Sergio Aguero steps up his recovery from a hamstring complaint. Vincent Kompany misses training for Belgium, Antonio Valencia is set for a period on the sidelines, whilst James Milner pulls out of the England squad due to hamstring trouble.

Aguero Targets Gameweek 13 Return

Sergio Aguero is recovering well from a hamstring injury he sustained during the last international break and is targeting a return when Manchester City host Liverpool next Gameweek. Discussing his fitness with the club’s official website, the Argentine marksman revealed:

“I don’t think I’m too far away now. Physically, I feel good and I’ve kept as fit as I can during my lay-off. I still need to work hard for another week and if not this week, then maybe next, I hope to start training with the rest of the lads and so and my target is Liverpool. I’ll take things slowly and not rush into anything, but I’m not far away.”

The Scout Says: For many Fantasy managers, drafting Aguero back into their 15-man squads will be an essential exercise. Despite the fact that there are a number of mid-priced forwards enjoying purple patches, the City striker’s explosive potential – as evidenced by his five-goal haul against Newcastle prior to picking up the hamstring injury during the previous international break – is head and shoulders above any other armband option. With the likes of Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo offering budget-friendly options up front, many will be looking to free up cash as City prepare for a run of four home matches in the next six. Providing Aguero is passed fit, he’ll be difficult to ignore with a mere 10% ownership underlining his differential appeal.

Kompany Misses Belgium Training

Local reports indicate that Vincent Kompany missed Belgium’s first training session due to a minor calf problem yesterday.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind that Kompany played for his country against the wishes of Manuel Pellegrini in the last batch of internationals, it remains to be seen whether yesterday’s omission was merely precautionary. The Belgian’s importance to City’s defensive prospects is laid bare by the statistics – the league leaders have conceded just one goal in eight matches with Kompany on board compared to eight goals against in four outings without him. With Gael Clichy back in contention and Pablo Zabaleta closing in on a return, Kompany remains the most secure route into the City rearguard as rotation looms large in the full-back berths, though any possible spell on the sidelines would undoubtedly dent our faith in their ability to serve up the shut-outs.

Morrison Hopeful of Return

James Morrison is hoping that the international break will allow him to fully recover from a knock that he’s been nursing since West Bromwich Albion’s road defeat to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 8. The Scottish midfielder admitted that he’s lacked sharpness since jarring his leg:

“It’s not right at the moment. I’m struggling to get it better  this break’s going to be crucial for me to get my body right. It’s been a funny one  I just planted my foot against Crystal Palace and something happened. I’m working hard and I can deal with it at the moment. But this break will be nice for me to get it right and get some fitness and sharpness back and continue my form from the start of the season.”

The Scout Says: Priced at 4.8, Morrison has already surpassed his attacking output from the previous campaign (two goals and one assist), with two goals and as many assists arriving in less than a third of the time (692 minutes compared to 2553). Although Morrison ranks top among the Baggies’ midfielders for attempts (12), shots on target (seven) and key passes (12), West Brom’s joint-worst attacking record (10 goals) and the presence of more alluring options at his price range (the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Delle Alli and Marc Albrighton) diminish his appeal on the Fantasy market.

Palace Strike Pair Step Up Fitness Drive

Alan Pardew is adamant that Marouane Chamakh and Connor Wickham will be given no time to rest during the international break as he strives to improve their fitness. The Palace boss asserted that his charges have done exceptionally to accrue 19 points without their two prime forwards:

“Marouane Chamakh and Connor Wickham need a pre-season really, or a mini pre-season, so that’s what they’re going to get. They will get no time off. They will play and train in this break solidly at the training ground to make sure when we come back against Sunderland and Newcastle, we have the option of those two guys. If you look at any Premier League team, if you take your top two strikers out of it, we’ve done terrific really. To have Connor and Marouane back, I do think my hand is going to be stronger.”

