Harry Kane continues his fine form by bagging the opener in the North London derby. Mesut Ozil earns yet another assist as Arsenal salvage a late point. City are held to a goalless draw by Villa in Remi Garde’s first match in charge, whilst goals from Yannick Bolasie and Scott Dann hand Jurgen Klopp his first loss at the Liverpool helm.

City Toil on their Travels Again

Manchester City were held to a 0-0 stalemate at Villa Park, marking the third road trip in succession that they’ve failed to record a victory. On the flip side, the Sky Blues have now earned clean sheets in all but one of their away matches this campaign, underlining the merits of investing in their rearguard. With Gael Clichy back in the matchday squad and Pablo Zabaleta nearing a return, though, Vincent Kompany could represent their only sure-fire defensive starter beyond the international break. Yesterday’s match means the league leaders have conceded just once in eight outings with the Belgian on board – he’s second only to Riyad Mahrez (7.3 to 7.9) for points per appearance this season.

Wilfried Bony’s 6% ownership were left to bemoan their bad luck when the Ivorian frontman sustained a hamstring complaint and had to be replaced in the 25th minute. Considering he’s a doubt for Man City’s home clash against Liverpool in a fortnight’s time and Manuel Pellegrini is hopeful of a return for Sergio Aguero, Bony owners will be looking for a way out.

Garde Halts Villa’s Losing Streak

Remi Garde commandeered the Villans to a hard-fought draw in his first match at the helm, securing the hosts’ first shut-out since a trip to Bournemouth in Gameweek 1 – much to the ire of the 24,000 managers that shipped out Micah Richards prior to the encounter. Although their next quartet of fixtures (eve, WAT, sou, ARS) mainly looks tough for defensive returns, yesterday’s result will certainly instill plenty of confidence around Villa Park.

Garde enacted six changes from the side that lost to Spurs last time out, benching the likes of Jack Grealish, Leandro Bacuna and Joleon Lescott. In the process of grinding out a result, Villa failed to card a single attempt on target for the first time since August 2014, illuminating their paucity of goal threat. Given that they’ve posted four blanks in their previous seven outings and will be a team in flux until Garde determines his first XI, few will be prepared to jump on board for now.

Gibbs Rescues Gunners

The North London derby ended all-square at the Emirates, with Kieran Gibbs the unlikely scorer of Arsenal’s late leveller. Mesut Ozil delivered the cross for the left-back to prod home, perpetuating his sublime run of form; the German international has notched eight assists in his last six starts, boosting his tally to 10 for the season. Alexis Sanchez looked out of rhythm and registered his third consecutive blank, which might encourage some owners to explore Ozil as a cheaper (8.8 compared to 11.6) source of Gunners coverage. Indeed, in terms of consistency, there’s no question that Ozil is the more reliable – he’s produced points in eight of his 11 league outings, whereas Sanchez has delivered in only four of his 12 appearances.

Arsenal now embark on an excellent quartet of matches (wba, nor, SUN, avl) that includes three trips away from their home turf. Considering Arsene Wenger’s men tallied 11 goals in their last trio of road ties, it’s no surprise to see that Ozil has already earned almost 40,000 new owners since the weekend, more than any midfielder in the FPL game.

Kane Nets Again

Harry Kane capitalised on some slack defending from the Gunners to open the scoring and grab his fifth goal in three league starts. Allied with his strike against Anderlecht in midweek, the Walthamstow-born marksman has clearly begun to find his groove following a lethargic start to the campaign. No forward amassed more shots on target (11) than Kane over the last four Gameweeks, providing further incentive to snap up the 9.3-priced striker ahead of a decent schedule (WHU, CHE, wba, NEW).

Danny Rose showcased his proclivity for attacking returns by recording an assist for the third Gameweek on the trot. Moreover, he now ranks top among defenders for attempts (six) across the last four Gameweeks, which suggests that his first goal of the term could be on the horizon. The presence of three home matches in the next four Gameweeks bodes well for a back line that’s conceded just four goals at White Hart Lane.

Klopp Suffers First Reds Loss

Liverpool fell to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace. After going behind early on, Philippe Coutinho restored parity for the Reds three minutes before the break, while Adam Lallana grabbed his maiden assist of the season. The former now boasts three goals in two outings and fashioned more attempts (14) than any midfielder over the last four Gameweeks. Beyond a challenging trip to Manchester City next time out, Liverpool’s schedule (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) provides a perfect platform for the 8.2-priced Brazilian to bolster his attacking output.

