The community got their stop watches out this week as they discussed the media storm created by the exact timing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares’s substitution last weekend. As well as Cedricgate, we also cast our eye over the key community articles and hot topics looking ahead to Gameweek 10’s matches. In addition, we’ve squeezed in an extra few minutes to focus on some of the most eye catching latest Members tables and events in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

To help get prepared for Gameweek 10, three of our regular community writers were on hand to offer advice on transfers, bench decisions and captaincy issues.

Your Mum’s Athletic’s latest What The Bookies Say looks at captaincy options, clean sheet potential and likely outcomes of the weekend’s matches based on bookmakers odds.

Elsewhere, Rodellegabomb has been casting his eye over the latest bandwagons and The Serjeant has been looking at possible shut outs, a key player to consider and team form going into Gameweek 10.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Our Hall of Fame, featuring the best managers over a number of seasons, has been updated to take into account Gameweek 9’s event.

This prompted The Colonel to take an indepth look at the Hall of Fame top 50 and compare this bunch of ‘old pros’ with the lucky ‘casuals’ currently topping the Fantasy Premier League.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Liverpool’s first home clash in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp is among the key matches the community is keeping an eye on. Klopp’s team ran Spurs ragged last weekend as his ‘Gegenpressing’ strategy of knackering out your own team as well as the opposition took effect. But, pondered Wakey, how can injury prone Daniel Sturridge fit into this system?

Another keenly anticipated match is between free-scoring Leicester and away specialists Crystal Palace. Despite being benched for the last two matches JazzliHD urges caution before transferring out Riyad Mahrez. He believes his display as a substitute in Gameweek 9, where he earned an assist, will be enough to convince Tinkerman Claudio Ranieri to reinstate him into the starting line up.

If Mahrez does start and produces the goods, he adds his name to an already-congested midfielder watchlist. With so many wingers and attacking midfielders vying for our attention, we asked whether it was time to return to a power five formation, with just two strikers. For Valar Mesut Ozil is among those deserving of a place amongst this elite group.

Further advice going into Gameweek 10 was on hand from Zasa, who has been trawling the latest statistics to serve up a wealth of numbers on everything from attacking potential to clean sheets. There were further names to consider for those looking to steal a march on their mini-league rivals in our hot topic on Gameweek 10’s best differentials.

We also looked back what Gameweek 9 has taught us in Rough with the Smooth, with failed early transfers during an international break of players a key lesson learned for a number of our community members.

Another key event from Gameweek 9 under discussion was Cedricgate, which sparked a national press and Twitter debate after community regular Fuzzy Warbles questioned FPL’s decision not to award Southampton defender Cedric Soares clean sheet points when substituted around the 60 minute mark.

After taking a battering from journalists and the Twitterati, as well as praise on our Scoutcast, Fuzzy returned later in the week with his views on the media storm his letter to FPL created.

Looking further ahead Gameweek 11’s shift in the fixtures, where Everton and Manchester United embark on kind runs, is set to dominate discussion next week. We covered the subject in our latest Scoutcast and also asked the community how they planned to address this change in fixtures.

The Members Tables

With Gameweek 11’s fixture shift in mind, tillster2003 has taken a look at the best Everton defenders last year as a reminder of their potential.

Knightrider’s latest table considers the attacking threat of Steve McClaren’s Newcastle – another team with good upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Scorcher Prime has been looking at the best and worst defences so far this season.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Colin Bothwell had quite a week in Gameweek 9. His score of 67 was enough to propel him to the top of RedLightning’s Top 10K Any Season mini-league. Colin now leads 10 mini-leagues, including AZ’s cash league, thanks to his overall FPL rank of 175.

Balders dropped by with news of a new five-a-side themed tournament set up by recently-formed FFScout community group Fédération Internationale de Fantaisie Football Scout Association( FIFFSA). Meanwhile, the latest standings from Balders’ Grand Play-Off competition can be found here.

Jaffalicious sent this update of the latest standings in his FFS UEFA Champions League competition, while in TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Sushant hit the top score in Gameweek 9 with 105. There are now 1873 teams that have qualified for LMS, after 149 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 38.

Finally, it was business as usual in the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league with Andy extending his lead over second-placed Greenwindmill.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

A lot of team and transfer talk obviously going on so firstly i'm sorry to break the pattern. Now that all of last weeks storms have settled down I just wandered what peoples thoughts were regarding the assists rules in FPL?

I did have a bit of an issue last week with Pelle not earning an assist. Using the terms of the rules - I did find the fact that Van Dijk was deemed to have made the "final pass" before a goal was scored a little odd. Keep in mind a few weeks ago Butland earned an assist for his hoof up pitch which actually got intercepted by a Leicester player before attempting to play it back to his GK.

Is there not something a little bit unfair in ruling out assists should a player hit the woodwork? And is the term "final pass" in the rules a bit vague when talking about attempts on goal by the actual goalscorer?

I do want to add I totally understand why Pelle didn't get the assist and accept it now. Van Dijk was deemed to have assisted himself, but surely there could be an argument that a lot more goals were actually assisted by the goalscorer themselves? I hope some can understand the point i'm trying to make. Sorry for the long post.

True, Think of all the goalscorers who assist their own penalties. That's a lot of points lost, points which could of gone to a different player had somebody else won or taken the penalty.

