spend maybe keeping it to fund Aguero

if I upgrade Deeney to Benteke then I'd have to downgrade Ritchie as I don't want points on my bench...also Pool's fixtures aint that gr8 for first few weeks, btw am more worried of goalkeeper combo...can you suggest on those lines?

I wouldn't keep it from the start. Most people seem to be planning on bringing in Aguero for GW 4 so his price isn't likely to rise too much before then.

Keeping 2.5 in the bank for 3 weeks seems a bit of a waste to me. Spend it now then save one FT to do a double transfer for Aguero.

Don't like Oscar, but prefer Mané. Would get someone else at 8.5.

I have A at the moment but to be honest the only player I really like out of those 4 right now is Mane

I like Oscar for 2/3 fixtures. Would bench him in GW2. Looked threatening vs Arsenal.

Oscar is one of those players who looks like he should be a good pick, but never is

Is also prone to early subs and random droppings

          Did he really?

I don't know - could be a huge call if it works out but has he had a proper pre season? He was injured and missed the copa america and all. When in form he's a fantastic fpl player.

    Thoughts on this?

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer
    Azpilicueta - Koscielny - Cedric - M. Richards - Oxford
    Ramsey - Fabregas - Ozil - Mané - Payet
    Benteke - Rooney - Wilson

Ramsey & Payet OR Walcott & Chadli.
    Payet/Chadli for GW 2 and 3 ONLY.
    AOA chip in GW2.

go for Rutland GK rotation as its better

      Walcott and Chadli definitely

Thanks, prefer to have the 0.5 extra from GK's, always get GK rotation wrong anyway. My only worry with Walcott is whether or not he will play GW2.

    Cheers

Azpi, Clyne, Richards (Alderweireld, Steven Taylor)
    Depay, Sterling, Hazard, Mahrez, Carzola

I'm with you I think. I'm going to write an article on it later and see what the consensus is. The big 5 happened a few seasons again and could happen again.

I'm playing 3-5-2, I think it will score more points, there are a lot of good midfield options.

It is a risk though, will require more transfers if you decide to change.

alderweireld I dont think is a good pick yet.

      mid is tasty.

waste of a ST space having a non player

What are the other budget striker choices? I'm not against 3-5-2, but I'm a fan of having something on the bench just in case.