At the back, though, Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of Mamadou Sakho after the defender was forced off with a knee injury towards the end of the first=half. A possible period on the sidelines could offer the 4.9-priced Dejan Lovren a way back to the starting XI and, along with Alberto Moreno (4.8), offer Fantasy managers options in the sub-5.0 bracket.

Eagles Bask in Away Comforts

A 2-1 victory at Anfield marked Palace’s tenth road win of the calendar year – only Arsenal (11) lay claim to a superior tally. With Dwight Gayle sidelined and Connor Wickham only fit enough for a cameo role, Alan Pardew surprisingly deployed Bakary Sako and Yannick Bolasie in the central forward positions. The latter broke the deadlock after 21 minutes, netting his second goal of the campaign – indeed, Bolasie has now scored two of Palace’s last five goals and with some excellent fixtures (SUN, NEW, eve, SOU, sto, bou) to follow, he’s starting to look like a viable option at just 6.1.

Scott Dann carded his second goal in nine outings to fire the visitors back into the lead at the 82-minute mark. Palace’s defence has tightened up of late – surrendering just five goals in six outings – which draws attention to their rearguard assets. Priced at 5.1, Dann now sits fifth amongst defenders in the FPL game and, given that Joel Ward (4.4) had to settle for a bench role yesterday, the centre-half looks the most likely source of points from Pardew’s improving rearguard.

    Newcastle (a), Man United (h), Swansea (a), Chelsea (h), Everton (a), Liverpool (a), Man City (h)

Yeah this is the problem. Even at 7.4 he's great value. I think I might start looking at a way to get Aguero and him in for Mitrovic/Pelle. Probably involves a Sanchez downgrade though.

Sanchez downgrade could be alright, he hasn't been great recently, especially, if you're bringing in Ozil...in the process of writing an article, "Budget Alternatives", one of the comparisons is Ozil as a budget alternative to Sanchez. Keep an eye out for that. 🙂

If I'd lose any of the big guns, it'd be KDB first though, like Doolittle said.

Mesut Özil has now broken the record for most assists in consecutive Premier League games (6).

Mesut Özil has now made 10 assists this season. Already more than in all of last season (9).

Mesut Özil needs just 11 more assists to break Henry's Premier league assist record (20) with 26
    games still left.

Mesut Ozil is the first player to assist 10+ goals in his first 11 appearances of a PL season.

Mesut Ozil covered more ground (10.5 km) than any other Arsenal player against Tottenham.

If Payet is out of next week and Aguero doesn't look promising taht would be ideal as I can play Eriksen as my 5th midfielder for one week. If it is a week longer than that it becomes tricky as I need to pull the funds out of Eriksen soon to afford Aguero. Selling Payet leaves me just short and tbh I just like Payet a whole lot more than Erik.

Hindsight is a marvellous thing. The answer is because I have a great front 8 and Mata had the worst form out of the lot. Also WBA were very good again defensively away...just two slip ups cost them dear.

Who would you have dropped (not with hindsight, if you were making choices on a Friday) out of

Mahrez, Vardy, Pelle, Bony, KDB, Sanchez, Payet, Mata.

But I do thank you for making me feel better about my score. Your 21 pts for the week is a true rough one. 😉

Unlucky with Mata Jonty, was the right move beforehand but always a risk ay.

I've dodged a bullet with this power 8 switch that lot's players have been making recently. Got stung last year which put me off dong it again.

Has pros and cons such a move of course and with so much money floating about I can see why many people went for it.

Obviously it helps you to cope with injuries better and dodge tricky one off fixtures but I do think it increases the chance of making a mistakes. Be interesting to know if the move overall has paid off for people or not.

It's great to see a moronic comment get slammed so competently 🙂

I have no regrets about benching Mata myself, I still believe it was the right call at the time. Nice to see him score though, it means he remains on pens and his price will no longer drop. Some good fixtures to come.

Yes indeed. I was worried about the drop over the int. break. And now with Bony injured I can actually play him potentially next gameweek. He could even end up doing well for me over the next few gwks.