The Scout Says: Although the Eagles have fared pretty well in the absence of a physical presence up top, it’s fair to day that they’ve struggled to exert their influence in and around the penalty box. Prior to Sunday’s win at Liverpool – which marked Wickham’s return from injury off the bench – Palace had scored just four times in seven matches without a target man leading the line. Having been afforded a 26-minute run-out at Anfield, the 5.5-priced Wickham is poised to reclaim a starting berth and, as such, harbours differential potential ahead of back-to-back favourable home ties (SUN, NEW) and clashes against Everton, Stoke and Bournemouth in the upcoming six.

Valencia Sidelined with Foot Injury

Antonio Valencia underwent surgery for a foot injury he sustained in the Manchester derby. The Ecuador international took to Twitter to break the news:

“Thank God came out well from the operation. Now think about my recovery”

The Scout Says: Valencia’s injury could be good news for Matteo Darmian’s prospects of nailing down the right-back berth once again. The 13%-owned Italian managed just two lots of 90 minutes in the six Gameweeks prior to last weekend’s win over West Brom, which he missed due to a one-match suspension, and he will be hoping to oust Ashley Young from Louis van Gaal’s first XI. Although United’s defence have conceded the fewest goals and notched the most clean sheets (both eight) in the first 12 Gameweeks, only Chris Smalling – at a price of 6.7 – looks immune from rotation. In saying that, Marcos Rojo has started the last four due to Luke Shaw’s long-term injury and, at a price of 5.5, could be another one to consider.

Cleverley looking to reclaim starting berth

Fit-again Tom Cleverley conceded that he faces a tall task trying to re-establish himself a regular starter for Everton. The ex-Manchester United recruit did, however, suggest that his versatility is an asset that Roberto Martinez could be keen to exploit:

“You always face a fight to get in the team at a club like Everton, especially with so many midfielders. So it is going to be tough getting back into the team and I knew that at the start of the season but I backed myself and, hopefully, when I played I helped the team get some good results. I was pleased with the way things had started here. I’d started all the games and sometimes settling in with a new team can be difficult but I didn’t feel that, it was easy. One of my qualities is my versatility, I can play central, I can play right or left and I’ve even played right-back this season. That’s one of my qualities and when I get asked to do a job, I can do it.”

The Scout Says: Before succumbing to injury at White Hart Lane in Gameweek 4, Cleverley had been named in the Toffees’ starting XI for every league match. Since then, Arouna Kone (three goals and one assist in last two outings) and Gerard Deulofeu (one goal and six assists in six) have stamped their authority on the wide berths, meaning that Cleverley will be consigned to substitute duty for the time being as he steps up his match sharpness. Everton’s attacking contingent as a whole are experiencing an upsurge of interest in light of their excellent schedule through to the New Year (AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO) and, whilst Cleverley’s return adds competition to the flanks, the 6.2-priced Deulofeu – with a goal and six assists in the last six – is shaping up as a viable contender to Ross Barkley as a route into the Toffees’ thriving midfield.

Milner Withdraws from England Duties

James Milner – who missed Liverpool’s home defeat to Crystal Palace by virtue of a hamstring strain – has pulled out of England’s squad prior to their pair of international friendlies.

The Scout Says: With a goal, three assists and a trio of bonus points in his previous five appearances, Milner had finally started to suggest he was worthy of our consideration. The arrival of Jurgen Klopp has given Philippe Coutinho a shot in the arm, though – the Brazilian has now served up back-to-back double-figure hauls, courtesy of three goals and six bonus points. Once their upcoming trip to City has passed, the Merseysiders’ following six fixtures (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) looks poised to pique our Fantasy interest, with Coutinho – at a price of 8.2 – looking their in-form option in the centre of the park.

While Ozil's form has finally picked up, we see a lot of people complaining that one of the reasons Arsenal won't win the league is because it does not have more players like Ozil, and that has something to do with the transfer window.

