Aston Villa’s mass overhaul continued apace with the capture of Barcelona winger Adama Traore on a five-year deal. The former Spain U19 international – who became the Villains’ tenth new recruit this summer – said that the West Midlands club was his favoured transfer destination:

“It’s an honour for me to come here. It’s a club that showed interest in me from the first moment and made me feel important in terms of their project. I have spoken to the manager and have a very good impression of him and what he wants from me. All this have made this club my top attraction. I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone at FC Barcelona for helping me develop as a player and as a person.”

The History

Born in Catalonia, Traore enrolled at Barcelona’s world-renowned La Masia academy in 2004, where he would spend the next nine years learning his trade. It wasn’t until 2013 that Traore earned a spot in the Barcelona B team, who competed in the second tier of Spanish football.

After making his debut for the reserves in October 2013, Traore was afforded regular starts in the second half of the campaign; he went on to bag five goals and four assists across 26 outings at the right-wing berth, clocking 1462 minutes in the process. The 2013/14 season also saw the precocious 17-year-old make his competitive bow for the senior team, with brief cameos arriving in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Traore was a permanent fixture for the B team the following term, tallying three goals and 14 assists in 37 outings. Despite his best efforts, they were relegated from Segunda Division, having finished nine points adrift of safety at the foot of the table. Traore would notch a further two starts for the senior squad in the Copa del Rey tournament, netting a brilliant solo goal in an 8-1 demolition of third-tier side Huesca.

Still just 19 years of age, Traore has represented Spain at the U16, U17 and U19 levels. His last run-outs on the international stage occurred in the summer of 2014, when he bagged two assists for Spain in the group stages of the U19 European Championship.

The Prospects

Sherwood was clearly delighted with his coup after announcing the deal. Discussing his new acquisition with the local press, the Villa boss revealed he’s been a long-term admirer of Traore, though was quick to confirm he’ll be allowed time to settle:

“He’s someone I have been tracking for a long time. He’s physically a man – and he has been for some time. He’s a big powerful boy, very quick, dynamic and a maverick-type player. He stays wide, picks the ball up, runs at defenders and doesn’t give them a minute’s peace. We are delighted he has chosen Aston Villa to continue his development, but that is what it is (development). He is not the finished article by any means. He is certainly a player who can help us out now, but for the long term future he could be magnificent.”

Traore has been deployed on the left wing on the rare occasion, but the bulk of his youth career has been spent on the right flank. Despite boasting an explosive turn of pace that enables him to steal a march on most opposing full-backs, the Catalonian winger displays a propensity for cutting inside and shooting with his less-favoured (left) foot – which perhaps explains he was only able to muster three goals last term.

Akin to Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend, Traore’s decision-making has been pinpointed as a prime area for improvement. Pooling all the players from the Segunda Division and Europe’s top five leagues, Traore (243) attempted 63 more dribbles than the next-most prolific ball-hogger, Eden Hazard (180). Considering that the young Spaniard falls well short of the Belgian superstar in terms of end product, Sherwood will likely need to reign in this aspect of Traore’s play in the Premier League.

Couple the recruitment of Traore and Jordan Ayew with the imminent return of injured duo Carles Gil and Jack Grealish, in addition to the likes of Scott Sinclair and Gabby Agbonlahor, and it’s clear that Sherwood has a bevy of wide options at his disposal – that’s before you factor in the possibility of Leandro Bacuna adopting an advanced role, as he did in pre-season.

Sherwood has utilised a 4-3-3 in the first couple of fixtures but may switch to a 4-2-3-1 set-up in light of their recent arrivals, with Grealish or Gil operating at the number ten berth. With Ayew favourite to take up the right flank berth in a lone striker system, Traore would be pushing Sinclair for a start on the left in such a set-up. Alternatively, the Villains could operate with a 4-4-2, which could allow Ayew to moved up top and hand Traore the role on the right.

Having scored just once in the opening two Gameweeks, though, it’s fair to say that most Fantasy managers will be steering well clear of Villa’s attacking recruits until they start to look a little more cohesive after a summer of restructuring.

In spite of a relatively kind price of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a strong quartet of upcoming fixtures (cry, SUN, lei, WBA), Traore looks likely to be eased into contention ensuring that he’s to be filed under “one for the future”.

Upon the consensus that Silva is better than Hazard given his upcoming fixture, can you improve this front 7?

    Silva, Sanchez, Payet, Ayew
    Aguero, Pelle, Gomis

Fairly weak. Havnt decided on players yet but something like:

        4.5, 4.5
        5.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0 with about 0.3 ITB

Calum Wilson somehow survived the drop today, but it's for sure that he'll drop tomorrow. So, it's time to replace him I believe.

I think it'll be best to replace him with another 5.5 forward in my team which will require using 1FT rather than 2, but I need help from you guys to decide who that forward will be.

