As explained last week, we’re rolling out a Scout Picks squad in the middle of each week in order to give you a heads-up over our thinking for the Gameweek ahead.

This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the days progress.
For Gameweek 2, though, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

West Ham’s resilient showing at Arsenal brings Adrian into consideration – the Spaniard racked up 11 points in the 2-0 win and welcomes Leicester to Upton Park this weekend. Last season’s top scoring keeper, Lukasz Fabianski, is also in our thoughts as Swansea play host to Newcastle.

Defenders

Again, the Hammers are prominent in defence. Aaron Cresswell’s security of starts and attacking potential – two goals and four assists in 2014/15 – make him the prime pick in Slaven Bilic’s rearguard, with some uncertainty still surrounding the rest of the back-four now that Carl Jenkinson is back in the picture.

Martin Skrtel’s propensity for picking up bonus points bring the Slovakian into our squad for Liverpool’s home clash with Bournemouth. At 5.5, though, Skrtel is far pricier than Joe Gomez (4.5), who should keep his starting berth after supplying the assist for Philippe Coutinho’s winner last Sunday.

Southampton’s Cedric Soares is also on our radar for the visit of Everton. The raiding right-back grabbed an assist during last week’s draw at Newcastle, though his half-time withdrawal – as a result of a yellow card – is somewhat disconcerting. Tottenham’s home encounter with Stoke brings Kyle Walker into consideration. Like Soares, he is also priced at 5.0 and seems to have edged ahead of Kieran Trippier for the right-back berth.

Watford’s Miguel Layun was fielded on the left of the attacking midfield three and grabbed a goal in the 2-2 draw at Everton. There’s still concerns over his pitch time but, at 4.5, he’s worth considering at home to West Brom.

United’s Matteo Darmian is our final selection as United make their way to Villa. The right-back’s forages down the flank quickly caught the eye on Saturday, whilst he also chipped in with a clean sheet and a couple of bonus points to suggest he has the form to justify that 5.5 price tag.

Midfielders

Having opened his account with an assist in West Ham’s win at Arsenal, Dimitri Payet is a major contender for the visit of Leicester. Sunderland new boy Jeremain Lens also picked up an assist last time out and will fancy his chances at home to a Norwich defence that shipped three goals at home to Palace on Saturday afternoon.

Sadio Mane’s pace and eye for goal will surely ask questions of Everton backline that shipped two goals at home to Watford in Gameweek 1. Philippe Coutinho is also in the mix after grabbing a goal last weekend, as is Swansea’s new signing Andre Ayew. The Ghanaian fired three shots inside the box at Chelsea last weekend and, at a price of 7.0, is kinder in the budget than team-mate Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Alexis Sanchez’s impressive display off the bench in Arsenal’s home loss to the Hammers will surely have earned him a start away to Palace’s porous defence. On the other side of north London, Christian Eriksen’s underlying stats (three shots, four key passes against United) persuade us to call him up as Spurs welcome Stoke to the Lane.

Forwards

There’s a number of strikers with home comforts jostling for a place in the picks. Bafetimbi Gomis and Graziano Pelle are arguably the form options – both are already off the mark ahead of visits from Newcastle and Everton.

Sitting second in this week’s Captain Poll, Christian Benteke is handed the perfect opportunity to get amongst the goals for Liverpool as Bournemouth roll up to Anfield on Monday night. At 6.5, Diafra Sakho should take advantage of a Leicester backline that conceded two to Sunderland last time out.

Harry Kane is also in the mix as Spurs prepare for the visit of Stoke, whilst Wayne Rooney – top of the Captain Poll for the second week running – is still in consideration as he makes his way to Aston Villa. Rooney will need to improve upon last season’s showings – where he scored one away goal – to barge his way into our final picks, though.

Community Champion

Representing the community in the Scout Picks this week is Daniel Levy – Not the Chairman of Spurs. This is his third season as a Fantasy Premier League manager. After a terrible first season, where he finished with a rank of 1,802,706 he completed the 2014/15 campaign with a far more respectable rank of 39,403. Like many of the FFScout community, Gameweek 1 was one to forget, as he scored just 33 points.

Gameweek 1 Community Champion Fuzzy Warbles’ faith in Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez proved the difference as he got the Community off to a winning start. While the Scout Picks mustered just 26 points, Fuzzy accrued 38 and takes an early lead in the race for the £100 Amazon voucher for the Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2015/16.