Obviously you can't have more players like Ozil, no team has 5-6 players who cost £50 million. The league has very few players of Ozil's quality. I'm not sure of many outside the league too.

I think Arsenal fans' problem, or at least what would be my problem, isn't that Wenger hasn't bought a load of £40m+ stars, it's that he hasn't bought ANYONE except Cech. Arsenal are lacking in squad depth, particularly in central midfield and up front, and they have an injury crisis every single season. Lo and behold, they're now having an injury crisis, and the squad is short.

They didn't need to buy a load of big names a la Man Utd, they just needed reinforcements.

We are not really lacking in squad depth. I would give you an example. One of the places we have been short in the last few games in the RW. Now, I'll give you a list of the players who can play there: Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Rosicky, Welbeck, Wilshere, and finally Campbell and Iwobi.

You cannot have seven players for one spot, can you? I'd say the only place we needed a backup is DM, and we have been doing fine so far at that spot.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

DM and striker are the problems, and were the problems in pre-season. Walcott adapting to striker has been a huge help, but he is incredibly injury prone. An injury to Giroud, and what do Arsenal do there?

DM is the worst one. A serious Coquelin injury would completely destroy Arsenal's season, Flamini and Arteta cannot play at this level any more.

I know, I agree with you on that. But seen a lot of suggestions everywhere about how Wenger should have a right midfielder with the quality of Ozil and Sanchez. We do - his name is Aaron Ramsey. I'm sure people say the second Bayern game and realised how important he is to the team.

Ahh I haven't seen those comments, but agreed that you can't just pick up players like Ozil and Sanchez whenever you want. Schneiderlin was the huge oversight, I still don't know what Wenger was thinking there.

It's a business model. They buy them for relatively cheap and keep only the couple they like and sell the rest for a big profit.

It's a business model that should be criminalized, though.

I don't think he would have ever been given an opportunity in Mourinho's team, he clearly didn't rate him, it was best for both parties to leave.

It was best for him to leave. As for Chelsea, Roman needs to pander to Mou less. As great as Fergie was, managing a club shouldn't be an autocracy. If Mou can't manage a young player wanting game time like KdB or Lukaku that says more about his man management skills (or lack thereof) than anything else.

No, Costa's ability is way more than Lukaku, I won't let my hate for the player get better of my reasoning.

The only thing is he has not taken the media marginalisation well, unlike Suarez, who took it up as a challenge.

he might be better now (although that's debatable since Costa has had very few prolific seasons in a longish career). But Lukaku will likely become a better player if he's not so already. For one thing Lukaku always has had a good goalscoring record.

        • 12 Years

kids only 22, jheeze keep him in the system, maybe loan him out, but give him a chance. He's gonna be a force in the league if he's not already.

        Most PL goals age 22:

        Michael Owen 83
        Wayne Rooney 68
        Cristiano Ronaldo 66
        Robbie Fowler 65
        Andrew Cole 55
        Robbie Keane 52
        Emile Heskey 50
        Romelu Lukaku 49

and Lukaku still has 6 months to overtake the three, maybe even 5 above him.

Got his starting berth very young. Never more than 16 in a season and that was age 20:

            Emile Heskey
            Age 18, 10 goals
            Age 19, 20 goals
            Age 20, 26 goals
            Age 21, 36 goals
            Age 22, 50 goals
            Age 23, 59 goals
            Age 24, 65 goals
            Age 25, 72 goals
            Age 26, 82 goals
            Age 27, 86 goals
            Age 28, 94 goals
            Age 29, 98 goals
            Age 30, 103 goals
            Age 31, 106 goals
            Age 32, 109 goals

Fair enough, but my point is that, for the type of player he is, he shouldn't be anywhere near his peak at 22. Ridiculous to say "he isn't good enough for Chelsea". First off, Chelsea are currently near the relegation zone, so he's a damn sight better than they are at the moment, and secondly, he's 22!