Dropping Mata was, at the time, the right call by Jonty - I remember his front 8 was ridiculous and Mata was the out of form one. Just unlucky to bench him for 9 points, after playing him ahead of Mahrez for Mahrez's 15 pointer (especially when you add Mahrez giving away the penalty this week).

There are 50/50 decisions in this game that make you look stupid in hindsight - I've called a lot of them incorrectly recently. Being Captain Hindsight about it isn't dignifying.

Quite right. I made this point as well when people were saying the same to Giggs Boson on Sat, as he also benched Mata. Saying it before is one thing - as you did the week before re benching Mahrez. That's perfectly fine and to be honest I wish I'd listened.

But to say it afterwards with hindsight is poor form.

Yep, and I'm pretty sure I advised you to bench Mata this week - sorry about that 😉

Got to just accept these things and move on, there's a lot of luck involved. For instance, Mahrez taking the penalty would have made my 50/50 captaincy call the right one, and would have justified you playing him. You also had Payet go off injured - that's impossible to predict.

              A game of fine margins.

Bony was the clincher as well this week. Deliberatly went with a differential captain to get a lead. Backfired through injury. Can't predict that.

Looking to switch back to a benchable fifth mid and more standard captaincy options from now on as I look to revive the season.

Really tough call. I actually benched Eriksen and played Mata, which worked out very well, but it could easily have gone the other way, like it did when I (along with everyone else) benched Mahrez at WBA.

                Those the breaks, eh...

Triple City Attack since my masterfully played WC pre-GW 11, since then I've been raking up the points in City's 2-1 demolishing of Norwich, and the absolute humiliation of Villa in GW 12. All 3 of my players scored 0 goals in this period. Captained Bony this GW too. 😎

        Where to start?

Only players who got any points were Rojo (5) and Vardy (9 but didn't captain).

Mahrez (c) gave up his pen to Vardy, Ighalo hit the post, Payet injured, KDB missed from 2 yards out, used my 2nd FT on Moreno when Richards stayed on my bench with 6.

Coutinho scoring again was a blow as I keep bringing him in due to his stats in the full knowledge that he will eventually do it...I did ship him out for Ozil though a few weeks ago so...oh hum...

Boring week, ok score but another red arrow (that's 5 in a row now) benched Payet which turned out to be the correct decision.
Sanchez has gone off the boil a bit, and Mane disappoints again. He never scores when I own him, captained him this week and last week, gonna get shot of him AGAIN in 2 GWs time.

Same as everyone else really. Mahrez captain but don't own Vardy so that felt even worse.

For the second week in a row, my DDG transfer has been a mixed bag. 15 points from his 2 games for me, but still a whole clean sheet down on Butland's 21 on the bench over the same period. It's saved me a dilemma, but cost me some points.

The Norwich goal cost Williamss owners too, as he was cruising to 9 points. 7 points was a big swing this week.

Smooth - Pelle not getting sent off for two yellows, plus Lukaku is paying off, as is VVD and keeping Kompany.

Rough- one & truly Mahrez handing over the penalty! :/ payet injury probably means no benching headache next GW, I had Toby, I thought they might nick it 1-0, he even could've scored at 1-0, but header saved by cech!
Kolarov could've scored, possibly missed two goals in two games!

Smooth- I'd have held Martial, but got in Big Rom! For once, he didn't troll me! With aguero coming back soon, can settle down on a proper 3-4-3 instead of many combinations

PS- How about lingard as a 5th midfielder?

My weekend was both rough and smooth all in one, Saturday being very rough, Sunday being very smooth.

Saturday, having cedric meant I had double Leicester defence so deeney own was heartbreaking but not as much as my captain being Pelle (thankfully that ghost yellow card didn't happen). This with a benched Butland left me under 20 points.

Sunday however with coutinho, Ozil, Kolarov, Kane boosted me back above my peers to a very respectable 59 points and a green arrow.

Dropped 40k on Saturday but rose back up 50k on Sunday.

        Smooth:
        - Didnt take out Butland for DDG - Saved the transfer. Gave me a good 10 points and with Aguero coming back, an extra transfer in the kitty

        Rough:
        - Cedric didn't play (arggghhh) and Bellerin's injury + Turner (guess what? He doesnt exist now. I somehow got him before FPL took him out!) meant I didnt have anyone on the bench
        - Mahrez (C)
        - Watching benteke miss that big chance (header over the bar) from moreno's cross

Still managed a decent 47 points so not too discontent. But yea, gotta replace cedric soon.

