Having assessed the stand-out Defenders over the last four Gameweeks yesterday evening, we now turn our attentions to the centre of the park. Arsenal, Tottenham and Bournemouth’s playmakers feature in our analysis, whilst we also take a look at some in-form protagonists from Everton, Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle as the search for a Dimitri Payet replacement intensifies.

False widows get such bad press. I'd leave it there - it'll catch some flies.

It's only the noble false widow that's been implicated in one or two bites, and has been sensationalised by the media. There aren't any deadly spiders in the UK.

To be honest, Reedy is right. Massive sensationalist reporting about their "danger" (most bites are no different to say a bee sting at most) and their numbers (if you believe the Irish media our sunlight has been blocked out by mountains of false widows).

    At the age of 23:

    Ronaldo: 118 goals (1 Ballon d'Or)
    Messi: 150 goals (2 Ballon d'Or)
    Neymar: 183 goals (zero)

... Will it be Neymar's year?

Fifth midfielder option to monitor: Josh King for AFCB. After a shaky start to the season he's had a good game and a half where we matched S**thampton and battered Newcastle. It will take a few games to see whether he's now first choice, but he's playing up front so a possible OoP option. At 4.6m he's not the cheapest or most nailed-on (yet) fifth mid out there, but as an AFCB fan I'd say he's worth thinking about. (You can apply most of the same comments to Stanislas as well).

I'm looking at Stanislas. I'm hoping he gets some decent game-time over the next few months, as AFCB look for a way to start scoring more. He's quick and can (occasionally) finish (from what i remember). Has always needed a lot of chances, which isnt ideal in the prem...but with Wilson and Gradel both out - i'm hoping Howe decides to trust him/give him a run...

      You reckon that's likely?

      1. Worzel Gummidge
        10 years, 8 months ago

Stan is only playing as Pugh is injured. he won't nail down a spot. Probably dropped next game or next game when Pugh is back.

He's been very inconsistent, but has shown great glimpses. I think Eddie Howe feels the need for pace, and Stanislas and King are the ones who can give the side that. The full back / midfielder partnerships down the wings have been a real feature of out play, but at the moment if someone is performing then they can force their way into the side. We've not got the luxury of loads of players bang on form.

from the DZ archives on Sanchez..

I can understand Arsene giving him a rest soon, but it makes no sense whatsoever for it to come next weekend vs WBA.

City missed an opportunity to go 2 clear with their squandered sitters vs Villa when Arsenal ended up drawing in the derby. I can't imagine Arsene will squander that same chance next weekend when City have an arguably similar task in Liverpool, especially since City play AFTER Arsenal and Arsene won't know before kick-off what result is enough to keep in stride.

and now with Walcott facing a longer lay-off, I feel the 'impending Sanchez rest' is further down the road than it was earlier, even if Ox and Ramsey are close to returning.

Playing the worst defense in the league, on pens while his streak is live and will have the whole squad behind him trying to create for him.

Just not sure i'll ever fully be able to trust him..and that's an issue as i'll constantly be looking for an excuse to get him out. For that price, i think you need someone you're happy to fire and forget for a little bit. Ride the odd 2 pointer, then hopefully reap a decent points average. Given how often Cout's stats havent turned into points....i'm not sure i'm there yet with him.

But...at 8m, new manager and clearly a quality player...it's not the worst idea

That's my problem with him. He'd need to go on quite some run before i'm convinced. Similar to the Ramsey situation a couple of seasons back!

I think Rambo is a slightly different proposition myself. Always gets in ridiculously good positions....so his 'shots'/'touches in box' etc always seem more effective.

The problem with just looking at Coutinho's stats is that they don't tell you about his positioning vs. defenders. Rambo just always seems to be in the right place.

          I'm rambling.

Never be afraid to ramble! You're right, that's why the position maps in the member's area are so good (when they load). If you order by shots on target you can see exactly where he takes the shots from. It doesn't show where the defenders were or how much pressure he was under but it still adds lots of valuable info.

all i'm thinking is that if Liverpool get a fit striker playing regularly might help his numbers.
Also if he plays in the hole they tended to do well in Klopp's system when he was at Dortmund.

So 4 injured, 2 others on suspension tightrope, 2 further others on international duty a long way away and probably tired.

At this rate I'll just play Mahrez and Butland - though in fairness they have carried the team all season.

I'm in a similar situation and I agree with the points above - yet the only reason I haven't sold Ayew yet is the kind fixture run, so surely I have to play him vs. Bournemouth?

Bournemouth's last erm, 135 mins have been very good from a general footballing perspective, all that's missing is a goalscorer and a decent keeper. They are better than you might assume and Swans are struggling. Looks a home banker but I wouldn't be at all shocked if Cherries nicked it.