That's not quite the point I was making. I'm thinking more along the lines of Sagna and Pelle from last week. Who both were heavily involved in creating goals (they was the last player from the scoring team to play the ball before the goal) but didn't earn an assist.

Yes, I was just building on the points you made. Say if a goalscorer assisted his own goal, like Van Dijk last weekend, do you think an assist should go to the person who passed it to the goalscorer?

Yes exactly that. I mean look at the goal in real life view (not fantasy). Surely you would say Pelle played a massive part in Van Dijk scoring. Softer assists are given - I guess that's my point.

I agree, I dislike the idea that there are "ghost assists" where if a goalscorer assists his own goal then no points are awarded. Same with penalties, the assist isn't awarded to the person who won it if they also take it and score so it could be interesting if the assist went to the player who passed to the player who wins the penalty. It's slightly complicated.

Yeah. I do think the fairest thing would be to assist the final player to play the ball before the goalscorer regardless of what happens in between. Cheers for you comments,

Lol yeah i'm over it now (I've had worst weeks!). My worry now is when I see some goals i'm not going to be sure whether an assist has been awarded or not, at least not without checking FPL points there and then.

Yep I know (and agree) with that. Shouldn't the final pass maker to the goalscorer always get the assist though? Why does how many attempts the goalscorer take to put it in the net have anything to do with it?

It ultimately comes down to the fact that Van Dijk missed the chance created by Pelle and a new phase of play began. I think it's reasonable, pretty sure no stats site will consider that a Pelle assist, in most cases FPL are generous. In many games Pelle wouldn't even have got the assist if Van Dijk had put the first rebound away - it's not like Pelle passed the ball!

Transfermarkt for instance - always a great source of stats, no assist awarded: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/2577983

        It's basically industry standard.

Just checked that site out for the Stoke v Leicester game. Unless i'm mistaken they didn't give Butland an assist, FPL did. You've got me more down by showing me that site 😉 . Just kidding, but the whole assist thing is a bit random.

Yeah, the Butland one was dodgy, no doubt - definitely not an assist by most people's definition but just about allowable under FPL rules (although I'd dispute it)

The Pelle one just isn't an assist by anyone's definition.

Like I say, FPL are generous - when assists aren't awarded its usually because there's no justification for it.

(Transfermarkt is an excellent source of data by the way. The interface is a pain but the stats are superb)

Yeah it looks a good site thanks for sharing. Yep my main point was really always the same - I accept the Pelle one wasn't an assist but then why are some other (softer) assist given? I'm going purely by FPL's rule page on this (not so much real life views/other sites).

I did bring up the Brunt assist last week which I guess no one really cared about because nobody owns him! 🙂 . I notice again FPL gave him an assist (which by what they done with Pelle I though shouldn't have been awarded).

I notice that site also didn't give it btw... another difference to FPL. I'm going to be monitoring this. Appreciate your help,

I guess that's true. My issue with the "new phase" thing is that there is no clear mention of this on the rules page. There isn't actually a clear statement that says once a player shoots at goal (and doesn't score) a new phase begins and any previous assist is no longer valid.

But even with that there would be an inconsistency in my eyes. I mean look at the Butland assist that was given (the obvious one for me to compare it to)? An opposition player even got hold of the ball before the goal was eventually scored. To me there is something flawed when that one is counted and the Pelle one from last week isn't.

Awesome band. I have many of their albums and have seen them perform multiple times, sheet, back in 1995 even...I prefer Gish and Siamese Dream, but that is an great album, too.

        Brilliant episode.

Walkman666 I can see why you prefer Siamese Dream as to me that's almost 6 of this and half a dozen of the other.

For me the second best album is Adore.

Disk 2 of Mellon Collie is just bliss to me. Especially Thru the Eyes of Ruby

    And should I start Ighalo?

    Darmian Kolarov Richards Morgan Gomez
    Payet KDB Sanchez Ayew Mahrez
    Vardy Martial Pelle

I want to sell Gomez before the drops in price so Gomez to Bellerin or Gomez to someone cheaper?

Hey guys. Have been away in Scotland this week so just catching up with the Scout now. Good to be back.

Have just got the lowdown on Cedricgate. Fuzzy, I'm right behind you.

Do we think that Gomis will start this weekend? If not, I'm keen to get rid but who for? So many options but I can't make up my mind. Already have Vardy and Pelle.

Oh, and if there are any trainee journalists on here, learning shorthand is currently the bane of my existence!

    Cheers guys.

I'd probably keep Gomis now if you haven't already shipped.

Gives you another week to assess all the options.

    Hey guys

I've had a couple really bad works, fell from 1st in my league to 23rd! How is this looking for GW10?

    Cech (Myhill)
    Dier, Cedric, Zouma (Kolarov, Martin)
    Ayew, Mahrez, Sanchez, Wijnaldum (Lanzini)
    Costa, Vardy, Pelle

    Anything worth changing?

How did you fall with Wijnaldum? 🙂

Looks good to me, I'd probably play Kolarov and Martin actually.

Rest of my team played extremely poor, I've only just transferred in Sanchez, Vardy and Costa after a bit of an overhaul!

I was thinking Kola but personally think the 3 I'm using are more likely to keep a clean sheet