Rough was the City clean sheet as although I have Kolarov my rival has triple City defence and so now has a 28 point clear lead on me!

The Rough: Seven out of seven blanks in attack (with Tadic on the bench and a Bony (c) fail)

The Smooth: Four out of four clean sheets in defence (with 2 baps from Smalling and an assist from Bertie to boot)

Funny game week all in all. Pretty sure it's the first time I've ever had all my defenders return while all my attackers fail. Annoyed to be stung for the second week in a row by benching my highest scoring attacker (Mahrez last week), but as Jonty had said, it's easy to be wise after the event. Rank fell from 6,000ish to 12,000 ish, so still in a strong enough position at this stage.

i'll back up your mata misfortune. he completed his hatrrick of trolling for me:
gw10: played mata, ighalo 1st sub.
gw11: played mata, ighalo first sub.
gw12: played ighalo, mata first sub.

i fancied lingard to start and didn't want to gamble on it being for herrera instead of mata (in the past few weeks lingard had always been eating into mata's game time, not herrera's). also even if he did start i didn't trust his form, or chances of playing over 60-70mins.

of course he choose this match to play his first full match since september and got his first penalty of the season (one of the main reason i have him), which came in the last minute meaning he had to play the full 90

Captained Mahrez as I actually had a dream Leicester got a penalty - we know how that went.

Benched Kane > Payet - Payet went off injured, Kane scored and got 2 bonus points.

TV up to 105.9m so happy I can afford a really good team once Aguero and Silva come back.

          Pretty mild rough here:
I had so many good attacking options, so I decided to pull out the AoA:
7/8 blanked. 1 pointer from Pelle, Mane and Payet.

The smooth was getting Vardy (C) correct, as well as Butland.

Aguero instead of ???? You need to do major changes since you don't have enough ITB for him, do it early as well not in 2-3 weeks because his price will probably rise... I bought it now..

Probably my worst ever week on FL. 32 pts, AOA played.

Not one of my front 8 scored or got an assist. KDB, Mane, Mahrez(C), Ayew, Sanchez, Pelle, Ighalo,Bony.

Really painful. Thankfully I did Myhill->DDG.

Not a time to panic I guess. Any suggestions for below?

        DDG,

        Bellerin, Kompany, Moreno;

        Sanchez, Ayew, Mane, Mahrez, KDB;

        Pelle, Bony;

Yeah my plan was always one of Pelle/Bony to Aguero & Mane/Ayew to Alli.

It was always going to be Bony -> Aguero sometime after the international break.
But there could be a nightmare scenario where neither are fit enough to start in GW13.

A sideways move Bony -> Lukaku -> Aguero for a couple of games might be more sensible.

As you can see I have 3 City players and when Aguero comes , I will remove one of Yaya/Sterling

Plus , I do not see many mids with higher goal threat than Yaya atm....can you suggest some?

                          ..what about it?

                          It's double those of yaya.

Historically Coutinho's coversion rate is poor and Yaya's conversion rate has been always high (apart from this season)

                        yaya has mony more

                        Ozil has just 6

Wijnaldum, Walters, Mahrez, Mane, Payet, and even Lallana.

You don't fancy Ozil for 8.7m? Ozil will outscore Yaya in the next few weeks, easily. Your loss mate. Yaya has greater goal threat, sure. Ozil schools him in the assist department though, and will most definitely get more assists than Yaya goals.

I know its a desperate but I wouldn't waste a transfer upgrading your 5th mid esp with Kun on the horizon

I just did Bego to DdG. Enough was enough with all those 'great fixtures'. Conceding to Stoke was the last straw for me. Have no other concerns is important part of the decision though.

Mignolet fast becoming one of the worst goalies in Pool history. I'd even rate Kirkland higher than him.

What's the deal with Mignolet though? Beginning of the season people were bashing him, then suddenly he was good again.
He's a great GK between the posts but outside of them or whenever he has to play with his feet, it's painfull to see.

And he's certainly not FPL material aswell, too inconsistent

the term 'great shot stopper' should be banned when describing goalies now. that should be a basic requirement. Mignolet is deficient in so many other areas that pulling off some great saves now and again is completely redundant. he's worth about 7-8 howlers a season now