My opinion on Payet is, he started off well and got an assist, which he's well known for doing. But he's not known for scoring a load of goals, so why transfer out a goalscoring midfielder who will end up outscoring Payet, just after one GW? Just stick with your original options.

Here's some advice to people contemplating knee-jerk moves:

Form is not established in a week, a trend-line needs 3 points to be a trend-line, otherwise it's just a line-segment and no reasonable conclusions can be drawn about the future.

At this point in time, a flair transfer is cool if it's just your FT and you have nothing pressing, but don't take hits to chase GW1 points UNLESS (and it's a flimsy qualifier) they're proven points-getters (i.e. Yaya, Chadli, etc).

Team looks fine, but how can it be based on form? One GW doesn't indicate form. You need 2 GWs just for something to be a coincidence. As Sinik said above, you need 3 GWs at least to asses form.

Hmm...thinking of benching Fabregas this week, is that crazy?

    Yaya, Fab, Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane
    Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

Punted on Wijnaldum in GW1 and benched Sakho, but now got a big decision on my front 7 this week.

However expecting some mid level carnage come this Saturday morning...

Vgood playing 11 but the prob is you have at least 4 players who may not get the pitch time week in week out so if you get any injuries or bans you could end up in trouble.

    Very roughly speaking...

Payet over his career 1 goal every five games (about 60 in 300)
Ayew over his career 1 goal every four games (about 50 in 200)

    For info.

Arguably Ayew played for the weaker teams which perhaps meant less chances to convert? But I would be guessing there

Ayew essential. Guess it depends on the teams they played in too.

Over a season that's a difference of maybe a couple of goals most at that ratio and Payet has way more assists. Would that not sway you to Payet? I prefer Gomis to Sakho I think which also sways me that way

      1. Skipdipper
        • 14 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

        Not sure but....

"Last season Payet led Ligue 1 comfortably for assists with 17, five more than his nearest challenger, Paris Saint-Germain’s Javier Pastore. Payet also led the French league for key passes, 40 more than any other player in Ligue 1. An impressive 117 in total at a rate of 3.25 per game. The 134 chances that the 28-year-old created last season saw him set up a team mate every 23 minutes"

        1. Skipdipper

Payet also likes to have a dig from outside the box

        Ligue 1:

        Payet = 57 goals + 82 assists from 305 apps

        Ayew = 47 goals + 19 assists from 182 apps

No doubt Payet the more prolific assister, but I reckon Ayew has the better nose for goal.

Comparing the last 100 game would offer better insight really. The bearing that games 1 and 2 have in me assessing a guy that has played 300 is really non-existent.

Just to put Arsenals home defeat to West Ham into perspective:

In 2013/14, Arsenal lost their opening game 3-1 at home to Aston Villa, in a match everybody expected them to win comfortably.

Their next game, they beat Fulham 3-1 away.

They then did not lose another Premier League game until November.

    Just sayin'...

tbf I was more hoping someone would have a single suggestion of a team they supported.

Scoured Twitter for the fans' reactions to each of their clubs' line ups, and I've since discovered that none of the favourites have fielded particularly strong teams.

For that reason I've gone for a fivefold for good value.

I really enjoyed watching Gomez in pre season and the composure is quite something for a kid of that age.

However, there are obvious reasons for preferring a naturally left-footed progressive fullback with a good cross when playing BOU and with a striker that leaps like a salmon in your team.

I'm not going to be at all surprised if he plays again, but I will not be at all surprised if he doesn't. There could be a *lot* of upset people on these boards imo

We'll take our chances. The lad doesn't need his confidence dented, needs a few handy games to put the pressure on Moreno/Flanagan.

Perhaps. But I don't know the lad and maybe he is more mentally robust than you imagine. I think it's clear there is an ongoing commitment to developing in and amongst it.

I'm not claimng he's a bad pick but to use as your one and only Ft when-the assist to the wonder goal aside-he offers little attacking threat in a team that has been iffy at the back under Rodgers doesn't really justify the risk.

If you've transferred him in It goes without saying that you'll take your chances. You already have.

Used bench boost GW1 as I want to slowly get rid of any squad players and just have a strong starting XI but only got 39 points. Now considering WC. Have used FT this week Jagielka -> Gomez and have £1m ITB. As it stands lining up like this for GW2.

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Gomez Kos Ivanovic (Mert) (Francis)
    Sig Cazorla Ritchie Hazard Cabaye
    Berahino Rooney (C) (Wilson)