It's not as if it wasn't obvious that those (all three) are incredibly talented players. And I would rather question the attitude of their respective managers in these cases. All of these players have shown exactly the right attitude, despite what has been told by the club that wouldn't give them a chance.

you could say that in a few weeks vardy has tough run of games and if your need is to catch up then having someone different is a way. problem with that though , his likely replacement ighalo also has hard run at same time.

depends if it going to be heavily stats based.

            • 12 Years

Previous seasons goalscoring rates aren't really relevant.

The style of play of a team can change dramatically season to season as players come and go, especially after a managerial change. If Vardy is now getting significantly more chances to score goals each game than he did previously then why would you expect his goalscoring record to stay the same?!

            1. pompeyfan
              • 16 Years
              10 years, 5 months ago

yeah there are infinite variables in football. But the fact is that recently Vardy had an average record at Championship level so there's no guarantee that he will become a consistent top PL striker.

Personally I don't think he will become this.

There are no guarantees of anything of course but he doesn't need to be a top PL striker with the way Leicester are playing!

Their incredibly attacking philosophy means he gets so many more shots, shots on target and big chances that he can get away with being half as good as Ighalo, Gomis Diouf and Pelle and still match their returns.

        • 12 Years

It took me 30 weeks to get Yaya in 2013/14 and 28 weeks to get Austin 2014/15 and they were only because they had DGWs. Lessons need to be learnt.

this is fine assuming he ends up scoring 25+ goals in the league because Leicester continue their form and stay around the top 6. But there is no guarantee that this will happen.

There are plenty of examples of players starting brilliantly and then tailing off

Looking forward over Xmas, which option do you prefer?

    a) Ozil & Ighalo
    b) Mahrez & Vardy

Looking at a front 3 of Aguero, Kane, Vardy/Ighalo. The latter facilitates Ozil, the former only sub 7s - Mahrez still seems the best option though I think his scoring will regress. Bolasie/Wijnaldum are other options (I have Barkley already and am thinking of shipping)

"Hazard would have to confirm whether or not he asked referee Michael Oliver for treatment before Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn raced on to the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

Television footage of the incident appeared to show Hazard asking for medical attention, but the Chelsea winger is the only person who can confirm that this conversation took place."

Sure the referee could confirm this as well.

Chelsea will have to come back to their old form sometime now. If it's not with the current fixtures it will never be. So, is it foolish or common sense to buy one of Costa, Hazard, Pedro, Willian or Oscar right now. Perfect differentials.

How far along in the season do you actually stop bothering about team value?

Also, which approach has served you better in the past, making transfers early to make money or making them as late a possible to be safe.

Monitoring Team value all season, will help me bring in Kun and field a strong strikeforce and midfield without depleting my defence

i've made transfers as late as possible losing value because I don't want to risk buying a player that will then get injured before I get to play him. I've been able to do that, because of the profit I've made on others. Gomis for example, I sold pretty quickly when I thought his form had dipped, making profit on him. Others held on to him, and suffered as a consequence

Late season WC for me to completely stop. But as the season goes on it slips further and further back in my mind.

Assuming fpl have priced players correctly and the optimal team costs more than £100m, 0.1m = ~0.06 points per gameweek.

Take a -4 hit to transfer out Payet? Probably I should because it's capital demolition to keep him?

If so, who should I transfer in?

    A) Mahrez
    B) Coutinho
    C) Lanzini
    D) Albrighton

C or D are Aguero enablers. They'd give me the money to upgrade Lukaku to Aguero in the next gameweek. I'd play 3-4-3 with one of them on the bench.

    Thoughts on this -4

Payet, Mitrovic, Kolarov out. Ozil, Kane, Hutton in.

    Leaves me with:

    Myhill
    Smalling Clyne Bertrand
    Ozil Sanchez KDB Mahrez
    Lukaku Pelle Kane

    (McCarthy, Hutton, Huth, Westwood)

Need to sort goalkeepers at some point soon but want Kane and not sure I like the downgrade options with Payet.