Deeney seems to be the obvious choice. But I saw that Zarate is also 5.5 playing in a much better team. But is he nailed ? Others are Kone, but I'm finding it hard to trust him. Also the likes of Jerome, Defoe, Agbonlahor are there too.

Or should I use 2FTs that I've and upgrade Wilson to Gomis or even Lukaku by downgrading either Mane or Ozil.

    Suggestions please. Thanks!

    Pelle Rooney Sakho

    Subs: Mignolet Francis Coates Bentaleb

Already used one FT this gameweek to do Wally > Ayew.
So one FT left with 2m itb.

Would prefer not to Wildcard, but it is a possibilty.

You need Kun and ASAP. i would WC TBH. Sterling Francis, Ritchie, Sterling, Cedric, Coates, Bentaleb all need to go. Basically your whole team needs a make over.

Get triple city, Sanchez and either Kane or Benteke.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 10 Years

"Your whole team needs a makeover". 😕

Bizarre comment. The GKs have great fixtures. Francis (who you say needs to go) has great fixtures for the next 6 weeks. Same goes for Ritchie. Same goes for Sterling who also happens to be a City player (of whom you want him to get three). Soares has 3 very good fixtures upcoming immediately. Bentaleb is a bench midfielder and no priority. "Your whole team needs a makeover"? Ridiculous.

As for the "must get" players, Aguero has a poor goals record against Everton and is away, also he hasn't even started a game yet. No rush. Sanchez is not the safety valve that everyone thinks and is expensive at 11.0. Kane is in poor form and was subbed off yesterday. So that's bad advice too.

Moving Ritchie before his price drop might have been worthwhile but that has happened now. The best thing to do with that team as far as I can see is to save FT allowing a double transfer including Aguero for Rooney in GW4.

My Curtois to Adrian transfer didn't go so well. Mad to go without a keeper for a week (presumably, or is it 3?) and focus on improving the rest of the team? Don't want to waste another transfer on a keeper.

Ooh that's a toughie. I can understand your reasoning for wanting to improve the rest of the team, but if it's not too bad then it seems mad getting a guaranteed 0 points from one of your positions. What is the rest of your team?

Rest of the team is pretty template, I want to get Aguero in for Rooney though which requires a couple of trades. I agree it makes no sense having a zero player but I thought that last week and I wasted a trade and got -1 for it!! 🙂

10.5 is a lot of money to have tied up in a player who 'could' come good. For that money you want more of a guarantee.

This is true but I've done Wilson to Gomis this week as want Gomis in my wildcard team and didn't want price rise to hit me and want ideally to wildcard gw4 and not gw3 and City could easily risk aguero today and then rest him v Everton instead of vice versa

He could knick a goal and get you 9 points, but his involvement in the game is nil at the moment. He was more of a threat in midfield ironically.

Didn't see the Spurs game so figured a lot of it was "oh it's just one game" but in the villa match. Jeez his touch was awful! My touch is better and I'm currently recovering from a torn achilles! And zero threat. I know all this. To be fair if his price change is likely then that could force my hand

    Morning boys!!

Posted this last night, maybe a bit late, so hopefully I'll get few replies today.

Thought about it... Talked myself out of it... Then took the WC plunge! What do you reckon??

    Butland (Myhill)
Azpilicueta - Bellerin - Gomez (Huth - Francis)
Hazard - Payet - Milner - Mahrez (Coquelin)
    Aguero - Benteke - Gomis

    1.5M ITB

It's subject to some tweaking over the coming week (specifically Coquelin who I've been having second thoughts on since the season kicked off), but I wanted to not miss out on the current price of Gomis and Payet.

    Appreciate your advice guys.

Looks good but I would use the 1.5 to upgrade Coquelin.

        Cheers mate.

The 1.5M is definitely intended to improve Coquelin, but since the WC is in play now and Coquelin's value is going nowhere I though I'd wait to see the other games. I've a couple of initial thoughts...

Zaha (not sure if he's nailed), Redmond, Hoolahan, Grealish (when fit).

        Any thoughts?

Not bad at all. Would go chadli over Milner. Tekkers is enough pool coverage I think?

        Thanks mate.

On the Milner selection, I a Red myself (if the grav doesn't give that away), so I feel I want to commit to our boys with more than a coverage of 1, and I do really feel Milner has lots of goal, assist and bonus point potential this year.

If it wasn't for this, I think Chadli would be my replacement.

Since you already have Sanchez I'd go with Silva. So mabye Ayew > Silva.

This still leaves you with 1m itb though, so you could have a 5 -man midfield.
It really depends on whether you prefer 2 strikers or just the one.

Not bad planning, different planning. Chelsea began their pre-season a week later than most in order to give the players a good, long holiday.

Whether that will pay off in time remains to be seen.

Swansea started a week earlier than most (2 weeks earlier than Chelsea) and that certainly seems to have worked.
